Which reel should I choose? 2025

fishing user avatargkeniston reply :

Which one would you buy to put on a 7'2" Carrot Stix drop shot rod?

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

I voted Stradic, only cuz I'm a Die Hard Sheemano fan.. ;D

And it's all Muddy's fault..lol  jk.

fishing user avatarSDoolittle reply :

Tackle Warehouse has the Stradic Mg FB on sale for $129 vs $239 for the Quantum TE PTiB. I too am a die hard Shimano guy, but even if I wasn't I think I'd still go with the Stradic. :o

You are confusing me with the guy with the 2 big smallies in his avatar AKA ROADWARRIOR

fishing user avatargkeniston reply :

So, am I wrong in saying that the Shimano is probably the way you all would recommend that I go?

fishing user avatarLAO162 reply :

I abstained from voting because I have different biases when it comes to spinning reels :o  However, I think I'd be very satisfied with either of your choices.

fishing user avatargkeniston reply :

Not to sound rude, but what does that mean? How are you biased?  Do you work for one of those companies and are you about to spill some insider information that would sway my choice drastically in one way or another?  Or do you just not like spinning reels and only use spincast, and casting tackle?  Not that there is anything wrong with that.  I prefer casting tackle myself, but thin line smallies are easier with spinning gear.

fishing user avataruicdent11 reply :

I know it is not up there, but my vote is a Daiwa Sol. Had a new Stradic and sold it in favor of the Daiwa. I found two online for $120 and it is comparable to what you are looking for. Just my $.02

fishing user avatarmidnighthrasher reply :

Shimano all the way!!!

Nope..I ain't confusing you at all..lol

Look, most spinning reels toady are for the most part all good, Diawa, Pfluger, ect..as long as you don'y but the Cheap ones , you'll be o.k

Some of us have just seen the light when it comes to inovation and a great warranty, hence we chose the Shimano. ;D

fishing user avatarChiCityBasser reply :

My vote is for the Quantum reel. I have a Shimano Sahara and it's a great reel but compared to my Quantum Kinetic PTI-B the Quantum is a better reel JMO. It's every bit as smooth and one of my go to reels after my Quantum Catalyst PTI-A

Quantum

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

My reel selection is based on not the best reel, but the best reel for my particular use.

Inshore use stradic all the way, good drag, light, durable stands up to harsh conditions, oil port, just a really good reel.

Freshwater, any reel $75-$100 will serve you well, I size my reel according to my target species. For the most part the conditions are tame, just wind to deal with, little sand and no salt spray, they all work great.

fishing user avatarLAO162 reply :

Currently, I favor Daiwa spinning reels.  The Tierra (and evel Exceler) are great values.  They have fantastic line distance and casting distance.  I have not used the MG version of the Stradic,  but FOR ME, the Tierra consistently outperforms my Stradic FH.  The 1/2 oz. weight savings does not excite me as a reason for getting the MG (vs the standard Stradic).  The Quantum (on paper) seems heavy to me.

I did not want to throw a different brand into the mix because it was not part of the poll.  Also, I had not used the particular models you asked about.  However, I have used and respected Shimano reels for more than 25 years and my recent experience with Quantum has been positive.  Unless you have extensive time on the water and have very specific needs, I believe you would be pleased with either of your selection (The point of my original post).  Your choice here is to go with a classic like the Stradic or to take a chance as an early adopter.  Cheers!

OK, I am ready for the bashing.

There is nothing better than a Quantum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He means there is nothing better then a Daiwa.. just a small typo lol! JK

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Shimano.  ;D

fishing user avatarBenoBreath reply :

Stradic 2500 !

fishing user avatargkeniston reply :

I just received my new Stradic 2500 from tackle warehouse.  What a reel!!  All I can say is tomorrow cant come soon enough.  I have paired it with my new 7'2" Carrot Stix spinning rod and I cant wait to slam some smallies!! Should be a post spawn situation so wish me luck...  I need to locate some structure between deep water and the spawning flats.

fishing user avatargkeniston reply :

Not that I think this forum is biased or anything, but thanks for the help!  Are there any quantum fans here?

no,they're all on hold with quantum customer service still. ;D

fishing user avataruicdent11 reply :

On hold.... I thought all you had to do was mail one in and they would send you a brand new one. They've taken the "trade up" program to a whole new level.  :o

fishing user avatarfishntime reply :

I was actually looking at buying a fuego, when I saw the TW had the Stradic on sale.   Just recieved it Wendsday and I mounted it on a major craft spinning rod.  It has yet to be fished, but I know that this reel will not disappoint.

I love the trade up program and kinda like taking my old chevy in and them just giving me a new one and nothing wrong with that to me at all.  :o:) :)

fishing user avatarCODbasser reply :

shimano is a better product than quantum...im basing this opinion on experience...i have 3 stradics, one of them i have had for more than 6 years and it still works great, its one of the 2000 models you cant get anymore, all of the shimano baitcasters i have are long lasting and reliable also...i have had 2 quantum spinning reels and two bait caster...on of the baitcasters is an accurist pt..when you cast it with a little bit heavier lure it sounds like the gears are going to strip out of it...i have an energy pt..it is in good working condition but that weird looking color changing coating the put on them has mostly peeled off..looks like crap...the spinning reels have been descent i guess...i just trust shimano, i have never had any problems out of any or there reels and some of them have been abused...

fishing user avatarstryk9 reply :

i have the quantum in a 10 and the 2500 stradic. while both reels are nice and the quantum has the "unbreakable bail" i would go with the stradic. i love my stradic and would never part with it. smoother and better drag in my opinion.

fishing user avatarhjerk24 reply :

NEVER had a Bad Quantum product...EVER!

I don't buy too much Shimano stuff, so I am a bit Biased.

I'd try Shimano to see what they are like.

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

Once you do.....you'll never go back...lol

fishing user avatargkeniston reply :

Wow, the fist trip out with the new stradic was a success!  I still prefer fishing baitcasters, but I have to give this reel its props!  Silky smooth operation and  very light to boot.  I put 8lb trilene on it.  I brought in a 3lb large mouth without any trouble.  Now I just have to test its longevity.  Thanks for everyones help!

With proper maintenance, your new reel might last a lifetime.

Although I have given my reels away to friends over the years,

a Stradic 2000 that I bought in 1997 is still in use and performs

as well or better today than the first day out of the box. You will

not be disappointed.

8-)

fishing user avatarold bassman reply :

I have been fishing Shimano's and Quantum PT tour reels for years. All casting reels and have had no problem with either one My 15 year old son and I fish many tournaments and he fishes primarily with his Quantum PT tour and let me tell you he beats it up . It still works great. Quantum makes a fine product and if I got a deal on them vs. Shimano I would jump on them in a heart beat.
