How much will a rod be affected if the tip is broke off? 2024

fishing user avatarJkring reply :

I can buy some st croixs that have lost 2- 3 inches. They are obviously heavily discounted (only reason im really looking at them). How much do you think they will be affected? Ive never used a broken rod before.  Looking at buying an xtreme and probably a legend tournament.

fishing user avatarlevih725 reply :

I use some broken rods myself and it doesn't seem to effect it to bad

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Good question.

I have a number of rods with replacement tips and they perform very well.

Some are two to three inches shorter and so far, no problems.

Just remember that those extra inches were there because the rod manufacturer's engineers wanted the inches so the rod could absorb the shock of a hoot set and a fight with a large lady.

If the price is right then go forward with the purchase.

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

Trimming any Rod top will slow the action and raise the lower end of the lure weight range. The level to which it will be affected depends on what it was to start with. 3" off a MH or M fast action Rod may leave you with something useable but nothing like it was before.

fishing user avatarOklahoma Mike reply :

The more of the rod tip that's gone, the more the action will be affected. You will still have a serviceable rod, but as already pointed out above, the action will vary from what's stated on the rod.

Not sure where you're buying these from or what you're paying, but you should know that you can buy such rods directly from St. Croix for $30 each. They won't have a warranty obviously.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

Well, if it's missing 3 inches unless it's marked down 90% the only use I could have for is would be as tomato stake.

this or maybe a catfish rod

fishing user avatarjonnyblazex reply :

If its still 8ft long ^

fishing user avatarRichF reply :

It won't perform that well.  But they're St Croixs...you could always pay the replacement fee.  Depending on how much they're discounted, you may get away with paying quite a bit less for a $400 rod.

man i did not know they are 30 each. maybe i should take a trip up to the factory. if only it wasn't 6 hr away

I think ive decided not to get one then. If the action and stuff is much different i might as well get a new rod.

Thanks for the help everyone I appreciate it

fishing user avatarMikeWright reply :

Could I buy them broken on their site?

I'm using a '94 Zebco rod and a ugly Stik for my line up....a little repair on a st Croix would top both of those together

It might be worth a trip up there at some point if you've got a fishing trip planned for up that way. They sell A, B, and C stock rods at the factory. A stock is the retail rods that you can buy off the shelf anywhere. B stocks are rods that come off the line and have "flaws" It's crazy to see what they pull off the line. I've bought a few B stock rods in the past and you can't tell the differenct between them and an A stock. They might have a little dull spot in the pain/clear coat. I've got an extreme that has a few really tiny air bubbles under the clear coat. You don't even notice unless you look really close. Some B stocks might have a guide ever so slightly out of alignment. Then there's the ones you really can't tell what's wrong with them. I bought a LTB last year I held right next to the same A stock rod and I couldn't find anything at all. These B stock rods are usually discounted 50% or more. C stock rods are those that came back to be fixed but they would not be able to return the rod to original action after fixing it. Most of the time it's due to a tip snapping. It still provides a usable rod, but the ratings on the rod are no longer correct. These rods usually get a new tip top put on, and the St. Croix logo scratched off the rod. They price those by series. I believe anything up to the avid is $30 and LTB on up is $50 if I remember correctly. They get picked over pretty quick, but there are some rods that come out that are totally worth it. Although it might not be the original action, it doesn't automatically make them unusable. The only problem with the B and C stock rods is you can't always go there with a specific rod in mind because availability is based on what gets screwed up.

They don't have them listed, as it's more of an in store thing only. You might be able to call and get a B stock rod, but I doubt they'll sell a C stock rod over the phone as none of them have their original length or action so it's more of an in person type thing.

I actually stumbled across my now favorite length for jerkbait, topwater, and skipping rods by breaking 3 inches off the tip of a 6'6" medium power fast action. It was kind of soft for a medium and after I broke it and retiped it I tried it out and it had the perfect power and action for the baits I like to throw. Now I own several rods that length because I really liked it. I wouldn't recommend breaking one on purpose, but if you can get a really good deal, it's worth a shot imo. Just be aware that St Croix rods fish a little heavier than most manufacturers and with 3 inches broke off, it's definitely going to be a power heavier than rated and get into the backbone a lot quicker. Just think of a medium power fast as a medium heavy extra fast and you should be able to get the action and power you are looking for

you can use their gold star replacement plan to get brand new rods for a fee. does not have to be the same rod.

I would be willing to bet that St. Croix keeps track of the serial numbers on the "broken" rods that they sell for this, and doesn't allow people to take this loophole to get themselves a shiny new rod... But I could be wrong.

I would be curious about this too.

fishing user avatarMickD reply :

If you are like I am, I would wonder with almost every cast what the rod would have been like if it were not broken off.  The actions of all will be affected to some degree depending on how much is gone, as others have said.  Life's too short for me to be agonizing over the rods.  I would instead buy one good one rather than a bunch of question marks.

As to those who sound like they are suggesting cheating St. Croix using their return system, shame on you.

doubt it. G Loomis will send you the replacement before you send back the broken rod.

if you want me to test it, i will buy any broken legend elite for $50 and promise to report back on my gold star experience.

how is that cheating? the rod is broken.

from the site:

Ahh..but what if you’re not registered as the original owner of the rod. Or your buddy stepped on your rod, or slammed it in a car door, or worse yet, used it to free a snag. No worries. St. Croix’s Gold Star Plan eliminates the uncertainty of a dubious warranty claim. Here’s what to do.

St Croix scrapes the logo off the returned rod to identify it so it can't be returned under warranty after it was repurchased from the bargain bin. Up at the St. Croix Store in Park Falls, WI, they have a bin with the broken rods that have been returned and repaired. You never know what you might find when you get there. There is a large measuring stick next to the bin so you can see how much shorter the rod is then when new. You can pick up Legends for $50. Locals visit the store frequently and snap up the rods with "only" a couple of inches missing. Every time I've been there, (I'll probably go there next week) picking on the best rods are pretty slim. Many have as much as 12 inches missing. I'm not sure, but I think the Avid series and under are, I think $30 each.  I've never bought one so I'm not positive of the prices.

They have a big selection of "B" stock rods that are marked down about 40%. B stock rods have a cosmetic defect that is generally very hard to spot. Those rods have a 1 year warranty. They carve an "S" for seconds on the reel seat or rod butt to identify the rods with a 1 year warranty.

Most days, they have at least some rods, usually discontinued models, that are brand new "A" stock, full warranty rods that are marked down. I've gotten $100 Mojo Bass rods for $50, $150 Rage rods for $66, and last year, A $200 Avid X for $140. The sale Items change all the time. Sometimes, there are no real deals, sometimes there are. They'll ship the rods to your door as well for $10.

I just realized I repeated almost everything WIGuide already posted. I should read the threads closely.

How is it cheating?  You're serious?  If the rod was broken when purchased and you try to get St Croix to make it good, you are cheating.  Pretty clear to most folks, I'm sure.

fishing user avatarbigfruits reply :

ah - failed to notice the rods were being bought directly from St Croix. carry on!

fishing user avatarOnthePotomac reply :

I have what used to be a 6'6" MH BPS Extreme and 8years ago broke off 3" and figured what the heck, it is an inexpensive rod so I put on a new tip and kept on trucking with it for fishing plastics.  I have landed a whole lot of bass with that thing over the last 8 years and it worked just fine.  I only fun fish for myself.

Seems like it would make the action faster, you are reducing the distance from the tip to the backbone.

fishing user avatarJeff H reply :

I have never felt a broken rod that I would accept as re-purposed for bass use.  If warranty would not take care of it, I'd give or throw it away and get a new one.

There's no static spot on the blank that can be identified as the backbone. When the tip is trimmed it will take more weight to load and will bend deeper into the new length initially which is the definition of action.

If you were fishing a 3/8 oz jig with a trailer before you broke the tip, and continue to fish the same bait with it broken.  What will be the difference in the action now that the tip is shorter?

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

Trimming a blank from either end slows the action. To what degree it's affected depends on all the variables between blanks. The only way to really measure it is with the Common Cents System but you're getting into real Rod building geek territory. Try it out and see what happens.

Not a bad idea, but I kind of like my rods the way they are now (in one piece).  LOL   Thanks for the info.
