I like my BPS pro qualifier baitcasters a lot, and my 6'6 medium bps extreme spinning rod is awesome.

I have Pro Qualifiers, Carbonlites (black finish) and Crankin Sticks and I've been very satisfied with all of them. They are all great values, especially when on sale.
Any particular rod/reel you were looking at?

Seems like as long as you stick towards the higher ends of their lineups it's all pretty decent.

Reels - Be careful. They have a tendency to break.
Rods - Outstanding. You can't go wrong with the Extreme or Cranking Stick lines.
Best Rods and Reels - Try Susquehanna Tackle for their input and of course, Delaware Valley Tackle to find out if they can make a specific rod for your needs.

Pretty much "average" at every pricing point, but a good value when they are on sale and that happens regularly.
The other issue is inconsistency. Closely inspect your purchase and exchange the gear if it is not PERFECT. The BPS warranty is great and over-the-counter for house brands. Don't be shy.

Good quality-value but only when they are on sale. Usually when they have the Spring fishing sale is the best time to buy. Do not like their spinning reels at all. The Pro Qualifier is a nice bait aster for entry level. Have 2 old carbon lite rods ( the black ones) and I like them a lot. They are very sensitive. Not St Croix but again, a good entry level.

I own two Pro Qualifiers and a Johnny Morris bait caster. All are well built and have put up with my 'learning curve'. All three went to Delaware Valley Tackle for cleanings and super-tuning. Mike upgraded the Pro Qualifiers' drags. I called them a Chevy Nova in another post: they're not fancy, are reliable, and a great value.

The reels are ok but weren't my favorites. On sale or used, which can be found often, the rods are an amazing value. A lot of performance for not a lot of bucks. I love all of my BPS rods.

I own 3 of the black model carbonlites, one casting, 2 spinning and a crankin stick, love these rods and they work great. I also have a Pro Qualifier tournemnent reel that is on my crankin stick, I can cast super light lures far with no issues. Stick to higher end models and you will love them.

As far as rods go, i would only buy in store. Take a reel with you also,to see how the rod feels with your reel. The only ones id buy are bionic blade,extreme or cranking series. I still use a few of bps pitchin sticks made years ago. Buy in store and inspect closely.

I don't use them anymore, but there top line baitcaster used to be a good buy when they were on sale. Their rods again only experience is with older rods, and yes the Burgundy blank Bionics blade's were heavy, but decent sensitivity and nearly as durable as a ugly stick, the Extreme series was better, when I bought mine was on buy 2 get one free sales,, That was 20 years ago and the grandkids still use em, and them are pretty good rods for starters,, in my book I would probably recommend a St Croix Premier instead of any other rod in it's price range, anything less than that price point today I wouldn't know about,,,,,

Got the new white Carbonlite reel for $89 during the Spring sale with a trade-in. Its a great buy for that. But I agree that you want to open the box and check out several before picking one. There are some inconsistencies in smoothness. Anything below the PQ is pretty cheaply made.

the pro qualifier is a great bargain when on sale. someone did a crazy in depth review on that reel on this site (i can't remember who, maybe goose). basically stood the test of time over and over!
and as RW said, inspect closely and return if you feel it necessary. BPS is great about taking returned merchandise.

Buying from either major house brand like Cabs or BPS is simple, purchase what you're interested in and if you don't like it you can easily return it.

...and the PQ Five-Year Challenge Test reel is still working for a living. It's not in the first-string any longer, but I caught a few fish with it this year. It's getting a bit long in the tooth but still mostly serviceable. The weak point in this reel is the brass brake drum. The link that RW posted has details about the wear that occurred over the five year test period.

Not to hijack, but what's going on with that St. Croix cork? Is that how their cork ages?

I have a few of their rods (older Crankin Stick, older Bionic Blade, and couple Tournament series and a few discontiuned Graphite Musky Rods that I still use for my large swimbaits) as well as a few of the Extreme Reels from 2012 and 4 of the Black Carbonlite reels (all baitcast). As for the reels, I'd say the higer up stuff is great. I have swapped most of my equipment to EXO's and Concepts, but I still use all 4 of my Carbonlites, and still use the rods without any issues.

I think the condition of the cork is appropriate for a rod that has been in and out of various car and boat rod racks hundreds of times, reeled in over 1,100 fish, caught fish on over 500 different days, has probably been on the water from 750 to 1,000 different days, and fished in all weather conditions from blazing sun and heat, to pouring rain, and including...
Just honest wear, now it's comfortable and "lived-in"...

Goose my friend it has been a while since I've fished in conditions like that! I have been there and done that, but I am to old to take the cold anymore. I am sitting here in my 70° living room with several layers on...
I also think that a little wear and dirt add character. I have more than a little wear on me!

I have used different BPS rods over the years, and have never had any issue with them. They have all been great. When I am ready to buy another BC reel I am going to look at the PQ, but I am going to hold on to my receipt.
