Hey everyone, looking for a moderate action and medium power rod for crankin. I will be throwing squarebills, medium divers, jerkbaits, and rattle traps. I will also have it paired on a bantam cuardo. Just wondering if anybody had suggestions on a rod for around 50 bucks.
I would be looking for a used rod, eBay may be your friend
×2 used.I assume you want a 7' rod.Berkley makes a 6'6" M for 50$ but it doesn't tell you the action.Parabolic maybe.(good for you if it is).Other than that Abu Garcia Vendetta had a 7'MM for 80 bucks.
You might want to check-out the Berkley Lightning Shock Rods

Abu vengeance rod is a good crankbait rod sensitive for such a bargain price.
Quantum Team KVD Cranking Rods ($80), and the *** Defy Black Crankin' Rod ($60) would be good options.
I just bought my 2nd KVD crank bait rod from amazon. A 7'4" mh For $80 free shipping. I paid $149 for my last one a few years ago. Love the rod.
If you go to FFO they have a Berkley AMP 6'6" M-MF rated 1/4oz to 3/4oz for $19.00. That maybe a little shorter than what you want but it will actually be a good length as an all purpose cranking rod since you intend to use jerkbaits and square bills. The other rod in your price range is the Berkley Lightning rod Shock, it has a moderate action and is a decent build for the price. If you want to creep up to $80, the Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0 Winch cranking rods or a Berkley E-Motion, either one will be a good buy.
Academy has a 7' MM composite cranker for $59, though they were on clearance for $25. It's a great rod at that price range.
What curtis9 said. I bought mine for $19 bucks on clearance. Impossible to beat at that price IMO. You might check Wal Mart. there's a thread running here that they have a lot of rods on clearance as well.
Walmart & Academy clearance sales are happening NOW. Go look there first. Over the years I've found that many of the rods that they put on sale are junky but on occasion, decent rods become available. Got to put the time in looking. Understand that for $50 you might have to compromise some. Me - I've been doing this for a few years now - I could compromise, but I don't feel like it. I think that lipless cranks - jerk baits - square bills & medium divers are different baits and different rods are necessary for peak performance with each bait. For instance, IMO, lipless cranks call for distance casting AND ability to set the hook at a distance - covering the water is important. Jerk baits - IMO I'm frequently fishing in semi windy to windy conditions, so I need to be able to throw into the wind or quarter into the wind as well as with the wind. To me this means spinning gear. I like a Medium rod with an extra fast tip for this (other guys I know like a more moderate tip, who is to know which is better?). Square Bills - I am generally bouncing them off hard cover (rocks & stumps). I like a rod & reel that will handle fairly stout line and will allow more accurate casting than I can get with the lipless crank rod. Medium diver cranks require lighter line to get down to maximum depth - I might be able to get away with the same rod that I use for square bills, but I'd have to change out line. Easier for me just to get a different rig for that application.
Figure out which bait you'll throw most and get a rod best suited for that bait and compromise on the others. Next year or a few months from now or whenever, get another rod that is best suited for whatever technique you want to focus on next. Over time you will build up an arsenal of rods properly suited for different presentations.

My Composite Cranker is a great Squarebill rod. Not so good for jerks.

I actually have one. There really nice for crank baits and are really sensitive that way you can feel on the bottom really well. What's best about them is they are affordable.
My favorite place when shopping for rods that are at a decent price would probably be Amazon or your local Academy.

The Amp is a bit whippy would be good for cranks up to 1/2oz I'd say. I had a couple yrs back. Hopefully they corrected the reel seat problem.
Powell Diesel 705G at TW for $69 right now... Or the previously mentioned Academy.

A Shock with anything but braid although it would work with the right drag setting. Wouldn't be my preference, tho.
Bass pro cranking sticks and Abu winch are going for $80. If you don't want to swing that it would be a lightning rod shock or an ugly stick pro lite for me. These would all serve you well...
just the other day, I saw a falcon Jason Christie squarebills rod for $14 at a local Walmart. That would have been your ticket. Look around online as well, lots of deals
Another vote for the H2O Express Composite Cranker from Academy. I use mine for squarebills to mid depth baits and it fishes them very well.

The Shock is made specifically for braid, that is why they all have moderate actions.

Hi Dan. That was my understanding, too. I'm not much of a braid user, and never on a rod I plan on dedicating to treble hook fishing. And I prefer a rod with a slower than Fast action....although I've often fished a MF with trebles and nylon lines. I realize some use braid for trebles including my brother-in-law on cheap spinning rods with lots of give. He does fine with that setup. The OP wants a rod for treble hooks. If he wanted a rod for single hook techniques then I would definitely consider braid on a Shock because of its slower action. For trebles, I'd want something else. That is just me. Others have their own opinion and it may (probably?) won't match mine.

We now have an Academy 5min from me. The Ethos rods are always sold out and go fast. Must be a good sign. The thing I've noticed is that their powers seem overrated a bit. Other than that the blanks seem very nice.

Not to sound condescending or arrogant....but you have no idea on what your talking about with the Shock rods. They excel at fishing treble hooked baits with braid. I know, I use them all the time. The Shock rods are one of those weird rods, that's affordable, and versatile. They are moderate enough to fish treble hooked baits with braid, but also fast enough to use for jigs, soft plastics, etc....they are truly a "do all" rod and do it all at a very good price point.
To the original poster....if your going to use the rod for jerkbaits, lipless cranks, squarebills and mid depth cranks, a shock rod would be a good choice on your budget. I use a 6'6" M Shock for many of those same baits (although I prefer the 7' MH for lipless cranks, larger bodied mid depth cranks, and larger 2.5 sized square bills). That 6'6" M Shock is my favorite rod I have EVER owned for fishing suspending jerkbaits, fishing treble hooked topwater baits, and target casting 1.5 sized squarebills, small swim jigs, and 1/4 - 1/2 oz lipless cranks in shallow water where I don't need the length/power of the 7' MH to rip them out of grass or make long, long casts to cover a ton water on a flat. It's also a nice rod for fishing smaller mid depth baits like Wiggle Warts, and SK Series 3 baits. I have owned A LOT of different rods for doing these things, some costing 3-4 times as much as the Shock's, and I would take the Shock every time. As a bonus, if you want to cut the treble hooked baits off your line, you'll have a good casting rod for fishing light jigs and t-rigs, in light to moderate cover that using a MH or H rod would be overkill with.

On the standard models you're right, they are a bit over rated on powers. The micro guide versions are pretty spot on though.
Farmer, you are absolutely right. My Berkley Lightning rods are the originals. Can't get past the color of the Shocks. I've read before that the Shocks have a softer action to accommodate the use of braid. I just recently added three crankbait rods to my stable. All carry a nylon line. I don't read of someone suggesting braid for a cranking rod very often.
My brother-in-law uses 40# PP on all his rods. I've seen them under the load of fish and have to say they all are slow action rods. He has no problems landing bass on a #11 Floating Rapala....a favorite lure of his.
I have to change my opinion based on your post. However, I don't think I will ever fish a Shock. Have all the rods I need for retirement. Normally I don't let appearances sway me very much on purchases, but if I ever do buy another rod I doubt it will be a Shock no matter how good it works. Still can't get over their ugly colors. Nor do I think I will ever use braid on my cranking rods. I'm more of a mono/co-polymer guy. I like braid for when I throw back into the lily pads.

checked out wally world here in southern Indiana they did not carry either of these rods. but person behind counter said they would be putting in new stock in a couple of weeks, and will be having sale on older stock.

Ahhh.........yes they (the Shocks) are quite a bit different in action then the standard/original Lightning Rod, and more in line with what you based your opinion on. Don't take my post as "calling you out", as that was not the intent, I was just confused as to what you were talking about as my exp with them was about 180 degrees different.
Look at the Daiwa Aird X at Academy. On clearance for $39 right now. The M actions feel good for cranks. I couldn't pass up the deal. The Shock feels like a heavy broomstick compared to it.
