What is your normal casting distance for a baitcaster with a 3/8 ounce jig and tube? Describe your outfit and distance.
I'm getting about 40 paces (roughly 40 yards) on a normal cast.
Curado I, St Croix Avid 6'6" MH F
I'm roughly the same with my curados on a 7ft mh rod and 14 pound flouro. With my calcutta d 201, I am able to chuck 3/8 of an ounce a few yards further on the same line and rod. The other day I was using a stick bait in two colors. One on a curado e and a carbonlite 7 mhf, the other on a calcutta d and a 61/2 ft mhf avid. I was achieving identical distances between the two. Odd.
Here to watch. These always get interesting.
Holla, do you suspect that you aren't getting the distance you want/need?
Something is wrong with your reel if you aren't getting at least 90 yards.
100' or so would be considered a long cast fpr the most part. Are greater distances achieveable under certain circumstances? Sure. To maximize potential use a rod of 7-8' where the weight casted falls somewhere near the middle of the posted range, use a supple and manageable line and educate your thumb. This said, max cating distance is way over rated and a distant second to accuracy when it come to putting fish in the boat (or on the bank). It sounds like your setup is working as intended. For sheer casting distance you can't beat spinning tackle with light braid and a rod that loads well.
Would love to see video footage on a football field showing distances folks claim they can cast. Also factor in wind direction and speed as well as line, rod, reel, weight of bait thrown, and just how aerodynamic it is. I have never measured this personally so I am not going to take a guess at it.

X2. I can cast far enough to catch fish.
i have the same reel but a 735 dobyns coalition i think im getting around 30-40 yards on the casting distance. with out measuring. I might be able to tweak out 5 yards more if i got brave and took a brake off.....
These are as interesting as people guessing how big of a fish they caught.
On a 7'4" medium rod maybe 30 yards.
Less on 7'2" MH. That's at 3/8oz.
Most of the baits I throw are 1/2 oZ and above including plastics. 1/2oz Buzzbait with a trailer can be launched pretty dang far.
Any claims over 50ish yards I'm very suspect of.
A tad over 110' was my furthest measured cast one day while playing around in the yard. Further might be possible using a 1/2 trap and a longer rod but as mentioned by DVT it's pointless. Putting it in the right spot is more important.
I'm surprised no one gave me a hard time over my post. I have read several posts claiming 90 yards or more. My average is probably about 30-35 yards with a very few exceeding that ...but not by much. I assume it is me since so many others get much greater casting distances.
I fill my spool to the bevel on it....not 1/16-1/8 below as often suggested. A 3/4 oz. spoon on a 7' MH Jupiter rod with a Gen 1 STX and 40# braid saw at least half the spool showing on several casts. I figure that has to be a good 60 yards, probably a bit more. That is the only day I used the spoon as we were fishing brackish water for salt water species.

Can get that distance with just a tube, 4" YUM tube 4/0 trokar ewg hook.
I don't get hung up on how far I'm casting as long as I can put my lure where it needs to go. I honestly don't have much of an idea of how far I can chuck something. I could probably come close to spooling my Aldebaran BFS (spooled w/ 20# braid) on a MH rod with a 3/8 oz jig if I wanted to. I'll let yall do the math.

no no no no no no no cant use 20# braid on a bc reel no no no no no just cant.
I love the 100 yard guys

I'm sure I could get 50+ yards out of my Tatula and 7'5 MH Megabass rod but that is the try hard and bomb it type of cast that doesn't seem to work out very well for me. My average is around 35 to 40 yards.
Thanks for the responses! I've been practicing hitting targets at 30 to 40 yards and as this is my second year with a b/c just wanted to get a sense if that was about the right distance. Every time I loosen her up to get a bit more i end up picking out snarls. Just trying to get things figured out on a few new setups.

Sounds like you've got distance down. Your are smart for practicing accuracy. I find a bait nicely placed and quietly executed are the most important things you can master when casting... And distance can be important as well. Good luck practicing! On 4/11/2015 at 8:12 AM, Hollada said:Thanks for the responses! Around 40 yards maybe a little more with a 1/2 oz jig and trailer.

For some odd reason I find long casts hard to get a good hook set on. I guess its like the guy who can throw the baseball the hardest, but he can't throw a strike.

My hookup ratio decreases with jigs, plastics and frogs as well when I'm far away. But I've found a heavier rod and braid will help. When I'm fishing from a boat I'm not usually shooting for distance. But when I'm fishing from a canal bank, a good long cast helps immensely. I bought a seven six casting rod just to fish some of the canals here in south fl. And it's helped me to cast the opposite points and legdes I couldn't reach with shorter rods.
I get 20 to 25 usually it's all I need u don't like to make long bombing cast unless I'm throwing a spinner or a trap
You guys that are happy with 20-25yd casts make me think you're fishing from a boat. I have a couple places that I fish that the access point is about 50-60yd from the opposing weed line.
I had a hard time hitting it last year, but I upgraded my gear and I can hit it fine now. It was frustrating because I could see them feeding but couldn't reach that far.
When I'm fishing most of my bank fishing spots, I'm cool with 35-40yd...but occasionally I have to reach out.
The real important issue becomes accuracy...as stated.
I go out into the driveway and set a 5 gallon bucket at the end and try to hit the bucket. (That's 15-20yd) Then I cast across the street into this circle that was spray painted on the gutter. (About 25yd) Then I shoot caddy corner to the neighbors green rolling trash can. (About 35yd) Then I alternate...because if you can't be versatile enough to judge the distance on the first cast, it could cost you a fish or a lure.
When the neighbors can isn't out, I use a weightless senko. When I want to reach out to his can, I use 1/4, 3/8, & 1/2 oz practice plugs.
I know I can throw a 8" hudd pretty d**n far...
Lol, I love these threads
Casting a 100 yards is child's play, surf rod and a thin profile lure like a diamond jig, crippled herring or a kastmaster, but we don't cast that far unless there are fish out there. I don't use a surf rod and my distance is no where near 100 yards, most of our fish are caught within 15 yards of shore.
Freshwater bass fishing is different, the hooksets are not as solid and many fish are lost due to bringing them in from a long distance. I don't even try and cast far maybe on average 40 feet or so, just like the surf I'm angling my lure back to the shoreline. Only when I see fish out a ways do I put the pedal to the floor, that's when I get the wind knots too.
