seeking input on dropshot rod choice!! 2024

Hi members!
I'm looking for decent dropshot spinning rod, maybe double as ned rod, narrowed down to Dobyns and Mojobass, but cant decide on model..
I use straight fluoro or copolymer 6 lbs, weight is 1/8 ~ 1/4. Cover is sparse to moderate. I am mostly bank fishing, rarely on kayak.
1.Dobyns Sierra 692 sf
2.Dobyns Sierra 693 sf
3.Mojobass 6'10 ML
4.Mojobass 6'8 M
I'd think ML is typical DS rod but a bit concerned about hook set with copoly lines when using texas rigging.. would M rod do better when using lines with some stretch?

Well, I'm using 8#mono on my DS rig, and I went with the Fury 702SF. I think you'd be happier with the 692, especially if you add Ned Rig to your repertoire. The 693 might have a little too much power on the hookset with the light-wire hook of a Ned, and the 692 will be better for the lighter Neds as well.
My previous rod for DS and Ned was also a ML and it served me well, just wanted to upgrade.

Dunno - new purchase this off season...we got 'hard water' here right now. Though to be fair, I have caught some 1.5-2# LMBs on my UL rig using Ned, so even if the Dobyns runs lighter than my old Avocet, it should still do the job.

I have the mojo bass in 6’10 ML. The rod feels a lot stouter than most ML but still too soft to be a true M. It’s a beautiful in between. It’s not the most balanced rod, I’ll admit that but it’s very sensitive and versatile. Also has a five year warranty. I recently explained this under another thread where someone was looking for suggestions for a spinning rod.
If you’re worried about setting the hook on light line (which I wouldn’t be with the ML mojo) look for lighter wire ewg hooks. While not the sharpest, bass pro’s xps ewg hooks have been great for me. Even the 3/0 is super light wire and I’ve never had a fish bend them out. I’ve also never hooked a giant so there’s that.

The 6'8 Mojo might be a bit too stout for what you're looking for, I had one and it was a great rod but a bit too much power. The ML Mojo would be a good bet though.
I personally use a BPS carbonlite 2.0 6'8" M-XF rated for 1/8-1/2oz lures. Similar to a st croix ML-XF. It works great for Ned, drop shot, and light texas rigged worms.
I use braid to mono leaders so that mat have some impact to the equation.

I have had the Mojo MLXF as a dropshot rod for a while now. It handles drop shot Texas rigged Roboworms or Senkos in sparse grass just fine. I’m running braid to leader on the drop shots. It has enough backbone to open up a 1/0 Owner hook. I’ve straighten two hooks trying to get big bass that ran into cover, one in a brush pile and another into a thick hydrilla/Lilly pad field.

IMO drop shot from shore is a poor choice unless targeting beds.
Split shot rig is a effective uphill presentation using floating type worms.
ML drop shot rod is also a poor choice when casting and working a rig uphill when shore fishing. ML is preferred for verticle drop shot rigs to lightly shake the line inducing slight movements into the soft plastic.
I use and suggest you consider Major Craft Don Iovino finesse spinning rod for drop shot or slip shot rigs using Maxima 5 lb Ultra Green copolymer line.
I have only finesse bass fishing with spinning outfits over 30 years and know something about it.
Dobyns FR 703 S would be a better choice then 702 for your application IMO.

If you really want a dropshot rod to double as a Ned Rig rod, get the Sierra 702sf.
The 703sf won't be the best dropshot option, but it would be the better option for more of a variety of other baits like the Ned Rig, and you could still dropshot on it.
I have the Champion Extreme HP 702c, and it's basically my Ned Rig rod, but I would use it for dropshot in a pinch, but it has a faster tip than the Sierra's. For dropshot I use a Lew's TP-1 Speed Stick ML Spinning Rod. But, truthfully I hate fishing the dropshot, even though I have been giving it a go.

Tom, what Dobyns model Sierra or Fury would you recommend for finesse lures or would you recommend a different rod company? I mainly fish Ned rigs (1/16oz) and was looking to upgrade from a 6’ Light power ugly stick. I really like the shorter length of 6’-6’6”. I also have a Daiwa Tatula bass rod MEd power(older model with the black Eva foam) But think it might be too stiff for Ned rigs. Thanks for any advice I really appreciate it

I’ve got a dobyns colt ml sight unseen off of Tw( I know not same rod ) and I should have gotten a medium. Rods kinda useless unless I’m in open water. Once in open water it is nice rod for ned, tubes, drop shot. I’m sure a couple steps abouve the colt would be even better. I bought it on line and now I won’t buy a rod with out touching it first

Up through this past year I'd been using a ML/F Avocet combo. Purchased a Fury 702SF which I'll be mounting my Trion-30 on as the replacement. I'll be doing Drop-shot, Ned, Tubes, Wacky with it...same things I did with the Avocet.
If you're looking for a shorter rod - Fury 661SF (6'6") or Sierra 692SF (6'9") would be the ones to get.

Contact Dobyns they are good at exchanging and upgrading their rods.

I use Iovino's fineese spinning rod MXF 1/8-3/8 lures 6'9" as noted in my post.
The rod is about 3 power compared to Dobyns with faster action tip and casts 1/6 oz Ned rigs OK. Check with Dobyns they may have a Sierra closer to what you are looking for discounted.

I did not know that about upgrading. I knew they were good about damaged rods. I broke the tip off my original dobyns. Cut off info section of the rod and 30 bucks and got a new one.
I’m going to keep it. If I ever get back to fishing the rivers again it would make a good small river rod

Dobyns sells refurbished rods usually when anglers are upgrading. Don't know the details about time limits, shipping and credits etc., The Store option lists what's available but it's not kept up to date all the time so calling works better.

Late to the party. Apologies. My thought would be to go longer to increase your casting distance (from bank or boat). I do more dragging than dropping...lol. I actually called Dobyns for input on a drop shot/ neko rig combo. I use a shorter (6’8”) Zodias for ned. They recommended a CE 742 which I’ve paired with a ci4 2500 spooled with braid/flouro leader. I have been very happy. Good luck.????

I'm 2+ seasons in now to using Dobyn's Fury's almost exclusively.
I have several 702 and one 703 spinning rods.
They are all used with 2000 sized Daiwa LT reels, all spooled with 10lb braid as main line. 702's get used with 6 + 8 lb leaders, 703 with 8 + 10 lb leaders.
I almost have no use for the 703 and won't be buying any more, and will probably replace it with another 702
The 702' s on the other hand are as good of a "do-all" spinning rod as I have ever found.
I drop shot, ned rig, neko rig, flick shake, swim small grubs/swimbaits, fish lite wire micro finesse jigs, drag small tubes and football jigs, skip weightless plastics under docks, fish little cranks and jerkbaits, and more with the 702's. They are powerful enough to handle 5-6lb fish, and have enough tip to protect light 6lb leaders, and load up well for baits that are small like 1/15th oz ned rigs.
My buddy loves the Sierra line, and feels the same way about the 692 vs the 693

You'll love it.
About the only thing the 703 does better is fish heavier baits in heavier cover...but I don't use spinning gear for that, so it's not a rod that has much use for me.

Drop shotting brush piles with a Zoom finesse worm Texas rigged is one of my favorite ways to fish. I have a Dobyns Fury SF703 and I would quit drop shotting if all rods were a 3 power Dobyns. I am sure someone uses a 703 to DS, but not me. Can't comment on a 2 power Dobyns as I have never used one. However I do have the other rod you mentioned a ST Croix Mojo MLXF. I have a first gen Mojo and an Avid MLXF. IMO the St Croix MLXF spinning rod blank was made for drop shotting (great Ned Rig rod also). The second gen Mojos are made withe the SC3 blank that the Avid is made of. My advice when asked about a DS rod is to buy the St Croix MLXF blank that one's bank account allows. I also have a 6'8" first gen Mojo MXF. For me not suitable for drop shotting. If I could only have one spinning rod in the $100 range for drop shotting/ Ned rig/ wacky/ shakey head it would be a Falcon Bucoo SR Cranker Spin BRS-4-17.

I'm trying to picture this drop shot Texas rig. You have a drop shot weight on your tag end, and your worm is on a hook above that, and then a bullet weight above that on your main line?

I think he's meaning an offset worm hook in the drop-shot position, so instead of just nose-hooking the plastic, it's rigged like for a T-Rig.
