Bass Pro Shops Extreme baitcast reel 2024

Well, I hope nobody views this as spam, cause I have nothing to gain at all by posting this. I just want to let you all know what a good reel is to use by my own personal experience, having bought one myself.
It's a Bass Pro Shops Extreme baitcast reel. I bought one of the 5 bearing models early last year as they were clearancing them out to make way for the new 7 bearing models that replaced them.
I've had it for over a year now and it's been good so far, but I was really impressed with mine the other day when dad and I went fishing and we had 30 MPH winds, sometimes more, the whole time we were there.
I started out using a 12 year old Quantum EX250 with a magnetic brake, casting a Bandit model 100 crankbait, maybe 1/4 or 5/16 ounce?? It was hard to cast a crankbait in that wind we were having, and you can totally forget it if you have to cast right into the wind. I had backlash after backlash and the final straw came when I casted it out, backlashed it yet again, and a bass hit the bait as soon as it hit the water. I couldn't set the hook, or even fight the fish, so I lost it due to fighting with the line instead.
I knew I had that Extreme in the bed of the truck on another rod that I was not using at the time. I went and got it, thinking it's got to be better cause it's so much nicer overall. Boy was I ever right. That inertia brake they have is amazing!!! I was able to cast that little lightweight crankbait without a single backlash the rest of the day. Even STRAIGHT INTO the wind, with it blowing hard. I was hitting 30 to maybe 60 foot casts with it too, the wind was having no effect on the bait except maybe messing up my aim just a teeny bit, but otherwise it was a pure pleasure to use when fishing in the wind. Unfortunately though, I was never able to raise another strike in the couple of hours we stayed there after I swapped reels. 
But I'll know next time to start out using that Extreme.
So if you haven't checked into the reels they have with the inertia brakes, you probably will want to now, my experience has been awesome with it, so much so that I'm about to replace the Quantum with another Extreme, and then get at least one more for another rod I have. Don't really need 3, but I just want it is all.

I have said it many times on here. The Extreme reels are the best value around. They perform with the big boys and are as durable as any reel I have ever used. I have used mine on 10 pound bass, 15 pound hybrids, 20 pound redfish and numerous tournaments. NEVER a single problem with any of the half dozen I own.
I used to be a Shimano guy (and still somewhat am) but I think the Extreme reels are everybit as good as the citicas and curados I used to buy.

Hmm...
I doesn't take much to move up from Quantum. I'm glad you like the Extreme, but I have never heard anything good about those reels. My friends at Bass Pro won't even fish with them for free...

I'm totally agreeing with this. My brother-in-law has 4 of the Shimano Curado D reels, paid nearly $200 for each of them, and I'd put this Extreme up against any one of them. It's just so smooth and I love everything about it. And I have nothing against Shimano but I can't see myself paying that much for a reel. Especially not when I can have 3 of these Extremes at the current price for less than he paid for one Curado. When I first saw the Extreme in the catalog, I knew it would be good from what all it said about it, and the price seemed too good for a reel of that quality. But I'm a believer now.
And I also heard bad things about them, even read a lot of bad reviews on Bass Pro's website about them, but I attribute a lot of that to misuse of the reel, or simply some bad stock, cause after all, it's a product that is mass produced and in any product like that you will occasionally get some duds. I guess mine was a good one, I love it. No problems so far. Knock on wood.
I'm definitely gonna get more of these though. Can't make up my mind if I want the flippin' switch or not though. I don't pitch and flip, no call for it on the water I fish most of the time, not that I could do it anyway, I've tried and I'm either not understanding how to do it correctly, doing it wrong, or just can't master it. I use the flippin' switch I have now on the Quantum just to make casts with spinnerbaits or other lures and have the reel instantly engage to catch bass that strike when the lure impacts the water, and that's all I use it for.

Yeah, I know!!!! Can't believe they're so cheap. I hope the sale lasts a while cause I don't have the money at the moment to get one. Too many other things to buy......LIKE GASOLINE. It's $4 per gallon here!!! My truck gets 13 MPG. > 350 V-8.

I have a Extreme I purchased about 5 years ago paired up with a 6'6" Medium BPS Tournament Stick (a discontinued green blank model) that I use for light crankbaits and topwaters. It has never given me any problems in all the years I've used it. I let my dad use it when he comes to visit since it's so easy to cast and he's not as experienced throwing a baitcaster, and he casts all day with hardly a backlash. I think they're great reels for the money (especially on sale), though I have others (Curado, Quantum Code, Energy, and Accurist) that I use more often.

I bought an Extreme baitcasting combo last year and for the price I have nothing but good to say about it. My second extreme came in the mail last week and I plan on getting at least one more. They definately don't compare to my Revo SX, but at the price point that is not a fair comparision. I would put them against a silvermax anyday though

I probably won't ever fish with reels that cost so much because they cost so much.......but they say ignorance is bliss so if I don't know how much better those reels are than my Extreme then I'll be happy using it. I can't imagine one any better than the Extreme though. For me, I've reached the top with this line of reels. Now if they will JUST LEAVE IT ALONE instead of redoing the whole line or discontinuing some or all of them FOR A FEW YEARS at least, then I'll be happy. ;D

Try a more expensive reel out in a store, then you won't need to imagine a better reel, you can feel one. I don't think it's fair to discount the benefits of a more expensive reel without even trying them. If you haven't tried them, you can't assess the differences fairly. You can't know the benefit of fishing with a reel with a better drag system, lighter weight, more durability, and more power unless you actually use one...
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for finding something that you like without spending more than you want to, but go test out a more expensive reel at the store, then you'll know what the possibilities are.

Well, it's not that I haven't ever looked at more expensive reels in the stores. Even the Curado at Bass Pro Shops and local tackle shops also. But it's hard to tell enough difference by just....um......"dry cranking??" them in the store cause a lot of them feel pretty slick that way. No real way to test the drag or power of them either if there's no line on them. I think I'd have to actually buy one and use it to know, and maybe return it if I didn't like it, which would be a lot of hassle to find out. But looking at them at the counter there, I just couldn't see enough difference to be worth the extra money anyway so I just never have had one to try.

Well, I'll let you know what I have found then. There is a tremendous difference between almost all low end and high end reels.

I own 2 Extreme reels and I love them never had any trouble.I dont know how much drag power they have and I dont care ,never had trouble landing a fish . I bought a citica a BPS about 5 weeks ago and at 50 dollars more Im not impressed . There rods are awsome to . at my job i fish with loomis greenwaters and these rods are just a sensitive . In my opinion best value on the market.

More money won't buy you a better drag. I have found that any naysayers change there mind about these reels after they use them. My best fishing buddy, whom I spend nearly every weekend with, thought I was an idiot when I started buying the extreme reels. He has 16 Loomis rods, half are paired with Chronarchs and the other with curados.
I made him fish a morning with one of the extreme reels and after that he has since bought 4 of them. He likes them as much as his curados but certainly not the Chronarchs.
I find that most people that say they are not good have only "heard" that.

I think it would be safe to say that for well over 50 to 60 percent of bass fisherman, the Extreme reel or rod for that matter would have more than enough quality, smoothness, cool features, etc.. That's not to say that there isn't a difference, and a noticeable one at that between it and a Shimano Curado or Garcia Premier. But I think it takes someone who puts in an above average amount of time on the water fishing, and someone who thinks and obsesses and tortures himself over our sport an above average amount of the time to justify buying reels and rods from $200 - $700. But for the average basser, I would assume arund $100 bucks give or take seems to be the average spent on a rod or a reel. Just my opinion though, I could be wrong

I have one,they are worth the money you pay for them.It's a great deal and one of the better reels in the $50 price range when they go on sale.

I have an Extreme reel in the smaller size. Second year with it. Good reel and very smooth. I just recently purchased my son a Citica and he says he likes my Extreme just as much as the Citica. I haven't used the Citica much so I can't really compare them.

Just to be nit-picky, since the Forum is so slow this morning...
I notice a lot of the combinations at the bigger retailers (BPS, Cabela's, etc.) seem to target something around $150 for their "higher-end" sale items. The difference in equipment between the $100 and $150 price breaks is fairly significant.
So you may be right about the $100 pricing point, but if guys can stretch to the next level, I really think it's worth the money. After that, it's hard to argue against the law of "diminishing returns".

I agree but for some reason the Extreme reels just seem way better to me than anything else in its price range.
For example, I bought 2 Quantum Codes basically for no other reason except to give quantum another try.. These are $70 reels.....and that is exactly how they feel. These reels cast an average distance, small and comfortable, BUT they just don't feel like an upper end reel. The smoothness just isn't there. The Code is worth the money I paid for them but no more. They do have some things I really like about them and I have fished with them a lot.
The Extreme reels are the only reels in that price range that feel like a $200 reel. Pick one up and give the handle a twirl....it spins forever. The drag has proven itself to me, they will cast as far as any reel I have thrown. And thats a lot!!!! I bet I had at one point over 20 rod and reels. I have scaled down to half that bc all my stuff was stolen.
Anyway, to each his own. I just feel like I got lucky with these reels.

I have to agree the Bass Pro Extreme Reels are bulletproof. I have had one for the last 6 years probably and have never had any problems with it. Right now I have 5 Extreme Baitcast reels and have never had a problem with any of them. They are smooth and reliable. I trust they are going to work everytime I go fishing. There is one other reel in the price range that I think is almost as good of a deal. The Abu Garcia Silver Max and Pro Max. I bought a reconditioned Silver Max from ffo-tackle.com for like $30, and I think it is well worth the full retail price. I honestly don't think I would ever pay more than $100 for a just a reel. Not because I can't afford but because they aren't worth it. I have fished upper end shimano and quantum reels and I'm just not impressed that they are worth that much more.

It's a backlash or a birds nest if we do it, and a "Professional Overrun" if RoadWarrior does it, hehehe ;D I also think it depends on what your using to do it. A 30 dollar shakespeare baitcaster backlashes. A 400 dollar Shimano professionally overruns!!

I own 4 of the Extreme reels. I have one from 5 years ago to the newest one. These are "one" of the smoothest and best bang for the buck in the $100.00 range. There are other options, the Johnny Morris that is only offered in stores is a 10 bearing and ultra smooth reel and it sells for $99.00.......Look for them or ask the guy at the reel counter.
