Paging Daiwa Guys 2024

fishing user avatardam0007 reply :

So I'm considering doing the full conversion to Daiwa all in one order from JLS the day the Zillion HLC releases. Really debating on which reels to go with would love for you guys that are more familiar with Daiwas various models to chime in. All I'm thinking right now is do a couple Steez and the rest Zillions but maybe some of their other models might be better. Here's what I need them for:

 Casting:

Fury 705CB - Squarebills - Tat 5.5:1 'Crazy Cranker'
Fury 735C - Frogs - Tat 6.3:1
Fury 795SB - A Rig - Tat HD JDM 6.3:1
Savvy 663C - Flukes - Tat Type R 6.3:1
Champ 684CB - Jerkbaits -
Champ 685CB - Topwater -
Champ 704CB - 4-8ft cranks -
Champ 705CB - 10-18ft cranks -
Champ 702C - 3/16oz Jig -
Champ 703C - 3/8-1/2oz T Rig -
Champ 734C - SpinnBuzzChat -
ChampX 703C - 3/8-1/2oz Jig -
ChampX 743C - Keitechs -
ChampX 744C - C Rig - Zillion TW HLC
Spinning:
Custom 1 - Shakey Head - Ballistic 2500ex
Custom 2 - Drop Shot - Ballistic 2000ex

Sounds expensive and fun.  Along with steez and zillions I would also grab a couple of alphas sv's especially for jerk bait and top water duty.  I throw x rap8 and pop r nicely.

Edit:. Are you only buying new or would you add some classics like tdz?  I highly recommend tdz r+, TD ito, etc.  I feel like every daiwa fan needs at least one.

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

Wow.  You are putting together some very nice combos.  Wish I could help.  I've got quite a few Daiwas, but the newest are the PXL Type R and Alphas SV105.  My Zillions are the older models.  Can't afford a Steez.  From reading the TT review of the Zillion TWS, I would limit it to the same weight lures as my older Zillions.....3/8 oz. and up.

Although I seem to be the only one not impressed with the Alphas SV, I would still recommend it as an alternative to the much more expensive Steez for rods such as the 703C, 684CB and 685CB.  Either I got one that doesn't perform up to snuff or I don't know how to use it properly.   Too many others love it.

I am getting so I like faster ratios.  The cranks are probably the only rods I would prefer slower ratios on.

Like I said, I have no experience with a Steez or Zillion TWS, so my comments are simply personal preference and impressions formed from my reading.  Be sure to let us know what you decide on and how each combo works for you.

Cool thanks I'll look into the Alphas I'll throw in there if stay with a mix of Daiwas and Shimanos I'll keep my Scorpion 1001XTs for the 684 and 685 and Met XG for the 743.

The "new" older zillion is the 103 now??? I think, but I'm going all JDM I don't see it available. Don't plan on going the used route either. Just gonna do it all in 1 shot. Then I'll have like 20 Shimanos for sale if I don't keep a few. Lol SS SV looks like a good alternative for a couple set ups. It's getting really confusing.

Will get rid of some of the definitely but it's up in the site if I get rid of all of them. Idk the Daiwas are impressing the hell outta me. Really like their performance on the water. Nothing bad to say about Shimano though.

Wow, you're talking close to $4000 in reels for your casting rods.

Must be nice to be able to spend money like that.

If I spent even half that on some reels my wife would kick me out

you must either be single or rich.....or both

I have found that spending thousands on reels has nothing to do with being rich, at least for me lol.

Any of those left handed? If so contact me,  might be interested.

My zillion tws I have cast like a dream and is butter smooth.  I'm sure you couldn't go wrong with the new ones.

All left handed anything from older citicas to newer metaniums. I'm waiting to get everything in and fish before I go selling all my stuff off. If for some reason I don't like something then I'll be stuck with having to buy reels I already had again. So plan is get Daiwas, fish them then determine which to sell.

I would be looking for some TDZ type R + and drop some 7:1 gears in them. Love that reel.  I buy everyone I come across. I'd look at the Steez SV and 103SV. It will cover pretty much everything you need.

Side note, I'm not sure if you have used any of the rods you've ordered yet since switching to all Dobyns but, personally, there's 5-6 on there I think you will feel isn't nearly enough rod for what you are intending to use them for. If you have and like them,..different strokes.

Funny you said that about the Steez I just scored a Megabass IS71 Hyper Lariat for a great deal. First MB reel. Waiting till I get this new Zillion in and see how I like it before I go any farther.

Yeah all the rods are perfect only one more I need is a legit flipping stick. Like a 795 or something.

Champ 704CB - 4-8ft cranks -
i would use the 705cb or cb glass here

Champ 705CB - 10-18ft cranks -
100% the 764 or 805 would be better. 705 is not a good deep diving rod.

Champ 703C - 3/8-1/2oz T Rig - personally feel your 2 powers light here. I use the dx745 for these. 703 is a senko rod and will be incredibly overloaded .

ChampX 703C - 3/8-1/2oz Jig - same as above ten fold.

ChampX 744C - C Rig - be fine at 1/2oz or less. Anything over id opt for the champ 765 or dx 745

The 704 glass has been good for throwing those little bandit cranks that weigh next to nothing. In selling this Rod tho if I get what I'm asking for it. Just not catching enough quality fish on the small stuff to justify keeping it. The 705 has been pretty much DT10-16 and Pin Jack dedicated. I do need a 765 the beast hunters I throw do over power this Rod. Do you think that would be good or the 764? They gave Paul his own signature Rod I may actually check that out but I think it's a 8 footer.

the 2 703s have been perfect for close quarters pitching for me especially the DX. Skipping around laydowns and docks. So used to the 7'1" *** mh/XF that this has taken some getting used to. The other one has been good for pitching the light stuff like t rigged rage bugs and craws.

The 744 I've been throwing 3/4oz c Rigs with no issue. Me and Rich we're going back n forth  for a while on what would work for me. This is what I ended up with.

Hard to say which you would prefer. You definitely use lighter powered rods than what is traditionally used.

Lol yeah I agree.

So playing around with the list moving things around how does this look so far. The 2 with * are rods I'm gonna be ordering. All the reels in bold are what I just ordered this past week. Minus the zillion HLC I pre ordered.

Casting:

Fury 705CB - Squarebills - Tat 5.5:1 'Crazy Cranker'
Fury 735C - Frogs - Tatula Tactical 8.1:1

Savvy 663C - Flukes - Tatula Type R 6.3:1
Champ 684CB - Jerkbaits - Scorpion 1001XT
Champ 685CB - Topwater - Scorpion 1001XT
Champ 704CB Glass - 4-8ft cranks - Chronarch 201E6
Champ 705CB - 8-12ft cranks - Chronarch 201E5
*Champ 765CB - 14ft+ cranks - Chronarch 201E5
Champ XP 734C - SpinBuzzChat - Chronarch 201E7
Champ 702C - 3/16oz Jig - Tatula 6.3:1
Champ 703C - 3/8-1/2oz T Rig - Tatula 6.3:1
DC HP 703C - 3/8-1/2oz Jig - Zillion SV 9.1:1
DX HP 743C - Keitechs - Tatula HLC
DX HP 744C - C Rig - Zillion TW HLC
*DX HP 795Flip - Flipping - IS71
Spinning:
Custom 1 - Shakey Head - Ballistic 2500ex
Custom 2 - Drop Shot - Ballistic 2000ex

the 702 and 703 might upgrade those to 2 more of the zillion SV if I'm impressed with it. Or maybe save a buck and grab 2 Tat CTs. The Scorps and Chronarchs can hold me over as from this point in the season I won't be throwing those for awhile minus topwater.

(1) Citica 201G6

(1) Met XG

Gimmicky and, up until relatively recently, faulty. I should note that I am a four fingers in front of the trigger palmer and wide-nose reels don't agree with that.

Yeah bro when I was using the ** rods. The reel seat was not working for me with the tats. Now with the standard reel seats in my new rods have no issue how I palm. I hear your gripe brother!

I really like my alphas sv. It is much smaller than my Tatula type r. It can be a little finicky to dial in at first but does well after you get used to it.

fishing user avatarYudo1 reply :

Alphas sv is about the same size as the scorpion xt.  The 7.2 gear model makes a great jerk bait/top water reel and it will even throw the little x rap 8's.

I am not sure about why but I would tend to agree with that statement. My Alphas SV 105 appeared to have a sticky inductor when I got it. I followed a tip from a friend about lightly oiling something around that inductor (can't recall what at the moment) and haven't had a problem since. It casts very controlled and pretty far for baits under 3/8. I use mine for jerkbaits, finesse jigs, and small plastics. One of the best palming reels out there and relatively light as well.

fishing user avatarAngry John reply :

So this is a huge move so I hate to piecemill you.  I have and love the champ 764 randy cranking rod and its a special rod.  Short the larger cranks like the Norman dd22 and larger its great.  The randy 805 works for the larger baits but I don't use those and don't have that rod.  Gary helped me out on this rod and I am so happy I called.

You'll love that dx795. Good addition. Awesome flipping/punching rod.

You may want to try spinnerbaits/buzz/chatter on a 3 power. I typically prefer a heavier powered rod and use th 3 powers for all those techniques . Lots like a 4 though.

looks good though!

Still can't believe you're using the 3 power for 1/2oz jigs amd trigs.  You crazy.

I was thinking about that with the 702 for the DX702 but I heard there's no where near the backbone of the 702 I have. The 742 is too long for those little thing. I also throw little cabin creeks on that Rod with 1/4oz heads.

I was using the 703C for spin buzz chat but wanted a full grip and Rich convinced me the 734 is the way to go. So far it's been killer for the 1/2oz Super Eruptions.

Well for 2 years was using the *** 7'1" MH/XF for jigs. It was just a hair stiffer than the DX 703.

Another option I was thinking grab a Fury 733 or 734 for spin buzz chat. And promote the champ 734 to Trig duty. Do the Zil HLC for the DX 744. I'd then have both covered rather than a Rod sharing duties.

I'm almost there thank God!

Edit*

some buddies telling me the IS71 is not gonna be a good flippin/punchin reel. Ahh idk prob gonna have to move some things around. Might end up with a SV103 then.... Dam

I would swap your champ 702 for the dx742c HP. I just got one and plan on getting another. Sweet rod.

You crazy.

Did a little revision
