Line type for senkos on a BC 2024

fishing user avatarCak920 reply :

I am newer to using casting gear. I just started last summer and am really enjoying my casting gear but I have only used it so far for cranks, spinners, topwater, and jigs. I bought a Dobyn Fury 703c casting rod to use for plastics but I’m curious what you guys use for plastics on a bait caster. My other casting rods all have 20lb power pro super 8 slick. I’m mostly gonna be throwing 5” senkos and other worms weightless Texas or wacky rigged. I was gonna put braid on but was told by a friend that braid effects the way a weightless worm sinks so I was considering using mono even though I used braid on my spinning rod for plastics.

fishing user avatarJig Man reply :

I use fluorocarbon line for everything except spinning reels.

What size test do you use for worms?

fishing user avatarLog Catcher reply :

I am using 12 LB test florocarbon on mine. I just bought a spool of Sunline super florocarbon. It sells for about $15.00 a spool.

fishing user avatarbigfruits reply :

i use straight FC on both spinning and casting for senkos and other weightless plastics.

for casting id prob go for 10lb.

fishing user avatarJig Man reply :

12# on bait casters for worms and tubes.

fishing user avatarCak920 reply :

Thanks for the replies. Surprised no ones using braid. I never liked straight floro on my spinning gear because of the memory but I haven’t tried it on my casting yet. Also only tried 1 brand of floro Don’t recall the brand but it was a cheaper one. I’ll have to try a better brand on my new setup.

Same here. Mono.

fishing user avatarYudo1 reply :

I use 12lb sniper. I believe the sinking quality of fluoro is optimal for weightless senko action.

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

I can't see braids neutral buoyancy having an adverse affect on a senkos action. I see the logic in thinking the Fluoros stiffness reduces slack making strike detection easier but I like the manageability and sensitivity of braid.

fishing user avatarCroakHunter reply :

I like 30lb braid or 12lb fluoro or copolymer. I'm not too picky when it comes to senkos because they usually hold onto them for awhile so super high end line isn't necessary for me in the fishing I do

fishing user avatarFishin Dad reply :

I have been using braid (15 or 20 lb.)for weightless senko's and it has worked great.   I am going to try Fluoro just to do a comparison.   Love that braid lasts for years and it so manageable.   I hope to see if fluoros density and slack line performance have any benefits over braid.

fishing user avatarTywithay reply :

I use 15lb Abrazx. I like to use mono as well, but found I wasn't getting as good of penetration due to the extra stretch in the line.

fishing user avatarpuddlepuncher reply :

I'm going to be the first to embarrass himself an admit to using 50 lb braid for weightless senkos.  Started last year and did not notice any negative results, in very clear water too.  If anything I feel like I improved my hook up ratio as I felt every tick when the fish inhaled it if it was on the bottom, not to mention line watching when watching them sink in deeper water.  Made the switch last year and haven't looked back.

fishing user avatarNYWayfarer reply :

I use fluorocarbon hybrid line (Kastking Fluorokote, P-Line Fluoroclear) 12# line for most of my baitcasters. I fish in extremely clear water and it seems to be the best line for the job when it comes to weightless Senkos type baits.

I do have one high speed baitcaster that I run 30# braid on for pitching plastics around cover. I don't do weightless plastics with that on though.

fishing user avatarOnthePotomac reply :

Invizx 15lb flouro (.013) on all my baitcasters for all plastcs and on my fishing partners spinning reel (my daughter) simply 8lb mono and she never loses a fish.  Go figure.

fishing user avatarTOXIC reply :

I do not throw a Senko on a Baitcaster......unless it is the trailer on a c-rig.  That's not to say I don't throw other plastics on a baitcaster, I do.  Just not a weightless Senko.  Don't get me wrong. I am not criticizing anyone who does but having been sponsored by Yamamoto for the last 20 years, giving seminars and demonstrations, writing articles and fishing them heavily when I was guiding, I have developed what I feel has produced the most fish for me in most situations.  That being said, there is one thing that ALWAYS holds true......There is no wrong way to rig a Senko.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

The biggest issue with using a baitcaster is that sooner or later the Senko is

going to "take flight". The resulting backlash can be amazing! I fish weightless

plastics exclusively on spinning tackle.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I also fish weightless Senkos on spinning gear. 8lb AbrasX is what I'm throwing them on right now.

fishing user avatarFishDewd reply :

I'll throw senkos on casting or spinning gear, depending on what I want to do. Braid to a long fluorocarbon leader for me on casters. I don't like using the polymers for a main line on casting gear. Spinning I like to use a co-polymer mainline with a fluoro leader.

fishing user avatarBoomstick reply :

If it's just senkos, 12lbs is great. I usually run 15-20lb line or 30-4lb braid on the rod I fish soft plastics with as I fish other things like jigs on the same rod.

Fluorocarbon is preferred for it's sink, but if you don't like fluorocarbon feel free to use monofilament or copolymer lie.

So true....so very true! ????

fishing user avatarWurming67 reply :

Here you go,I'm trying it with braid this weekend after seeing this.

fishing user avatarFurther North reply :

30# braid, High visibility (I use Suffix 832 in Chartreuse), tied to a fluoro leader, or a hybrid leader around 12# to 8#.

Works a bazillion times a year in crystal clear, NW WI and Canadian Shield lakes.

Anyone who says it doesn't work is full of it, in my fishery.  YMMV, and all of the other standard disclaimers.

fishing user avatarLxVE Bassin reply :

40# braid with a 12 or 15# flouro leader. Don’t plan on changing it.

fishing user avatarGraham reply :

Braid with a 12# floro leader for me.

fishing user avatarNHBull reply :

20 lb brai on a caster with 8 lb FC for wacky

12 lb for trig

fishing user avatarbunz559 reply :

10lb or 12lb flouro seems to work great for me. Sunline Sniper or PLine Tactical have been pretty good to me, although they're a bit pricey. I'm leaning more towards the Pline Tactical as I've noticed some abrasion issues with the Sunline Sniper.

fishing user avatarbasseditor reply :

How big are the fish in your area? I use 15# Invisix for 5” and 20# for 6” Senkos. That way I can fish grass or wood or open water. They’re fished on Kistler 7’6” ZBones. 3LMH open water or 5H around cover for the 5/6 inch baits. I don’t have to worry when I hook a 7-10 pounder.
