Going To Try Braid On My Spinning Reel Again. Suggestions Please. 2025

fishing user avatartentimesover reply :

I tried braid on my 2500 series spinning rig several years ago but dropped it after trying YoZuri Hybrid. After the last several days I'm ready to spool up one of my spinning rigs with braid though. It's been very windy and trying to control the boat and dodging boat docks I've not always been able to do the best line control -- and, thus have ended up with loopy line that is cutting into my fishing time.

I plan to try the braid with a Hybrid leader. What braid would you suggest for spinning fishing mostly shaky heads and weightless Sinkos?

PS - I've heard advice to play the line out behind the boat to relieve the twist. Do people really do this in practice. It seems like a time consuming pain to me that would have to be regularly repeated as the line develops twist again.

fishing user avatarNorth Ga Hillbilly reply :

Its hard to beat Power Pro.

I've never done the anti twist behind the boat, but I have done it in the river and it works well and only takes a minute or two

fishing user avatarjerzeeD reply :

Suffix 832.... Awesome

Braid won't help you in the wind, and depending on the diameter of braid you choose, it could actually make some hideous wind-knots.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

What is more time consuming? Dealing with twists when your fishing, or trolling the twists out at the end of the day?

As far as braid goes, Power Pro, Power Pro Slick 8, and Sufix 832 in 20# size are all fine for spinning gear.

fishing user avatareyedabassman reply :

Make sure you use a backing on the reel! I like power pro or Sufix 832.

I use 20# power pro on my 2500 Symetre that i also use for wacky, shaky and weightless senkos.

I think its the perfect setup for a 6' 6" mh f spinning rig with a floro leader .

i use 20lb power pro..with some backing... no problems at all.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

Braid will not troll out like mono does, well worth the few moments it takes to do it. One way to help minimize wind knots with braid is a long flowing cast rather than a snap cast. When snap casting the line is coming off the spool very fast, then hits the first guide, there's your knot. The spool design may have a impact too, I have 2 brands of reels that have never had wind knots to my memory, other brands under the same conditions have had knots. I don't think the brand of braid has any bearing on whether it will knot, I've tried many.

So, what are the two brands that have never had wind knots. Sounds like those might be desirable additions to a Missouri fisherman's arsenal.

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

A degree of line twist come with the territory of spinning tackle but it can be all but eliminated by using a line treatment, using swivels where appropriate, always closing the bail by hand and making sure to put tension on the line before retrieving and last but not least pay attention to the line roller and see taht it is serviced regularly. Troll out whatever twist accumulates during the day and you'll have a much easier time with mono lines. Braid makes life even easier, though nothing is perfect and the ones mentioned are all good.

Shimano stradic & Daiwa tierra

Yes, people really do this. Sometimes there's little choice. Twist is generally not a problem with braid. I've used 15# Power Pro or Fireline braid on Daiwa 2500-size reels.

fishing user avatarhatrix reply :

I like to use 30# Power Pro. It seems like any thing less wants to dig in more then I would like.

fishing user avatarZoff reply :

I accidentally ended up trying Zebco Omnibraid. My Wife was at the local WallyWorld and I was in need of some braid. Called her up and told her what i needed... POWERPRO BRAID!!!!!! All she heard was braid and grabbed the cheapest she saw... yup... the Zebco. Based on looks... rough... poorly made... ugly... not good... cheap... I shall not go on. I put it on one of my Spinners because I was not about to try it on a BC. Ya know what? It is OK on a Spinner. Still won't put it on a BC but works really well for my Drop Shot rig with a leader.

fishing user avatarDiggy reply :

I have zebco braid on one bc and no probs, caught some hogs on it. I have suffix and pp also and this was 5 to 13 bucks cheaper

fishing user avatarBluecrewbass reply :

i would go with suffix

fishing user avatarPackard reply :

Suffix 832 ghost

I use a pair of Shimano Symetre spinning reels. Isn't the line handling pretty much the same on the Symetre and the Stradic?

fishing user avatarTxBankFisherman reply :

I never used backing on my spinning reel... just put a small piece of electrical tape over the knot and worked great...

You've got to use all palamor knots with braid... and Powerpro is a great value priced line...

I use a palamor knot on all my knots now... it's a lot stronger knot so I'm glad I had to learn it.... if you fish for some species of fish... like speckled trout or crappie you got to be a careful and not set the hook to hard....

I think flurocarbon works much better for those species of fish...

Not really. Uni works just as well. If it's slipping, you are tying it wrong. Here's an incomplete list of knots you can use with braid: http://www.powerpro.com/publish/content/global_fish/en/us/power_pro_v2/info/using_powerpro/knots.html

I totally agree with Francho ! 60 years of fishing and I've used the palomar about 4 times, not saying there is anything wrong with it. I use the simplest of knots with braid: clinch, improved clinch, alberto and to the spool just 3 or 4 overhand knots over my tape. I'm a terrible knot tier and these knots hold my offshore fish, I don't think a crappie is going to pose any problem.

fishing user avatartrevor reply :

Momoi's Diamond Braid is my favorite, with Stren Sonic Braid up there.

fishing user avatarBassinLou reply :

I use #30 power pro with some mono backing on my Shimano stradic and love it. I have yet to get a loop of any kind since i switched to braid. I use #15 P-Line fluro leader and i am in business.

no the stradic has the aero wrap on it witch puts the line on the spool differently
fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

I use braid as main line on all my reels, with fluorocarbon leaders as needed. I have few complaints, one I do have that I don't see mentioned, and it might help your decision one way or the other, is the "bow" wind blows in braid. It drives me nuts at times, but I live with it for all the reasons I like braid. If I know I am going to be fishing in stiff wind all the time, it might sway me back to using fluoro. If $$ and space in my boat were not an issue, I would have a few extra combos spooled up with fluoro just for that reason as well.

fishing user avatarTRYTOFISH reply :

suffix 832. I got the abu orra reel recently thats made for braid. Fished hard with it sofar this year with no problems. Also put it on the new lightning rod for braid.

fishing user avatarSherlock 60 reply :

Been using 20# Power Pro on spinning gear for about 6 years with absolutely no problems. I always use a palomar knot and usually have a snap swivel tied on.

fishing user avatarFish Chris reply :

Love my TUF-Line :)

From 3/10, on the micro lights, to 8/30 on my medium lights, to 50lb on my swimbait rods... I even have some 80 spooled up on heavy rods for Sturgeon.... but then I turn around and fish for the Sturgeon with my micro lights anyway :) LOL

Oh, I'm pretty much a spinning reel only guy.......
