It is all personal preference. Both reels would be good for the technique you describe.

Yeah the 201E7 looks good and is lighter than the STX 09, but the STX has 11 bearings, a carbon matrix drag system, and an externally adjustable breaking system. I like the STX 09 better than the newer one is because it is more plain and simple, and I don't have an liking for the swept handle and that new gold drag star. That is a bit of a downgrade for me. What about durability? I have heard that the STX's paint wears off easily. Is the Curado E7 more durable in that regard?

Two years ago I switched all of my baitcasting reels to STXs and E Series Curados. I feel they are pretty much equal as far as quality and value goes.
Let it come down to which one feels better in your hand when it's mounted on a rod, which handle grip you prefer, etc. Because both will last a good long time and will perform admirably.

A big consideration here is gear ratio. You can buy Revos with a 6.4 the E7 is 7.01. I will go with the slower retrieve all the way. Shimano needs to give us the choice of a 6.4 gear ratio in that line up

I own both, and that's a tough call. I guess I'd trade my '09 STX for another 201E7, but not my '10 STX. The Curado took to supertuning and abec 7 spool bearings better than the STX (more of a difference).

Im pretty sure my STX's are lighter the the E7 I had, but I could be wrong. As far as durability goes they both show wear marks, boat rub and that kind of thing. But I think the Revo shows less in the same amount of time. One thing I hated about the Shimano is the plastic parts( which I broke). The biggest difference is my Revo's dont screech when I cast em.

the stx is heavier than the curado. stx (8.9) curado (7.6). the stx is the heaviest revo in their line up. the revos do have a crappy paint job on them.. i own several shimanos and only 5 revos, 1 S, 2 SX, 1 STX, 1 PREMIER. but all my shimano cores and curados look like they just came out of the box and some are a few years old. Cant say the same about my revos the paint is chipping and wearing off. Dont get me wrong my revos may look rough but they are great reels and i will continue to buy them alongside my shimanos, execpt the SX its the only revo that i don't care for, both of mine acquired this very loud buzzing and then a clacking noise when casting after about a month of use.

Not sure where ya got the 6 bearing from. I have 4 brand new Premiers and they have 9 bearings. They lighten the reels many ways but 2 of them are the bearing count, but they use a higher grade bearing. The other is removing a few drag washers, as it is reduced to about 18lbs of drag. There are other difference's, but those are obvious. The handle on the Premier is very "Cozy" if you will. Its inviting, makes ya wanna hold it. The performance is awesome, much like the STX, but a bit easier on the casting effort. Its a bit smoother all the way around.
Think of it this way, they took a great reel(STX) and made it better. Its the lightest in class, and meant to compete with much higher priced reels. Its the way to go if your after a very light combo. If you are gonna pair it with a not so light rod, then I feel its kind of a waste. Keep in mind the Veritas and Verdict are lighter then most rods 2-3 times their cost. So pairing it with either of those makes a super light combo at half the price of others.
I still love my STX's, and Ill use the hesk out of em. I just got 4 more along with those Premier's. I just pair them accordingly. My worm and lighter jig rods get Premier's, flippin and punching get S's and STX's, reaction baits get STX's with the exception of my rip bait rod. Optimizing a combo is the best way to save money, and experience subtle difference's.

Interesting, because in these parts most are moving to Abu. I got a bunch of Curado's and they are all for sale. Dont seem to be going anywhere at the moment. >

I have both and like both. I have more confidence in casting my Curado on lighter baits and the STX for heavier setups. Both are quality reels.

Oh jeez I am sorry, I am referring to the older model Premier. I am attracted to it a bit more because it is more simple and down to business than the in your face new cosmetics of the new Premier. That is not to say the new Premier is one hell of a machine.... ;D
RoadWarrior..... you and what army? Well, I own both brands. I can say that I dropped a Curado 101D on a cement floor, picked it up, and no marks or affects were noticeable AT ALL. I do think a lightweight reel would be nice for constant casts and fast retrieves with spinnerbaits and jigs. Now it is 09 Premier vs. Shimano Curado E7, believe it or not. What is a better option? One is a 6:3.1 and one is a 7:1.1. Is the newer "generation" of baitcast reels, even one in a mid class (Curado E7), better than a high end class reel (Premier 09') of the last "generation"?

That's right. Taste each one and buy the one that tastes better. Seriously, ask the guy behind the counter to show you the reels, then lick them. Really hard. Lick all around the level wind and the handles. Buy the one that really lights your taste buds up.

You can't go wrong with either of these reels. I see no inherent design or quality flaws in either. Personal preference.

Kent is very strong in his convictions.
But I am not defecting and I don't see that happening around here, the Revos are the top selling bait casters at the local Cabela's store. And I see more of them every year. The Premiere and the STX are sweet reels I will be adding another Premier to my collection before spring.
