Hello all,
in your opinion, what is the best hard swimbait for < $40? Does it have good action? realistic paint job?
Hmmm, this might sound goofy, but the BBZ 6" trout hardbaits are a good deal at under 25.00. At the moment, I can't think of any good hardbaits I'd want in the 40.00 range..most are more than that, i.e. CL8's ect.

This is the only "big" swimbait I've used but I LOVE it. I have the 3 piece model though.
I think I'm spoiled by Mattlures. His detail blows that away in my opinion. I know they work (Dan crushes them with it) but I just don't think they look good.

They're lathed dowels with hooks hanging from them...they look like crap compared to some other swimbaits but I'll be damned if they don't catch fish.

I have both, but I prefer the original single jointed model. The 9" Dark Trout is one of my all time favorite baits.

Matts baits are awesome, but I think even he would agree with me on how effective the Slammer is.

What color do you use Dan?
Dark Rainbow.
The BBZ-1 6" swimbait was highlighted on one of the fishing shows last week. Lots of underwater coverage of it's action. It really impressed me. And they were catching decent sized smallies on it!
Being not as heavy as some (I think it was about 2 oz.), they were casting it on regular baitcasting rigs. I'm going to pick one up. Only $20.00 too.
The BBZ 6 inch is hard to beat for the $20.00 price tag. They do catch fish and while there are better baits out there, expect to pay considerably more.
I like the Trout and Shad in slow sink.

The only reason I ended up with the X2 is because TW didn't have any of the single jointed baits in the colors I wanted at the time. I'll try the single jointed bait eventually...probably one of the giant ones

which ones do you like more?
I like both the Trout and Shad depending on what the bass are keying on at the time. The reason I like the slow sink is because you can wake them as well as fish them deep. In my opinion, the best of both worlds and like I said, its hard to beat the price.
By the way, I agree with you that the Matt Lures are great. The Hard Bass is difficult to beat when they are keying on bass, shhhh, thats a secret.
I meant which baits do you prefer more than the bbz?

x2
By the end of the summer I think I'm probably going to have a bunch of different colors and sizes. Also you can get used Matts hard gill for around 40 shipped those are pretty awesome too.
Where I fish, we have trout that are stocked by the DFG, so it makes sense to me to use the rainbow trout slowsink, as I agree with Mike that the slowsink is pretty versetile, you can pretty much fish it at any depth.
Wouldn't this be another thread..? as not to go OT from OP question..
QuoteI meant which baits do you prefer more than the bbz?
We don't even have trout where I fish them and the bass still love the trout patterns.
I do have a Slammer. I dont use it much because I use my own baits but.......Biz is right. The Slammer is a classic and proven. I recomend it just from everybody who swears by them.
QuoteI meant which baits do you prefer more than the bbz?
The original post asked for $40.00 and under Hard Baits. For the over $40.00 hard lures, when they are keying on bass, like I stated, I like the Matt Lures Hard Bass. When they are keying on trout I like the 3:16 Free Style and Real Deal but they are very expensive. For soft trout swim baits its hard to beat the Hudds but the Matt Lures are also an excellent choice.
The only two I use much are Mattlures Woody and a sebile in the smaller sizes. All the rest of mine are fifty dollars plus.
Thanks for the info. I shall try the Spro BBZ-1 Swimbait 6". What kind of line would you throw this on?
you want the best fish catchin' swimbait for under $40.00 , get your self a 6" lunker punker !!! i can't belive no one has mentioned them :
lunker punker isn't a swimbait. its not even jointed! its just a big bait.
Quotelunker punker isn't a swimbait. its not even jointed! its just a big bait.
i guess a 6'' and 8'' huddleston deluxe isn't a swimbait either :
To me a swimbait doesn't have to have action imparted on it with the rod to give it a swimming motion. If you consider a Lunker Punker a swimbait, I guess you would have to consider a Zara Spook a swimbait too. I don't think being big and thrown on a swimbait rod makes it a swimbait IMO.

beat me to it lol. you can get the blemished on TW for around $24. one of the best topwaters "wake/swimbait" on the market. love seein bass explode on these puppies, n pike are even more explosive ;D
there is nothing wrong with a punker. Good bait. It is a walk the dog bait but not a swimbait just like the huddle bug is not a swimbait.
Noooooooo...a Huddelbug isn't a swimbait..? wah..lol

QuoteWhat kind of line would you throw a BBZ-1 on?
Floater - 20lb CXX
Sinker - 20lb CXX or 100% Trilene Fluoro
Okay, I know the price was 40.00, but, for 20.00 more, you could get a Nate's 6" swimbait...well worth the extra 20.00 imho. Just a thought.
Almost forgot..they are now at TW..

be careful with 20 lb. CXX , i have cast off 3 8" hudds , 2 bbz-1 8" slowsinks and 1 fast sink with that line due to kinks in the line , CXX is so brittle in the higher lb. lines that if you get a kink in it , it WILL break !!! may i suggest better line , try Izorline XXX in 25 lb. line for baits weighing 4 or more oz. since going to this line (the XXX) i have not cast off a bait . for baits that weigh more than 7 oz. , i go up to 30 lb. , for baits over 10 oz. , go up to 40 lb. ....
brittle? hardly the word i would choose to describe cxx.
you shouldnt be fishing with kinked line of any lb test though.
i refuse to throw my wake jr on anything heavier than 20
Quotebrittle? hardly the word i would choose to describe cxx.you shouldnt be fishing with kinked line of any lb test though.

i think you know what i mean !! CXX is a very dense line in test beyond 15 lb. , it is kinda like floruocarbon in it's feel . as for using 20 lb. CXX for swimbaits that weigh only 3 oz. (wake jr.) you could use 15 lb. line . i throw my Tylures 8" kicker trouts (wake/floater is 3 oz. and my slow sink is 3.5 oz.) on 12 lb. CXX ...
Learn to use your thumb and not cast beyond your ability.
It's easy to blame equipment, "equipment no hit back." ;D
CXX is not brittle. and im sure that the chemical makeup of the line doesnt change above 15lb.
Best Swimbait-$40 budget??
I just picked up one of the H20 Xpress Sunfish 6 packs today for $24.99 on sale at Academy. Look pretty good to me and in two different sizes.
