Mono Or Fluorocarbon For Crankin? 2024

fishing user avatarSodus Bay Scooter reply :

Sorry if this has been beaten up before but I'm just trying to get an idea what everyone prefers these days.

Thanks

fishing user avatarABW reply :

I like 12 lb mono (Trilene Big Game). Good amount of stretch for treble hooked lures.

fishing user avatarHoosierHawgs reply :

Mono for all my treble baits. Don't want to rid ripping hooks or pulling a bait away from a fish.

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

I go with 12lb Berkley 100% Fluoro.

fishing user avatarsmalljaw67 reply :

I like mono for my cranking but if you are shallow cranking mono would be a better bet and deep cranking fluorocarbon would be the better deal.

fishing user avatarColdSVT reply :

Both work just fine

I happen to prefer 12# seaguar invisx flouro

fishing user avatarfishballer06 reply :

I prefer braid with a FC tip or straight FC. Better invisibility and better abrasion resistance.

fishing user avatarAlonerankin2 reply :

What do you prefer?

Co- poly for me, on crankbaits...

fishing user avatarSodus Bay Scooter reply :

Honestly since I've been fishing I've never even spooled mono on any of my baitcasters.

fishing user avatarTeam9nine reply :

Fluorocarbon on mid or deep diving crankbaits. On shallow running baits (squarebills, etc.) it doesn't matter as much. I'll often use a mix of either line depending upon what is set up at the time.

20 lb. Braid , I don't like stretch in my line . I have never had a problem with treble hooks pulling out as I am not one to do hard hook sets . Using sharp treble hooks like Owner ST-41's makes the need for crazy hooksets non existent ...

I like #12 Sunline Super Natural

Mono for treble hook baits.

Pros now are saying to use flouro for treble hook baits.

Go figure.

Same............all braid, all the time. A "few" cranking fish manage to make it to my boat each year.

12# Yo Zuri

fishing user avatarStingray23 reply :

10-12lb Seaguar Invizx

fishing user avataraavery2 reply :

I use both, I assume that for the sake of this discussion we can put Co-poly in the same class as mono.     I use FC for my medium and deeper diving crankbaits, or if abrasion is a factor.  For shallow running baits that I want to keep shallow I use Mono.

I actually started this thread with this in mind. I know KVD and others swear by Fluoro and I've heard time and time again to use mono for treble hook lures. This is why I'm confused.

fishing user avatarSonik reply :

In the past I used flouro for cranks. No problem. When it was time to respool, I tried some clear Big Game mono to save some money. I for sure got fewer strikes but didn't lose any fewer fish than what flouro lost. So, fewer fish.

So, I went over and tried 12# P-Line Floroclear. Got even more strikes on it than I did with flourocarbon. It did feel a tiny bit stretchier than flouro but not a rubber band by any means. And it handles way better than flouro and the Big Game. 600yds for like $7.

fishing user avatarJGBassinAL reply :

I use 10 lb. Sunline Super Fluoro for all deep diving crankbaits and I use 17 lb. Sunline Defier Armilo for my 1.5 and 2.5 sized squarebills. The stretch with mono is good for trebles when you are using a stiffer rod. I personally use glass rods for my deep cranking and the stretch of monofilament is too much when using a glass rod IMO.

I tend to agree with this. What line you choose should definately be dictated by what rod size and type you are using to crank with and what kind of stuff your throwing at or around.

12# Yo-Z

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

10lb Yo-Zuri hybrid for shallow cranks.  12lb Invizx for the deeper stuff.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

copolymer 10-15 pound.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

Mono or Fluorocarbon for Crankin?

neither

fishing user avatarBassaddict74 reply :

I used to be a die hard Mono guy for cranking. I fish CB's a lot & since I switched to Fluorocarbon I will never go back to Mono.

IMO I think the positives out weigh the negatives. Better feel, abrasion resistance & for deep cranking you defiantly get the bait deeper, no doubt about it

  Just my 2 cents.

fishing user avatarSodus Bay Scooter reply :

Thanks for the comments guys, I think I'm gonna go fluoro. It's the only line that sinks.

fishing user avatarFelix77 reply :

12# InvizX

6# Yozuri Hybrid... sounds light but that stuff is STRONG
