Best knot for Braid to Fluoro? 2025

fishing user avatarMatt Duprau reply :

Hey guys,

I've been using a blood knot for quite sometime for tying on a fluoro leader to my braid main line. Is there an easier/stronger knot that would be a better choice? I have yet to break off a fish, but, it's a pain to tie on the boat. Any suggestions welcome!

fishing user avatarJon G reply :

alberto

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

Albright/Alberto variants

uni-to-uni (I'm tying this 99% of the time now, simply
the quickest to tie when I'm out in my yak)

fishing user avatarDypsis reply :

I use the Alberto but this winter my goal is to try and learn the FG knot.

fishing user avatarSteveo-1969 reply :

You'll get lots of different answers, but for me it's the uni-to-uni knot.  Very simple and quick to tie and also very reliable.  I don't have a boat but I tie this knot while standing waist deep in the middle of the river.

fishing user avatartander reply :

I use the alberto knot. They say they  the FG knot is better but I can tie the alberto knot fast and it hold so why change.

Welcome to BR Matt, this post will be moved soon to another forum for rods, reels and line.

The best knot is subjective and everyone has an opinion what ithat is.

Few knots are as easy to tie as a blood knot, usually used to join lines together when using backup line on a spool and not the strongest knot. I use the Uni to Uni or double Uni knot similar to a blood knot, stronger joining braid to leaders and easy to tie. The UG knot is one strongest and very low profile knot, but difficult to tie right on the water.

fishing user avatarMassYak85 reply :

It depends what you want out of your knot. IMO....

Easiest to tie: Uni-to-Uni. This knot is very easy to learn, but has the disadvantage of a lower knot strength. And when using larger diameter lines can be somewhat bulky. I have stopped using this altogether after about 5 hooksets that resulted in the knot breaking. That's never happened to me with any other connection knot.

Thinnest and Strongest: FG knot. Literally the thinnest possible knot you can tie. Period. Great for going through microguides or even back into the spool. It also beats out almost every other connection knot in terms of retaining line strength. When tied correctly the knot to your lure will break before this does. The bad thing is it is arguably one of the most difficult leader knot to tie. If you need to tie a leader really quick while on the water it may not be the best choice. It's difficulty can also lead to it failing you, should you tie it incorrectly.

Alberto: Personally I feel it has a good mix of both worlds. It's still very thin, comparable but not equal to the FG knot in that respect. It's relatively easy to tie, and has good strength. This is starting to become my favorite.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Don't intend to start a debate over knot strength, take a look at Knot Wars for example. What you see with both Albright and Alberto is wide failure strength values, no consistency.

The UG knot is the strongest tested for joining braid to leader but complex and difficult to tie on the water, easier at home and like all knots when tied incorrectly will fail.

I use the alberto knot if i'm on the lake cause it's so much faster, but if i'm rigging up in advance I use the FG knot.

fishing user avatarfullcoupe reply :

Blood knot is easier to me than the double uni. I can tie a blood knot on the water with two hands in strong wind/chop/rain pretty easily - all the others I can't really get down to two hands. I don't use leaders all that frequently, but the ones I have caught fish on (or gotten snagged on for that matter) never failed me...

This^^

fishing user avatarYudo1 reply :

I've become really good at tying the alberto quickly and effectively.  I've experimented with the FG, but it's come apart on me.

fishing user avatarOklahoma Mike reply :

I use the Alberto knot. It is simple and fast, and I never have them fail. Whenever I get snagged up the leader always breaks between the knot and the lure rather than the knot itself. No reason to change for me.

fishing user avatarPaul Roberts reply :

FG.

Alberto

fishing user avatarFrenchman83 reply :

Alberto for a number of  years.  I have tried the Blood knot a couple of times but have not gotten it to hold.

fishing user avatarportiabrat reply :

I use the Alberto on any braid that's 8 lb test or heavier, mainly because it's easy to tie.  In my experience, the FG knot works much better for lighter braid.

fishing user avatarNHBull reply :

In calm conditions the FG

Everytime else uni to uni....no need to complicate it any further

fishing user avatarAC870 reply :

Alberto is only one I know.

fishing user avatarBass_Fishing_Socal reply :

I used a lot of blood knot before but just for mono to mono, for braid to mono/fluro I either use uni to uni or surgeon knot depends on where I tid the knot. Note all my braid to backup line use uni to uni.

Do you mean that if your not tying it out in rough conditions or if you are fishing in calm conditions

fishing user avatarfishballer06 reply :

I use the Alberto most of the time, and occasionally I'll use the Seaguar knot but I don't like it as much because it doesn't pass through the guides as easily.

I tie the FG when I am at the dock and uni to uni if the weather is tough.

Truth be told, most of my braid is 10 lbs to 5-12 lb FC, so the Uni passes just fine

Additionally, I can tie the Uni when drunk, in the dark of night, with my toes, so I have a lot more confidence with it

fishing user avatarGrumpyOlPhartte reply :

What @NHBull said; however, for some inexplicable reason, I personally still can't tie a Uni2Uni to save my tush. Using thirty-pound test braid and 12-pound fluorocarbon leader I can get the Uni in the braid just fine but can't seem to get the Uni in the fluorocarbon to be consistent. When I pull everything taut, I get everything from a "perfect" Uni2Uni to a wad of yuck resembling an explosion in a yarn factory. So, I am a fan of the Uni2Uni if I get it right, but if I don't get it right the first time, I resort to the Alberto. And if I pre-rig, I use the FG.  In any case, I find they all work well if I take the time to tie them correctly. My bottom line is to practice while watching TV to learn a few knots correctly.

(Side note: Mebbe I should pick up a 12-pack of my favorite suds and try the Uni2Uni while sloshed to the gills. Might just need to "lubricate" my finger joints!")

fishing user avatarRB 77 reply :

Another vote for Alberto or UNI to UNI.

fishing user avatarYumeya reply :

FG knot is all I use anymore.

I used to use the alberto all the time. Recently saw a way to tie the FG knot quicker and it's all I use now. Still takes a bit more time, but really is the best knot to use. 100% strength and such a low profile there are zero issues with casting.
