To buff or not to buff 2024

fishing user avatarriverbasser reply :

Got my head burnt pretty good yesterday through the mesh in my hat and I thought about getting a buff. Just curious how many of yall use em and how you like it?

fishing user avatarSenko lover reply :

I like getting buff

fishing user avatarOCdockskipper reply :

I started using one a year ago, but I am still self conscious that I look like a hoodlum with it on.  When I pass by other folks, I'll pull down the mouth area so I can speak with them & they can see me smile.

fishing user avatarRAMBLER reply :

Use one all the time.  Keep spares on ice and switch out when the sun is hot.  I wear a ventilated broad brim hat over it or baseball hat under it.  I don't need more cancers cut off of me.

fishing user avatarGundog reply :

Its all about the protection. I don't have buffs but I'm planning on getting a set for the arms and head. Great thing is, I've heard from people who use them that they keep the flies from biting too. Its got to be worth the money.

fishing user avatarbeardown34 reply :

Mosquitoes can and will bite through them

I fish subdivision ponds at dawn and dusk and this is what I look like even when it's 80 degrees out. Freaking mosquitoes.

I use one all the time down here and have a spare in my bag just in case...

fishing user avatarBassinLou reply :

I don't get on my boat without one. Besides the sun protection, buffs protect from bugs and mosquitoes too.

Must be tough when you gotta pee!

fishing user avatarBassnChris reply :

I've tried wearing them......I can't do it.

i hate things that cling.

fishing user avatarMosster47 reply :

I completely cover myself. Compression bottoms, long sleeve shirt, sun gloves, buff, sun hat, and sun glasses.

I still feel sun faded and worn out when I get off the water, but the next day I don't feel destroyed like I used.

fishing user avatarNeil McCauley reply :

Used one for a while but ended up not liking it. They're just not comfortable enough for 10+ hours of fishing. Too hot, hard to breathe, fogs up sunglasses. I actually bought N95 masks and hot glued one inside the front and cut holes in it so my breath had a place to go, prevents sunglass fogging really well, but overall it's still just more hassle than its worth. And if you wear one, you're kind of committed to it. Taking a break from it and putting on sunblock will get it all greasy and nasty when you wear it again. A compromise might be wear the buff for the first half the day and sunblock the other half. I'd do that if it was a late June super clear day and I was going to be on the water sun up til sun down for 16 hours. Otherwise, I'd rather deal with sunblock all day than the buff.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I think they look silly, but I wear one all the time. There's no way to get sunblock in very fold and crease of your ears, neck, face every time you go fishing. Plus if you have short or no hair like me, that scalp sunburn is a mother and putting sunblock in your hair just sucks. I go with the buff, sun gloves, sun shirt then sunblock my legs and feet. Also, with being a contact wearer, sunblock in my eyes equals blurry vision the rest of the day, no bueno.

fishing user avatarOregon Native reply :

Can't stand something over the face....worked in a clean room years ago and it was the same thing.  Just not for me but is what it is.  Will wear the silly looking "Tilly hat" but other than that and drinking tons of non sugared drinks I enjoy fishing in the sun.  Still have lots of energy after long day.

what is the reasoning behind the buff going OVER the hat? does it stay up better that way? i tend to wear the buff under my hat.

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

I currently don't wear one, but I'm planning on trying it out soon.

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

I smoke a cigar 90% of the time that I'm fishing, so a buff doesn't work for me.  But I LOVE my Columbia PFG hoodies:

Honestly, I don't find wearing the hood up (9AM to 5PM most every day) any hotter than having it down.  I still need to use sunscreen on my face, ears, hands, etc..(and ankles), but I'm a fan of the summer hoodie and on the lookout for other kinds to compare.

fishing user avatarJd_Phillips_Fishin reply :

I never leave the dock without it.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

I would suffocate in one  . I just use liberal amounts of SPF50 sunscreen . I get the stuff made for babies that dont burn eyes .

fishing user avatarSwamp Rat reply :

I wear one all the time, under either a wide brimmed floppy hat, or full outlaw and under a wide brimmed cowboy hat. When in the kayak I wear the long zip off shorts/pants full length tucked into a pair of flats booties, long sleeve shirt, gloves, and the buff/hat combo. You would be surprised how much better you will feel...tomorrow.

Keeps my hat on better.  Don't have to take it off on boat runs!  And it does stay up, but I don't know about better because I have never worn it under the hat!

Buff, long sleeves, long pants and sun gloves for me!

fishing user avatarFisher-O-men reply :

I guarantee, nobody wants to see me fish in the buff!!!

fishing user avatarBiteFiend reply :

I got a scalp sunburn one time with a mesh baseball cap. The next day I went and got a buff. I wear it under my cap so it covers the top of my head and I pull it up so it covers my face. No more scalp sunburns. This set up compared to a non-mesh baseball cap is much cooler temp wise. Looks kind of silly but gets the job done. Just don't walk into a gas station with your buff pulled up.

Ah, I see. It's gotta be that 00 -- keeping the hat from flying off during boat runs. No wonder I never understood. My hat has no problem staying on when I run from one end of the pond to the other

Broke down and bought my first one the beginning of this year and I now own five of them. I can't believe I waited soooo long..

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I started wearing one this year when I'm out on the water.  I also wear it while working out in the yard and cutting the grass.

I have the Cabelas version of this and cant recomend it enough.  With a tank top on underneath it is almost as cool as a tshirt and I have found that if i wear a ball cap the hood stretches out far enough that I don't even get sun on my face.

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

I own three and never ever fish without them.   Don't mess with UV rays!  They also keep the bugs and mosquitos away.   Original Buff did recently introduce an XL size buff if the original ones feel too constricting.

fishing user avatarRick Howard reply :

They look kinda warm.  Are they?  Are they uncomfortable fitting?

fishing user avatarDschouest42 reply :

I wore a buff for about a year, but, I had problems with it fogging up every pair of sunglasses I wear. Instead I just wear my hat and deal with sunburn. I know, skin cancerarrow-10x10.png and all that, but, sun burn doesn't really bother me: I got dark Cajun skin that takes the sun like a champ.

They're just polyester so I wouldn't call them warm, but they do take some of the wind chill away and when you pull them up over your ears they prevent your ears from getting numb.  Polyester is the perfect material for these things - they do enough to keep the chill out, but when it gets hot will wick moisture away and dry quickly so they will actually make you feel cool.  I have polyester shirts for the gym and fishing and they do a great job of wicking away sweat and not making you feel "hot" even if it's 90+ degrees outside.

Some buffs can be uncomfortable because of size/fitting, they're just an elastic tube so if you have a large head or large neck they can feel tight and constricting.  Check out the Original Buff XL size buffs for a looser fitting buff.

fishing user avatarScarborough817 reply :

i normally wear one just because i can throw it in the water if it's hot and have it soaked and cool me down a bit

Kinda like Star Trek and the Borg.. Resistance is futile... You will be assimilated.

I always have one on. It does help with the flies and hydrilla gnats. I hate those things around my nose or ears.

fishing user avatarDelcoSol reply :

Any brands that have holes for your nose? I hate how they fog my glasses up if pulled over my nose. I wear one every time out. Gloves and sleeves too if im not wearing long sleeves.
