What is your recommended baitcasting rod for SpinnerBaits? Brand, length, power, etc. Approx $100-150 range.
Temple Fork Outfitters 7'MHF. Very parabolic bend with plenty of backbone and it's lightweight. I throw 3/8 oz spinnerbaits with it on 20# fluoro or cxx. It can easily handle 1/2 oz spinnerbaits as well. It is a very good moving bait rod.
Lews custom speed stick spinnerbait model can be had for $105 on eBay....doubles great for plastics...light, balanced and sensitive as all get out.
Good suggestions. How about Dobyn's Savvy, Falcon Bucoo, Ducket Micro or Ghost.... ?? Just a few I've heard of but not fished.
G Loomis E6X 783C. Yes, it's more than $150, but only $30, and worth it IMO.
Phenix Maxim maybe? They had an interesting review on it recently on Tackletour and at $109-$129 it fits your price range.
I use a 6' 10" MH/F Ethos from Academy, $40 on sale.
Go find a Quantum Smoke 7' MH-F, the new models are fine as they are the same blank. My buddy cuss me out all the time over that rod, he hates Quantum with a passion but he had to get one after using mine. I also have a shorter rod I like for spinnerbaits but the Smoke handles like a shorter rod and has a lot of feel, I highly recommend that for spinnerbait fishing.
6'6" or 7' MH/F St. Croix Mojo's work great for spinnerbaits.
i'd definitely recommend the 2015 kistler carbon steel "blades, buzz and chatterbaits" rod. 6'9" medium-heavy power/moderate-fast action, 4.0 ounces and feels great.
Wasn't long ago that I rolled my eyes at all the technique-specific rods. I admit that I have come around some. But, I am still a ways from wanting/buying a 'spinnerbait rod'. I find that I throw lighter spinner baits just fine on M-ish rods and larger ones on MH-ish rods. Maybe its partly because I don't spend a ton of time with this bait, but I just haven't found that, for me, spinnerbait fishing requires anything all that different or special in a baitcasting rod.
What am I missing?
Any thoughts on the Duckett Ghost? The 6'-10" Medium seems like an interesting length as I go back and forth between 6-6 and 7-0. But they don't list their specs either so I would think that might be a good spinnerbait rod... anyone have one?
7' MH power mf action falcon bucoo.

What do you think of the 6'-10" MH Bucoo?
The bucco I had was under powered compared to its rating

How is the "moderate fast" godd/better for spinnerbaits?
Daiwa Tatula 7' 2" MH/R rod is my choice for spinner baits, chatterbaits/bladed jigs and swim jigs...

purely a matter of personal taste. some people like slower actions when fishing reaction baits because it gives the fish more time to take the lure deeper into their mouths. my kistler carbon steel "blades, buzz and chatter baits" rod feels very similar in action to my megabass orochi XX spinnerbait special. i also have couple of the g.loomis spinnerbait rods, the SBR812C and SBR813C, both of which are rated extra fast. i enjoy those too...i think i'm more accurate casting spinnerbaits with them but i think i get more short strikes on them too.
If you can find an old crucial at DSG, they were $40 bucks for the 6ft10 spinnerbait rods.
The spinnerbait is a favorite lure of mine. Lure weight determines rod power. Vast majority of my rods have a Fast action, but I will throw them on about any action rod except for my dedicated shallow to mid-depth crankbait rod............cuz don'tcha know it is a dedicated crankbait rod. 3/16 oz. and 1/4 oz. get used on a ML. 1/4-3/8 oz. on a Medium, 3/8-9/16 oz. on a MH and 1/2-3/4 oz. on a Heavy. Currently don't own any 1 oz. spinnerbaits, but have several rods that will handle that weight. Most are Heavy, but have one MH that is rated to 2-1/4 oz. and a couple MH rated to 1-1/2 oz. so a MH rod isn't out of the question for 1 oz. spinnerbaits.
Everyone knows spinnerbaits are quite a bit heavier than their listed weight. They also create a lot of drag (especially bigger ones with Colorado blades) which is why I don't like to get too close to a rod's upper rating. Of course there are exceptions. I would never approach the maximum lure rating on my Falcon or Smallmouth series rods, but would with my Techna AV and Zillion rods. I also would with St. Croix (if I owned any) and feel certain the Abu rods I own would also handle close to the maximum weight listed as both of them seem under-rated to me.
A favorite close range rod for spinnerbaits is a 6' MHF Lightning. Matter of fact that is what it is dedicated to....specifically 1/2 oz. spinnerbaits. That rod with a 1/2 oz. spinnerbait with Colorado blades will make my rod hand shake throughout the entire retrieve. Can't get any more feedback from a lure than that. Another plus is that it is my lowest cost combo at less than $50 total.

I have looked at that rod online as well...but there aren't any in the stores around me. So would the MH or the Heavy equate to the right power for a medium sized Spinnerbait? And what length?
Well I had the trap caster. That would probably make a good spinnerbait Rod as it had some give to it. It was the micro version and the guides did break easily.
The 6'10 pitching stick was rated a heavy but at most a mh if that
Its all personal taste. Depends on how you like to fish spinnerbaits. I really like to roll cast spinnerbaits up under docks.. Its one of my favorite things... So I go with a shorter rod.. I also use a MH so I have the power to set a single hook.. I lil a more moderate action for my moving baits as well. I don't think you necessarily need a technique specific, but I don't see another combo that would serve double duty except for maybe a squarebill outfit. I also think a lot of 'Technique specific' rods are misnomers. Today i saw a 'jig and worm' Mojo Bass that was 6'6". For me, I would never fish a jig /worm on something shorter than 7' bit that's just me.On 6/12/2015 at 3:00 AM, Choporoz said:Wasn't long ago that I rolled my eyes at all the technique-specific rods. I have one of these, and it works fine or light (1/4 oz) spinnerbaits, but I have been using it more for lipless cranks. I've been using a 6'6" mhf st croix premier for 3/8-3/4oz spinnerbaits and I like it a lot!

I really like the Ethos rods as well. Best Rod I've found under $100.

I second this opinion, the Lews rods are just awesome. In fact I'm buying another one for spinner baits. Either the Team Rod or the Custom Soeed Stick. It will be my forth one.
Anyone familiar with the Shimano Zodias 6'-10" Medium? Rated to 3/4 oz... but doesn't state taper..
It's all feel and personal preference at this point. Are you looking to lob the spinnerbaits for distance? Are you looking to make tighter, more accurate casts? Are you going to use them to feel structure/cover? Are you concerned with short strikes (stinger hooks are a great way to fix this problem, btw, without necessarily changing the rod)?
Realistically, you can take advice from some of he best spinnerbaits fishermen on this forum, but if they don't match your style/use of the rod, you could be miserable with it for spinnerbaits. What is important, is noting the lure weight ratings and feeling which rods feel most comfortable (grips, reel seat, trigger/no trigger, etc). Some lures really benefit from a specific rod type, others are largely taste. Spinnerbaits are a matter of taste.
Drastically over simplified break down with some generalizations:
Almost all major manufacturers have good rods in that price range.
- softer tips may increase casting distance, though faster tips typically help control accuracy
- faster tips help you feel the bottom and are typically more sensitive.
- softer tips can create a cushion for hook sets (again, a trailer hook on a faster rod can help, too)
How do you fish spinnerbaits? What do YOU want out of the rod?
The one rod I enjoy the most for Spinnerbaits in the 1/2 and up is my 6'10 Medium Heavy White Ice rod. It is really a great rod for those types of baits. for smaller spinnerbaits 3/8 and down I use the 6'10 Ghost rod for those. Check out the Duckett line of rods, they are great.

All good questions... Thx --
Right now I have a 7-3 White Ice MH that I use for long open water casts - crankbaits and spinnerbaits. What I need is something for casting to shore, in rivers, around structure, etc. I would say mid range and a few longer casts. So something most likely sub 7 feet in length. The tip would be important to cast well but not something so whippy that it folds when dragging the resistance of the Spinnerbait back to the boat. Not throwing big heavy weights with this pole, more medium in size as a general rule.
Thanks too to Senkoguru for his response. Duckett is in the mix, Falcon Bucoo, Kistler Carbon Steel, and anyone familiar with the Shimano Zodias? All these rods are medium to medium heavy approx 6-9 or 6-10 in length. 6-6 seems a bit short but maybe I should consider those as well...
You're right it's a matter of personal taste, but hard to just order off the internet since the stores in the Minneapolis area don't have these Rods in stock to pick up, feel, etc...
From all I've heard, those are great options.
For that, I'd look into a med/MH with a fast tip. One thing to pay attention to are the weight ratings for each manufacturer since there is no "standard" for medium, medium/heavy/etc. For example, I love St Croix, but I also know that typically they run a bit heavy and if I were to compare my Medium St Croix rods to my Medium Abu rods, the St Croix have a lot more backbone.
Hope that example helps. The good news is that all of the rods you've mentioned are good rods, so even if you end up hating them for spinnerbait fishing, you'll no doubt find them useful for soft plastics/jerkbaits/etc.
Well, I ended up ordering a Shimano Zodias 6'-10" Medium Fast from TW. Back ordered but anxious to try it out hopefully before end of the month. Will report back my findings then. -Fry
