Gary Yamamoto hard baits? 2025

One of the local stores just started carrying the gycb hard baits, I was wondering if anyone has used them at all, specifically the jerk baits and square bills

i have a couple of the jerkbaits, I have yet to use them but from the reviews i read they seem to slowly sink tail down, because of this people are saying they are bad. From some of my research i seem to remember something about when bait fish die they normally slowly sink down and backwards, to me if you want a more natural presentation then a bait that does that would make sense.

if anyone knows otherwise please let me know if i'm wrong so i don't give people the wrong idea

i tried a medium diving crank in shad pattern and could not seem to get bit on it no matter how hard i tried. they were biting other similar styles at the time too.... i gave up on it.

i also bought one of the top water poppers, hands down WORST one I've ever used. either that or they mis-labeled it and meant to say "slow sinking - sub surface - doesn't really pop popper"

great soft baits though!!

I have the GY Popper, works great for me, also use the grubs soft baits for trailers. Was wanting to try a GY crank, just haven't got one yet. But I would like to see what everyone else says on it.

mine performed so terribly bad i have to believe it was a defect.

i also use the GY grubs and they're great, just a little pricey, but i did get them on a great sale. the UV glow in the dark ones really caught my eye!

I have one of their spook-style walking topwaters, and I like it very much. Seems like a well made bait and I've caught fish with it.

I noticed the same at my local Dick's Sports stores. I was looking at some of the jerkbaits and lipless cranks, but wanted to get some feedback. Thanks for starting this thread!

I have a few of the square bills and the tate pencil. The first time I used one I hooked a bass. After that I never got a bite on any of them. Over the course of last season I kind of lost confidence in hard baits, yamamoto and other as well, so I may not have been fishing them as effectively as I otherwise would have.

Sounds like they are definitely hit or miss. Maybe I will pick up one or two to try. Worst case scenario I have some cool looking display pieces.

I never bought into "rules" for any type of lure and with the case of jerkbaits as to tail down, nose up, slow fall, slow rise, fast fall or rise...I think and read that they all have their day in the sun. I personally like a more horizontal - 2:30/8:30 position - suspended and based on water temps and, to some degree, outside air temps, a slow rise would be my ideal jerkbait for winter bassn.

I personally don't really like any of gary yamamoto hard baits with the exception of the popper. But then I bought another popper that was the same size and color and it didn't work right so save your money and get SK or Spro or LC or Megabass baits.

Ime their hardbaits are no good. I've tried the cranks and top waters with no luck at all. I did end up burying a treble in my thumb though. The midasu lipless cranks look good but now I'm too afraid to buy one. I just bought one of the newer spinnerbaits but probably just because it looked cool. They can't keep them in stock at my local DSG so maybe that's a good sign....

This is one of my favorite fishing videos on youtube. It has Gary Yamamoto talking about his new hardbaits and if you listen between the lines (which is not hard to do), you can tell he's basically saying he hardly ever uses hardbaits and doesn't have any plans on it because his soft baits are so superior (I agree) but is doing this only for the money. I like the honesty or unintentional honesty of Gary. They throw in the other guy to pump up the hardbait.

I have several. I think that on sale at Dick's and my Local shop they are a great bargain. The Squarebills, Jerkbait, and walker have all successfully produced for me. Good hooks to

Like there plastics, there hard baits are pricey and I'll stick with strike king or rapala. Had the crank and don't like the wobble and got a popper from them it was OK just not the action I like.

dicks had them onsale today...I bought one for like $5. Worth a shot. Gotta be better than the arashi.

I bought one of their poppers on sale last year, I've done OK with it. I like Pop X, Zell Pop, and a few other more. I did buy a all white spinnerbait this summer and have done well on it.

I've got one of the jerkbaits and I've only tired it once. I might try it again, but I didn't care for the action of it when I did.

They are advertised as "suspending" they do not but instead sink really fast and the action on them are HORRIBLE wish I had not bought 6 when they came out (all 6 sink at the same rate and have the same horrible action so I am 100% I didn't buy a dud) stay away from these

That is awesome! It was so clear in the video he didn’t have too much confidence in his own baits so they had to throw in the other guy which makes it even funnier.????

I’ve got a couple crankbaits. They’re ok, but they don’t seem to have much action to them. I guess that type of bait has its place.

The topwater walking bait I bought got chucked. It sank ????.

I saw those other day when contemplating what to do with my DSG gift card. They looked all right, but when I read the depth readings... decided it wouldn't work for me. Just not deep diving enough for my waters. Seems like they may be effective for really shallow areas, but... I like 'em to go a little deeper than 12" or whatever it said on the package... I've gotten too fond of Lucky Craft cranks. I don't really buy anything else anymore cause those work so darned good.
