I'm looking for a new crankbait setup. Price isn't a huge issue, but I don't want to spend a lifetime's salary on it. Any suggestions?
Reel:
Daiwa Sol
Rod:
Compre Crankbait Cast Rod 7' Medium, CPC-C70MB
Falcon LowRider XG Cast 7' Medium, LFC-4-17
the Avid gets a lot of talk as far as cranking goes but i have never used one.
the avid 70mhm or the cbr845 make excellent all-around crank rods.
matched with a curado e5, neither would break the bank.
I would go with a higher end 5 to 1 ratio cranking reel. Buy what ever brand you have confidence in, they all offer a crankbait model, i.e., Revo, Curado, Zillion and so on. At least consider a glass or dedicated crankbait model rod in what ever length you prefer, i.e., 6-6 or 7 foot. If you choose an all graphite, look for a slower action. You're fishing smaller treble hooked lures and the slower action has some " forgiveness" to it and will help with hook ups and staying hooked up. There's a bunch of manufactures who have dedicated crankbait rods. Loomis, St Croix, Falcon, Dobyns, Lamiglas and Quantum are just a few. This set up category is huge for personal preference in brands. Just look for low ratio, softer action and quality construction and performance. You should be able to get a great set up for $270.00 to $450.00. Good luck !
For the rod, should I mainly be looking for a 7' Medium?
are you wanting to deep crank or throw shallow cranks and square bills?
I'll be throwing more shallow cranks with it, I don't deep crank much.
Dobyns Champion series 704 CB Glass best crankbait rod ever made.
Reel: 5.0-1 Ardent XS 1000
Rod: St. Croix Avid Cranking Rod
I LOVE this setup for cranking, and all of the above are made in the USA 8-)
Most of the guys here are shimano/abu/ or diawa guys. Not to many Ardent, so I will probobly be the only one who suggests this combo.
Shallow and/or medium weight:
St. Croix Avid AVC70MM/ Curado 200E7
Deep:
Lamiglas SR705R/ CTE200GT
8-)
Love my Dobyns 705CB Glass matched with a Shimano Chronarch 50MG.
If I am reading correctly. Does my 6' 6" Vendetta match up well with what I am looking for?
QuoteShallow and/or medium weight:St. Croix Avid AVC70MM/ Curado 200E7

Do I want the Curado 200E7 or the 200E5? I thought I would need to slower gear ratio?

For shallow cranks, the vendetta would do ok. For deeper baits, a longer, more powerful rod would do you good. I personally use a 6'10" MH Carrot Stix Gold with a Sol for anything under 10'. After that I go to my 7'MH Lucky Craft with a Curado 200e5.
My setup:
Shimano Compre Cranking Rod 7' M
Shimano Curado 201dpv 5.0:1 ratio
Yo-Zuri Hybrid line 12lbs test.
90% of my cranking is in 6' or less and this setup just kills.

I can't speak from personal experience, only from the researching I've been doing the past 4 months. It seems to me that everybody makes a good cranking rod, usually in several model lines (thus price points).
Might want to try one of these in a medium action if you want to keep the budget way down. I'd say from reading this review that a MH might be a bit too much unless you can take it easy on the hook set.

I would love to try a Dobyns and Cara T7, and Phenix, etc., etc., but money is tight. I have a tendency to go for the underdog. I got an excellent price on one of these used, except mine is a MH model.

Doesn't seem to be very popular, but I really like it so far. Just wish I could catch a fish on it!!! Course that's my problem, not the rod's. ;D I've had a Fuego and currently have a Zillion on it. Both cast lures extremely well IMO. Of course, that doesn't count for much at this point.
Another reasonable option that got a great review.

If you haven't done so already, a good starting point is to read some of these reviews.

You'll see that the Powell 683C (among others) also got a great review. Your biggest problem is going to be narrowing the field to 2-3 choices. ;D ;D
Daiwa sol on a loomis cbr843

So should I be looking to just put a slower reel on it, and find another technique specific rod to pair my Citica with?
Your Citica will be fine. Thats what I use on my St Croix Premier, 6'6" Med/Mod crankbait (graphite) rod. Will throw a Minus 1 a mile.
Well, I got that rod as a general baitcaster to use, didn't know that it would end up being my crankbait rod until now.
Guess I should look for another technique specific setup, as I told myself last week that I was going to get another one.
i'm very happy with my Phenix X-10. very light, casts great. i've got a curado e-5 on it right now. i don't think you need the slower speed reel for anything other than deep crankin though. have fun lookin at all those rods.
Quotei don't think you need the slower speed reel for anything other than deep crankin though.
i like 6:1 for small to mid size cranks. 7:1 is fine for shallow/small cranks, IMO.

I was wondering, because I have heard folks say that you need a 5:1?
I have a St. Croix PGC70MMF with an Ardent XS1000.
I freakin' love it.
I like the 5:1 for all cranks. But you could use whatever ratio you want you just have to slow down the retrieve. A good size rod is 7' it adds distance to your cast compared to 6'or 6'-6", this is helpful when your casting light cranks like griffons. Medium is a good power. I use a kistler mag/ crank rattle and roll and curado E5
every crank thred i feel like a broken record. lol.
youre not really looking to slow your retrieve with a lower gear ratio reel when DEEP cranking. youre looking to reel that 3/4oz crank through 19ft of water all day without youre arm falling off. the resistance requires more torque.
just like youre car shifting down to go up a hill. same thing.
if youre looking to throw mid to shallow cranks youll do fine with youre citica. actually itll do fine for deep cranking too if you dont mind wearing yourself out. its just easier and more comfortable to use a lower ratio to deep crank.
*sigh*
Thanks for the suggestions.
If I went with a whole new rod and reel, what would be a good technique to use with my current setup?

How has the Kistler Mag/CRR worked for you?
Dude the Kistler Mag rod is the shizit teamed up with Revo Premier. My favorite set up.
