Shimano NASCI 2500 vs. 3000 2024

fishing user avatarBig-Bass reply :

I am looking to match my recently purchased Fenwick Aetos 7' Medium (Fast action) spinning rod with a Shimano NASCI (looks like a great reel and the colors match too).  I am up in the air between the 2500 and the 3000.  Some specs reference the 3000 to be the same body as the 2500 but with a "T" shaped knob, while others have the specs as a shallow version of the 4000.  What is the correct spec and for that rod and would you go with the 2500 or the 3000?  I would be fishing 6-8lb. test mono, flouro, and may even try braid on it in the 20lb. range or so.  The 2500 is a 5.0:1 and the 3000 is a 6.2:1 ratio.  Also, would the handle from a 2500 fit on the 3000 as an option to the "T" shaped knob with a standard paddle one?  Thanks for much for any/all responses.

fishing user avatarHulkster reply :

usually with shimanos the 3000 reel is the same spool as the 2500 only with a narrower spool arbor - deeper spool to hold a little more line.

I love the T shaped knob over the single paddle style one so you might like it. its more to grip and still feels comfortable.

I would also go 3000 over 2500 for this reason.

I am surprised the gear ratios are different, all other lines have the 3000 and 2500 as literally the same reel other than the handle knob and deeper spool. could the numbers be an error on their website? its notorious for errors.

fishing user avatartimsford reply :

IF  I was going to buy a nasci reel, it would be the 2500, since it weighs an ounce and a half less according to tackle warehouse. If the thickest diameter line you will be using is 8lb, then the 2500 holds 140 yards, which is plenty of line for any bass you hook, even on a long cast. If you do decide to get the 3000 size, then yes it is a higher gear. That's why there is an hg in the model number. And judging by the jump up in weight from the 2500, it likely has a larger body. And if you don't like the t knob, you should be able to just swap the knob out for the knob style on the 2500, or any other knob that fits shimano. It looks like a good reel, but I just don't understand how it's very close to the same weight as aluminum reels in its class but it has a plastic frame(nasci 2500 weighs 8.8oz and daiwa makes the exceler, bg, and procyon with aluminum frames at 9.2oz)

Unless you are a die hard shimano fan, I'd look at a couple of competitors reels and compare and get my hands on them before buying if possible.

I was looking for a spinning reel in the 100 dollar range for my aetos(6'3" med) and after many hours of research to narrow it down and then feeling my final choices in hand, I ended up with the daiwa procyon 2500. It has an aluminium frame that should be more durable, more bearings,  and has the same line capacity as the 3000 size shimanos, but weighs over an ounce left even with the metal frame. I love mine and would definitely recommend it. It also has magseal, which is a new magnetic oil designed by daiwa to waterproof the gears, even in salt. And it has a waterproof drag as well.

fishing user avatarPatrickKnight reply :

Traditionally Shimano's 2500 and 3000 have been the exact same with a different spool (I know its this way with my Stradics) however I have heard that Nasci does not hold true to that and the 3000 and 4000 share the same body. I don't know for sure because I haven't seen them in person yet. One thing to keep in mind the 3000 is 6.2:1 and the 2500 is 5.0:1 so that might play a larger role in your decision than line capacity. While I admit I do go with Shimano more often than not, but I do not think there is a better reel at the $100 price point than the Nasci from any company.

fishing user avatarBig-Bass reply :

I posted this same question on another forum (tackle tour) and someone over there said the 10.4oz. weight for the 3000 is likely a misprint since the Shimano Japan has it listed as a high speed model with the same body as the 2500.

fishing user avatarPatrickKnight reply :

I would get them both in hand before purchasing. With this model making such a splash at the $100 price point it should be fairly easy to get your hands on them.

fishing user avatarhoosierbass07 reply :

What's the purpose of the NASCI?  The Saharas (my favorite) are around $80 and the Symetre's (also my favorite) are around $100.  I see these NASCI for around $100.00  So is this just another $100 real than can sell or is there something really different about the NASCI compared to the Sahara and Symetre?

fishing user avatarHulkster reply :

the symetre is being discontinued. I asked on the shimano support forum over on tackletour. I was told the nasci is taking its place. so if you really love the symmetre, grab them now cause eventually they will be dropped. not sure when though.

fishing user avatarfvogel67 reply :

The Symetre is 69.99 at Cabelas.

fishing user avatarHulkster reply :

ah so they are already on sale.

The Nasci has the Hagne gear in it but from what I can tell lacks the line management features of the Symetre.

i just live-chatted with TW. they said that, as far as the new NASCI reels are concerned, the 2500-size and 3000-size bodies are different now; the rep said that the 3000- and 4000-sizes now share the same bodies only differing in their spools and that the 2500 is on its own, smaller frame.

fishing user avatarhoosierbass07 reply :

Wow, I like my two Symetre reels.  I did not like the black color at first but then came to love that color.  I feel the Symetre are built a little tougher than my Saharas.

fishing user avatarTravis Gasper reply :

I had ordered a NASCI 3000 from BPS in August and it is still on backorder, so yesterday I called and told them to send me the 2500 instead. I bought my dad a 2500 a couple weeks ago and he really likes it. The 1000 and 2500 share the same frame, then starting with the 3000 it is the bigger frame. Not like it used to be with the 2500 and 3000 sharing the same.

fishing user avatarBig-Bass reply :

Ok now I am confused...watch this...they say the 3000 is the same as the 2500 but with a larger handle knob.

fishing user avataraquaholik reply :

Shimano USA has the weight and specs correct for the 2500 and 3000 size. Same body, same weight,  different gear ratio.

Shimano Australia advertised it with worm gear but it's obviously incorrect looking at the schematics from both sites. It's clearly locomotive level wind system. Also It lacks the direct drive screw in handle of the Stradic.

Comparing it to the Symetre that is on sale, it is essentially the same except for the Hagan gearing. No seals like the Stradic FK. I was hoping direct drive screw in handle and worm gear but that would kill the Stradic FK sales. I would either buy the on sale Symetre or find a discounted Stradic FK. The Stradic FK is one heck of a reel if you can find it for $180 or less. And this is comparing it directly to the Twinpower and Stella.

I agree the FK is the best spinning reel I have ever used for $200 let alone finding one for $180.

Am I missing something here? The auction site has them for $139. Are those not legitimate FKs?

fishing user avataraquaholik reply :

I actually got mine for $160 shipped.

fishing user avatarBig-Bass reply :

Is the Stradic FK that much better than the NASCI FB?  Doubled price (aside from getting an FK online for cheaper) adds what besides the A-RB bearings and aluminum body?  I am debating now on either to get for my 7' Medium Aetos.

fishing user avataraquaholik reply :

If you ask the reel repair guy to look at a schematic, he'll highlight the difference for you.

The main difference is screw in handle to the main gear instead of a pass thru and secure on the other side scheme. The second is the worm gear for a really flat line lay(although locomotive gear has come a long way and lays line pretty flat). The third difference is sealing. Although the body of the FK is not sealed, there is seal on both side of the handle, and seal above the one way anti reverse bearing as well as seal around the rotor nut.

These are all trickle down Stella feature. I've punished my FK but I do know how to maintain them and aside from the melted felt drag washers and the drag clicker support falling out of place once, the gear shows ZERO wear. Like I said, that is not babying the gear. I've pushed it hard enough to burn up the felt drag in 3 months of use.

Since the upgrade to carbontex washers there have been zero issue. I've replaced a couple of bushing also, one in the handle, one in the worm gear, and one under the spool support. It's now Twinpower quality for a mere $5 in bearings upgrade.

Here's the main difference in the Stradic FK vs the Nasci:

Stella FE type seal that seals the shaft/rotor:

Seal around the IAR:
20150801_134838_zpsnvycaivv.jpg

Rubber seal on the roller bearing that can be removed:

And courtesy of another member, seal around the handle and the handle cap:

And here is the minus on the reel, mainly drag washer:

Don't get too excited yet. And don't let the specs of 20lbs of drag fool you. First thing you should do if you intend to fish more than 2-3lbs of drag on that reel is to replace the felt washers with carbontex washers. The rest of the reel, pinion gear, main gear, is quite capable of 5-6 lbs drag consistently but the felt drag washers will not stand up to those pressure. Here's an NCangler's 3000 felt washers after one 6lbs Albacore:

NCangler%20felt%20washers_zpskybimkfq.jp

And here's mine after eight 20-25lbs drum and 50-60 Pompanos and small Permits, and one one hour battle with a Tarpon with drag set at around 5-6lbs.

20150929_113501_zpsbv0haymh.jpg

Noticed the destroyed felt washers sinking the drag stack eventually causing the drag knob to stick and "auto tighten" as in tightening itself while the fish takes drag!

The carbontex replacement to get from smoothdrag:

The rest of the reel is great. Little power house in an 8 oz package. Seal around the spool shaft and rotor, seal around the one way roller clutch, and seal on the handle and nut cap. Also the line roller is seal with a rubber gasket.

fishing user avataraquaholik reply :

Actually the Nasci does have rotor seal and ARB seal:

fishing user avatarPatrickKnight reply :

I think all the reels with Coreprotect have some seals. I think the Nasci is a great reel at the $100 price point and the FK is a great reel at the $200 price point. Shimano really does have spinning reels down to a freaking science.

What this guy said, i have about 6 different baitcaster brands and i love all of them. From shimanos to okumas and quantums. Buy for my spinning gear i only use shimano. Other brands spinning reels feel cheap to me. A $80 dollar reel from any other brand feels like a $29 shimano sienna to me.

Hi everyone I heve new nasci model c3000 T-knob. Has a ratio 5:0:0 it's wery nice reel, very good quality , but I upgrade ball bearing in T-knob and roll. Ezo 4x7x2,5 it's the same. I thinking this version is for europe. I bought in Poland the unofficial distribution.

For the price I would recommend as the most. I have rod phenix FX803-2 (4-10LB) I think the reel balances well rod.

My assumption is this is a European only model since the U.S. release only includes the 1000FB, 2500FB, 3000HGFB (High Gear Ratio), and 4000FB.  Is the European 3000FB the same size as the 2500FB?

fishing user avatarsupelveda reply :

No 3000 size the same size body as the 4000 but a spool is small. Ratio 5.0 is optimal for me.Wersion HG is to fast for me.This model is also in the Europen distribution.

fishing user avatarPatrickKnight reply :

I just stopped into my local Cabelas and the frame on the Nasci 3000 is the same size as the Stradic FK 3000. They did not have a 2500 Nasci for me to look at it but I would assume it would share the same frame as the 3000 just like the Stradic FK does.

Sweet!  I ordered a 3000 the other day for the higher gear ratio...I wonder how it compares to a Stradic?  I also want to get a new Ci4+ 2500 for my 6'8" ML Zodias rod.  Thanks for checking out the NASCI and reporting back.

fishing user avatarBig-Bass reply :

My NASCI 3000 came today and man oh man is this a smooth reel.  I can't wait to use it on my Aetos 7' Medium.  I hope it works as well as it looks and feels.  Thanks!
