I JUST got home from Gander Mountain with a Daiwa Megaforce w/ Twitchin' Bar, and took it out of the box. It humms when I turn the reel arm. Is that normal? I can hear the gears moving inside, and it's making a humming noise. Should I take it back?
Did the display model hum? Doesn't sound right to me.
No. This one came from under the display in the storage area. Out of the box it was doing this. I tested the display and it was fine.
THEY HUMMM BECAUSE THEY FORGOT THE WORDS
take it back
If the breaks are set in free spool they will hum. Try adjusting the break system.
I'm just going to take it back. I tried everything last night, and you can still hear the gears humming, and the handle is stiff.
Put some oil on it i have four of those reels and they all work great.
Return it and buy a Shimano

Here we go again.... :
The viento also has a twitchin bar if you still want the twitchin bar. It cost more, but you get what you pay for.
Work the bait with the rod instead of using the reel to twitch your bait

From my understanding of it I think the 'Twitchin' Bar' is mainly used to help you let out slack better. I could be wrong, but when I tried it I took it as you were supposed to use the bar to let line out.
Again, I could be wrong, but it would help if you have a 15 foot deep crevice to cover. Instead of pulling line off the reel you can just let the line go with the bar.
twitching bar receives line...not let out line..... :-?
yea twitchin bar quickly pull in up to 20" of line. this is used for if you want to hop a jig or worm or crawl something on the botom. its supposed to be easy convienent one handed operation.
luckyinkentucky,
If I sat in a room with no other noise, and took a new reel out of the box and started spinning the crank, I would hear the gears also. I would also hear the humming of an empty ported spool when turning at high speed. The hum is air moving through the ported (drilled holes) spool.QuoteIt humms when I turn the reel arm. I would spool line on it and take it out and try using the reel, if your not satisfied then return the reel.
dsaavedra,
WRONG!Quoteyea twitchin bar quickly pull in up to 20" of line.
A simple touch of the thumb lets you pick up seven inches (7") of slack line instantly or impart a subtle twitching action to a jig or plastic worm.
Which on a 7' rod would be picking the tip up for about 3" then take up the slack.
As bassin1887 stated...
I agree 100%, learn to use your rod.....QuoteWork the bait with the rod instead of using the reel to twitch your bait
Tight Lines!!!!
the tiwtchin bar does take in up to 20" of line. if you press it gently then it will only take up a few inches of line. but if you press it hard and fast then it can take in upto 20. my friend has one of these reels adn i spend like an hour playing with it ;D but it all depends on how quickly/hard you press the bar as to how much line it takes in.
thats what the handle on the reel is for i thought??? so why do you need a separate bar to pick up slack in your line?

You could just continue using your rod and handle, but when I tried the twitchin bar I think I would rather use that for worms and jigs. I find it more comfortable then turning the handle really slowly and I still prefer holding my line with one of my hands to feel things and the twicthin bar makes it easier. I hope they have more reels with the feature in the future.
I have one and don't really like it, it was a gift. But there is no way that pressing on the bar pulls in 20" of line. Maybe pumping the bar moves the line faster but it does not pull in 20" of line in one press. To me the main objective of this bar is for flippin and pitchin because it engages the spool. So instead of having to change hands or even turn the reel handle if you press the bar after free spool it engages the spool.
take it back and get something worth your cash, a shimano
haven't seen a post from the guy since Nov. 12th, think he has used any of the suggestion.
:-?
He took it back, bought a Steez and then noticed a cheesy whirring noise when he reeled it in.
;D
.......
Coffee all over the key board now....
Reelmechanic,
I'm new to this board, and it's probably been brought up before, but what reels do you like and dislike? Since you get to see broken reels all the time, is there a particular reason to stay away from a particular Daiwa, Shimano, Abu, etc.??
Ryan_Johnson,
Well welcome to the forum!
All of the manufacturers that I service (Garcia, Shimano, Daiwa, Quantum) build quality reels, and there are really no reasons to stay away from any of their products. The reason for most reel failures isn't the manufacturer fault, it is lack of individual maintenance on the anglers side. Buy a 150 dollar reel and think it can be used and treated like a 60 dollar reel, and it will hold up just like one. Treat it with the respect that the high end reels of today deserve and it will out live the angler.
Just my .02¢
I tried a couple of these reals and the one in the case hummed and I had the guy get another one off the shelf and tried it and it sounded good I would just try another one.
You guys sure like to dig up old posts.
I was rid of this reel 3 weeks ago. I returned it, and got a Daiwa Tierra.
Maybe you should have posted and said something.....
