Best Braid 2024

fishing user avatarGitRDoneIke23 reply :

What do you consider to be the Best Braided line out there? I know Fireline isn't braid, but it's close enough!

BTW. You can vote for more than 1. Please keep it under 3. Thanx

:(

fishing user avatarfooman reply :

I have always used Spiderwire braid on my baitcasters and Fireline on my spin reels..

But after hearing everyones take on Power Pro and Suffix braid I think I will be trying them this year..

I just bought some Cabelas Ripcord to try on my spinning reels..

Did try Stren Braid last year and it worked pretty good

fishing user avatarbugman reply :

Stren Superbraid is round and keeps it's shape and color.  I like the 50# & 65# for froggs and flipping.

fishing user avatarBranuss04 reply :

I'm not a big fan of the "Waxy" feeling of some braids. Sufix doesn't feel as bad as most other braids.  It's expensive at first, but if you think about it, $18 will last me all season.  Pretty cheap if you look at it in the long run.

fishing user avatarThe Next KVD reply :

Power Pro. Best in castability and strength!

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

PowerPro is still my favorite.  I have tried Suffix, great line, but I still think PowerPro is better.  It seemed to lose its' color faster and frey just a little more.  I thought that the PowerPro also casted further as well.  As far as which one is stronger per and has better knot strenght, I would say that they are about equal with a little advantage going to Suffix.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

PowerPro may not be the best braid, but it's certainly my favorite braid.

Truthfully, as long as it's braid and not monofilament (nylon, copolymer or fluoro),

I'll be a happy camper dance.gifroflmao.gif

fishing user avatarSimonSays reply :

I agree with RoLo, I loooove my braid...with that said, i've used suffix, powerpro and stren...I liked them all...I want to give Berkley Big game Braid a try but they only sell them in 300yrd spools at my local tackle store at $25 a pop...on par with the BPS braid which I haven't tried yet either....

fishing user avatarsurfer reply :

Samurai that I cant afford then suffix that I can and do.

fishing user avatardodgeguy reply :

a friend of mine treid samurai and said it was to soft and had no abrasion resistance.i don't know because i can't afford it.i know it is super smooth.i voted for suffix.i think all around it is the best.

fishing user avatarSpringCantComeSoonEnough reply :

I'll be trying Calcutta Ultra Braid this year. From what I've been reading, it is made of the same stuff that Power Pro is made from, and possibly manufactured by the same people. (It is Spectra fiber from what I've read, but only 50-50 on being made by the same people)

Since I haven't tried it yet, I won't vote until I see how it fares with a few frogs and some jigs.

fishing user avatarsenile1 reply :

Sufix Performance Braid is the cat's meow for me.

fishing user avatarmichbass reply :

Sufix Braid here. Only issue seems to fade real quick. Don't use a lot of braid though but when I do it Sufix..  :(

fishing user avatarharshman reply :

Suffix is the only braid I will ever use. I even have had it on a few reels two years now and it looks just as good as the day I put it on, and I fish somewhere 3-4 times a week.

Harshman

fishing user avatarsnyper77 reply :

I fished Fireline for years. It faded and frayed badly. Also, it seemed to 'dig' down into the inner layers of line on the spool, causing it to 'snag' during a cast and backlash. I loved the feeling of braid and hated to have to give it up, so I tried Stren Super Braid. I love it. Stren Superbraid casts great and is ultra sensitive. I am having a few problems though. One, the line floats and doesn't allow a weightless worm or fluke to fall as much as I like. Also, when using braid on a spinnerbait or crankbait, it feels like it will rattle your hands off! It's so sensitive! The wobble of the willow leaf blades or a bandit crankbait will rattle your teeth while using braid. I don't mind feeling all the little 'bumps' when I fish a worm or pig-n-jig, but not baits that put off constant vibrations. I'm not sure which line would be best for weightless worms, spinnerbaits, and cranks.

fishing user avatarBallpark Frank reply :

I used to be a Berkley only guy. I have used all the Trilene lines for years, with Big Game being my favorite. I decided to try braid and settled on Fireline(smoke), I hated it. First off, it turned everything black as the finish wears off. My hands and the cork on my rod were covered in the residue. I thought OK, I'll wait a few days. After 4 solid days of fishing it, it still turned everything black. The line also frayed easily when cutting. I decided to try another brand, Suffix, which was recommended by a friend. Well, that's the only braid I have used for the past year(same line on reel) and am very happy with it. The Fireline was also very noisy(which braid is anyway), but the Suffix is a lot quieter going through the guides. The biggest plus, the finish/coating on the Suffix does not turn everything colors.

fishing user avatarjrhennecke reply :

I like the Gorilla Braid.  Tried Fireline and really didn't like it.

fishing user avataralabamajon56 reply :

sufix braid or power pro

fishing user avatarInfidel. reply :

P-Line Braid (The only line I like from that company)

fishing user avatarsnyper77 reply :

I would like to know if each of you have used Stren SuperBraid. If your answer is "yes", then please tell me why you prefer Suffix or PowerPro instead of Stren SuperBraid. Thanks!

Snyper,  I believe the Stren and Power Pro are very comparable to eachother.  I use both and think they are on par with eachother.  They both lose their color, like all Spectra braids that I have used.  I did hear that the Shakespear Ugly Braid keeps it's color a bit better, have not tried it yet though.  He is a tip for you braid users.  Obviously braid lasts a long time, but even when it starts to wear out, simply pull the braid off your reel, making sure to keep it is a straight line.  Then retie the the opposite end to your spool.  Wallah!  New line.  LOL.  I know, I probably just pointed out the obvious, but some of "us" need that.  LOL.  I am including myself in the "us".

fishing user avatarsnyper77 reply :

Wow, never thought about that! Remove old braid and restring it in reverse order! My only problem is....I use mono as filler deep down on my spool, and fill it about 1/2 with mono. Then I tie braid to it, and fill up the rest of the spool. This allows me to use one $14 spool of braid for 3 reels! :(

I spool half way also and reverse my braid.

I had an outfit that I had spooled with Spiderwire that I used for years without any problems except for faiding and now I see they recommend you change your braid every 2-3 years.

I'll keep mine on until I start having problems with it.

Wow, really?  Gorilla Braid?  I bought a spool of it a while ago, and the stuff is like rope.  Worst stuff I've ever even seen.  I made a few casts, put that rod down for the rest of the day and unspooled it when I got home.  I now use it for things that require rope.  It's so heavy that when I was casting (spinning reel), the line was coming off the spool and slapping the rod audibly.

Anyway, I would like to hear the opinions of people who have used Power Pro AND Sufix to see what you think.  Once I found Power Pro, I haven't even considered using anything else, and it seems the same for those who use Sufix.  For those who have used both (extensively), what's your opinion?  These two brands seem to be the most popular.

fishing user avatarWayne P. reply :

Snyper77, I have used Suffix and Power Pro and several others. I prefer Stren Super Braid because the finish is smoother and it casts better. The only line I have found that has a slicker finish is Spiderwire Invisibraid, but it's too slick and digs into the spool too much when landing a fish-that is still an on-going test.

I use the Stren Super Braid 20# or 30# for weightless worms rigged wacky style-I keep 5 rods rigged just for that purpose. My solution is to add a 3'-4' leader of fluorocarbon line in 20# to make the braid sink. That is my set-up for depths down to about 5'. I just add some light weight to the worm to fish deeper.

fishing user avatarWayne P. reply :

A recommendation for Fireline: with it's negative traits of fraying and color loss, it's good quality is when used on closed face spinning reels. The relative stiffness of the line seems to preform the best in that application. I have several set-ups for novice anglers rigged with Fireline-mostly in the 14#.

fishing user avatarGrey Wolf reply :

I guess I'm not as particular as a lot of fishermen are but I'll buy Stren superbraid , Suffix braid , and Power Pro when ever I get a good deal on them. I think all three lines are good quality.

fishing user avatarJoel W reply :

Been using Power Pro for years and really love the stuff.  I usually get two years out of a spool before changing it.  As I'm starting to change a few reels this off season, I'm moving up to Sufix Braid as I've heard only good things about it. For one thing it's a 6 strand braid while Power Pro is made out of 4 strands. Will see which one I like better over the course of the season.

fishing user avatarHesterIsGod reply :

Spiderwire stealth

fishing user avatarHesterIsGod reply :

I also usually get 2 years out of each spool of spiderwire.

fishing user avatarPencil Pusher reply :

Another vote for Gorilla braid. I also have reels spooled with Spider Wire, Fireline and one with power Pro. The only one I really don't like is the Power Pro.

I use both

I don't fish anywhere near as much as you do. My Sufix turned a very light olive color after just a few uses. I'm using 40#. Which lb. test are you using? Maybe it makes a difference although I don't see how that could be possible.

I bought a 6' MH Lightning on close out at my local Wal-mart and a Daiwa Procaster when TW was closing them out for my grandson. I spooled it with 12 lb. Big Game mono. Reel was cleaned only. First time using it I thought something was wrong with the reel. Was throwing a 1/2 oz. spinnerbait. Then I realized what I was feeling was the 'thumps' of the blades. Literally felt like the reel was moving in my hand. Slowed the retrieve way done and it smoothed right out. If braid is worse, then I can see why you might need to visit your dentist after a day of throwing a spinnerbait with braid. :)

fishing user avatargonebassin reply :

Went and did some fun fishing recently and was fishing a lake with a lot of Largemouth. I had a spool of spiderwire and put it on a spinning reel but did not like it. I mainly use powerpro but wanted to try it something different. My question is, Has anyone tried much of the Seagar Kanzen braid, and if so, how would you compare it it to some of the other braids out there on the market. Also looked at the Daiwa Samarui braid and am curios to some of your responses.

And some say it's outdated.........I say it all fishes pretty much the same. I mostly fish PP, sometimes I use Fins. I may be a little particular to a certain rod or reel, but when it comes to lines, they all work fine for me, braid or otherwise.

fishing user avatar0119 reply :

Even if you discount all the counterfeit PP that came in from china a few years back, theirs still too many experienced people who have had mid line breaks with PP. With so many lines with fresh technology costly just a couple dollars more, why use it.

For those posting on Stren Super Braid, can I ask where your finding it? It was my favorite Braid until Stren discontinued making it.

They're finding it in 2008. This is an old, recently revived thread. Check the dates on the posts prior to this page.
