Braid Line Snapping 2024

fishing user avatarKyle Mahaffey reply :

Twice today my braid line snap on my spinning rig. Once was a little above the bale and the second time it snapped half way bwtween the first and second rod eyelid. What could cause this.

fishing user avatarKyle Mahaffey reply :

I had both times had rat'l traps on them. Could it be the hook slicing them?

fishing user avatarMrSwimJig reply :

Check your guides first and make sure they are smooth.

fishing user avatarKyle Mahaffey reply :

I did and it feels fine to me

fishing user avatarJig Man reply :

What kind of braid?  How old is it?  What # test?  Are you fishing around wood or rocks?

I fish with a guy who uses nothing but braid.  He has been having trouble with his lately.  He made a big cast with an A rig this spring and halfway from the bait to the reel his broke and the rig sailed off like an airplane.

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

You're casting too hard. Wind knot is forming and "POP" there it goes. Happens to a friend of mine that refuses to listen and I laugh every time now.

fishing user avatarKyle Mahaffey reply :

Fireline 12# and around laydowns. And my eyelids are good

fishing user avatarKyle Mahaffey reply :

But nothing around while casting.

fishing user avataraquaholic reply :

how old is the braid? My braid was breaking on one of my spinning setups this year but it was probably 4 years old

fishing user avatarThe Commodore reply :

I have had old braid snap.  The Braid was on the reel and never used for probably 4 years.

fishing user avatarKyle Mahaffey reply :

Like February of this year.

fishing user avatarKyle Mahaffey reply :

I might have snap casted once but that might cause wind knots but not breakage.

I've done this a couple of times and its usually with a spinner bait or a lure that catches alot of wind.

12# braid is light I have never used braid that small and light. I would assume it would take much of a nick to really weaken the line alot.

Especially Fireline which isn't a very good braid. I didn't want to really bring it up because I don't want this to turn into a brand bashing contest, but to Kyle the original poster....get a different braid. Fireline braids are a thing of the past and they don't compete in any margin with modern day braids.

My friend that I mentioned uses too light action of a rod, too thin of diameter braid, and too heavy of baits (usually a spinnerbait). And every now and then I hear "SNAP" and his lure is in orbit only to plummet to the depths.

So make sure your lure, rod, line are all appropriate for the application. Cast on the side of your body and not over your head or shoulder if that is what you're doing.

fishing user avatarKyle Mahaffey reply :

I was overhand casting. And my rod and reel is set up for such a light line. It's a bad habit of mine because of bank fishing. And trying to get it out longer

fishing user avatarderekxec reply :

this is the thing with braided line it is very strong if pulled but say you get a knot during a cast and the knot grabs a guide and makes a quick snap of the line its easier to break...and even more so with the crappier braids like firewire lol

I'm seriously asking this as nice as I can, I'm not trying to start anything. What are you referring to when you say "eyelids"?

fishing user avatarderekxec reply :

he means guides

fishing user avatardodgeguy reply :

original fireline is fused and is not a braid. fireline braid is one of the best braids made.i have used braid of all brands since the eaarly 90's and have never had it snap on a cast.something is severely wrong for this to happen.is the line old or worn ?

Well I thought he may have been talking about the ceramic inserts in the guides but I just wanted to make sure. I'd never heard them referred to as "eyelids" before.

fishing user avatarKyle Mahaffey reply :

Yea sorry had a brain fart.

fishing user avatarMr_Scrogg reply :

Are there Zebra Mussels in the water you fish? Those things can shred braid. Slightest little nick and a lighter braid will snap like sewing thread.

Not a problem.

I've never had braid break during a cast myself, I've seen a couple of buddies break off while using casting gear before. They would make really hard casts get a backlash and snap there goes their bait off into the blue yonder. I've experienced really bad wind knots while using braid with an older spinning reel that I was able to untangle that I feel later contributed to the line breaking on a hard hookset. If you've had bad wing knots that may help explain the breakage issues but it's still pretty thin.

If you've already checked your guides and found them to be defect free then I'm out of ideas to try and explain your problem. Whatever it turns out to be I hope you get it sorted out soon, good luck to you.

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

I know you said your guide inserts are good and I assume this is how you checked them but it never hurts to repeat it for anyone else who might read this. Get Q-tips and run them all the way around the guide inserts, if there are any cracks the Q-tip will leave strands of cotton behind. If there are any cracks, it can wreak havoc on line, especially thin braid.

You might also try pulling off 10yds or so of line in case it got nicked up from fishing or from wind knots.

fishing user avatarKyle Mahaffey reply :

Only thing I can do is laugh. I took the rod out and haven't had any problems with it yesterday. But I didn't try to cast a mile.

I think you solved your problem. Don't be Hercules. A little finesse will do you just fine.
fishing user avatarKyle Mahaffey reply :

It's hard to do that when you stand on a dock and you are just a tad shy of the old dock on the other side. So you try to muscle your way to it. Lesson learn
