What Causes That Sawing Sound? 2025

fishing user avatarrockchalk06 reply :

I was watching some reruns of Zona and the Major League Fishing and the guys using braid get that weird high pitched sawing sound.

What causes that? Is that the reel or the braid on the guides? Does it tear something up or put extra wear on anything.

I only noticed it when they laid the wood to em on the hook set though.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Added sound effect.  They do that on many fishing shows.  It's irritating.  I once saw a guy catch a fish using a Curado, and when it took drag, it pinged like a spinning reel, lol.

Ah gotcha! I heard that and my first thought was, what just got tore up.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

There's another show, I think it's Joe Thomas', where they use fluorocarbon, and there's this weird, zinging noise theye use on the hookset.  Really bugs me, sounds more like plucking the line than any sound I've heard making a hookset.

fishing user avatarlmbfisherman reply :

I wondered the same thing, thanks for clearing that up.  I'm like mine doesn't sound like that!

fishing user avatarDiggy reply :

I love the Japanese vids, every hookset = techno music and low frequency grunts

You have to love TV.  I shouldn't be surprised but I did learn something new today.  I wonder how many of those catches are also "real" sometimes.  I know photographs can be edited quite significantly.  My wife is a professional photographer and is a whiz with photoshop.

One of these days I am going to ask her to photoshop me with a "50lb" Largemouth the size if a baby tuna.

LOL

Hmmm i have some rods that when a big fish is hooked like 5+lbs the line will make a ping sound on the guides. especially if it makes a hard run.

fishing user avatariabass8 reply :

Generally "Sawing" noise you hear is from braided line on recoils. it can happen in regular guides as well. There are added sounds to shows though.

lol i wouldnt doubt it cause i catch a lot of fish but wow i tried to make a fishing show a 30 min one and good lord in the 30 mins without showing all the casts needed to catch one it took like 8 or more hours of footage easily and still i couldnt fill the 30 mins lol...takes a min or 2 max to reel in a decent size fish and the small ones even less thats why they play with the fish for 5 mins back and forth hahaha

fishing user avatarThe Next KVD reply :

Recoil guides are bad for making noise with braid, but not as loud as you hear on the TV shows.

i use braid on recoils and it makes no noise.use a smooth 8 strand braid and most of the noise goes away.right now i use powerpro super slick. imho most of the noise is from the line guide.

Heck recoils make noise with fluoro. You must not be using recoils if you think they dont make noise

fishing user avatarGrantman83 reply :

Every time Todd Faircloth sets the hook it with braid in MLF it creates it is super high pitched and loud.  I always wondered if it was his reels or exra sound.  He was obviously using Shimano stuff.  Seems lame to add a sound over that with all the other stuff they could do to improve a show lol.

fishing user avatarKoofy Smacker reply :

I do know that when I really lay into a fish in heavy vegetation with braid it makes a squealing sound on the guides and the vegetation as well. Any wind also adds to the "whistle" tones it makes

I agree some brands of braid don't make much noise if any with recoils. There are other braids though that no matter what make a sawing noise on recoils. i.e suffix performance braid is probably the worst. heavier # tests of regular PP do as well. The higher # test you go ( as i'm sure you're aware) the worse the noise gets.

fishing user avatarBrian Needham reply :

the Joe Thomas show adds a "zing" with every hookset.

but the Faircloth hooksets and this seasons of major league fishing is just good ole singing braid.

thats why i use 8 strand braids.regular powerpro is noisey and i hate that sound.powerpro super slick is nice and quiet.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

I don't know about tv shows because I don't watch them, but in real life some braids do make a sawing noise.  I don't find it to be annoying and pay little attention to it, I know some people are bothered.  Holding your rod at a different angle seems to remove some of the noise, I use 10-15 or 20#.  Knowing what is causing the noise and seeing that no damage is done, just leaves me with 1 less thing to be concerned about.  On one set up I'm using 12# super cast, this is my heaviest bass line, this line is very smooth and quite.

It sounds like a fat chick running around in corduroy pants.

excuse me,they are recoils and they don't make noise.

fishing user avatarsmalljaw67 reply :

That isn't added sound you hear, it is sensitive microphones picking it up and I hear the same sound when I fish with a friend of mine. When he has 16lb flouro on a reel and he has the drag locked down and sets on a good fish, the first time there is a direction change of the rod or the fish moving to the side on the tight line make a "twing" sound like an out of tune guitar string. Casting with 30lb power pro makes a little noise but not much but when he has that 65# braid on it is noisey and his GLX is the older variety without the recoils.
