Last weekend I was digging around on the auction site and found what looked to be a TD-Z 103H in decent shape. The pictures were not super clear so was hard to tell just how nice it was I really like the TD-Z so I bid and won.
It came in yesterdays mail. It is beyond nice. It is just about perfect mint shape. It looked as if it had hardly been used if at all. The only marks that suggest it being used, and the only marks on the entire reel are a couple spots on the front corners of the reel seat. They are small and I didn't even notice them until I put my reading glasses on. The knobs show no darkening as the gray ones usually do from sun/use etc. The reel looks like it got mounted on a rod once and left in the dark corner of somebody's cabin. I was kind of shocked to see one like this knowing the finish of these reels are...well, they wear easy. The spool sticker is still there too.
I tore it down to bare frame and cleaned it up inside. I know I am the first to be inside this reel. New grease it needed, but it was not dirty at all inside, I mean nothing. I put in Carbontex drag kit as I do in all my Daiwa's and this one, like any TD-Z, sings like a bird.
My problem is this, and it is this I'd like your opinion on....would you use it or stash this gem and let your kids inherit it when you leave. I have 6 others, all ugly but still perfect 10 performers so I don't have to use it but it's a TD-Z, ya know? I'd just hate to put a mark in this one, probably not many of these left in this condition.
I understand you dilemma, but truthfully it's just a reel. If you leave it to your children, what would be the value in a reel that you purchased off of e-bay? I am sure that when the times comes for you to pass things along they would prefer things that you actually used and meant something to you. I know I would.
If you have others, just make it a shelf queen, or fish it gently.
I use what I buy, but do my best to keep them as nice as possible. I am particularly fond of my TD-Z 105H. Also have a couple of the Purple Alphas reels. One looks almost new. It brings me a lot of pleasure to use it. One reel I plan on using more often is an Alphas ito 103ai. The bare aluminum finish requires care, but why have it and not use it? I am not a collector. I say use it and enjoy it as you obviously like them as well as I do.

OMG! Bite your tongue! Just a reel? It's a daggum TD-Z! No, it's a freakin' gem of a TD-Z!
Yeah, you guys are right. I'm not into shelving reels and my kids can get their own stuff. This beautiful piece of Daiwa history will get used right along with the rest of 'em.
To me, the question is not even valid. Tools are tools. More expensive tools are still tools.
I don't think your wrong on either scenario!
Sounds like a great score..
Shelf!
Unless it's some super rare gem then it's getting fished. If it was a super rare gem then I wouldn't be able to afford it anyhow. Unless I stumbled across it at some yard sale or something. So I'd fish it and enjoy it.

Nice reels, and a great find! I am sure your children will enjoy (insert name here) old reel.

Not to be nosy but how much did you pay for it on ebay??

I paid $130 for it I think, or $132 maybe?. Most I've paid for a TD-Z so far.
It was made to fish with, so use it! Keep caring for it and it will be handed down with more meaning.

They are nice. I would still rather have an old TD-Z or Fuego than a new TWS Zillion.
I find that used reels have more sentiment. I would like to have my Dad's Corsair wish was rarely used though. Smooth as butter. It's heavy, but it may make a decent big bait reel. In terms of used, I would like to get my dads old Browning Midas 6. He loves that reel. I hope I can find parts for it, but I dought it. That, and his old ProCaster.. I kinda want to trick it out though. On 1/25/2015 at 8:07 AM, aavery2 said:Nice reels, and a great find! I am sure your children will enjoy (insert name here) old reel.

Is the old TD Advantage any good? I saw a couple of good deals for it.
Catch a big bass on it, then hand it down to your kids with a story to tell. Why would a kid want a reel that has just been sitting on a shelf?

Ahh...d**n right they are. Been my absolute favorite for years. Many different versions over the years, all bullet proof solid performers, but the HSTA is killer in my opinion. It will do it all except for light stuff. My entire collection is mostly TD-A's, some TD-Z's, a couple Fuego's and 1 Alphas Type F. Love them TD-A's!
I'm a huge fan of the tdz platform. It's amazing after all these years they are still some of the best performing and highly sought after reels. I love how many spool options are available that can transform your reel for any application you could ever want. I've got 2 103ml r+'s, tdz 103hl and finally got my td ito that I've been lusting for a year.
Spool options....I have used the 103H and 105H stockers and also tried the 1016, which I found to be incredibly versatile. At this point I like it (1016) better than the 103H/105H spools. Would like to try the 1012 or SV spools though. The most important change for me is to get the 90mm handle from the 100M on them! I don't like the stock 80mm handles!
I actually prefer 80mm except when I'm using heavy resistance baits. I like rolling quickly with a smaller turn radius.
Seeing as you have so many of them I really think you should trade me for one of my TDAs. Either that, or you can leave it to me in your will................I'm patient, My uncle Guido drives really slow.
Fish it like you stole it!

How do the TD-A's compare to modern baitcasters like the citica, curado, pq, etc.?

1016 huh? Nice to know. Picked up a spare 105H not long ago, and am in the process of trying to buy an HLC. Guess now I will be forced to look at the 1016.

There were many variants of the TD-A's over the years. The culmination was the HSTA. Opinions will vary but mine is that this reel is one of those timeless designs that ANY angler can pick up and do well with. Slightly bigger and heavier (8.5 oz) than the trends of today (smaller & lighter) it will do it all except fish lighter lures well. I have thrown 1/4 oz jigs with mine at times but that is getting just outside it's abilities. Go over to Tackle Tour and find the review of the HSTA, it's good reading.
Have you ever fished a Daiwa with their MagForce-Z braking system?

There is some difference in braking profile going on with this spool that I just loved. I think that's what was. Whatever, I liked it a lot. It would cast into the wind better than anything I've ever experienced before too. Just very versatile.

No I have only fished lews and pq's. Whats so special about magforce z
It's a magnetic system with a centrifugal component. In my opinion it's simple, unique, genius and very effective. It is one of 2 things that made me switch solely to Daiwa. Very effective braking system.
I vote wear it out!!

I'm gonna Mike. I already worked a trade with Tim S for the 100M handle it needs

HE DID!
Even if you did shelf it, how long g do you honestly think it would sit there? Staring at it every day. I couldn't do it. Fish it!
Use it !!
Reels are meant to be fished, not just looked at

Couldn't agree more!
Jeff H can I get the tl:dr on the TD-Z including the Fuego? I can't help but feel like I'm missing out on being ignorant of these reels. I'm guessing they're an oldie but a goodie Daiwa platrom with lots of spool options, some frame material options (fuego) with something special. Hows the smoothness and noise on the reels? How do they hold up? Are they special beyond just being Magforce Z reels? I know reels like the last gen Exceler were notorios for becoming grindy and noisy but they're not the same platform as the TD-Zs. Waht do they bring to the table that a Tatula can't?
Nostalgia, pitching light baits, magnesium, legendary status. One of the most classic sought after reels of all time. It's like comparing a 69 camaro to a 2013. The answer to that for me is easy. They just don't make em like they use to.
