Berkley Big Game / Yo-zuri Hybrid / Gliss lines 2025

fishing user avatarlivemusic reply :

I have never used these lines - Berkley Big Game or Yo-zuri Hybrid or Gliss. If you use one, why do you like it? What presentations do you use it for? So far, I haven't liked fluorocarbon but I will try it one more time. I really like braid, but I'm open to others. I fish a variety of lures... soft plastics, spinnerbait, chatterbait, frogs, topwater, crankbaits but overall, the most common for me is soft plastics like flukes, worms, brush hogs, both weighted and weightless.

Thanks for info!

fishing user avatarsmalljaw67 reply :

I use braid for 2 things, frogs in slop and heavy flipping and the rest of my fishing is done with mono. Berkley Big Game is inexpensive but it performs well, it has some stretch but not bad and the abrasion resistance is fantastic. The other mono I like is the Spider Wire Ultimate Mono, it was advertised to have less stretch than other monos and have an excellent abrasion resistance while being thin. Well I'm on my second season of using it and I really like it, it has a little more memory than other mono but not as much as fluorocarbon and the 10lb is the same diameter as Big Game 8lb and for the memory all it needs is two spritzes of KVD L&L and you're good for the day. Yo-Zuri Hybrid is a softer line closer to mono than fluorocarbon, I haven't used it but I have never heard of anyone that has used it that didn't like it.

Spinning gear:  Yo-Zuri Hybrid #6 (11.95 lb breaking strength)

Baitcasting:  Hybrid #12 (19.5 lb breaking strength)

The #1 reason I use Big Game is abrasions resistance, I fish some of the gnarliest cover imaginable with 15#.

Aint fished the other two ;)

fishing user avatarstrikefc34 reply :

I used to use a lot of Big Game, I feel like maybe 5-7 years ago they switched the formula and I don't like it as much. Seems to have a lot of memory. I picked up a spool of Izorline XXX last year and love it. Its not as cheap as Big Game, but its tough with much less memory.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

Big Game from 10 to 17 lbs test is what most of my reels have, when I need something with more muscle ( like flipping to mesquite trees or huizache/ palo verde/ cat nail brush ) then I use P-Line CXX. YoZuri hybrid/ Trilene XT for anything under 8 lb test because it´s thin, manageable, low memory and highly abrassion resistant.

Big Game is good, it´s cheap, can be found even in 7 eleven, abrasion resistant, doesn´t stretch like a rubber band and to me it also "feels good", tried and true, 99% of the 10+ lbers I´ve caught were caught with Big Game without any problem.

fishing user avatarbuzzed bait reply :

big game is best bang for the buck on mono and can be found anywhere, like Walmart.  yo zuri is MUCH stronger than the line rating so you can use smaller diameter and still have confidence in the line, it's good stuff.  aside from frogging or punching, you could use either of these lines for all your techniques.

i have no experience with gliss, but a few reviews from guys on here said it just doesn't hold up well over time.

That's pretty cool that 15# is so tough. Hookset is so important to me, do you think it stretches and is a problem with a hookset, or do you want it to stretch? Do you use a certain rod with this line? Do you use it for all baits/techniques?

fishing user avatarJar11591 reply :

I use Berkley Big Game for two things:

1. for big game lol, such as pike or carp because its very strong and manageable compared to other lines of the same diameter.

2. backing for bait casters, as its cheap

I use Yo-Zuri 25 lb fluorocarbon leader material and love it, but haven't tried Yo-Zuri hybrid.

i use 15# big game on my rod for chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, swim jigs.  it has a little stretch, but unless you're casting 100 yards out ;) it won't have any negative effect on the hookset.  no special rods needed.  i'm going to swap my cranking rod out with some 10# big game here soon.

The amount of stretch in mono is greatly exaggerated!

I use 15# Big Game for every technique except punching.

I caught 30 double digit bass all on 15# Big Game!

I've caught em in grass, brush, lay downs, standing timber, shallow water, & deep water.

fishing user avatartstraub reply :

I use Big Game 12# on most of my casting reels.  I started using it because its affordable 1/4# spool is like $6-$7 at Walmart.  You can do a lot of reels with a spool.  I like it so much that I keep using it.  Its tough, holds a knot well, and untangles easy enough when you get one of those professional overruns.

fishing user avatarIndianaFinesse reply :

I haven't used the hybrid line, but I have tried the other two.  I'll start out with big game, it is definitely the best mono for the money.  It has a little more stretch and a little more memory than other mono, but it is much better than other mono any where near it's price range.  All around decent line.

The gliss monofiliment line is without a doubt the best line I have tried.  It is similar to braided line in that it floats and that it has no stretch, but unlike braid it isn't braided, so it does not have any roughness or texture to it at all, gliss is completely smooth.  It is also about half of the diameter of braid, which combined with being completely smooth makes it easily the farthest casting line ever, without a doubt.

As far as the line deteriorating over time, I have been using it four to five times a week since last September without any issues.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

During the 70's I used Trilene XT 12lb & 17lb, during the 80's went to Big Game 12lb and Trilene XL 6 lb for spinning. During the 90's FC line hit the market and tried Sunline Shooter 12lb and learned to cuss knot failure until trying the SD jam knot.

Today I still use 15lb Big Game at night because of trusting my knots tied in the dark and never stopped using 12lb Big Game for crankbaits. Swimbaits I use Sunline Defier Nylon 25lb, Sunline Sniper 14lb for worms and jigs during the day light and 6lb Sniper for spinning.

60 lb Fins braid with 25lb Defier leader whenever flipping/punching heavy cover.

Use whatever line works for you!

Tom

fishing user avatarBurtonxj reply :

I use 10lb Big Game for top water and jerkbaits. Really like the stuff. Great price for 1500 yards of line.

Amen!  14# Big Game for most everything, 12# for some crankbaiting, 10# for spinning.  Braid is just used for backing, its good for nothing but filler.  Like Shaw Grisby describes in a video.  Top shot of 50 feet of mono.

I'm interested in hearing a little more about your thoughts on mono line and stretching.  I am wondering if you're saying that the amount of stretch in mono line is exaggerated, or if the effects of mono line stretching are exaggerated?   Anyway a .01 for your thoughts.

It doesn't stretch like a friggin' rubber band, I've caught thousands of fish with Big Game and you don't hear me whine about how much the line "stretches".

Both!

It's like how some angles believe the amount of separation between an unpegged bullet & the lure is in feet!

It aint! It's in inches!

Like I've said many times my hookup ratio with mono is in the upper 90 percentile range & I don't believe switching to fluorocarbon or braid will put me at 100%!

I think that the tests that many people quote from another popular site shed some light, but only to the fact that both FC and Mono do in fact have "X" amount of stretch at breaking strength.   What I don't agree with is that the amount of stretch at breaking strength tells the whole story.  What I would like to see is a test that first determines the breaking strength of a line. Once breaking strength has been determined then measure the amount of stretch at different percentages.  For instance measure the stretch at 15 percent of breaking strength, then 30, 45, 60, 75 and finally 90.   I personally don't care how much stretch a line has at breaking strength, it does not tell me anything, I want to see how the line performs during it's working strength.

I think this type of test would show something that FC mfg's have claimed for quite a while, that FC does in fact stretch less than mono, but at working strength not breaking strength.   Anyway just something I have thought about for a while.   Off the soap box now.

The test are do with one end of the mono attached to an immovable object and the other end attached to some electric or hydraulic gizmo.

What I've experienced with line stretch is a bass on one end and a rod on the other end!

That empirical evidence tells me everything I need to know!

Who, the ones that know you don't have to listen to internet experts. The ones that can catch fish without this seasons uber bearing sub 2 oz. wunder reel from that one company whose reels are the only reels that catch fish.  The ones who don't have a glittery boat or boxes and boxes of $50 plugs carved by an artist in his garage in So. Cali? The ones who know that before fancy bullet proof lines called Gliss or Platypus, b.b.'s with orange seals and lures with teeny tiny japanese flags painted on them...... our grand pappys were catching hawgs using their brains and flexing huge biceps born of holding a reel that...gasp..... weighed more than 5 oz.?

Izorline XXX & Yozuri Hybrid are both  GREAT co-poly lines but unfortunately are hard to find except on line ...

I ´aint no granpappy yet, nor my daddy or my granpaw fished but I´ve been ketchin´ them big momma basses looooong before I ever purchased a Japanese lure, a bag of trusty ole Mann´s 6" Jelly Worms ( grape color please )( Jelly Waggler for stained/murky/muddy water ), a 3/0 razor sharp hook and a 1/4 oz LEAD sinker or one of my hand poured jigheads with oversized 3-4/0 hook ( yup, shaky heads jigs that how they call them now ), some Big Game line and we were in business.

I saw Bill Dance compare the stretch of FC vs Mono using figures presented by his sponsor on a show recorded within the last few weeks.  I think he uses Hi Seas and they reported less stretch with their mono than their FC.   As far as which to use it depends. On what you are trying to accomplish.
