Shimano Curado Vs. Lews Speed Spool Vs. Bps Pro Qualifier 2025

fishing user avatarTaylor Peterson reply :

I'm looking to get my first baitcast set up. I'm debating between the lews speed spool or tournament speed spool, the shimano curado, shimano citicia, and the bass pro shops pro qualifier. What are your thoughts?

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Curado

fishing user avatarrmcguirk reply :

Of those listed, I have a Curado and a few PQs.  I like my Curado much better.  I know a lot of people love the older Curados.  I've got no experience with them, so I can't comment.

At my local Dick's Sporting Goods store, I saw them the other night marked down to $129.  I imagine they're going to fall even further once the new model is announced.

fishing user avatarHi Salenity reply :

Curado E

fishing user avatartomustang reply :

Since you listed the curado which retails $160 i would say look at the auction sites, you can find the lews tournament pro for $150

fishing user avatarHomersTomaco reply :

I know people will not like to hear this, but the Pro Qualifier is a much better reel than the curado at a lot less money.  You can get it in a nice combo for just a little more than a curado on its own

fishing user avatarGoose52 reply :

Shimano will be announcing a new model Curado (and possibly a new Citica) at the Bassmaster Classic around the 3rd week of February.  Soon, the current model Curados (and perhaps Citicas) will probably be reduced to some REALLY attractive prices.  My advice is to wait a month (if you can) and see what types of prices are being offered on Curados and Citicas then. A Curado for about $100...or a Citica for around $75, might influence your decision.

fishing user avatarSmallmouth Hunter reply :

The curado G might be on clearance for around $75. TW usually does 50% off sales during the holidays or some other sales event on reels they are trying to "move". I would expect 50% at Academy sports as well.. Remember when they sold Daiwa zillion type R's for $199??

fishing user avatarOkeechobeeAngler reply :

For me it would be the Lews.

fishing user avatar*Hootie reply :

I have the Curado, and the Lews and the PQ. Like em all.

Guess that means I'm no help at all.

fishing user avatarSCangler91 reply :

Got a PQ as my first decent bait casting setup.  I'd recommend it to anyone because it has been near flawless for me and is tough to beat for the price.  You could use the money you save getting the PQ over the Curado to put into a better rod.

fishing user avatarDave P reply :

PQ is the best bang for the buck especially if you catch it on sale. I am also interested in trying a Lews. No comment on the Shimanos.

I have a curado E and a lews TP...both rock! However the TP at 150 cannot be beat imo. Do like my curado e better? Yes i do but only by the slimmest of margins...if were in the market for a sub $200 reel it would come down to the lews TP or BB1 pro hands down

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

These comparisons aren't apples / apples price wise. The Curado is probably the best built by a small margin but highest price. The PQ is the best value unless you get a Shimano on clearance as suggested. The Lews is in there with the Citica and PQ. None will disappoint take the best deal.

fishing user avatarGaerith reply :

I would go with a PQ or a curado on clearance just in case baitcasters turn out to be not your thing.

fishing user avatarkingkong85 reply :

Any of those will be fine. So you can't go wrong at all. I will suggest that you go to the store and hold the reel on the rod you'll be using. Check to see how it feels, if it's comfortable and etc.

fishing user avatarArv reply :

Depending on what price you can get the curado for would be the biggest thing to me. The pq is a great reel for the price.

fishing user avatarTylertut reply :

I've had my Lew's Tournament MG close to two years now and have no complaints thus far. I've used both of the other reels you mentioned and have no bad things to say about either for their price. You can't go wrong with any go them but I myself would go with Lew's.

fishing user avatarlmbfisherman reply :

I own Curados and PQs, both are excellent reels.  I would seek out a deal for either of these reels, since a new Curado is coming out you will see great deals on the G Series.  If you can get one for 99, that would be a super price.  The PQ will probably go on sale soon, so at 79.99 an even better bang for your buck.  I don't think you will lose in either of these in my opinion.  I don't own a Lews so can't comment.

fishing user avatar*Hootie reply :

I have been told BPS will be having during the Spring Fishing Classic for $99.99, and will be doing the trade in thing. I'm thinking $89.00 out the door. The Curado that is.

fishing user avatardam0007 reply :

Never used the others but own 2 curados of the latest series and they perform flawlessly.

fishing user avatarSmallmouth Hunter reply :

Academy sports and TW will probably have the curado G for $75-80, and the citica G for $55-65 (if there is going to be a new citica).

fishing user avatarbartdude186 reply :

For your first setup (or your 1000th) i would recommend the PQ. best deal on a reel hands down IMO, i put the money i save into other tackle.

fishing user avatarbuzzed bait reply :

i love my curado, the PQs are nice based on my limited trial with a friend's and frankly i'm not a fan of the Lew's speed spool i have one/am trying to upgrade

What are some good auction sites?

fishing user avatarTaylor Peterson reply :

Thanks everybody! This is my first time using this forum and you all replied so quickly. I'm going to wait a while and see if the curados go down considerably I'll probably just buy whatever I can get the best deal for on ebay, I'm getting a lefthanded so my options on ebay are limited. i would love to know of some good fishing auction sites...

fishing user avatartomustang reply :

Ebay, plenty of options for new lower than retail prices

fishing user avatarGreen Hornet reply :

The Lews Speed Spool is an outstanding reel.
