What type of budget do you have for this set up?

What type of depth and cover will you be fishing?

I have 2 rods that I really like for this technique. First is 7'2 ML cumara spinning rod and 6'9 ML fenwick elite tech spinning rod. These are great choices when using 1/8-3/16 oz weights. Both rods are light, very sensitive, and can be round for under $130.

I would say depending upon budget look at a stradic CI4, stradic FJ, or a Phfleuger supreme or patriarch. Okuma is supposed to have a few light weight carbon spinning reels coming out that will retail for $100 and $140 that I am HIGHLY looking at.

I prefer to use the VMC dropshot hooks. It eliminates the need to tie a polamar knot. For most drop shot baits I prefer the size 1 or 2 hook. Simply nose hook the bait for most of your drop shot fishing and you are set. The action of the bait is second to none.

Tons of options for baits for this techniques. Tubes, zipper grubs, 4 and 6 inch worms, small minnow imitators, and sculpin baits are most common. For brands you can't go wrong with the roboworm brand. Straight tail worms, sculpin, and the zipper grub are some of my favorites. Keep it simple with color. Typically Aaron's magic is tough to beat in just about any conditions.

I prefer the longer vertical style weights over the round ball and tear drop style. Most of my fishing is done with 3/16 oz weights but I will go heavier or lighter at times.

When choosing a line 8# is pretty standard. I would use sunline sniper or seagar invisix on the spinning reel. With a good rod your sensitivity will be more than enough. If your rod lacks feel you may opt for braid and a floro leader.

im fishing in light cover ( brush piles and dock and bait holding points) ive never fished fluacarbon what are the benefits i like fishing mono whats a good budget flurocarbon my budget is around 200 for my drop shotting setup any good one for that price

I also like the Fenwick elite tech mxf 6'9 (ESMC69M-XF). I also Use a St. Croix Legend Tournament Bass medium fast 7ft. Sometimes I like the slower tip. Just feels better.

I use a Pfleuger Patriarch 9530 with Sunline Finesse FC 6-7lb

Get yourself some VMC Spin Shot hooks size 1 and I personally think the best lure is the Z-man Finesse worm 4", for me anyway. They last forever and have a great action that even the most stubborn bass will at least take a look at.

When you fish it cast it out and pay attention on the fall because that's when a lot of bites will come. You won't necessarily feel those bites but you'll see your line twitch/move etc. When it hits the bottom give it about 10-20 seconds before you move it any. A lot of times a bass will follow it down and stare at it and the natural movement of the bait will make them bite it. If you don't feel a fish on after that do a couple light twitches and let it sit still again. Then drag it slowly until you feel it hit some piece of cover and stop bringing it in. Twitch it a couple times, wait, then move on.

Don't be afraid to cast it far either =0)

Don't feel like you've got to limit yourself to spinning gear. I drop shot with bait casting gear much more often than spinning gear. Drop shot is just another style of bait presentation - nor more - no less. You can bubba it up or go light/finesse however you choose.

When I'm fishing around stumps, brush piles, tree roots, etc, I like a heavier line and rod that I can lean on the fish and get it up and out of the cover. 20 lb abrazax is the line I use more often than not.

That being said, next year I'm going to experiment with spinning gear more on drop shot applications, at least that is my current plan.

Never used the HMG.

Fluorocarbon is pretty much invisible and very sensitive (also sinks). You can use straight fuoro or a braid with fluoro leader

Back to your setup here... with the given budget in mind and the 20% off black Friday sales you should be able to score and elite tech rod for around $100. If you want the cumara TW has it for $129 and I believe they would give you 20% if you call them. For your reel the president is very solid. It can be had for around $60+/- and I would look for one that holds 130 yards of 8#. Floro is more sensitive, stronger, and more abrasion resistant than mono when looking at premium floro lines. Invisix and sniper are about $20 a spool. That should put you right around your budget.

Very false. I have lost less than 5 fish this year due to break offs. Keep in mind I have caught around 700+ bass this year with the biggest being 6.5 lbs. I have straightened hooks before the line would brake. I am a huge fan of floro over braid and mono for bottom contact baits.

There may be other sales that will occur around Christmas or New Years but they haven't been announced yet and wont until it gets much closer. I don't drop shot after sunset so I can't speak for its effectiveness or lack there of.

Now I love braid for DS, you don't fish a DS on a slack line, so the "advantage" that fluoro "has" is a moot point, braid is just as sensitive. Braid will NOT give you line twist and loops, huge advantage there, just use ~20lb braid of your choice, a nice tiny SPRO swivel and make leaders up out of flouro. I pre-tie a dozen leaders in various length droppers and hook sizes and load them on this: http://www.cabelas.c...4620680��Inside the roll I put a selection of weights and keep everything nice and self contained. Saves a ton of time re-tying on a rocking boat. Lots of tournament guys are going this route.

On the fall the line will be semi-slack, so there is advantage to using fluorocarbon there. Nothing wrong with using braid though. The idea of having pre-tied leaders is nice. It definitely will save you loads of time. Even if you are not tournament fishing, it is still nice to be able to get more casts and to maximize your actual fishing time. Plus the depth adjustments can be helpful to find out what level the bass are at.

Yes, that is an excellent combo. Very light and sensitive. I plan on getting this one myself.

A lot of members have given you excellent information regarding this technique. The Elite Tech Smallmouth is definitely an underrated rod and would serve you nicely. You can use a variety of plastics. With the advice of Kickerfish I am going to be making the switch to Roboworm products. I heard they float well and provide good action. Also, the colors are very interesting and unique.

If you search youtube for bassresource videos. Glenn has some great tips and advice on the drop shot that puts the style into perspective. Glenn gives an excellent perspective about the types of baits and hooks you can use and he does not push products at all. Also, he shows how to fish the rig. BEWARE though, its envious to see how many fish he catches in his videos.
