Concept z reel 2024

fishing user avatarIneedanewscreename20180506 reply :

Hello, I am looking into a new baitcaster for my 7’6 heavy daiwa Jupiter rod. I want a reel that can handle big carp, catfish, and bass. I have been looking into the concept z by 13 fishing and it seems to be a great option, anyone have any experience with this reel? Or suggestions on other reels?

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

IMO, a low-profile casting reel isn't a good option for catfish and carp. Carp are better targeted with spinning gear for the most part and catfish I want an option on the reel that disengages the spool to allow the fish to pull line like can be found on baitfeeder spinning reels or casting reels with a bait clicker option.

Can it work? Sure, just a lot better options.

I use the Concept C for catfish, striper and bass. It works great.

I'd look into some of the wide spool, higher capacity low profile reels if you need it that versatile.  Lews super duty wide spool.  Think daiwa has a cple and so does abu and shimano

A buddy of mine has 2 of them. He says that they are a piece of trash. He had them both send in for repair twice.

Absolutely not worth the price tag. Much better options available for that kind of money.

Their customer service is extremely slow to respond as well.

I have a concept c and while the reel hasn’t let me down, it is definitely my least favourite reel. For the money they have on it, it’s the pickiest reel I own. Any slight change in wind, spoil tension, brakes and the thing blows up! It does cast far but so do my chronarch and k with a lot less headache. On top of that after 1 season of use the finish is bubbling like a rusty car! Come on! 300 dollar reel in Canada and 1 season and it’s starting to look like ****. It will be my last 13 fishing reel that’s for sure. I also have a 7’6” envy black rod and the guides are so crooked it shows what they let slip past there quality control line. Also a 300 dollar rod in Canada!

fishing user avatarDogBone_384 reply :

I own Concept A, C, E, and Z reels. They all work great. I find the Z is very finicky and requires too much adjustment. My Z doesn’t throw light baits very well.

I installed Z ‘bearings’ in one of my A’s and it’s phenomenal, so I’s attribute the Z’s poor performance to something else inside the reel.

For the extra $20/30, get a Concept C (or Shimano/Diawa).   The C is much smoother than the Z and requires little/no readjustment when changing baits.

Lol there she is. It’s made for a gorgeous light squarebill set up, bomb those light baits. But I just think for the money there’s much much better reels out there. I’d love to get another chronarch mgl for that one and a bantam for a deep cranking set up

I agree there are far better options out there. I liked the 13 rods when they first came out. Kinda seems like most of their stuff now is all hype. Myself...I'd look at virtually any company that makes reels over them.

fishing user avatarRichF reply :

Even with all the negative press, I still wanna try this dang reel. Is that weird? Even if it's not great, $100 on Amazon seems like a great deal.

Daiwa Tatula 150 or 200. They are powerhouse reels for a great price.

Check out this price too!

$109 !!!!!

fishing user avatarJediAmoeba reply :

The Daiwa Jupiter 7'6" heavy rod is not good for much - it's a flipping stick.  I have one and have it dedicated as a punching rod because.it.doesnt cast lures well at all with basically no flex throughout the rod.

Similar price on Amazon...which I trust WAY more than E-Bay.

There's a couple of authorized daiwa dealers on ebay , I've never had a problem with either , and I've bought many.

fishing user avatarcraww reply :

Bluebasser gave you the best advice, for catfish (I'm not a carp guy) you're better off getting something with a clicker.

The species & size matter also. Channel cats under 8-10lbs, any low pro baitcaster is ok- but loosening and then tightening the star drag everytime u get a fish is still kindve awkward. Cranking & setting a circle hook into ticked off blues & flat heads in current? Making long cast w/heavy lead? Not so much....You need a reel that'll hold a sufficient amount of thick line and a stiff frame that keeps everything in alignment when that fish knows its hooked.

There are low profile baitcasters that'll pull off what you want- though you may make concessions in ability to cast lighter bass lures due to the heavier spools.

The Daiwa Lexa (w/the clicker) would be an option. I believe theres a reel in the current revo line that has a clicker also. I have an older Revo NaCl w/the option that's served its purpose for casting plugs and fishing live bait for stripers- but that models discontinued.

Resurrecting this thread.  I just purchased a few of these art the closeout price of $129 from dick's.  I have 2 concept A's in the lower gear that I purchased in '14 that haven't given me any problems, and I needed a few reels for my upcoming BFL on Grand.  I purchased from dicks so if something is awry when they get here, I can return them.  If they are solid, I'll drop KP spools in them.

I got mine from Dicks back in December for $80. I passed on it when it was on sale for $100 because of reviews but at $80 I couldn't pass it up. I put it on a Extreme HP 702c and I've had no problems with it casting 1/5 oz Ned Rigs. A lot of old heads don't like the bright color though, but it didn't bother me. I did just buy a replacement for it though, a SLX MGL 70, should do even better for lighter baits. I will sell my Z and probably be able to get a little more than what I paid for it.

I thought this thread was new so I was going to comment on catfish reels, so I will anyway.

I will eventually be in the market for one and my three top choices are..

Abu Garcia C3 Catfish Special

Ming Yang CL60

Kast King Rover

I'm leaning towards the Catfish Special but it's the most expensive, I just think it would look nice on a Whisper Seeker Catfish rod, since I can't find any Rippin Lips Catfish rods anywhere.

For casual catfishing a regular ambassadeur or daiwa millionaire should suit you just fine

Catfish and Carp did some reviews and the Kastking rover is essentially the same reel he was using that's branded different - it's pretty much junk.  If you use them infrequently though they are a good buy because they have the things you need for catfishing...

Thanks! I seen one of his where he also said the handles have some slop in them too. The Ming Yang definitely seems like the better buy for about the same price. I rarely fish for catfish, I might fish a couple of times a year to eat a few, or to try to get a 26" for the Fish Ohio Pin, but I usually catch them mostly while bass fishing, or even on panfish gear on accident. This past season I had to fight two huge cats probably close to 10 lbs. for over 45 mins. each while panfishing with 4 lb line in thick hydro from a kayak when they bit my 1" Gulp Minnow, once in pitch darkness, lol.

fishing user avatarKP Duty reply :

Didn't know TT did a review of this reel, and now I'm feeling better about my purchase.  Cal and company over at TT are definitely not 13 fanboys
