I have fished with spinning reels all my life so being the brave guy i am i bought me a cheap baitcaster and i hate the thing. all my fishing buddies say if i get a good baitcaster i won't go back to spinning reels. so i'm asking you guys out there for the best baitcaster for the money. no gimmicks 8-) zimmy
Keep an eye on the BassResource.com Flea Market. Shimano Curado baitcasters pop up all of the time, I think there are two offered now @ $150 shipped. You will not be disappointed in this reel.

thanks roadwarrior
funny you should mention the shimmo curado because that one of the two i had it narrowed down to : zimmy
This is a pretty popular reel on this Forum, at least among the members of the Shimano Posse!
i believe it ,i've got 10 shimmno spinning reels and love everyone : zimmy
zimmy,
I've fished baitcasters for 20+ years, but last year's model of the Curado was my first 'good' baitcaster. I couldn't believe the difference that a quality reel makes. If you get the Curado, you can't go wrong. I have 5 baitcasters currently, and the Curado is still my favorite.
Good fishing,
Hillbilly
I know I will wake up the Shimmano posse with this but here goes. Check out the Ardent XS. At $250 it is a little expensive, but a great reel. 3 year warranty and American made. Right now you can buy last years model for $200..........Al

hey hillbilly
you talking about the 200 dhsv reel
zimmy
that was good roadwarrior
OK, RW- I surrender..............Al
No way!
We still need to hear from our Daiwa, Pfluger, Abu Garcia and Quantum guys.
There is no "best" reel, just "favorite."
My Curado is a great reel but then so are some of my Pfleugers, Daiwas, Quantums and BPS'. The Curado may be a bit more user friendly but it doesn't eliminate the need for practice. Bait casting is learned by picking out your share of backlashes.

I'm a 20+ year Abu guy... but I have recently joined the posse, a few 50 MG's will do that to a man. ...lol I'm keeping my mouth shut on Daiwa.
What's the budget? My opinion.... If you can swing $200 or so get a 50MG and you will throw the spinning reels into the lake!! ...lol If you can only swing $100 or so, try a 100 size citica. You will like it also.
Im a fan of Daiwa's Fuego and Sol models. I use the Fuego for larger baits and the Sol for smaller stuff.
I use the Quantum Accurist 500CX. Very smooth and rock solid. I love em.

Tell them about SHIMANO RW
well if i read ur post right
u all ready bought a baitcast reel and hate it
i dont know what advice to give id hate to say buy this reel and u hate that 1 2
i own 3 shimanos 2 mg's and a curado all awesome reels
but they start at about 160 and go up to around 250
so i would say get the quantuim 500cx around 50 maybe alittle more its a great reel pratice with it and if u like it or get it down then u can move on to the more pricey stuff
There's a barely used Garcia Revo SX on the flea market now going for $125. Curado, meet the new kid in town with a drag system that kicks your azz. ;D
we"ll you guys have given some great input on baitcasters
just for the record i love the baitcaster i just hate all the rats nests zimmy

Try the daiwa alpha, fuego, sol or viento. You should be able to pick those up for $200 or less. For the life of me I just can't figure out why the "posse" wants to waste time opening up the side plate to adjust the brake settings when on the daiwas it is just a click away.

And bringing dirt inside.
Right now my favorite is my newest....Alpha Type F but the rest of my TD-Zs and Quantums are nearby.

If you know how to use a BC all you should have to adjust it is one time. I adjust it when I mount the reel and spool it up. No waste of fishing time.
The Abu Garcia C3 series rock
I Have 4 Couado 6.3:1 and 2 Citica 5.3:1 and a BassPro Qualifier 6.3:1 Bait caster's .I still have and use Spining Gear but for Burning Spinner and Crank Baits theirs nothing like a Good Bait caster.

Shimano fan and disses the Navy... we are not going to get along, lol...
I am a BIG fan of Daiwa and an 8 year veteran of the U.S. Navy.
To answer the poster's ?, I would suggest a TD Advantage HST. It runs for $130 and for the price, it is a solid reel. Once you get better with bait casting reels, then you can step it up to the TD Sol, Fuego, TD-X, Zillion and ultimately the STEEZ.
Just playing, I would never diss the Navy or any other branch of the service for that matter.
Regarding reels, there are a number of good reels at almost ever pricing point. We all have our favorites, so that's probably going to be the recommendation that we make.

I know you made the comment in good humor. A lot of things said on message boards are taken out of its original context and for this reason, I tend to add a "lol" or "JK" after some of my comments just in case. haha.
Well, it is time to go fishing. Hope you have a great Christmas Eve.
No one has mentioned my favorite reel under $200, the Shimano Calcutta. Only has 2 ball bearings (where do the other reels have their 10 ball bearings, anyway). Most important are two that mount the spool, a good drag which it has, a good backlash preventative system which it has, a good anti reverse which it has, well made in all other aspects, has lasted 15 years of pretty hard fishing and still casts like new. I have a few other reels with more bearings, but they don't cast as well.
When I buy a new reel I may go Curado based on all the stuff I've read here, but if bucks are an issue, check out the Calcutta.
More important than getting everyone's opinion of their favorite would be to find out where we can try out the various reels before we buy. How about some help on this issue, guys? (and gals, sorry)
