How Do You Store Your Jerkbaits? 2025

fishing user avatarTotalNoob reply :

So I was watching a youtube vid the other day and noticed a guy had his jerkbaits stored in the neatest looking box I've ever seen for jerkbaits, I knew immediately I had to find some. After some digging, it turns out the box is a discontinued Shimano storage box available only on ebay for exorbitant prices, new or used. Pics below of the box I'm talking about.

I don't know if anyone here is like me but most of my jerkbaits are long slender profile, often having three trebles vs two. That 3rd treble can create some true headaches if you go stuffing multiple jerkbaits into compartments.

So this discontinued Shimano box style seems to be a no-brainer style, and clearly people are willing to pay ridiculous prices for the level of organization and convenience they bring to these kinds of lures. Looking at the d**n thing I'm half-tempted to throw my hat in the ring to spend $40+ bucks for one! ... but then I know I'd need to have several and then the idea becomes absurd.

So, is there truly no manufacturer on the market currently with a common sense style box like this?

Follow up questions would be, how are you guys storing your jerkbaits .. especially the 3-treble jerks? Do you use hook bonnets to help prevent nightmare tangles? Have you found a particular box you like exclusively for jerkbaits?

I throw all my hardbaits in regular plano trays and simply tie the trebles together with the twist ties you get when you buy the plastic sandwhich bags.....Easy to remove, keeps hooks from tangling, you can fit plenty of jerkbaits of all sizes in one row of a standard size box if you simply lay them flat. I may get some slight scratching, but that doesn't bother me. If you throw any lure and catch fish, or simply hit some objects in or out of water....Your lure will show alot more wear....Besides, the best lures in any box are the ones that barely have any paint left. I almost never throw the new ones unless I lose a confidence bait. My favorite harbaits are beat up pretty bad.

No matter how well I organize or store my baits after a few hours of fishing it looks like a disaster with hooks tangled on each other.

fishing user avatarMN Fisher reply :

Jerkbaits and Crankbaits get treated the same. Owner Treble Hook Safety Caps. No more tangled trebles.

I throw them all together so that when I need one, they're hopelessly tangled up and my buddy catches a couple fish before I can get one tied on.

Exactly the same for me. A style box like this old shimano would seem to aid with that annoying problem, if not prevent it outright.

This is basically my current system, especially for the long 3 trebled jerks. This molded tray seems like a substantial step up from a time perspective.

It's not much of a time thing. I put the caps on before taking the lure off, then take the caps off after tying it on. Also prevents me sticking myself with the hooks while removing/adding a lure to the rig.

fishing user avatarJ._Bricker reply :

@TotalNoob, I kinda ran across the same situation. A friend gave me a container than he kept his tuna jigs and it works great providing a stable for my thoroughbreds. I have purchased these, which are double sided, on eBay and Amazon. I preferred this option to the Plano 3700 which I store all my other hard baits in.

Bass Mafia makes great boxes and they have one for jerkbaits that seems really great. They are kinda expensive tho, but it will hold a lot of jerkbaits, especially if you put 2 in each compartment. I hope the link works.

Hope this helps

fishing user avatarFishes in trees reply :

Plano makes 3600 & 3700 size crank bait boxes that will hold jerk baits.  They are cheaper than the Shimano boxes.  Be mindful that those Shimano boxes won't fit all jerk baits.  Purchase one ( while you're at the store, size it up to your brand of jerk baits to make sure they fit. ). I generally put one bait per slot.   Fill it up.  Repeat (buy another and fill it up )  If the box you get has large enough compartments to put 2 baits in, use plastic hook bonnets to ease the tangling issues.

I looked at the Bass Mafia jerk bait coffin, but I didn't like how it would fit in my boat bin.  The 3700 & 3600 sizes are much more predictable.

fishing user avatarOnthePotomac reply :

All of mine (to many) go into  one plano 3700 with hook caps and organized by color.

This works fairly well:

Fits the same into 3600/3700 tackle bags.

fishing user avatarI/MBasser reply :

I use a regular Plano box and tie up the trebles with small rubber bands.  You can get something like 500 for a few bucks at any craft store or Hobby Lobby.  Never have an issue with trebles getting tangled.

In a Plano box, making sure at least one hook point in each goes through the eye tie of another...

I go with the rubber band method ~

Chunk them in the 3700 and hope for the best. I have got really good at shaking them to get them untangled.

I use a Falcon Jerkbait box.  I wish they still made them.  It can fit deep diving baits or 2 regular jerkbaits in one slot without them getting tangled up.

Looks like AJ's summertime jerks...his fall fishing jerks are in the boat.  ????

fishing user avatarBoomstick reply :

I have mine in a Bass Mafia 3700 box, 2 or three in each section. The hooks get tangled and it's annoying, but it works other than that.

fishing user avatarColumbia Craw reply :

Diawa is releasing a jerkbait box with same features you are looking for and TW will have them in early January.

A-Jay, YOU are such a JERK...bait aficionado.  Can I borrow that fire tiger model, 7th down on the far left row?

Thanks (I think)

But I caught the bug a few years back from BR member @Dwight Hottle -

His knowledge on these baits, as well as his collection, is vast.

I recently switched to the Plano 3701 for all my jerkbaits, thin version of the 3700.

Like it much better, less bouncing around so my megabass baits don't get beat up as much.. ????

Same here. Haven't had but a few over the years I couldn't shake/rattle loose

fishing user avatarSam reply :

I store my jerkbaits in a tackle box specifically designed for jerkbaits.

Look them up in the BPS catalog or on an Internet retailer or from Delaware Tackle.
