Would you rather have more rods than reels, or more reels than rods? 2024

fishing user avatarJFlynn97 reply :

Just curious what people think.

fishing user avatarLog Catcher reply :

I have more reels than rods. I like to able to change reels when needed depending on what I am using. I can't afford to buy rods for every application and having to many rods gets to be a mess in the boat. I try to use each rod for several different things.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

One is no good without the other. I keep backups, but they are complete combos.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Over the years I have saved more reels then rods, easier to store.

I keep about 15 rod/reel combos in my boat and a few extra reels I change out for night fishing with higher test line if needed. More reels then rods.

Same here.  I have more reels than rods, but the extra reels don't do me any good sitting on a shelf at home.  I do take one or two extra reels with me when I visit relation in another state.  Last time it came in handy.  Had spooled one reel with 10# P-Line Fluoroclear.  Line broke too easily so the rod got set aside for the rest of the day, and the reel changed once back at the house.

EDIT:  I have more reels because I like reels.  :teeth:

fishing user avatarBeetlebz reply :

I have more reels than rods for swapping out line. I actually need to get one more Fuego. I want to spool one with straight 65lb power pro so If I get to a lake with lots of mats and pads I can swap out the YZH on my flipping rod. It's a benefit because I can't stand braid when I don't absolutely need it. Right now my braid swap out reel is a kastking stealth which feels like a lawn mower next to my tatula sports cars.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

I have a few spare reels and several extra spools.

For both spinning & casting gear.

Really makes the too many rigs I do have even more versatile.

What A-Jay said.

The spools add a whole nother dimension. I like reels...then I get too many...so I need another rod or two. Ok, so I can use this different spool across different platforms, let's try it out. Yeah.

fishing user avatarMumbly reply :

I am a complete sucker when I stumble across a sale. For the last year or so it's been rods. I have 7 baitcasting reels and 15 rods. It's a sickness.

fishing user avatarbigfruits reply :

i have 4 times as many rods as i do reels.

Let’s see!

Do I want to sit in the bottom of the boat, cut off a lure, remove the reel, put the reel on a different rod, re-string it, & tie on a new lure...

Or pickup a different combo?

fishing user avatarOkobojiEagle reply :

Quite a few more rods than reels!  I've been on a long journey searching for that perfect rod, but we all know different powers, lengths and actions are needed for hair jigs, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, tube baits, flukes, ect. ect. ect!  My Abu Premiers and Pflueger spinning reels cover the range of techniques I use.

Equal

fishing user avatarOnthePotomac reply :

Equal here also.  17 baitcast set ups and 4 spinning reel set ups.  Only MH and medium baitcast rods.

But this is 20 years of collecting.

fishing user avatareyedabassman reply :

I will take more reels for me!

fishing user avatar.ghoti. reply :

Reels are, overall, less application specific than rods, so it makes sense to have more rods than reels.

That being said, I have no sense when it comes to rods and reels. When I find a bargain, rod or reel, and it's something I like, or think I will like, I tend to jump on it. And, that's like having a single boot. It needs a mate, and I'm going to be bothered by it until I find one.

fishing user avatarkickerfish1 reply :

I have more reels than rods. Simply put mono, fluorocarbon, and braid I use for different things. Simply switch out a reel on said rod and I have something I can use ideally for a separate technique. Case in point I have custom MHX Hi mod 874. It is a great frogging rod but also is a really nice bigger jig rod. I have a Scorpion 1000xt with 12 # Sniper I use for jig fishing but during the frog bite I have a Exscence DC with Braid I will swap out and use.

Plus it is nice to have a few spare reels on hand. I have had a few random things happen over the years while fishing. One of which involved the reel locking up all the way to where the handle could not be turned at all. Also was dumb enough at the beginning of the season once to check the settings on a reel after I serviced it. Had the brakes all turned off, tension knob lose, and drag backed way off, made a cast and blew up the spool and line. Couldn't salvage the line so I had to cut and respool.

Therefore it is nice to have one casting and one spinning spare reel along.

I also have about 10 all rounder outfits and another 15 that are technique specific. Whether you need more rods or reels is totally up to you.

fishing user avatarriverbasser reply :

That's genius Ajay. I need to buy a couple extra spools. I fish different bodies of water one with tons a vegetation and others with none. Any time I fish around grass I want braid and when I'm not I don't. Keeping extra spools would save money and solve that problem

fishing user avatarBass_Fishing_Socal reply :

I would like to have more rods AND reels.

fishing user avatarDangerfield reply :

I think I would have more rods than reels.

fishing user avatarRahlow reply :

Wow, poor smucks like me read threads like this and sit in wonder and amazement.

I have 4 Quantum 1310 MG reels and 4 matching Ugly Sticks attached. 1 Shimano spinning outfit.

I do have 1 Quantum spooled with lighter line than the rest,,,

fishing user avatarWildbillb reply :

Um.....yes. it depends on which I have found on sale the latest.  It bounces back and forth depending on what I find that I want to try out.

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

More rods than reels for me, especially when it comes to spinning gear.  With casting gear it's more even, but would still skew it towards rods.  using braid with a leader makes it easy to interchange techniques with different rods with fewer types of spools.

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

I'd like to be equal, but once I sold one of my Chronarchs

I had an extra casting rod. So I swap the 50e between them,

one is MH, the other ML, so good for multiple techniques.

As for spinning, equal for the most part. An old Stradic is

in need of repair, so I have a Spirex 1000RG on a rod. That's

4 Stradic setups and a Spriex setup.

Wait. Just counted again. Rods outnumber reels by a small

margin.

Why did you get rid of a Chronarch 50E!  ????

I still have one! :P

Was part-n-parcel of my spinning-is-fine period

of adjustment. Needed the money then, too.

fishing user avatarArcs&sparks reply :

Wayyy more rods than reels.  A lot of my reels see a variety of rods given the time of year.  Ice fishing, Stripers, salmon, trout, bass...

Two is bettter than 1! ????. I hear ya man.

I’m never giving up mines though! ????

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

i prefer to have a matching number of rods and reels. But I do like to keep some slightly mismatched combos so I always have an excuse to buy another. I pared them down to only the ones I used a while back. But I still have an UL reel on a light rod. Hmmm...

fishing user avatarMichaelCopeland reply :

In my opinion, one without the other is pretty useless. If I had the money to have spare anything, it would be complete combos of what I needed for whatever situation I faced. If I had the time I'd like to have to fish, then I might have an extra reel or rod to experiment some. Nothing against those who would do it differently. I'm a firm believer in fishing with what I feel comfortable with and you should too. However I or you choose to do it. In the end, it's the fisherman that catches the fish, not necessarily the gear(although gear helps). ????
