Good Reel In The $100-$180 Price Range?... 2024

fishing user avatar*Hank reply :

I'm looking for a good real in the $100-price range,

I'll be paring it w/ a *** *** black something in a 7.1:1 or 8.1:1 gear ratio for jigs,worms,etc.

Thanks for any suggestions!

fishing user avatarOzark_Basser reply :

I just got a curado i in the mail. I'm digging it. Feels solid like the curado e. Easier to palm than the e. It also casts further. Got it off eBay for 140. 7.2:1

fishing user avatarDocNsanE reply :

Well I've been searching for the answer to this question myself, and the first thing I've discovered is there are a lot of options in this price range. For what it's worth, I've settled on the Daiwa Tatula 7.1:1. It can be found on Amazon.com for about $100-105. Looks like a very smooth reel and the TWS seems like a nice plus. You could go Type-R if you want the 8.1:1 but according to most, it's not necessarily more performing than the regular Tatula and will cost more so that's up to you.

As I said though, there are a lot of quality products to chose from in this bracket. My second choice was a Lews, probably an LFS . But the Tatula just looks like a pretty sweet package for the price and that's what I'll be going for.

Edit: sorry the Tatula I was referring to is actually a 7.3:1

fishing user avatareirwin reply :

My favorite for the money is definitely the BPS Pro Qualifier. Read tons of reviews on them and ended up getting one on sale. I haven't been disappointed yet. I would just read up on the reviews on whichever ones you are looking at and then go and see how they feel in your hand.

fishing user avatarak47soulja22 reply :

Two reels come to mind for that price lews tournament pro or lews gold if you can find it. And the curado I. But I believe anything in that price range should be a great reel.

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

I would be looking at the Tatula R and Curado I.  Both can be found in your price range and come in a 8.1 and 7.2 respectively.

fishing user avataradam32 reply :

For the high end of your range 175-180 you should be still able to find the discontinued model zillion. Nothing else will come close to the zillion in that price range. If you want to stay close to 100 I'd check out a tatula.

I already have a tatula type R 6.4:1 for shallow cranking but I would like something that palms better.

I'm considering the lews speed spool Lfs,It sounds like a great little reel.

fishing user avataryakingfisherman reply :

I have a 6'10 *** M and 7'1 mh ***. One is paired with lews tourney pro and the other with a curado e7. Both balance right at the locking nut. Great setups.

fishing user avatarrobster80 reply :

tatula or curado i. bout to order another curado myself. highly doubt u would b dissapointed

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

The Pro Qualifier should be easily palmable and is on sale for $80 at BPS right now.

fishing user avatardruben reply :

The *** *** in the 8:1 is a sweet little reel that was made to be paired with the *** rods. Definitely worth giving a look.

fishing user avatarillinifan4152 reply :

Shimano Curado I or Chronarch 200e7

That would be a great choice...I have a 2 that I've been using for a couple of years now and have not had any issues whatsoever. I find myself picking up my Lew's reels way more often than my Abu's

fishing user avatarJaxBasser reply :

Tons of options in that price range. Tatula type r, ***, Lews Tournament Pro, Curado I. Most of them can be had well under retail if you look on eBay.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

In your price range all the reponses are going to be "favorites", there is no "best".

The BR Staff has been very impressed with Pinnacle rods and reels, but we all

have other favorites, too. I have several Pinnacle reels and an Okuma, the rest

are Shimano.

I'm not going to be snarky, I'm not going to be snarky, about what is and what ain't a good REAL.  A good

REAL what . . . . . offers so many opportunities to be snarky that it is unfair.  Kind of like sneaking up behind guys on crutches and kicking the crutches.

Should you desire a good REEL that will last for the rest of your life, pop for around $180 or so and buy and Chronarch 50 E.

fishing user avatarOntarioFishingGuy reply :

If you can get a CH50E for 180, go for it! They're 220-240 up here...

fishing user avatarytail reply :

go with shimano, okuma or lews... jmo

Chronarch 50e if you can find it on sale.

fishing user avatarRobert Riley reply :

Lew's Tournament MB seems like the reel you want. If you want to spend a little more you could get TWO LFS Speed Spools, or a Tournament Pro (which is awesome).

fishing user avatarsarcazmo reply :

Hard to beat the E series shimano line of reels...  Love me some Curado/Chronarch/Scorpion action.

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

I like the diawa tatula.

fishing user avatarfisherrw reply :

get a shimano chronarch in 7:1;1 solid reel love mine :respect-059:

fishing user avatar*Hank reply :

I've figured out what I'm gonna get-

Reel: Lews Speed Spool LFS 7:1-1

Rod: Kistler KLX 7Ft. Medium hvy-Taper:fast.

fishing user avatarShockwave reply :

I've been eyeing up the Tatula Type R and the Shimano Chronarch. I think I'll have to try them both.

I have a 7'3 MH F KLX. It's a fantastic stick. You won't be disappointed.

fishing user avatarFishinthefish reply :

Higher end of your price range, Pflueger Patriarch I just got one for 170.

fishing user avatarMass Bassin' reply :

curado 200i by far

fishing user avatarSenkoGuru reply :

I'm a Daiwa guy, IMO they make the best reels. the Tatula can be had for $95.00 and you really can not beat that price for that reel. I liked the old Shimano curado E reels and LOVED the Curado D reels, the Chronarch E is a repainted Curado E and a very good reel too. I just did not like the Curado I reels, they finally started to catch up to some Daiwa tech but that reel just doesn't feel right to me, I like the older ones better. I have a bunch of Lew's reels too and really like them but I like the Daiwa reels the best and that is what I would recommend.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

In that price range: Shimano Curado

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

Too bad you don't like the Tatula.  I love my Type R in 8.1:1.  The *** is another possible candidate.   Okuma makes a couple, the Komodo and Helios, that can be found well within that budget. I got my Tournament Pro (like new at a great price) from a guy who liked his Komodo well enough that he sold the TP so he could buy the Helios when they came out.  Of course the Tournament Pro is another excellent choice at 7.1:1.

I'd suggest the older Zillion, but I'm doubtful you would like it since the Tatula doesn't palm well for you.  Somehow this old man can still fish with one most of the day even as heavy as it is.  :teeth:

Also take a look at the many models offered by Pinnacle.  Recently received my first one.  No line on it yet, but have done a little playing with it.  Very smooth, light, and just plain nice looking reel.

Just offering more choices.  Isn't that what we do best on here?  Typically a poster will ask which one of two (insert rod or reel choices here) he should buy.  We immediately suggest 10 other possible brands/models he should be looking at.  Usually $100 or more over his budget too.  :teeth:

EDIT:  Roger, I think I figured out what bothered you about my post after giving it some thought................................I didn't mention a Shimano.  :laugh5:

I'm not saying I don't like the tatula, it's a solid reel I would just like a lighter reel with that light of a rod.

The Pinnacle Primmus I just received weighs 5.9 oz.  That light enough for you?  Hand tuned from factory.  Paid less than $160 with shipping.

Seems very smooth.  I like the bling factor, too.  Won't buy it at that price on TW, but you can find out more specs about it there than on the Pinnacle website which is sorely lacking in many details on ALL of their reels.  Read the reviews roadwarrior posted.  Just might be the reel for you.

fishing user avatarBrandon Moss reply :

The new BPS Carbonlite (white) 7.1:1 is super smooth and feels extremely durable.  It has the Dual Braking System and you don't even have to open the palm plate to adjust either brake.  It pulls in quick and it has the guts to pull them out of heavy cover.  It is regularly 129.99.  I got mine during the Classic sale and got it for 85.00.  5.8 oz and on sale right now for $99.99 on BPS website.
