Grrr...hating life right now 2024

fishing user avatarSoFlaBassAddict reply :

So, I started using braid, love it.  Started using a fluoro leader.  Like that as well.  Until I set a hook.  Right know I'm breaking off at my knot left and right.  To the point where I have zero confidence in it at all right now.  I've used the uni to uni.  I've tied it for years in other stuff.  Tried an albright, a J knot,  a normal surgeons knot.  Every one is breaking off right at the knot.  Could this be because I'm using 8lb fluoro?  Or is it that I'm using the Vicious fluoro I was given.  I "was" using that because it's what I had on hand.  It seemed to be holding before with no issues.  Now I'm just busting off.  Have my drag set fairly light as well to allow for the braid.  I mostly use soft plastics and jigs with this rod and reel.  Should I:

a) use larger pound test fluoro

;) change to a different brand

c) both a & b

If B or C, what brand would you recommend?  I've heard good stuff about Seaguar, P-line, etc etc.  Keep in mind this is for leader material only.  So a 200 yd spool should do me for a while.

Are you lubricating the knot well before you cinch it down? The friction of the braid through the fluoro knot could be cutting a nice groove in it, making it weak.

fishing user avatarTBendBassin reply :

try using a blood knot that not has never failed me.. yes i would try using 12 to 15lb seaguar invisx of trilene 100% professional grade those are the two best fluorocarbons

Lubricating it when I'm doing each side of the uni.  Then re-lubricating each uni and the two lines that the knots slide over when the butt against each other.

It has been a while since I've tied a uni to uni.  But I doubt I'm cinching the fluoro too much when I tie the fluoro side of the uni.

Such light test flouro with braid could be a culprit but there could be a few variables.

What brand and lb test braid are you using and how long were you using it on that rod before you started having break offs?

When I started using braids again I had the same problems with breakage on hooksets. At the time I was using 20lb braid (tried different brands) and either 20lb flouro or 25lb mono leader depending on the rod and technique being used. I switched to 30 and 40lb sufix braid, and between trips stripped a few feet of braid off and retied my leader and I have not had a break off since.

A couple things could be happening. First of all, like I said at first the 8lb flouro isn't helping. Flouro, despite stretching as much or more than mono, doesn't rebound after stretching and on a short length of leader tied to much less stretchy braid is going to lose its elasticity very quickly making it more vulnerable to breaking from a sudden jolt (hookset). So with such light flouro to begin with you're not allowing much give in the system to compensate for the force of a hookset. Also, since braid doesn't "nick" like mono does, it's often neglected more so than mono when it should be re-tied. Braid will fray like rope, and look fuzzy near the end, but still runs through your fingers without feeling damaged... but it is damaged and will break more easily from a sudden force (hooksets).

When I switched from 20 to 30 and 40lb braid (sufix) I realized from some reviews that I'd gone from a four carrier braid to six cariers, thus there are more individual strands to make up for damaged ones. Also, by taking a few feet off the end and retying the leader I was taking off the most damaged portion of braid and tying the leader to a stronger point in the braid.

It seems more expensive to cut off braid after every trip, but overall I've saved much more in both lost fish and lost hooks, sinkers, lures, etc.

The short story: Try beefing up your leader a little more, and retie your leader after every trip and on long trips check your line/leader knot often.

What brand braid, and what's the test..?

I use a uni to uni all the time, 55lb braid to 10 to 15 lb fluro, or yozuri coploy..I've had trilene 100% 12lb fluro snap, but not my knots...Which brings me to another question..assuming your tieing the knot right, how many loops/twists are you doing for each side..?

I find that fluro to braid side, 8 loops, braid to fluro, or mono or whatever..I do 6 loops, spit a lot on the knot and slowly chinch it up, then do the same for the other side..when it's time to chinch both knots together, spit on  em again. make sure your knots are clean, and uniform..otherwise cut, and retie.

I have used this knot to throw heavy swimbaits, so throwing much lighter baits, and hooking fish shouldn't cause a knot failure.

One thing I try not to do, is marry 2 lines that are way different in diameters. i.e. 20lb braid, with a 15lb leader..that's kinda like joining a rope and a pice of string together, just a thought.

30lb power pro which is like 10 lb diameter. I figured the 8lb fluoro shouldn't be a large issue with line size between the two. I'll probably pick up some larger pound test fluoro, I should anyways. The peacocks down here are a lot harder on line than the largemouth.

Hammer: I'll have to try doing the loops that way at some point tomorrow when I get home. I thought I was going fairly slow when cinching it. I may need to slow down a bit more. Do you do the whole super glue thing that a lot of guys talk about on the uni-uni connection?

Skinnyh2ofishin: It's definitely not the braid thats breaking. I'm getting back the braided half of the knot. I get a couple of curls of the fluoro back as well. Thats where the knot is breaking. I may need to be a bit more cautious when tying the knots with the 8lb.

TBendBassin: I'd try the blood knot, but I'm horrible at tying it. Even when I was really into fly fishing I could never tie a good blood knot. Same goes for a nail knot. Must be my fat fingers or something.

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

Never used glue, imho, if the knot is tied correctly, there shouldn't be a need for glue, but if a person feels so inclined to use it..

Just to offer a little more info..The guy that told me how to tie the uni, fished saltwater, and usually caught much bigger fish than Bass.

My background is saltwater as well.  Never used fluoro in it at all though.  Most of the knots I had to tie were with Bimini twists for trolling and uni knots with large mono for deep dropping on grouper.  This small line stuff is killing me!

fishing user avatarBig Bait Fishing reply :

8 lb. flouro ain't that strong on hook sets !!! if i were you i would go up to atleast 12 or 15 lb. flouro . that vicsous is pretty hit or miss it seems to me , some times it is really dependable and sometimes it is garbage .....

fishing user avatarGrey Wolf reply :

Why use a leader at all ? Gin clear water ?

fishing user avatarSoFlaBassAddict reply :

It's pretty clear most of the time.  I mean it aint like your looking through a glass of water in the kitchen, but you've got a good 10-15' visibility

fishing user avatar#pat_walker_fishing reply :

man i had the same problem with braid/floro combination.....If im gonna use braid, i gotta use a mono leader for some shock absorbtion....i use floro/floro almost 95% so that remidied that problem.....if i was gonna use that setup i would definitly take my hookset down a couple notches....like a gentle reel and sweep...

fishing user avatar#pat_walker_fishing reply :

ooops i read the post wrong ...thought you were talking about c-rigs

fishing user avatarbackpain... reply :

I am of the belief that a chain is only as strong as the weakest link. With that in mind, I do not ever use a leader with braid. If it is a situation that would require a flouro leader, I use all flouro. I only use braid in conditions where I can use it from reel to hook.

If I were you, I would switch to all flouro in a lake with 10'-15' of visibility. You get plenty of feel in the low strech flouro. Again, some people do very well with braid + leaders. I can't do it.

Is the Albright knot you are using the same as RW's Alberto knot - I have yet to break off at that knot since I switched to it over a year ago.  Also, are you tying it so that the braid is the line that is wrapping around the fluoro (for the Albright)?

2 things:

- try a different brand of fluoro (same weight rating/line diameter) just to see if it does the same; if so, you know it's not your knot tying skills.  Make sure it's a good fluoro (i.e. no Vanish)

- try the Alberto knot (if you are using the Albright and not the Alberto)

x2 !

I had the same deal - broke off way too many times right at the knot and it didn't seem to matter which knot I used. So I switched to Yozuri Hyrid as my leader and haven't had it happen yet this year. Additionally, I have adopted the following rule ~ Unless the line is straight braid (meaning no leader AT ALL) I CAN NOT THUMB THE SPOOL ON THE HOOK SET. This has really helped in reducing break off as well.

Got to be your knots...Salt water fisherman are catching 40+ lbs tuna all day long using braid to floro leaders... I use alberto like R.W.

Actually I found his post about the Alberto last night.  Plan on trying that at some point.  Picked up some Seaguar AbrasX today to try out.  We'll see how that goes.  The 12lb is the same diameter as that 8lb I had before.

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

I use 55lb Samuari Braid w/ 17lb flouro leader when necessary. Albright knot w/ a dab of krazyglue. No problems.

30 lb power pro to 10lb seauguar invisx using uni to uni and never had a problem once.

fishing user avatarSoFlaBassAddict reply :

Problem solved with the new fluoro.  Theres something wrong with the fact that I don't even want to use the line that I got for free.  That stuff was pure trash.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

when was the Vicious purchased?

Last week at some point.

ok thanks.

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

So...which fluro did you wind up getting..?

fishing user avatarSoFlaBassAddict reply :

Seaguar 12lb AbrazX.  Haven't been able to stick a fish on it yet with the cruddy weather we've got here today.  I know I can't break the knot in my hands by jerking the line anymore.  I've got a couple of slices in my fingers from the braid actually.

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

Good choice... ;)

Got bandaids..?  ;D  sorry, I couldn't resist. Hope you stick some big fish.. ;)

Bandaids are for sissies! I'll use my staple gun and some hot glue.  Finish it off with some duct tape.  That stuff works on everything.

You and me both.  I've seen some bass starting to school up around here lately.  Looks like a bunch of them are on the prowl for food again.

fishing user avatarJosh. reply :

Man, I do the same thing you do... and when i saw a 5lber take my line, i set the hook and SNAP! After it happened a few more times i just said screw this... And now im back to my ol Stren floro  ;D
