Upgrading my frog rod (Dobyns) 2024

I have a Dobyns Fury 735c Mag Heavy/Fast I've been using as my frog rod love everything about it. Perfect frog rod for what I like except when the frog bite is on and that rod is in my hands all day I feel like I did a full day arm workout with Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime. It's just to heavy ti use all day long. I'm looking to stay with Dobyns but move up in the series in Hope's I can find a rod with identical power and action..... maybe a slightly softer tip, but with less weight. Those of you that have experience with Dobyns chime in. Most my rods are Dobyns either fury or Champion xp but I've only dealt with the fury for the frog rods. I was thinking these might be close:
Sierra series 735 Mag Heavy/ Ex Fast
Champion XP 736 Heavy/ Ex Fast
Champion XP 735 MH/ Ex Fast

I dont find my 735 to be heavy, and it balances very well. What reel do you have on yours? Although I dont have experience with the rods you have listed I did struggle 2 years ago with my frog set up being "heavy" and unbalanced. I have my 2 735 fury's paired up with tatula ct's and the other with a tatula sv.
Another option may be going to a 705.

The Fury 735 will have a "tad" softer tip, along with a "tad" more moderate action than the Champion 735.

Step down to a 7 footer. Much easier to work the frog and won't wear you out if you are chucking a frog all day.

I originally got the 735 cause it was the only Mag heavy in the line up. Still is.

I have had 3 different reels on that rod, tatula ct, curado, and chronarch.

So your saying the Champion 735 is stiffer then the Fury 735

So Gary actually emailed me back I asked him the same and he recommended the Sierra 735. Second choice would be the Champion 735 with the full handle not the split. It's crazy how blanks are so different that a fury series mag heavy is similar in power and action as the Champion line Medium Heavy. Cheese and crackers why cant we have a industry standard on what a medium, MH, Heavy, etc. Is

Because the blanks are different in fiber content, and they will differ.

champ 735. Lighter and has a hair more power. Savvy 735 is also and really awesome frog rod. Fury's are good rods, just heavy.

I'm a huge fan of any Champion model. The 735 full grip is the deal. Gary Dobyns fishes the 736 but he is a Sasquatch.

Fiber content has no bearing on the ability to standarize blank power and action, be they made of ridiculously high modulus, low void, minimal resin composite, al dente pasta, or anything in between. There is no standard because there is no financial incentive.

I had the same question, and pulled some numbers from another site, thought you might find this helpful:
Fury 735C - 6.55oz
Champ 735C - 5.07 oz (not sure if this is split grip or not)
Champ 736C cork-full - 5.9 oz
DX 745C - 5.30 oz

Soft body frogs and hollow body frogs in sparse cover
DC 735C doubles as a hell of a jig rod
Same baits In heavier cover
DC 736C
Both Rods are going to feel lighter instantly as the blank is lighter, and the Fuji guides are lighter than the seaguides on the Fury, and will balance better with the reels you mentioned.
I ran the 735C Fury for 2 years as a frog rod simply cause I didn’t throw frogs enough to justify spending the coin in the more expensive rod. I just recently splurged on the 735C and couldn’t be happier. The tip is much faster and IMO makes the rod more versatile to do other things with it that require some solid back bone!
Let me know now what you decide on!

OP: I only have one Dobyns rod and it isn't a frog rod so I can't give an opinion based on actual experience. What I have read is that Dobyns are a bit heavier than a lot of rods and this confirms that. However, many people say the balance is very good making them feel lighter than they actually are.
Does the rod have to be a Dobyns? The 7' HF Okuma Helios weighs less than 4 oz. (3.84 oz.) I really like my 7' MF.

I have both the Champion XP 735C & 736C with full handles. Both rod have the Shimano(Japanese Version) Bantam MGL reels on them & can fish with them all day. I use the 736 pretty much for hollow body frogs but the 735 for other applications too, ex: toads,swimbaits, buzz & spinnerbaits, Carolina rig for a few. These rods are awesome in fact so are the reels.

It doesnt have to be a Dobyns. But I really like my Dobyns rods. All but 2 of my rods are Dobyns. I just like how they feel and fish

I have the Sierra 735C that I use for frogging. I'm not sure how it compares to the Fury line, but it can get taxing after a long day of frogging. It's kind of the nature of the beast with how fishing a frog works. All that aside, the Champion line is going to be your lightest option in the line up (with the split grip).

Even if you don't buy one , look for reviews on Ish Monroe's new 7' 4" Daiwa Tatula Elite Frog Rod - that man knows very well what goes into the best frog rod action , length , weight - you name it and Ish knows it about frog fishing ! My new frog rod will be the Sierra 735c I picked up during the TW clearance sale ($119) ... So versatile for other applications as well - it's a no brainer . If I get tired there is always a $1.00 5 Hour Energy Drink !

Jigs , 1/2 oz.to 1 oz. spinner baits (i.e. slow rolling a big single Colorado blade thumper) , 5" or 6 " paddle tail swim baits on a 1/2 oz. - 1 oz. head , Super Fluke / Mag Super Fluke on a 1/2 oz. - 1 oz. Scrounger head , pitching a 6" Senko with a 1/2 oz. - 1oz. pegged weight and a 4/0 or 5/0 flipping hook , perhaps even a mega size sexy dawg top water walking bait ... These are the things that come to mind .

I’m curious as to what the hype for full grip vs split grip is on the 735? Is it just user preference or is there actually a subtle different in these models?

The full grip is probably needed to balance the rod.
