Good Heavy Rod For Cheap? 2024

fishing user avatarComartin reply :

I'm looking for a heavy atleast 7.5 foot rod for pretty cheap. Looking for under 80$. If anyone could help that would be great.

fishing user avatarBlues19 reply :

Ive been looking at purchasing one of these as well.  I have been looking at the Lews American Hero.  It is $69.99

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

Take a look at the Berkley Lightning Shock Rods. I just picked one up and it looks pretty decent for the money. Check Walmarts online for the best prices. And keep checking every couple of days as the price go up and go down quickly. And that goes for just about any rod you want to pick up. Walmarts online has quite a selection.

fishing user avatargeorgeyew reply :

I agree with the post above. The Berkley Lightning Shock has a 7'6 Heavy rod in their line. I've felt it. It is heavy duty and seems almost unbreakable.

Vendetta 2 has a 7'6" heavy. Good rod for the money.

fishing user avatarDockhead reply :

Don't forget to check the flea market forum.

Abu Veritas 1 on clearance at GM for 69.97.  Picked up a heavy today for a frog stick

fishing user avatarfisherrw reply :

A Powell deisel is good or a shock

fishing user avatarkschultz76 reply :

Check out the Daiwa Lexas on sale for $49 at Gander Mountain. I can't vouch for them, but have heard enough good feedback that I ordered two of them myself. I believe that had one that meets your requirements. Also you get a $10 egift card back on it, and if you get your total over $50 shipping is free. Also there's a coupon code of gmt5 you can use.

Oh and according to Daiwas website the rods have 5 yr warranty.

So if budget is really important might be worth a shot.

BPS extreme 7'6" Heavy

On sale right now for 79.97. Pretty darn good bang for the buck.

fishing user avatarPoolshark reply :

I own a 76 heavy extreme and like it for flipping cover. I think it is a solid choice.

fishing user avatarSonik reply :

Cabelas still had their ZX rods on sale for $69. I believe they have a 7'11".

fishing user avatarMemphisFF reply :

Can find a Quantum Tour Tactical 7'6" on Ebay anywhere from 49.99-80.00.  Not to bad for a $130 rod and they have nice components.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

I do a lot of my flipping and punching with a 7'6" H Abu Vendetta, I love that rod, and the Vendetta line in general. I replaced a 7'11" St Croix Mojo with it, and while the Mojo was a nice rod, the Vendetta, is lighter and better balanced which really helps when flipping for 8-12 hours a day which I often do.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I have a 7' 3" H/F and 7' 6" H/F Ethos, didn't spend $50 on either.

fishing user avatarSanka629 reply :

I like my 7 3 heavy Ethos.

fishing user avatarPAGreg reply :

Another 7'6" H Vendetta here. Paid $65 for it and lean on it hard without having to feel bad if it were to break.

fishing user avatarSonik reply :

I think the Cabelas Fish Eagle 50 line of rods will be on sale for $45 on Thursday. I hear good things about them.

fishing user avatarHardcoreBassin reply :

A few people have mentioned it already.  I've brought it up on another thread a month or so back as well.  The Lightnin Shock rod, for the price, is one hell of a deal.  I picked mine up at my local Walmart for $26.  If budget is really tight, but you need something in a pinch, I'd definitely get a Lightning Shock.  It has a nice stiff backbone with the perfect amount of tip to skip jigs under docks.  To top it off, its a pretty nice looking rod.  I know that matters to a lot of people.  In a pinch I bought this rod ($26) and paired it with an Abu Silver Max2 ($45).  It is the least expensive set-up I have, but one of my faves.

Hope this helps!

I just received the 7'1" Heavy/xfast Daiwa Lexa from Gander today. Build quality is good, a few of the wraps don't line up perfectly where they meet, and the tip definitely takes a bit of a bend to the right but not awful. It feels like a very stiff blank and a pretty stiff tip just testing it out. I haven't been able to cast it yet. With a Curado I mounted it balances about 1.5"'in front of the locking nut.

It doesn't feel like it holds a candle to my more expensive rods, and not sure I'd want to pay $100 full price for it. But for the actual $35 dollars out of pocket it cost me in the end I'm pretty pleased. It should work ok for a heavy cover, heave jig/trig rod for guests or as a spare.

Hopefully I will get to give it a whirl casting soon.

Edit: quick update just spent some time out in the yard test casting and pitching the rod. Had a BPS PQS mounted spooled with 832 in 50lb. Fasted and pitched nicely with a strike king rage Tail toad and 5/0 hook. It didn't feel as stiff casting at all and was getting nice accurate roll casts. Haven't really fished it yet but I'm pretty pleased right now.

Per the sale ad I got earlier this week, their "Spring Great Outdoor Days" run March 12 through April 6. 30% off other Cabelas rods too so the Crankshaft will go back on sale and the ZX stays on sale. And $60 for Fenwick Silverhawks.

fishing user avatarDCales84 reply :

I used my LR Shock 7'6" some last year and its good for throwing an a-rig or a frog in the nasty stuff. Its not great by any means but its affordable. If your going to use a heavy action often spend the extra money and get something nicer as deals are still out there and you could possibly find a vendetta or even a 1st gen veritas floating around someplace. Both of the abu models I listed are lighter and balance better in my opinion from what i've seen when checking them out in person.

fishing user avatarb_spill reply :

I am interested in buying a 7' to 7'6" Heavy with fast action.  I really like the TFO Tactical but was wondering if there were any others that would be recommended for maybe cheaper.  I don't really want to spend over $150.

fishing user avatarMemphisFF reply :

***... Some don't like the grip though I love my 7'3 heavy and 7'1 mh
