Last fall I decided to try a few (new to me) lines.
As some of you know, my brand recommendations have
been Yo-Zuri Hybrid and Hybrid Ultra Soft for years.
These remain my preferred lines for most applications.
The lines tested and still in use are the following:
Power Pro (50/12), Trilene 100% (10 lb), Seaguar
InvizX (#8) & AbrazX (#12),and recently, Tatsu #15.
Power Pro: Well, I still hate braid! However, using
braid (direct tie) has significantly improved my jig
fishing. I would NOT recommend PP, but I will be looking
at Fireline and Samurai.
Trilene 100%: Third generation Vanish. Okay for the price,
but I will never use it again.
Seaguar InvizX: OUTSTANDING manageability on spinning
tackle. Highly recommended.
Seaguar AbrazX: Outstanding on baitcasting gear.
Highly recommended.
Seaguar Tatsu: Too expensive for everyday fishing.
However, this is BY FAR the finest fishing line I
have ever used.

I bought some InvisX 12# and have been using it on a baitcaster this year. I really like it also. Besides being more abrasion resistant, is there any other reason to use abrazX on a bc?

Nope, greater abrasion resistance in the AbrazX formula
is the defining feature.

How would you compare the trilene and abrasix? I've been impressed with stren (trilene) in #12. Very very strong and abrasion resistance has been fine, but not the best handling line Ive used.

Thanks for the report RW. Maybe I'll try some Seagar line next season. My limited experience with fluorocarbon has been that it tends to kink easily. I'm curious how this line holds up in use. I know you have long been an advocate of changing line only when needed. I have been an old school believer in keeping fresh line on the reel, but since I've started using YZ and P-Line treated with KVD I am rethinking my position. While the Seagar lines are more expensive, if they hold up well, the cost of use isn't as hard to justify.

Initially, I was impressed with the Trilene 100%. The line
was very manageable. However, the Trilene broke very
easily when hung-up and once (the last time) when
I lifted a 2 1/2 - 3 lb bass by hand. I respooled, threw
that and whatever was left of the filler spool away.
Seemed to me that its Vanish heritage was still in play.
The reason I gave Trilene 100% an "Okay for the price"
is because I was using 10# test and I suspect 12# might
make the grade. Still, I won't be fishing that line.

10# Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon caught this fish, which wrapped itself around two 8" steel, zebra mussel encrusted dock pilings. 4 lbs. 3 oz. They earned my trust that day. Line behaves nothing like Vanish. Now, the 6 and 8# sizes......junk. InvisX for light stuff all the way.

The 12 is friggin strong. Last month it proved itself to me while pond hopping. I had accidentally left the drag on my beater revo sx pretty much fully tight. Was jigging a yum houdini shad directly in front of me when a 25'' fish inhaled it at the bank. The fish surged hard as soon as it was hooked but the stren held great. Since then I've dragged about half a dozen "chunks" up to 4lbs through trees with not one issue.
I'd really reccomend giving the trilene/stren in #12 a try RW. Its a trustworthy flouro at a good price. Greentop sporting goods here locally sells 110 yard spools for $2.99

RW, what don't you like about fishing with braid? You also said "I would NOT recommend PP". Why?
Just to let you know I don't fish with braid, but have been thinking lately of giving it a try.

i don't care for braid either.. the only rig of mine with braid is my frog rig.. power pro is a braid of the past though, it is flat and digs into the spool. nowadays there are way better and more round braids like suffix braid, daiwas samurai, and the new fireline

I too have been looking at new lines. Several years back R/W turned me on to Yo-Zuri which is now my line of choice. I also do not use braid because it has no stretch.
I do not use Trilene or Power Pro.
I have used all 3 of the Seaguar lines. I thought the InvizX had to much stretch. The AbrazX is a good line but I totally agree with R/W on the Tatsu it is a great line & if I were still tournament fishing i would be using it on several of my rigs.
I do not carry a spinning rig with me, in fact I can't remember the last time I used one. So I can't comment on how these lines work on spinning gear. I have 6 & 6 1/2 ft rods that are in the 8 to 15lb line class with Scorpion Mg's on them that work on the lighter baits for me.

I've tried PP, too. It's been awhile so maybe its improved. I thought it was rough and bled color like crazy - to the point of having green stains on the reel. I've tried black Fireline and that bled color like crazy, too. I thought it was very smooth, though. Never tried Samurai. At my local store, Samurai is about $10 per spool more than Stren Sonic Braid for the same amount of line. I've pretty much settled on Stren Sonic Braid and Sufix Braid, which are about equal in my book with respect to color retention and smoothness. Maybe a slight edge to Stren. I, too, hate braid. I'm trying to use it more but no love affair has started.

I have 20lb on my flipping outfit. It has a lot of memory but settles down after a few casts. I've found it to be very sensitive and abrasion resistant. I've had it wrapped around wooden pilings with screws and nails and it came through great. 20 lb is pretty beefy though and this is the only test I've used.

I have the opposite opinion. I hated it. I tried it about 2-3 years ago so maybe something has changed. But I could scarcely keep it on a spinning reel. I though it was way too springy. Its the only line that consistently snapped at the knot. Like I said, maybe things have changed.
I, too, like Yo-Zuri Hybrid for most of my fishing. I used 8lb test on my rods that have Daiwa Sols. I use 10lb and 12 lb on heavier outfits. 12lb is the heaviest I use.
Right now I'm using P-Line CXX on a couple of outfits. I'm trying it because it is highly recommended and because its easier for me to find than Yo-Zuri. I also like 600 yard spools which my local BPS carries. My BPS doesn't carry 600 yard spools of Yo-Zuri. So far, I like it a lot and can't tell a whole lot of difference between it and Yo-Zuri.

it must be that 10# 100% flouro that is weak cause i had the same breakage issues , also threw it away . been using Toray Super Hard Strong , i love this stuff !! very strong line that i don't have to worry about breaking on me . it costs a little more but so much better than P-line , Seagaur , and Berkely lines !!!
BTW , i still can't get over the fact that so many people like Yo-zuri :-? , one of if not thee worst lines i have ever used :

At the risk of repeating myself...the invisx, and abrasx really disappointed me, in so far as, Not being abrasive resistant at all, other than that, I liked the lines, up until I lost 3 Quality fish in a row..and it was the line that broke, not the knot, ect..I have caught fish in the same spot with my trusted yozuri lines, and never had any on them break.
As for braid..you either love it, or hate it. I hated the brands I tried, until I used the Diawa Samuri.

RW, been using 8lb Trilene 100% for two seasons. Not one knot failure or break-off. Even dragged up a tree last year.

It's no wonder why there are so many lines to choose from.
Look at all the comments here from guys we know and who
pay a lot of attention to detail. Same line, different experiences.

Do a web search for green top sporting goods in Richmond , VA. It's stren, not Trilene. I thought the price was a mistake when I saw it, but no its correct. Your best bet is to call them and ask for Stan.

RW, you should try Sunline Super Sniper FC on your spinning reels if you're searching for a really good fluorocarbon line. It's pricey, but in this case, you get what you pay for.
The Berkley 100% in my opinion is great line (especially on baitcasters) and is nothing like Berkley Vanish. Not even a little bit. I pull brushpiles off the bottom and up to the boat with 8# Berkley 100%. With some other carbon lines doing something like that will cause the knot to slip if it doesnt break first.

X2 I was thinking the same thing. I wonder why it is that so many of us have such differing experiences with the same products. I have been using trilene 100% for 3 years now. I mostly use the 15 lb and I have only had a break off when I should have retied . Like any line, if you let it get nicked up all day and don't cut and re tie it, it will eventually break. But I have pulled in snagged limbs crawled across rocks etc, etc. I think it's one of the best for casting reels. I hate it for spinning reels though. I found Seaguar invisx seems to work a lot better for spinning reels. I use 6lb with that and have very little problems. I also hate braid and just cant understand how so many guys can love it to the point of using it most of their rigs. I was down to only using it for very thick weeds and my C rig rod for the no stretch factor. I now have 20 lb trilene on those because I just hated using braid. I need to try a few of the lines you guys have mentioned here, but it still seems very strange that so many have such different opinions on them.

Yeah, that's true. It is interesting. I'll tell you what, though. I tried Invisix at RW's suggestion (12lb on my Curado), and I love that for Tx. rigs. Then I also tried Yo Zuri ultra soft 10lb on my Spinning setup, and love that, too. I also am not really in love with braid, except I just started using Samurai 40lb on my Fuego, and the stuff is amazing! Now I'm gonna strip the 50lb PP from my frog setup, and replace it with 55lb Samurai. The stuff puts other braids to shame, and fishes like a dream. Great report on what you've been finding, RW, I'm sure you were very thorough in your testing, too.

Sunline Sniper is a really good FC and handles GREAT on spinning reels, I dont fish spinning reels so I dont use it much however On the spinning reels I do have thats whats spooled on them.. Sunline Shooter is THE BEST FC IMHO its the most Sensitive, strong, holds up to abrasion best, awesome knots, smooth tying FC Ive ever used... and I have used them all the only one that comes close to shooter is Toray Bawo Premium Plus and it still really dont compare.... If you liked Tatsu then you will LOVE Shooter...Another amazing FC thats priced a little better then shooter and is really good is Megabass Dragon call FC Its my 2nd choice in FC's behind Shooter and in front of the Toray Bawo...
When it comes to braid Daiwa is the only way to go!!! nothing is in the same ball park with it... if you dont want to use the Daiwa braid and want something else then my next choice is Toray Bawo Finesse Braid and it is really good, has everything the Daiwa braid has to offer HOWEVER it cost most its around 40 bucks for 82 yards... I have it on 4 reels and the reason its on them is because I bought 4 spools to test out wondering just how good it could be for the price and its the same as the Daiwa stuff I would never buy it again unless I cant get the Daiwa stuff...
When it comes to Nylon/copolys lines I fish only three and they are..#1 Sunline Shooter Defier Nylon Monofilament and #2 Sunline Machine Gun Cast #3 Toray Bawo Polyamide Plus.. If you dont want to pay those high prices for those lines but want a really good Nylon line Sunline Super Natural Monofilament is good and priced REALLY good its 10 bucks for 330 yards.. I have used it on a few reels in fact just took it off 2 reels a few days ago. I will respool a few top water setups with it when I take the Polyamide off them.
Another really good FC that is great and priced well is the Sugoi Fluorocarbon (Gary Yamamoto line) its priced around 18-20 bucks for 130 yards and the stuff is stellar its one of the most sensitive FC's out there close to shooter in that area BUT shooter is far less stiff then the Sugoi line other then that is awesome and I have used it a lot before I fished Shooter and Dragon call.
RW what # test FC do you use the most? Let me know and Ill send you a spool of Shooter to try out in that pound test if I have it or the closest I have to that test and you can give the guys your opinion on it! I have some spools laying around in lower pound test that I wont ever use so I dont mind given you one so you will fall in love with it lol.

Man, I would really love to pull the plug on some of the pricey FC lines to test them out. I like AbrazX, but XPS fluoro has been really good to me. I've heard nothing but good things about Shooter and Tatsu. Maybe the next time I buy some line...

I only use braid and I much prefer it, I fish only spinning gear. I'm not all that fussy on the brand but mostly use PP because of the availability, it has served me well. Very few wind knots, strong, ties a good knot, and the price is right, what else do I need?

RW - can you elaborate on what pound test, what setup, and what type of fishing (moving baits/plastics/whatever) you think it is best suited for?

The line is #15 (.013" diameter); spooled on a CH50MG/ Dobyns
683C. For the most part, I have been fishing a Sworming Hornet/
LFT Live Magic Shad on this set-up. However, 3/8 oz jigs, dropshot,
shakey head or any soft plastic would be fine.
The line has virtually no memory so far. Strong, sensitive and tough
are other attributes. I don't notice much stretch and knots are not an issue.
I think you might notice that the Tatsu seems exceptionally smooth.
This might be the result of highly calibrated, uniform extrusion.

As per your recommend, I have been using Yozuri ultra soft #12 in clear open lakes for Jigs, wormin, senkos, etc.
For drop shot I use Invis-X #8. I have been planning to down size to #6 Yozuri, but a couple of local guys suggest Invis-X #6 instead. Which one would you use for DS?

Funny how one guy loves a specific line while someone else does not. I guess to each his own. I love braid and hate Fluorocarbon, just had bad experience with it. Either way, if you like something and it works for you why change?

Yo-Zuri #6 is stronger if you think that's important.
Otherwise, either line will be fine.

The 6lb youzuri ultrasoft will have Much better abrasion resistance, and will be much stronger than the Invisx..I speak from experience on these 2 lines. In fact, I stopped using fluro, and went back to my trusted Yozuri.
Example..I fish some saltwater in a float tube..I hooked into what I think was a barndoor Hali, fought it for 40 mins. until it broke off, that was with 8lb yozuri ultrasoft.

I use either P-line Floroclear or Yozuri Ultra Soft lines for most situations. I've been using the Yozuri on my spinning outfits for a few years now and earlier this year pulled a 22# channel catfish out of the Antelope Valley portion of the CA Aqueduct on the Yozuri Ultra soft 8# line.
I'd have the Yozuri on all my reels but it's harder to find localy.

Yep...After this year's testing...Yo-Zuri is the winner.
