Just got first baitcasting reel last week. BPS JM signature.
I like it alot. Didnt take much to get used to. Still need practice, but so far, so good.
I am starting to get a noise though when reeling. It only happens when lure is lifted out of water and putting weight on rod/reel. Its hard to explain the noise except that it sounds like a rubbing. I tried to pinpoint it by ear, but its not working. Is it just the noise that wet line makes going thru the line guide?
Thanks for the help guys. Just trying to possibly head off a problem before it gets worse.
Are you using braid? If so I think your hearing the guides when the braid rubs on them..
It may just be the noise of your line going through the guides but unless I hear it I dont know. If you can can you take a video for sound or compare it to something?
You obviously didn't read the WARNING on the label before using the reel. You have to open the side plate and let George out. George is an anti-theft device who is installed by the manufacturer. The clerk must have forgotten to let him lose after scanning your reel at the counter.

Whaa? :-? What does it look like?
Oh yeah, sorry, 14 lb mono.
will probly be going to braid, but wanted to start out with mono cuz I figured I would go thru a spool pretty quick while practicing casting. going better than I thought tho.
Its probly just the line going thru the guides and Im just being paranoid. You know how it is, new toy and all.

BPS actually uses a "Fred" on their reels. It's kind of a moot point, but I thought I'd let you know.
what do these fred's look like? now im paranoid i might still have mine on
As long as its not a "Jack", those guys are the worst.
Whats a Jack? I feel SOOO dumbb :-X
QuoteAs long as its not a "Jack", those guys are the worst.
I picked up an Extreme at a yard sale for 5 bucks. It NEVER I repeat NEVER would cast right. I popped it open, and there was the Jack. I'm so glad BPS went to Freds, so much easier to get out .
AHHHH!!! where are these "jacks" and stuff! Im going crazy!
The should be between the pins if you are using a centrifugal brake reel. If its magnetic, they will be directly connected to the magnets.
I thought it was behind the spool?
georges are beneath the splurthing bearing, and freds are on top.
jacks should be left to a qualified reel service specialist

You can remove them yourself if you have the right size jack-off.
LMAO, did you just call Gary a jack-off? ;D ;D

A simple comma would completely alter the tone of my post, wouldn't it? ;D ;D
This thread has been successfully hijacked 8-).
Its so wrong. So funny, but so wrong.
The easiest way to get Jack off the reel is to use a Betty!
too funny
/facepalm
In my experience, an anti-theft jack can only be removed by a fred.
Well since my post has been hijacked, I guess I will reply.
I popped off the side cover and there is no anti theft device or a warning on the label. I have no idea what georges, freds, or jacks are, but I realize you guys are just messin with me.
Anyways, I think I will assume that the noise Im hearing is normal and not bad bearings. Like I said there is no screeching, its more of a rub.

LOL LUCKY! you caught on while I was looking all over my reel for these so called "georges freds and jacks". I had no idea my leg was being pulled LOL ;D
kllrbee, now that we've all screwed with you, I'll try to help.
I had a couple of JM reels, and one of them did just what you described. All was fine at first, and then the rubbing noise started.
What happened with mine was the shim washer under the bearing in the brake side plate was dented. I did it by over-tightening the spool tension. Once the dent became too deep, the spool shifted slightly to the brake side of the reel.
I don't know if your reel has the same problem, but it's an easy fixed, once.
Remove the side plate, remove the spool bearing, take out the plastic shim and flip it over. Replace the bearing and side plate, and go fishing.
If this is the problem, don't over-tighten the spool tension. You can get, or make, new shims. If you make your own, they HAVE to be the exact thickness of the original part.
Also, if this is the problem, you may need to use more centrifugal braking, or more magnetic braking, or both. Just don't use too much spool tension.
Cheers,
GK

This is a good starting point. If you have continuing or worsening problems let us know.
X3...
Alright, took off the side plate and no problems with the washer.
After listening real close, the noise is more of an intermittent whine. Its not high pitched or a squeeling, more of a "Whirr", then nothing, "whirr", nothing, you get the point.
I did it with side plate on and off (so no spool tension) and while reeling or letting the line out by dropping the lure. The noise happens in all situations. It doesnt feel like its affecting casting. Everything feels smooth, but this is my first BC so I have nothing to compare it to.
Im gonna take it back to BPS and get a new one. If it happens again, Ill trade in for a different one. Ill get opinions on that when the time comes.
Thanks
