Most Valuable Pole.
In honor of my favorite football player, Adrian Peterson... what is your favorite fishing rod?
This is the fishing rod that goes with you everytime you go fishing. The setup that elicits a visceral response just by looking at it...
I'll start: my Dobyns 804C. It is labeled as a "carolina rig rod", but it is awesome at launching soft-body swimbaits and frogs obscene distances. My tourney partner Jack, jokes with me about no bass being out of reach. If I see him bust, I can get the bait to him...and since it's a carolina rig rod it has a seriously stiff backbone. Can set the hook on a hollowbody, even at long distances.
It doesn't matter what kind of bite is going on at any given time...I will have the 804C with me and I will be using it for something (frogs, swimbaits, spinnerbaits)
LTBC70MF or Dobyns 745c. Those two rods can do just about everything, unless I'm out drop shotting smallies. Then, it's the AVS63MLXF.
Powell Endurance 723. I liked it so much, i have 2 of them. I use them for alot of things. Jigs, soft plastics, spinner baits, swim jigs, chatterbaits, flukes, hollow body swim baits.
sure i have others that get pretty technique specific, but at the end of the year, when its all said and done, i can honestly say that ive used these the most. (You can tell when its time to clean the cork)
"This is the fishing rod that goes with you everytime you go fishing."
I fish all 4 seasons here - including every day this winter (soft water all winter so far). I fish different stuff depending the season and whether I'm fishing from the bank or the boat. There is only one rod that I always have with me, ashore or afloat, regardless of season - a lipless crank rod. Nothing fancy - a St. Croix Premier 7' MF BC rod with the 5-Year Challenge PQ on it with 10 YZ-US line.
Except for the dead of winter, there is a 2nd rod that I nearly always have with me - a grub/senko rod. Loomis GLX BSR852 spinning rod with a Pflueger Supreme 025 with either 6lb YZ-US or 20lb braid.
I'll have to say that neither rig "elicits a visceral response just by looking at it..." - I'm not sure I have any tackle that does that... I do have some tackle I'm fond of, but not to a "visceral" degree. They're just tools....
I've only had it a couple months, but my NRX 804c is a stud! It's great for everything from jigs to chatterbaits to hollow bodies. It's also ba with a Fat Ika. I really love this stick!
Shimano Compre CPS-X59MB
Short, efficient, strong, sensitive, fun.
My favorite for smallies is a custom Otterod built on a st croix legend extreme blank SCV 5C72MHM. I use it for all treble baits. My favorite for single hook baits is a st croix legend extreme LXC74HF. I just ordered it today for 1oz jigs, texas rigs & big EZ's. I even shipped it to Robert's house to keep it on the down low.
Dobyns 702 and 766 flip champions
My Skeet Reese Honeycomb Football Jig/Big Worm. I love it.
Was previously a dobyns dx 703 with a curado 50e. Now it may be the shimano cumulus 6'10 MH with a core 50mg7
Where I'm fishing usually dictates which combos are coming with me, but what's really important is
ADRIAN PETERSON MVP... YEAHHHHH BOYYYYYYY
Piscicidal AP is my favorite player too. Vikings are my favorite team.
Phenix Recon paired with a Gen 3 SX high speed
Jig's...Allstar ASR
Soft Plastic...Fenwick Techna AV
Spinner / Chatter...Phenix MI
Mike
Phenix Recon 715 with a Daiwa Zillion HSLA spooled with 16lb Sunline Sniper. Soft swimbaits, jigs, bigger jerkbaits (pointer 128), spinnerbaits, 10" senkos, small wakebaits, T-rigs & flukes. I love this set up.
My 6'8 MH F Shimano Compre. It had a Curado50E on it, but now it has the Curado100B for my daily user.
I love to frog and punch so a Steez XBD for frogs and the 7'11 St. Croix Xtreme for punching. Though for everyday use would probably be a NRX 853.

X2 love my Recon 715. I have a Revo sx strapped on it spooled with 20lb Sunline. Primarily my jig rod, but it is a very versatile rod.
Hmmmm tough choices here but I am going to go with my sage XP 9' 7wt. It was my first premium fly rod that I earned by working and guiding at the local fly shop. Since it was a pro deal I even got to have my name on the blank.....love that rod and have caught a lot of smallies and largemouth on it for sure.
NRX 893c paired with a Curado 50e
Here's another for the Dobyns DX745. Sometimes I sleep with this rod at night <3
My Shimano Compre worm and jig rod.

Yeah man. I do love my Dobyns 804C...she's my MVP...I take her everywhere.
My Dobyns DX745 OTOH is the smokin hot mistress I often think about when I'm with the 804.
Custom St. Croix 5S69MLXF. Out of all of my DS rods, it's my favorite.
I'm gonna have to go all Dollar General on you guys, especially after all those fancy names. As of right now I'd say Abu Garcia Veritas 7'6" medium. It's a Maserati compared to a Shakespeare rod from Wal-Mart!
Rods don't have to be expensive to be the MVP. You just have to use them and like them. I have several veritas rods and I love em.
I carried my Smallmouth 6'10" M Fast with Curado 51E every time I went out last year after I got them. My Cumara 7'2" MH Fast is another rod that sees use every time as well. Usually has a Fuego on it.
Fenwick HMG/AV 7'6". My "flippin stick" Has brought in all my 5lb+ bass except my PB, and helped me win more than a few $.
Got a few more HMG's for other presentations. I think I'm the only Fenwick guy on the forum
I've got a couple Fenwick rods...I love em. +80% of the saltwater fish I have ever caught have come off my Fenwick spinning rod.
powell endurance 764 or my custom nfc they go any time i go out.
My rods of the day are selected by my target species and locations like beach, jettie, sea wall or boat. I prefer 7' when it's windy and 7'6 when it's not. I do fish for bass most afternoons (not in the summer) but I target a number of different fish in the mornings, this time of year I may use live bait a couple of times a week, don't have a favorite, just the tool for the job.
These go with me always
casting- phenix recon 714c, gen 3 revo s 12lb invisix
spinning- *** *** black 7'1" m, cardinal stx20 8lb invisix
Casting: St Croix Legend Tournament Bass 7' M power, fast action
Spinning: St Croix Mojo 6'8" M/XF
My 6'3 Fenwick medium small mouth rod, and dobyns champion 682 pretty much come on every trip...
spinning - 69mlxf legend xtreme
casting - dobyns dx744 or nrx854 is a toss up.
I'm not sure if it is my favorite, but I caught more fish on a Cumulus 7'1" MH/Core 51 combo last season than on any other. Don't get me wrong, I really love this stick, I just don't know if I have one clear-cut favorite at this point.
Casting: Dobyns DX745C
Spinning: Dobyns DX742SF
Do you remember the scene in Caddy Shack where Judge Schmaeles takes out " Billie" his putter? That's me and these two rods.

Man there's a lot of dobyns!!!
Since I got it my kistler magnesium 6'9" mh/f with a gold carbonlite and 16 lb sunline sniper.
Before that, my one that I always brought was a carbonlite rod with said reel. I know it is ny a hundred dollar rod but man I love it. Have caught a ton of fish on it in only a year and half including my three best.
I almost hate to admit this but my MVP would have to be my two-piece Gander Mountain IM-8 Guide Series spinning rod. Its a 6'6" medium fast action rod for only about 60 bucks but its the one I use the most out of about 10 rods. And I have some "better" more expensive rods including a m/f SC Avid (I like it, grip gets a bit uncomfortable for jerkbaits all day), m/xf SC Mojo (decent with senkos), 6'3" m/xf SC eyecon (my main jerkbait rod, thought the length and grip style would be good, pretty happy) mh/f Veritas (really dont like it much, reel screw is annoying, too stiff, not that sensitive), g.loomis IMX m/f (still getting used to it, dont like the grip set up but casts far and starting to really like it), fenwick HMX (never really felt right, stripper guide seems to be too small) mh/f quantum allilance (little sensitivity), two baitcasters that I almost never use, m/f quantum tour (can't feel a thing, just weight at the end of the line means I caught weeds or fish) and h/f sc mojo frog (terrible with frogs).
Since its a two peice its always in my car and gets used whenever I get a minute or two to cast a lure from shore. When I fish at night I basically only throw a single colorado bladed spinnerbait and this is the only rod I want to use because it just seems more sensitive than my others. Makes no sense but thats how it seems. Its also my favorite for throwing hard jerkbaits even though a two-piece can be annoying by coming apart I deal with it happily. I've tried to add a jerkbait rod since I dont like to take the time to switch from my braid spool for throwing the spinnerbait to my fluro spool for the jerkbait but I havent found one I like as much.
6'6" Shimano Compre mh/f with Curado E7. This rod does so many things well that I almost never go fishing without it. If I leave it behind it's because I'm going river fishing where I can just sling a bait out and bring it back with any rod and catch fish. It's too rocky there to lay the rod down and not get it tore up so I just take Ugly Stiks when I go there.
Abu Garcia Veritas 7' M micro guide, this thing goes with me every single time. It is so versatile I can't afford not to take it. I can throw cranks of all sizes, jigs up to 3/8oz, t-rigs, jerk baits, spinnerbaits. This rod is definitely not a one trick pony.
Thank you Spaulding.....I mean A-Jay
For me it would be my NRX DSR 822S. I always have this rod rigged up with a drop shot rig and ready to go, even when I am fishing lakes with a lot of weeds. I maybe buried with this thing.
The MVP don't need to be the most expensive or the best rod in your arsenal. But it's the one that makes things happen....the one you can rely on everytime out. Kind of like my guy Adrian Peterson.
OK...maybe not the best analogy since he #28 IS the best and most expensive player on my Vikings, but you get the point...
I can't narrow it to one. I just can't do it. I have two rods that go with me every where, every time. The first is a Shimano CUmara Reaction 7-11 MH Xfast. It will fish everything from deep cranks to swimjigs in a pinch. I use it for open water spinnerbaits and cranking more than anything, but have taken to flipping with it because of its power and forgiveness. Completely ridiculous notion, I know, but this rod will do it.
The second is my GLX 894. I replaced a NRX with the GLX and I like it better. IT's hard to describe until you've fished them both. It just feels better. With the weight reduction on the GLX, I'm seriously considering going away from the NRX and back to the reliability of the GLX... another post for another time.
My MVP would have to be either my St Croix Legend Extreme 7' MF or my G Loomis MBR 842C GLX. No matter where I go, at least one of them are with me, usually both.
I'm not sure I've seen any dominant trend - not even the classic 7' MH-F BC bass rod. I HAVE seen quite a few mentions of 7' M-F BC rods though, which, since I fish mostly all open water, is my favorite BC length, power, and action; very versatile for many other folks as well it seems...

Now, THAT'S interesting !
Toss up between a 6'10" MH Falcon Low Rider with a Gen 2 Revo S.... and a 6'6" ML Bionic Blade spinning rod (old cork handle model) with a new model 2500 shimano sedona. Both are extremely versatile and are both always with me.
I have an old Daiwa Procaster rod that is around 30 yo. It is my punching and weed fishing rod. It is sensitive, but very sturdy.
