New Rod For 3/16-1/4 T-Rigs 2024

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Hello long time reader, first time poster. I'm looking for a new rod for my Texas rigs, my old faithful veritas exploded on a hookset Saturday, I'm looking to upgrade to a higher end rod for this since this is what I fish 90% of the time. It will be used for mostly pitching and sometimes long casting bank lines. Will be 3/16-1/4 tungsten 100% of the time. I'm looking at the loomis imx or the dobyns champion, but I am open to other makers. I'm thinking of a 7'3 to 7'6 rod in mh or h, but honestly I don't know which would be best because I thought my veritas was a little stiff. Looking in the 200-300 range thanks. Will be paired with my bb1 pro or my curado I

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

I've saw a lot about the 13 rods, so I am interested in them. But the extra fast taper is the thing I don't like, I was really wanting a fast taper. Maybe I am wrong?

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

I'll let others answer your question, just

want to welcome you aboard, Dan!

fishing user avatarkingmotorboat reply :

Check out the okuma tcs 7 foot heavy. I'm thinking about getting one at the advice of Glenn

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Thanks for the welcome!! I've always wanted to join this site because I've looked on it for help for a while.

Welcome were all like a family here. We put the fun in dysfunctional

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Haha I should fit right in then, especially if I keep making two piece rods out of worm and jig rods

fishing user avatariabass8 reply :

If you're interested in Dobyns, wait few weeks for the 4th of July sales and get the DX744 for under 300. Would be perfect for what you want to use it for.

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Where do they have those sales? And does it lower the price of the champion series?

fishing user avatarJon G reply :

It would lower the price of the Champions but you will want to jump on the Champion Extreme. the DX 744 is my favorite rod and if I could only have 1 rod this would be it.

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

I would check out the Kistler Helium 3.   They are in your price range and use a really great blank.

fishing user avatarThe Great Blue Heron reply :

I like you G Loomis IMX plan the best.

fishing user avatarkschultz76 reply :

Ton of great options in your price range...St Croix Avid and LTB, Dobyns, Loomis, Shimano. I love my St Croixs and think they'd serve you well. But another great option at the top of your price range is the Megabass Orochi XX rods...for your application the Extreme Mission Type F or Diablo Spec R would be good options as long as your hook + plastic is getting you at or over 3/8 total weight.

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Ok all those sounds good, between the dobyns and the loomis rods are there any advantages of one over ther other? Or is it mostly a personal preference? I've been seeing a lot of negative reviews on the new imx rods which worries me

fishing user avatarkschultz76 reply :

My only experience with Loomis rods is using my fathers older GLX and GL3 rods which were all bought before the redesign, some of them back in 1996. They are all great rods and have served him well.

I've read similar reviews and consensus seems to be that for the money the new IMX don't live up to their previous reputation and don't compete well with other rods in the price range. That's again all here say that I've read. What you do get with Loomis is a made in USA quality product with outstanding support/warranty options.

I'm not as big a Dobyns fan as many others, but have limited experience with them. The only one I still have is a Champ 703c and it balances great and is plenty sensitive. Between Dobyns and Loomis though I think I'd take a shot at a Loomis, look for a rep sample GLX.

For my money in your price range I'd be getting a St Croix or Megabass. You stated you don't like truly fast or ex fast actions, great thing about Megabass Orochi XX rods is they aren't as fast as some other domestic rods which makes them more versatile.

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Well you guys have really peaked my interest with the megabass orochi xx rods, I love the handle design on them. And the have a lot of different sizes a really like, because I kind of am looking to buy into a brand if you know what I mean. I'd like to have rods that all feel the same. So I can slowly replace my other rods with the same brand. I'm going to have to do more research on them, the only thing I don't like so far is that it only has a 3 year warranty vs limited lifetime with the other rods

fishing user avatarJohn G reply :

Check the Completed Listings on eBay for Loomis MBR843 and you will see that you missed an excellent condition Loomis MBR843GLX for around $220.00. It would have been a very nice rod for your intended purposes. If you are patient, you can buy a much nicer, used in excellent condition rod, for less that than the rods you are asking about.

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Well I am weary of used rods, but that sounded like a good deal. I have always thought there was a reason a rod is being sold though, that's what has always made me weary

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Also how does the Megabass f5 power feel? It says it's rated medium/medium heavy, that seems as if it would be to light for what I am trying to do.

I have sold plenty of rods and the buyers have been extremely pleased. On the other hand, I have bought used rods and have been extremely pleased. You need to understand that not everyone uses their rods all the time. I have bought 4 Loomis's with the Wiebe reel seat that has not been used by Loomis in a long time and those rods are in near new condition. You just have to know what you want and be willing to wait for it to show up in the classifieds or an auction site.
fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Thanks, and I have been looking at the glx rods on eBay and in the classifieds. Hopefully I can find one I like and would actually be able to afford. I'm Afraid that once I get a glx I will want nothing else but them from now on, and that sounds expensive.

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

And also what about the warranty when you buy a used rod? Does that mean it has no warranty?

fishing user avatarStapsy reply :

What line, type of cover, and plastics do you usually fish?  The Orochi XX Extreme Mission Type F, 13 *** MH, and Orochi XX Perfect Pitch could all be contenders.  The *** MH and XX Perfect pitch feel quite similar to me, with the Perfect Pitch having a slight step up in power.  Both have nice light tips for pitching and casting that quickly moves into a strong backbone.  The EMTF is lighter in power than both.  It is more similar to the *** in terms of power but has a relatively stiffer tip section with a more moderate action.

If you provide a bit more information on what and how you will be fishing the rod I would be happy to go into more detail.

fishing user avatarSNK reply :

Someone already mentioned Kistler rods. Myself, I have the Kistler Medium Heavy Fast, rated 3/16 to 7/8oz, handles t-rigs in the weights you refer to amazingly well. The action is just on the slower side of Fast (not moderate by any means)), some anglers prefer it that way.

fishing user avatarBatson reply :

For the money, you can get a custom!!

If it were me, I'd get the 7'3 MH 13 ***. Love those rods, can't say enough good things about them.

Live in Washington? You should come on by!

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

I usually use 14-17 lb flouro line. I rig z-craws, crawfish baits, senkos, and ole monster worms mainly. It's not for really fishing think cover, maybe light brush from time to time. And you say the emtf is a true medium/medium heavy rating? I worry if that would have enough backbone for my hooksets

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

And I know a guy sponsored by kistler so I will check them out, and I prefer rods on the slower side of fast as well

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

My main worry is does the emtf have enough power to set the hook in the 5/0 and 6/0 owner ewg hooks I use for my thicker t-rig plastics?

fishing user avatarjtesch reply :

For the lighter weight t-rigs I love my Shimano Cumara. Super light and sensitive, I use the 6'8" M Xf. It's only rated to 1/4 oz but it can handle a decent fish and the action is perfect for tossing light weights

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Well I think I have it narrowed down now, I'm mainly looking at a used loomis glx, or the orochi xx emtf. I can't believe I'm about to drop this kind of money on a rod haha. But are there anyone who has used these two rods to compare them? Or anyone that owns similar ones as these? And thanks guys for all the help so far, I'm very new to higher end rods.

Give Tackle Trap a call. They can answer any questions you have about Megabass rods. I'm willing to bet that they direct you towards the Diablo Spec R. I throw the same weights the majority of the time. That's the rod Gary recommended to me for that application. It's not just a shorter EMTF. The action is different too.

fishing user avatarStapsy reply :

The EMTF will be perfect for what you want to do.  It is almost too powerful for 3/16 oz texas rigs, but with the baits you listed it will be fine.  To me, the ideal lure weight for that rod is about 1/2 oz total and you should be right in that range.

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Thanks stapsy, I throw light tighten but all the plastics I throw are heavy so i think it should be heavy enough. I'm starting to believe the emtf is the rod for me

fishing user avatarkschultz76 reply :

You will have no problems setting the hook on those baits with the EMTF or the Diablo Spec R, both have plenty of power. And since you like an action on the slower side of fast they will suit you will. I'd think the Perfect Pitch would be too powerful and too fast for you based on what I know of it. I set the hook on a 4/0 VMC heavy EWG rigged with a KVD rodent and 3/8 tungsten no problem with Spinnerbait Special and it is more moderate and just a bit less power then the Diablo or EMTF.

I personally don't worry about the warranty. 3 years is plenty of time for manufacturer issues to show up and be resolved, and I've heard good things about their service. I also buy all my MB rods from The Tackle Trap who offer outstanding support and are willing to help you get service from the manufacturers they deal with. Other longer warranties beyond that are awesome but they're really service plans to cover your own mishaps and you generally pay to use them.

X3 on contacting Gary at The Tackle Trap for input and to purchase. Gary has a lot of on water time with the Orochi and knows the high end rod business. He will help you dial in your selection on the EMTF or Diablo or any other rod.

Update us on how it goes!

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Ok I'm gonna give the tackle trap a call, is it tackle trap.com? Because I cannot find megabass rods on there site edit: nevermind I found them they have there own section for megabass

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

The G. Loomis IMX 893C JWR is ideal for you if you want a longer rod, it's 7'5".

What you will notice is the newer Loomis rods are not like the original rods, they bend differently and are very light weight for their power rating. This is a 3 power that feels more like a 5 power, very strong. This is a full handle design rod.

Whatever rid you decide on touch and feel it before buying and consider customer service, warranty etc.

You can have a custom rod made for this price range!

Tom

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Thanks all, I'm still very into the emtf im calling tackle trap tommorow. But could you tell me a few custom makers in my price range? I've never even looked up a custom. Sorry to have so many questions, the most I have spent on a rod was $100 on a Johnny Morris sig I got on sale. So $250+ on a rod scares me

I think the Bait Monkey smells blood in the water, look out...

Warning once you buy one Megabass...you'll want to own them all.

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

That's good to hear, I want to standardize all my bottom contact rods, so if this one pleases me I will have another. From the reviews of there customer service it looks like I need to buy from tackle trap to avoid problems in the future.

fishing user avatarStapsy reply :

Definitely give tackle trap a call. I bought my NRX 893 from Gary and it is a pleasure dealing with him. He was a huge help in narrowing down my choices and selecting the right rod based on exactly what I wanted. Tackle Trap provides a lot of added value with their service.

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

I will for sure, I really like the rod I'm looking at. I've been researching them all day at work, the only problem I see is cs. But tackle trap seems to fix that

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Yeah I have had it happen many times to, I'm big on the vision 110 now. Seems like everything I see megabass I want now

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Update: talked to Bryan at the tackle trap, and the emtf will be in stock on Tuesday, I plan on ordering one then. Thanks all for the help!!

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Well my rod is on its way, hopefully it will be here on Friday so I can try it out this weekend. I also splurged on some sunline super fc sniper to try out. Can't wait for the weekend. Thanks for all the help guys

fishing user avatarkschultz76 reply :

Awesome enjoy it!!

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Well my rod came into today, and wow is this thing light and balanced. It feels more like a 6' rod in the hand. It is extremely easy for me to flip and roll cast. I took down to the river for a sec to feel it and it is extremely sensitive, I'm in love already. And also this rod is beautiful, looks like a piece of art

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Caught the first one on it today and the rod is amazing, definitely worth the money to me. Extremely sensitive, lightweight, and loads beautifully

fishing user avatarDan_the_fisher reply :

Yes they are very beautiful, and I could believe I caught such a hog in the river here as I don't river fish much anymore since I have a boat. And yes I'm already looking at the other models planning ahead haha
