Hey guys i could really use some help in narrowing down what to get for my new rod. Already have a 6'6 medium weight spinning rod i use for bass and just about anything. A 7' medium heavy bait caster, same purpose. We have a 25 mile bike trail by me with many streams lakes and a fishing pear on it that span out across the whole length. I am thinking a shorter rod for when fishing with little vertical casting room. So i am thinking 5'6 to 6' medium, maybe medium light. And i would like this as a spinning setup. Looking to spend 30-80 dollars on the rod and reel each.
Some brands and models i have considered: Rod: St. Croix Triumph. Ugly Stick. Bass Pro Shops Graphite series. Cabelas tourny trail II. Reels: Shimano Spirex or sedona. Gander mountain Guide series. Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier.
I AM OPEN TO ANY BRANDS!
Thanks,
Christian
I would look into rod/reel combo series and in your price range probably GSX Tournament which is $80

Pflueger Trion combo for $60

Thanks a lot! But i do think i said this wrong. 30- 80 dollars for the rod and 30-80 dollars for the reel. so 160 max total. i do like Gandermountain though. And also my mistake for forgeting to put i need it to be a two piece so i can carry it on my back.
By the way welcome to the site and if going the Gander Mountain way far as reel I would go no less than the GSX Tournament series. On 3/24/2012 at 7:01 AM, MichiganFishing1997 said:Thanks a lot! Maybe look at this too. I like mine E21 Carrotstix http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Element-21-Carrot-Stix-Professional-Grade-Spinning-Rod-67-Med-Heavy&i=446568&aID=504AB1&merchID=4006
Ok good to know. Im not loaded with cash but fishing is a passion so iv grown to like house brand. Such as BassPro. My baitcaster is all BassPro and I just got Two of their fly rods. The only problem i have is that the drag on my brothers guide series broke but that was in florida on the ocean... so what about a rod?
Samething happen to my brother's brother- n- law guide series reel. So I don't trust guide series brand but I do have a GSX tournament combo and a GSX Titanium reel that I like. both. It's just the Titanium writing is like painted on so it will rub off but it's so far very smooth. On 3/24/2012 at 7:09 AM, MichiganFishing1997 said:Ok good to know. i have several Bass Pro brands that I like as well. I think I'm going to get the E21 carrotstix if still have mine in and if the sale is still on in 2 weeks when my gift card comes in. Other than that I'm not sure at Gander Mountain I might give the Veritas or Elite ll a try but if cash is the problem the Berkley Lightning rod is highly recommended here and is only $40 http://www.cabelas.com/product/Berkley-Lightning-Rod-Spinning-Rods/1304129.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3FN%3D0%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dberkley%2Blightning%26WT.z_mc_id1%3D43000000024303336%26pcrid%3D%26WT.srch%3D1%26WT.tsrc%3DPPC%26WT.mc_id%3Dgoogle|fis_Rods_general|USA%26rid%3D20&Ntt=berkley+lightning&WTz_l=PPC
yeah i would like one of those E21's but right now i need a rod that will break down and i can use for travel. i plan on just strapping it to this http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product__10151_-1_10051_10221672?hvarTarget=search&cmCat=10019400#add-to-cart
http://www.berkley-f...ghtning-rod-im6
2 piece 6'6 M http://www.berkley-f...ghtning-rod-im6
If go to search bar you can see all the reviews and recommendation this rod gets some likes the shock for $49 as well.
2 piece 6'6 ML http://www.berkley-f...ghtning-rod-im6
Walmart also carry these.
I really like the looks of that rod. i would probably have to get the 2 piece 6 foot. I have a Berkley Cherrywood that i have had for 7 years and im very happy with it. I will definitly put this on the top of my list. And what about a reel? i dont think i want a guide series.
Cause money is a budget like I would look into the Pflueger Trion 4735 for $39.99 http://www.basspro.c...ba-00004750811b
Pflueger President 6935 for $59.99 http://www.basspro.c...10213341/196405
I never tried any of the Shimano you mentioned but I think both are also highly recommended.
Rememebr i can go up to 80. And i haven't ever had a Pflueger so how do they compare to like a shimano?
^^^Maybe this will help. It mention both reels as for everyone opinion on best spinning reel for $80.
Man this is hard! And do you know any store that sells the Berkley??
walmart does. Well the one here does.
Okay. well what about a cabelas rod? because im going to get that president reel and its on sale at cabelas
I know nothing on Cabela's besides chicitybasser uses them. Maybe send him a PM
maybe this? too short though?http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Fishing-Rods/Spinning-Rods%7C/pc/104793480/c/104764680/sc/104836680/Shimano174-Clarus-Spinning-Rods/703848.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffishing-fishing-rods-spinning-rods%2F_%2FN-1102841%2FNe-1000002949%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104793480%253Bcat104764680&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104793480%3Bcat104764680%3Bcat104836680
I think the chicitybasser likes from Cabela's are Prodigy and the XML
Looking at the Clarus the 5'6 is a MH and the 5' is an UL. I know you mentioned M to ML
yeah but getting it in a MH would allow me to fish whatever i want given the fact that i will be biking through the countryside not knowing what im going to fish. if i need a thinner line for something like trout than i can use a leader and its an xtra fast rod so more sensitive small fish bites i will still be able to feel. i think that that is what im going to do unless you have something better. thanks for pointing out the president reel too. should i get the one that holds 145 of 8 or 195 of 10?
I'd go with the size 35. It's the 145 of 8.
mind me asking why? because the rod weight is 10-20
I just don't like the size of the bigger reels.
hm...

X2
Which is why I decided to go with baitcasting reels when I got back into fishing.
Sorry, MichiganFishing, but I can't offer you any advise other than to say I like the looks and reviews of the President spinning reel, and have heard the Prodigy rod line is a good value at full price. On sale it is just that much better. It is all hearsay tho as I haven't fished either. So take it for what it is worth. Zilch!
Thanks man!i just got a baitcaster so i wanted something that i can bring with me biking. Seems like it will be a good set up, going with suffix performance braid if you have any input on that.
I use the Sufix 832 braid which I have no problem with besides it fades way to quickly. It goes from green to almost white. So I carry a black permanent marker when I'm out using frogs or topwater.

I've come to consider these ratings as a guide only. If I feel like using 8# mono with a rod having that rating, then I use it. How about people that use 80# braid on a rod rated for 15-30 pound? I look at it this way, if I use lighter line than suggested what is the worst that can happen? Break the line, right? If I use 80# braid I could break the rod. Everyone has had their line snap on occasion. Mostly with mono or fluoro, but I've snapped a lure off casting with 30# braid as I'm sure others have also done. Didn't hurt the rod and it is rated for 10-17# line. A little common sense goes a long way.
You should have a feel afer awhile for how much pressure you can put on a line. If you must pull the boat over to where the lure is caught by using the line, don't high stick the rod. Common sense.
Another possible rod choice. Several of different lengths and powers in 2 piece are available. 50% off. $80 now $40.
