Blade Bait Bronze 2025

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

This is a quick video of a nice Fatty that choked the Silver Buddy a couple of days ago.

She went 4.25 and fought like a champ.

I tried moving the camera up to the bow hoping to offer a wider and more encompassing view.

Seems to work but with the wind (that ALWAYS blows here) it's a little hard to hear me, but you're not really missing much  :laugh5:

As the waters cools this bite should only get Hotter.

Nice smallie AJay! I'm pretty pumped for the fall bite and throwin some blades. Im on vacation next week and plan to hunt some toads myself.

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

Were you just casting and retrieving those or fishing them vertically? And do you catch many largemouth on those blade baits or mainly smallies?

Sorry for the questions, nice fish!

Thanks ~ no there's a way to work the bait for best results.

I HIGHLY recommend watching (and then doing) the method seen in this video.

My area is mainly smallies but during the fall, I catch everything with these baits including largemouth.

I'll probably order some soon and be fishing them by the time it gets "cold" down here in south GA.... Haha I'll watch that video now

Cool ~

Something to remember and this is vital as far as being able to fish the bait correctly.

Blade baits work best bouncing along the bottom.  So a relatively clean, weed / grass free bottom is Very Important.  Sand, gravel and even rock is desirable.

Trying to fish these baits down through weeds & or over grass is an exercise in futility and very frustrating.

Fishing blade baits around Wood & / or Brush is do able as long as you can stay out of it most of the time.  Otherwise you're going spend a lot of time hung up and probably going to lose baits.

There are other baits & techniques that are better suited for vegetation & cover than blade baits.

Good Luck.

A-Jay

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

Yeah that's my main concern because most places I fish are big salad bowls lol but what the heck I'll get a few, there are some places I have in mind that should be clear enough by winter to hopefully effectively fish them...

Thanks for the tips, hope you continue to catch huge smallies on em this year!

fishing user avatar00 mod reply :

SCORE!!!!  Love it!

Get some of the tiny 3/16oz and 1/4oz blades (Johnson Thinfisher I think) they should work if you have shallow water (I'm assuming most of what you fish isn't too deep). Those are what I use to fish ponds when it is COLD. Swap the hooks.

Where I fish in SE Virginia, you are better off in the wood.  Yes, it can get frustrating, but you quickly learn how to get over the bait and shake it free most of the time.  I always tell my buddy that if we aren't hanging up, we aren't in the right spot.  Just offering another view for fishing the blades.  Good luck.

What rod and line are you using? I noticed that you are fishing a spinning outfit.

Also, if you fish the BBZ 2.5" shad like a blade bait on a cast ( not vertically) it can be deadly if the water is shallow. I was catching bass in half frozen ponds with that last February

I was.  I seem to do better with spinning gear.   Using 10 lb braid  (& a 10lb mono leader)  I have great sensitivity and can make very long casts.

Works for me.  Any decent medium spinning rod would probably work.

I use St Croix LTB and Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth sticks.

Cool, I just picked up a 7' M Fenwick Silver Hawk for $60 today at Cabela's.

This is a technique I've really grown to love the last several years.   My personal preference is a 7' MH casting rig with 17 pound flouro.   Once a fish is hooked, the finessey part goes out the window and the fish comes in the boat.  lol

A couple bladebait fish from today.................

A-Jay, Nice bass catch and video. What brand and model canoe are you in? Do you have an outrigger on it to keep it stable?

Thanks - It's an Old Town Predator square back - no longer on production.

Has a 40 inch beam - very stable.  No outrigger needed.

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

Nice fatty A Jay. I don't consciously use bade baits for smallies, but use them quire often for deep water walleye along with jigging spoons. Funny story, I was night fishing with my son many years ago off a pier in Door County. We were slamming smallies on everything we threw at them. He had a Bitzer Creek Zip lure tied on a line hanging above the water, the rod was just lying on the pier. A smallie jumped out of the water, grabbed the bait and pulled the rod into the lake. I jumped in after it, saved the rod and caught the bass.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

I put a hurting on a few of the local population of smallies yesterday.

All in the 3/4 ounce silver Buddy in 25 ft.

Mostly smaller fish with one over 4 lb.

Loading a brief video now. Be up in a bit.

A-Jay

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

Put the SIlver Buddy to work again yesterday.  The day started out Sunny but turned cloudy & then down right cold by the end of the day.

Smallies didn't seem interested in my presentations at all for quite a while.  Fished hard for 4 hours without a sniff.

But I hung tough.  Then the sun popped out briefly as I was working the bait up a wind blown drop.

I'd marked a few right there and as the bait got about half way up (from 35 - 25 ft) she whacked it but missed.  You'll see me whiff once in the video.  Fortunately she came back and I pinned her.

After a fairly long & cool day, I was happy get this one.

That place is 80 ft deep.

The surface water temp yesterday was holding at 48-49.

Most of the shallower lakes are a few degrees cooler.

I'll be fishing right up to when my casts start bouncing - then is pretty much done.

Well done AJ. Blade baits are awesome. I fished a blade today in 15-35 ft around schools of smelt.  Got to the lake at 11am and fished until 5 pm. Landed 9 smallies and 7 largemouth. Biggest 5 fish went 18 lbs 0 oz, 6 smallies between 3-4 lbs and 2 largemouth between 3-4 lbs. Lunker was a 3-13 smallmouth. Blade baits are great. I will be fishing them until ice up.
