Citica I Rant 2024

fishing user avatardam0007 reply :

Not too long ago everyone had the Curado for $129. Now the new Citica is listed on a few sites for $149. Sure enough the Curado is back to the MSRP. Not for nothing but I'd feel ripped off paying $149 for a Citica at this point. /rant

You bought to soon but you don't need me to tell you that. Just out of curiosity, why did you pay so much for the Citica when the Curado can be bought cheaper all day everyday?

I didn't buy anything just an observation of the how the pricing drop coincided with the Citica release and markup.

Oh ok. I misread your post. It will be interesting in the coming months to find out low the Citica drops in price.

The only aspect of their thinking that I haven't liked lately is them bringing JDM reels to the USDM and making the new Antares such a large reel. Other than that, what's wrong with their thinking.

Haha no prob. Was just telling Hooligan I'm in the market for (4) reels. All the same, workhorse purposes. Really want 100ish size but metanium is out my price range for 4 lol. So I'm in the market none the less just happened to realize the pricing debacle. Surprised the Citica got a mark up I would be all over them day one. I may end up going with the Scorpion XTs or Chronarch Ci4s if budget allows it.

I know the ch50 or scopion 1000 would be on my very very shortlist

Japan Lure Shop has the XT1000 for under $150.00 right now. I just got a Curado 200HG and I am thrilled with it. I prefer it over the XT1000 for bottom contact baits because of the fast gear ratio and it palms great. It's not as small as my XT1000's but it still palms great for me.

I think it's fair to say that Japan Lure Shop is one of everyone's favorite JDM reel sellers.

The 14 scorpion and curado I are they the same thing minus paint job?

fishing user avatarrobster80 reply :

surely the price will drop soon. i bought my curado i for 179 as soon as they were released and that was on e bay. maybe a month later u could find em for 145-150 on there. hopefully the citica will drop to around 110-120

Yeah, impossible to pay $149 for a Citica while the Curado can be had cheaper right now. It's a little crazy and a little frustrating because the Citica E was like a goldmine when it came to quality for price. The new Citica I looks awesome but as we've said, for $150? Not so sure. I'll buy one for closer to $100 whenever that chance comes along. I can wait until that time comes ;) Unless that dreaded monkey dictates otherwise.

I think the only difference minus the pait job is the new Scorpion has 4 bearings in the handle and the Curado has 2. I am going to add 2 more bearings to my Curado handle eventually.

E series chronarch and curado are close to the same thing, which downgraded the chronarch.

Curado redesign to the G series in response to Lews getting more customers with speed spool models.

The $100 added prices for JDM reels to US retailers.

Their customer service can't decide either to warranty their reels for parts by sending you parts or having you ship it to them, and that goes for the same parts.

Shimbindo fiasco that still occurs.

Their denial of septon knobs getting sticky.

To name a few..

Their service/responses/pricing at times is just off, doesn't make them bad of a company. But I won't derail any further :eyebrows:

I sent them my buddies bait runner 6500B to get repaired 3 times and they never fixed the issue which was the bail assembly they replaced everything else lol they ended up sending back a new model bait runner and a spare spool. So it paid off to complain about the miscommunications but still. Other than that I haven't had any issues with their service dept. always easy to get parts when needed and half the time they don't charge.

I was surprised to see it at $150 retail too. The prices will drop eventually so it's not that big of a deal.

As for the "septon knobs getting sticky", I had issues with the grey ones that originally came with the Curado Es. I don't agree that they denied it because they did improve the quality on the black ones, which you can get as replacements/ones on the Chronarch E.

Why would anybody want to "rant: on the CI?  I predict it will be very hard to beat as a best value reel.  I am excited to have this option.   I own 6 Citica E's and opted to do a bearing install to make it more similar to a Curado E.   I won't have to do this with the CI.   It looks outstanding and should last decades with regular maintenance.

People are ranting because the pricing doesn't make sense. Nobody is saying it won't be a good reel.

fishing user avatarGrantman83 reply :

I thought the curado pricing was merely a temporary "sale" put through by shimano. I didn't expect it to stay at that price.

Citica will be $149.99 and Curado will go back to $179.99. Maybe an aluminum version of the chronarch at the $230 price point coming?

I don't see them discontinuing the curado I one year after its release. Something else is going on here

What he said below you! I was contemplating buying (4) of them. My gameplan ended up changing and got something different. My rant was/is Shimano never discounts in U.S. Retailers. The one time they do they mark down their best selling reel of all time $50 then launch a lower quality reel for more then immediately reset the MSRP on the better of the 2... That's just terrible business practice IMO. Personally I take it as a slap in the face as a loyal Shimano consumer that regularly shops in that price bracket.

fishing user avatarTrippyJai reply :

I agree, Shimano doesn't make sense. They shouldn't put the Curado on sale if they were going to introduce the Citica I so soon or if you're going to have the sale, then delay the Citica arrival.

I remember when gas was $0.29.9 a gallon. Ten gallons of gas, McDonald's was $0.15 hamburgers and $0.20 cheeseburger and the drive in was $5.00 a car full. A saturdaynite date was cheap. The kissy, kissy, huggy, huggy was free.

Check around for good prices. I save when I can and spend were I can't save it all comes out in the wash and keeps me fishing.

I still have my very first bait caster a $12 Shakespeare. It still works. I caught my first bass on a jig with it.

Some people let world hunger, climate change, terrorism and nuclear proliferation worry them.  Others a possible $20 overprice of a newly released bass reel, I guess.

I'm glad to have this choice.   I don't do the Revo/BPS/Pflueger/Lews clones.

fishing user avatarbass1980 reply :

Believe it or not....they do listen too so I wouldn't put this "rant" in the waste of time category. Example 13 fishings staff does come on forums and I'm sure they are hearing about the reel seat. I can't say that's the reason they are changing it, but I would like to think it has a role in it.

For Shimano their rep or former rep Bantam is on forums as well. So if there's enough complaints he will listen. Finding an example is probably that whole Curado E Curado G Chronarch E debacle. The average fishermen or women probably wouldn't even know what lies under the paint. I believe it's forum users that saw and knew of those "scheme" and soon enough word passed along. I am pretty sure Shimano got the message that many people knew of it and then it did trickle down to the poor sales of the curado G.

So I believe complaints like this is good as long as it's respective and not truly brand bashing. I feel like the OP's post was respective. His selection of the title may turned off some but the truth is he's just typing what we're thinking. Just my opinion of course.

fishing user avatarjjconnaire reply :

It's funny how company's try to sell you on things by re-naming them. Let's be honest, if u painted the new critica I like a curado I and vices versa you couldn't tell the difference. And shimano will tell you that the curado has the S3D spool which is perfectly balanced and the citica does not. Let's evaluate this "better" spool. That's like balancing a wheel before you put the tire on and saying it will perform better because the wheel is balanced. The line is NOT evenly distributed on the spool, so therefore it doesn't matter lol. I have a curado 201I and love it but I only believe so much BS company's can sell

Seeing as the new Citica has the S3D spool as well your post makes no sense. The Curado and Citica have shared the same platform for a few generations now so this new Citica shouldnt be a surprise to anyone. If you don't like them don't buy them, simple as that.
