Just like the title says. I don't fish mono much and I'm curious if what I have is good or junk. What's your guys favorite and why. Let's say on a crank bait setup.
Berkley Trilene XL
By "mono", I'm going to assume you mean 'nylon' line.
It really depends on what you're looking for.
For sheer manageability, you'd be hard pressed to beat Berkley Trilene XL.
For abrasion-resistance, I'd go with Sufix Siege (Sufix Elite on spinning gear).
As far as stretch is concerned, 'all' monofilament lines are elastic bands (nylon, copolymer, fluorocarbon & hybrid).
Roger
I like XL and Suffix Elite .
Maxima Ultragreen premium copolymer monofilament and Stren Magnaflex ~

Suffix elite seems to be fantastic line so far.

That's a lot of Stren! For me its XL or Stren Original, which ever is cheaper. I also like Sunline Supernatural for topwaters. Good supple line with very little memory. Its rated strength is much closer to its actual tensile strength compared to American lines which are generally underrated, so be aware of that.
I've been using Strenn Mono for the longest time and that's what my dad has used all his life.
Simple question to answer; Sunlne Defier Armilo Nylon line, it is becoming my favorite line period. Hoping they offer this line 7 lb and 30 lb.
Tom
Growing up, Trilene and Stren were the "premium" lines and nowadays Trilene seems easier to find so that's what I use (Trilene XL). However tons of people swear by good old fashioned Ande monofilament.
Most of my reels are spooled with Trilene Big Game, that's my favorite NYLON line.

What line do you have?
I just picked up some sunline super natural. I haven't tried it yet. I really like suffix but decided to try this out.
Trilene XL. It's a good manageable line.
Big game or stren cheap and easy to find.

I have Maxima and Vicious (it was in a lucky tackle box) Highly thinking about going to sunline. I just switched to their FX2 braid about a month ago and I love that stuff. Line memory is a issue for me. Drives me insane. Also I noticed between the two they are both 12lb test and the maxima is much thicker than the vicious.
Mono - Trilene Big Game. A little thick per lb. but tough as nails and works well on spinning gear.
Co-Polymer - Yo-Zuri Hybrid. My favorite all around line.
Trilene XT 17 pound test, I do not break off on snags, I straighten hooks!

Yep
Berkley Big Game cuz I'm a cheap skate. I put some on as a leader for 50# braid the other night so I could break off if I needed to. And I straightened a Gamakatsu 5/0 EWG hook getting it unstuck. Good enough for me.
Also, because I'm a cheapskate, I like BPS's brand mono. It's a bit stretchy compared to premium brands. But there are times you can use that to your advantage.
And I think Trilene XT is the bomb.

Last time I bought Stren I was very disappointed. And I was faithful customer. It's gotten lower quality than most store brands now, IMO.
Trilene XL. I have not lost a fish or a bait on the XL.
I've been using trilene big game and xt for my mono lately and don't have a complaint yet
I really like good old original stren. It has good strength and little memory when some KVD L and L is applied liberally. For higher tests though (14 and over) I prefer Suffix Elite, it's more naturally limp and still has good strength.
I don't use mono for crankbaits anymore, but when I did, it was Original Stren. I still have maybe 150yrds. left on a bulk spool that I use mainly for my topwater reel and leaders for my C-rigs.
Big Game
Seagur Senshi and Trilene XL.
Senshi is great for cranks and I use Trilene XL for just about everything.
What do you guys use for cranking? Flouro?

people were saying they didn't use mono for cranking that's what I asked that.
I used Berkley 12 lb Big Game mono for crankbaits for decades and changed to Sunline Deifer Armilo Nylon 13 lb, it's the same diameter as Big Game 10 lb., .012. Smaller dia allows the deep divers to dive deeper!
Tom
I use 12 lb big game as well for deep cranking. Been looking at defier for a long time, haven't gotten the guts to buy a spool yet.On 7/19/2015 at 5:05 AM, WRB said:I used Berkley 12 lb Big Game mono for crankbaits for decades and changed to Sunline Deifer Armilo Nylon 13 lb, it's the same diameter as Big Game 10 lb., .012. Trilene 6 lb XL smooth. Only times I use mono anymore is when I want long casting distance.

I have been using the Sunline Deifer Armilo in 13,17, 20 & 24 & really like it based on your recommendation. Thanks Tom.
I have stuck with Trilene XT. Never gave me any reason to leave.
I have tried Sufix Siege recently and like it but I just stick to my XT.
I've been using the Cajun red mono lately, over all I cannot really say anything against it, I can cast a mile with it and the line has nonexistent memory which is amazing for how cheap a spool of line is.
The only reason I would switch to something else would be to try something new.
That's a lot of line!On 7/16/2015 at 10:04 AM, A-Jay said:Maxima Ultragreen premium copolymer monofilament and Stren Magnaflex ~

Trilene XT green for me.
P-Line FlouroClear on my spinning tackle.
Yozuri hybrid #8 and sunline supernatural also in #8
Grew up using XL. Still use some. Main reason for switching was to try other lines. Sufix Elite is another great line for low memory. I've got bigger spools of Big Game, Red Cast and AN40 plus quite a few of the 330yd spools of Siege. I prefer Siege and Red Cast to Big Game when it comes to low memory. Its toughness gives it a little more memory compared to the other two. However, once good and wet it works great. Siege coils on the water at first after sitting awhile, but it doesn't seem to coil on the reel those first few casts like Big Game does. The AN40 is a line I just started using so no concrete opinion yet, but so far I like it. I also like Super Natural. Never tried the high dollar lines. Hard to spend that kind of money when the low cost lines work so well. However, the same thing can be said about rods and reels, and that hasn't stopped me from using ones costing more than really necessary. So guess I eventually will try some of the top tier (price wise) lines.
Grew up using Stren... Dad was a duPont employee, and his plant was one of the ones where the mono was made. When we fished salt water in the Delaware Bay, we used 14lb *yellow* Stren. ("If it breaks 14lb Stren, I don't want it in our boat.")
Now use Trilene XL after a couple of bad run-ins with Stren when I started fishing again as an adult. Admittedly, the bad stuff was probably just due to line that had sat on the shelf for too long, but...
I'm still one of those traditionalists... I fish spinning tackle only, all strung with mono. 2lb for my UL trout/panfish setup, 6lb for my M soft plastics rod, and 12lb for my MH jig rod.
I use a lot of Sunline Fluoro and like it.
I have a lot of respect for Tom's suggestions so I'll get some Sunline Defier.
At present I have bulk spool of 3,000 yards of Silver Thread and bulk spool of Yozuri Hybrid 6lb.
Izorline is pretty nice too for cranking. 12lb test.
Big Game

I have a reel spooled with 20lb Sniper FC for cranks/vibrating swim jigs.
Mono: Trilene XT
Co-Polymer: Yo-Zuri Hybrid
These lines stretch the least of any non-braid lines I've tested, and they are so tough from an abrasion standpoint.
