STX Purchase Experience : Update 2024

fishing user avatarKoop reply :

Some of you may remember a few weeks ago I had purchased an STX on ebay, received it and it turned out to be either a) the wrong ratio reel or B) a different handle that wasn't part of the original reel.

Well I had called the seller, who treated me a bit poorly telling me I should just sell it off to someone and finally agreed to refund my money if I sent the reel back first.

Well I played it safe, filed a dispute through paypal, got all the info in there, seller never replied in the paypal dispute.

I called the seller once again and was told they had responded in paypal and I must just not be able to see it and to send the reel back immediately or I would not get a refund.

I once again called paypal and explained this to them, they checked everything and stated that the seller had attempted to post no comments about the dispute, and recommended I escalte the case to a claim.

Well I took their advise, wrote up a little summery of what had taken place, and the paypal rep escalated it to a claim for me. Both the seller and I were sent emails, stating that the seller had 10 business days to respond to the claim and work out a plan ie: seller formally agrees in paypal to refund me upon recipt of the reel.

Well 10 days went by and the seller never responded...

I contacted paypal this morning and they refunded the money to my account and notified me it was my option to now return the reel or keep the reel, that they do not require or expect me to return the reel as the seller had been given ample time and notification of the situation.

So now I have my money returned to my account and the STX still sitting on my desk.  Debating to be the nice guy and return it or just keep it.

LOL you beat me to it.

fishing user avataradclem reply :

I would send the reel back. Send it back delivery confirmation and insured. The only reason I say this is because you received your refund and although he did not hold up too his end at all this will at least show him that you are a man of your word and that you don't hide behind a keyboard and monitor like some people do and maybe just maybe next time he will be a more stand up person.

Just my opinion,

Later, B)

fishing user avatargrimlin reply :

I hate Ebay's dispute center....I'm glad they came through for you.Good call on playing it safe!

Now just take the money you got back and custom/fix it to your liking.  B) That's what i would do.Pimp it out.... ;D

fishing user avatarfathom reply :

glad things worked out for you.

hate to say it but, the right thing to do now would be the bigger man and ship the reel back to him.

he may deserve never seeing the reel again but, you won't deserve the karma following that reel if you don't.

am just saying.

fishing user avatarseyone reply :

I wouldn't ship it back to him. He had his chance at a proper exchange. Sending it back teaches him nothing.

fishing user avatarskunked_again reply :

i would offer that the seller could pay for shipping to get back his reel. cuzz thats what it is, his reel. if he chooses not to do so then its yours with a clear conscience.

then do you buying on site here.

I agree contact him so he can pay for the return shipping. If he does not respond the the reel is yours. I only purchase from EBay stores and have yet to have a problem.

Why? So he can do this to somebody else?

Mind you this guy never returned the money or made it right.PayPal gave him(Koopa) the money, not that dude.Paypal has a claim against him now....so,his account probably is now suspended and his Ebay static is now ruined.Giving him the reel back means he will have the reel and money now.because of dudes like him is the reason our fees for using paypal gets higher and higher.Giving the reel back isn't going to fix anything.

When you are selling something you need to get all the details and facts down.It was a crappy thing he did and is considered a scam.

I would either fix it to get the handle right or gear right,he's going to have to put money into the reel to make it right anyways. If he was given the right reel in the first place none of this would have happened.

fishing user avatarCWB reply :

Wait for him to contact you and ask for the reel back.

If and when he does, ignore him as he did you.

Was it a NIB reel or listed as used?

Was it a NIB reel or listed as used?

It was listed as used, 6.4:1 ratio. When it arrived it looked good, except that the gear ratio on the star drag looked like it had been scratched as to make it unreadable, however the 2nd number in the ratio was clearly a 1, making it a 7.1:1.

When I contacted the seller about this (the first time I contacted him through email) I was informed that it was the the handle and peices from a 7.1:1 but the reel was a 6.4:1.

Upon further prodding from me he revealed it was actually a refurbished reel - or so he said this time... I could never get a clear answer out of him as to what the true ratio really is if its a 6.4:1 with a 7.1:1 retreive on it or if its just a 7.1:1.

When I tested how many inches it retreived it adds up to being a 7.1:1, so I am fairly certain he was trying to be deceptive by scratching off the gear ratio... trying to make it seem like it may have been a 6.4:1

Either way it was either a) deception or b)a refurbished reel which definately is not what was in the description. All of this confusion and lack of a straight answer is what made be go through paypal with the claim as I was uncomfortable dealing with him.

Here is the actual description:

ABU GARCIA REVO STX LEFT HANDED GR 6.4:1 BAIT CAST

Item condition: Used

how does the reel work? is it possible the guy thought all along the reel was a 6.4:1?

fishing user avatarcart7t reply :

I recognized the item description as soon as you posted it.

bevsfishingsupplies

He was formerly selling as Harry's fishing reels or something like that over a year ago. He sells a ton of reels, his Feedback score (at 1527 right now) isn't close to how many he actually sells. I doubt he takes the time to go over every reel he posts nor actually knows if any of them have problems. I have probably purchased around 40-50 reels from this guy in the past. Maybe more, I can't remember. I've only had a couple problems from him and he resolved my issues pretty quickly without resorting to the paypal resolution panel. I get the feeling he has some connections with BPS reel repair even though he's located in Florida as he sells a lot of BPS product.

BTW, as for his item descriptions?  They're copy and paste, over and over.  He has never given an item description that actually reflected what the reel he was selling looked like or performed as.  In my experience, most of the time they're accurate or even better than described, a few times not.

fishing user avatarKoop reply :

That is who it was, and he has a great rating on ebay that is why I originally thought it would be fine.

The reel works great, no mechanical issues that I have been able to tell.

Maybe he just didn't have the time for me.

He may sell tons of reels but I still feel he should have listed the reel accurately as a refurbished reel or atleast the correct ratio.

I don't know for sure yet what I will be doing, but I will most likely be returning the reel to him as I did get my money back. But I can garuntee it will be at my pace and wont be going out of my way to do so..

Still frustrated over this whole ordeal... Even though it has all been worked out in my favor this still left a bad taste in my mouth as one of my first ebay experiences.

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

Told ya Koopa! What Cart said is what i said as well!!!

fishing user avatarcart7t reply :

Like I said, whether he was operating as Harry's fishing reels or his new handle, Bevs,  his MO was the same.  His item descriptions are cut and pastes.  In fact, he uses the same photo's over and over too.  His reels normally sell for quite a bit less than others being sold even if they're the same model, etc.  I'm sure the reason is nobody wants to take the chance of purchasing a used reel where the item description is obviously merely copied over and over along with pictures that are not representative of the exact reel being sold.

fishing user avatarvatech reply :

Keep it!

fishing user avatarinfamous512 reply :

This is one of the main reason I try to stay away from ebay. I've been looking for new revos on ebay lately. (PM me about this seller's ebay ID so that I know whom to watch out for)

fishing user avatarrubba bubba reply :

I bought at least one reel from bev as well and although it was used, it was pristine.  No complaints from me, but that's just 1 transaction of thousands of his.

fishing user avatarTrippyJai reply :

Wait until he requests for you to send the reel back to him. The troubles you had to go through in order to get the refund is ridiculous in my opinion. As a seller, he should have been more helpful. No point in being a nice guy when he didn't even bother to reply to your emails with a straight up answer when you needed clarification.

Treat people the way they treat you. Simple as that, unless he had a legitimate reason for being too busy for you.

fishing user avatarMicro reply :

The guy's a fraud.  I'd take an engraver and engrave "REJECT" on the frame.  Then send it back.

the seller would just engrave "inspected by" in front of reject.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Keep the reel or throw it away and be done with it. You owe

this guy nothing. For someone "in the business" to operate

as he has is despicable.

>B)

fishing user avatarScorpio reply :

If it works well, I would donate it to a good cause.

fishing user avatarDavid P reply :

As someone else posted, maybe he truly thought it was a 6.4:1 . I have 5 STXS, most of my gear ratio writing is warn off. I have all 7:1's but if I didn't, I'd probably be a bit confused.

None the less, be the bigger man. Email me, tell him you got your money back but you'd still like the chance to return the reel, he just needs to cover the shipping.

fishing user avatarfish-fighting-illini reply :

Screw the guy he's an idiot. You did everything in your power to resolve the situation w/o Paypal and in a classy manor. The guy acted like a clown and lied to you as well.

I wonder why someone who sold so many items decided to up and change his ebay name?

Give it 30days If he wants the reel he can ask for it and can send the return shipping else tell him to buzz off.

After 30days if no response do some research and find a deserving underpriveledged kid and give it to him or her. If you want to couple it with a rod I'll send $20 towards one or I will send a rod that I no longer use.

You owe the clown nothing if he can't take the time to do proper busines forget him.

If you go the kid route or are thinking of it just pm me.

FFI - AKA Matt Crum

fishing user avatarBenoBreath reply :

You handled the problem well.

If the seller doesn't ask for the reel back, keep it as a backup.

fishing user avatarJake... reply :

all i can say is the seller sounds FISHY to me. everything you wrote about him is dishonest.

he told you to "get rid" of the reel on ebay, probably so it will be "your" problem now. then only offered a refund if you ship it first, thats shady.

didn't respond to any if the emails, no response to the dispute. again thats shady

probably tried to scam you. looks like you beat him. if u send the reel back your a fool

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

Dudes, this thread is almost 3 weeks old.

fishing user avatarMojoGarcia reply :

I'd send him the handle. haha
