Going to get this started so all our discussion about it doesn't get lost in the other thread.
First is the proposed 1 day deal in March. I think we have 2 real options, 1 Melvern and 2 Lake Shawnee. I don't think that Wyco is a real option because of the price of the boat/fish/trout permit. I think if we do Melvern it should be the end of March, if we do Shawnee it should be more mid-March so there will be more fish still in the lake. I think at Melvern you obviously have the potential to have another cold spring like last year where it could be really tough at Melvern. Shawnee as long as it's thawed the trout should be biting. I'm thinking we just take a vote again like last year for anyone wanting to be there, either post up your vote or send me a PM so I can tally them up. I'm going to put mine in for Lake Shawnee, maybe like March 15th?
Melvern-4
Shawnee-5
Second is the 2 day deal. My thinking with this is for us to go somewhere that is too far to do a single day trip. I think we should go somewhere with camping or hotels so everyone has the option to stay where they'd like. Like always, the main goal is for everyone to have fun and catch fish, which I think should be taking into consideration into where we go. I think having some stuff other than fishing to do would be a plus for anyone wanting to bring the family along as well. I think the 31st of May/1st of June was the weekend that was working the best for everyone. Again, like last year I think we should vote on it so everyone gets a say in it. I'll make a list of some lakes and if anyone wants to add any to the list just let me know. I'm going to put mine in for Grand Lake
Grand-6 1/2
Table Rock-1 1/2
Stockton
LOZ
Bull Shoals
Melvern
Milford
Beaver
Hazel Creek
Mozingo
Wilson
Shawnee. Grand.
My votes are Melvern and Grand.
Know nothing of Shawnee or any of the 2 day lakes, so Ill need to pick the brain of ppl that has been.
I vote Shawnee and grand lake
Melvern and no vote cause I won't be able to go
Theoretically if its at Grand, amd I wanted to arrange my family vacation aroound this time, give me some lodging options.

Well depending on how many people show up and if Jon's family allows us stay at their cabins, there may be room for them to stay there. Other than that, the city of Grove is the best option of places to stay. There's quite a few options close by that are reasonably priced. There's also Honey Creek State Park that has camping for a cheaper option.
Does the OK DNR have cabins like how KDWPT does at the bigger lakes? Ive looked at cabins at various places on Grand, like Pine Lodge, 158/night for a 4-5 person cabin in the woods, not lake front. Kinda steep for what I was thinking.
Shawnee/Grand.
Let me know about May so I have a number of people when I go to ask for the cabins.
I vote for Melvern and as for the 2-day, I really can't say. Never fished any of the lakes other than Melvern and Milford.

Getting to fish a new lake is part of the fun I'd think
I've fished all of them at least once so any questions you or anyone has about them I'll do my best to answer from my first hand experience.
Melvern for the one day and grand or rock for the two day
He said Bronco fans don't get to vote. Its in our constitution.
Panther fans??? Lolz. Or worse.... Im a Tottenham Hotspur fan!!!! (Hope you follow EPL Soccer sizzle)
a little but we are msl champs plus Tottenham soccer is still better then Bronco football
Shawnee in March
Melvern in April
Rock in May
Going for 3?

I'm cheering for the Broncos, and a Manning retirement He named 2 lakes so I split his vote, even my country educated self can do that math Now if we get guys wanting to give 3/32 of their vote to one lake and 5/16 to another and stuff like that we're screwed

Check out Longs resort in grove. We used to stay there wen I was a kid and my dad stayed a few years ago. It's a decent place with cabins, covered crappie dock and a boat ramp and the office was a small marina geared towards the crappie guys.
My x girlfriends parents have a house with a ski boat, bass boat and jet skis so I've spent lots of time on that lake my whole life I just hope that it doesn't skunk me again.
Honestly if anyone is thinking of making this the family vacation you may want to vote rock and take the fan to Branson it would give them something to do and places to eat
Especially if it rains

Pretty sure I caught my first fish of the trip when we were down there for the Classic out from under Long's Resorts Dock. We caught quite a few fish around that area.

I'm not sure if we have anyone planning on bringing their whole families with them? I know there's a couple guys planning on bringing their sons to fish with them but that's all I've heard of?
So I happen to know a guy on the rock who might be able to provide some lodging (and I would imagine he would do it for cheap) if he isn't completely booked up. Just throwing that out there.
He even posts here

I've got a free place to stay at on the rock now
Anyhow. It's been YEARS since i've been on grand. My grandparents have a house on the elk arm... My vote is there (pending I can actually do it).
But I would be seriously happy going to the rock as well. Even Loz if we could convince everyone to launch on a section of lake that isn't too busy (is there one? haha)
i like glacier arm the best easy to get to good fishing. u launch and go where ever and u can catch fish. im good where ever hows the polls looking clayton? post an updated version sucka

Where is the glacier arm? Is that maybe the glaize arm? Up the river is probably the least busy place on LOZ that time of year.

Grand is only 3 hours and it's a pretty straight shot. If we had only gone to the lake and then back home I would have only needed a tank down and one back. Shawnee is right in Topeka so it's not bad either.

For anyone interested in this video. Obviously very tough conditions and guys were still getting them pretty good. I found another clip of a guy complaining because he was catching so many 3 pounders and it was a lot of work to sort through all those for the 5's and 6's, poor guy
Maybe instead of trying to set this whole deal up on here we should pick a central place and all meet up one night and try to hammer out the details that why? Could just have anyone that wants to meet up and have a part in setting everything in stone? Just a thought, makes it a little easier and I don't have 15 pages of posts to try to sort through to make sure I'm being as fair as possible.

I was thinking somewhere in Olathe, probably the most centralized we can get for the guys that are going to attend. Probably a bar and grill/sports bar type place would be best, maybe like Austin's off 151st or somewhere like that? I'll try to let everyone know but if any of you guys read this and talk to any other members in the next day or so you might ask if they read it. A weeknight would probably work best so it hopefully won't be as packed, Thursday would work fine for me, around 6 or 7 I'm guessing would work best for most?
54th street grill and bar? I'm not partial to this place but the location would be good?
You posted while I was typing... Lol

Bring her out so she can meet some of the delinquents that you talk to on here and fish with sometimes. Unless she decides she doesn't want to be there, my wife and baby will probably be there. Might not be a bad thing, maybe if some of you guys brought your significant others they'd become friends and give everyone more time to fish?

My buddy and I are in for Thursday, Clayton and Jon just need to decide where we're going
Austin's in Olathe, Thursday night at 6. I just secured one cabin for that weekend, it sleeps 6 people. I'll know about the other by Thursday (sleeps 10-15). If nothing else there is plenty of room for a few tents. I would like to recommend everyone donate $20 or $30 bucks. They are allowing us to stay for free, but $10 to $15 bucks a night is nothing for lodging, plus we will be using their electricity fro charging battery's and all. The cabin has full kitchen and a big barbecue grill.
Sounds good bondo!

The food deal will be part of what we're going to have to discuss on Thursday. We could either have everyone bring what they want to eat and just cook for ourselves, or have everyone pitch in 5 or 10 bucks a person and make a grocery run in town and get stuff for everyone. For sure bring an extension cord and a power strip if you have one. Depending on how the cabin situation ends up, we may or may not have beds for everyone so that is yet to be figured out.
I think pitching in some money for food would be easier, instead of trying to transport everything in coolers and such.
Figure out gow many meals we are going to need and work out a menu.
Snacks for on the water can be brought by each team for themselves.
I have a "AeroBed" if needed.

That's kind of my thinking as well. Buy it down there and then we don't have a ton of coolers laying all over and taking up space in peoples trucks and all that mess. Snacks and drinks are a personal choice so everyone can take care of bringing what they want in those departments.
Now, clarify the fishing time. Are we leaving early in the morning, getting down at sun up or just after, fishing all day, staying the night then fishing the next day, come home that evening?

First time I saw one fished was last year at Beaver Lake. The shad is really light, but will work good on a spinning combo. I have three of the scatter cranks now and have caught fish on all of them. which one did you buy the crank or the scatter shad?

I've never had as many baits fall apart as the DT's, almost always the bill coming out of the bait. I've had them pop out while they were bumping the rocks and I've had the lip pull out while fighting fish, at least half a dozen times now. I do like the old Shad Raps, never had a problem with their durability, but I won't be buying anymore DTs unless they're real cheap.

Never had the problem you describe. Maybe I haven't thrown them enough or lose them too fast for that to happen? I've certainly heard of the durability problems you mentioned.

Yes it was!!!!
Alright, I'll try to give a run down of everything we discussed last night. We decided to try to do 3 different tournaments this spring. The first one is the Cabin Fever Trout tournament on Thursday, March 20th at Lake Shawnee in Topeka. This I think should just be a for fun deal, no weigh in or measuring fish. Since trout aren't hardy enough to cull, or even measure and release a lot of the time, we should either just fun fish, or we could do the 1 biggest fish caught. Either way, it should be a good way to beat the winter blues. Not going to do any cooking afterwards because it's probably going to be cold, but we could all grab something to eat somewhere in Topeka if we wanted to.
Second will be a 1 day at Melvern on Saturday, April 19th, with a backup day of the 20th if the weather is a wash the 19th. This will be the same deal as last time, heaviest 5 per boat, weight them on a digital scale and turn them loose. No dinner here either but I guess if we wanted to get brave we could go to Beto Junction and eat.
Finally, the 2 day will be at Grand Lake in Grove, Ok on May 31st and June 1st. We'll weigh fish just like we have been doing, 5 per day per boat, with the heaviest combined 2 day weight. We'll also do big bass for the 2 days. If there's a tie for first place for total weight, the winning team will be whichever team caught the biggest bass. If there's a tie for big bass, whoever's bass was longest will take it.
Bob and Mel were nice enough to let us use both of their cabins for this so we'll have bathrooms, showers, kitchens, everything we need really. I'm asking that everyone pitch in at least $20 a person to give to Bob and Mel for letting us stay and to cover our water and electric use. You can't camp for that cheap so it's really a heck of a deal. We might be able to fit everyone in the cabins but if not there's plenty of rooms for tents and plenty of people have them so we're good on lodging and beds. If anyone has a tent and/or air mattress, feel free to bring them so we have plenty of room and beds. Saturday night will be the only night we're planning on having a group meal. We're going to get a pork butt and smoke it, everyone can just pitch in some money at the lake to eat. This way all we have to do is reheat it and eat instead of starting charcoal and cooking burgers and hotdogs like normal. We can grab some sides and buns in Grove so no one has to worry about keeping food fresh on the way down there. Snacks, drinks, and breakfast will just be everyone bring their own. Sunday afternoon I'm sure everyone will just be wanting to get on the road so we won't be doing food that night. We're planning on going out of Wolf Creek Ramp right in Grove, about 10 or 15 minutes from the cabins. Myself, Jon, and I'm sure some others will be planning on being down there Friday to fish a little bit and get everything set up and ready and hopefully have a good fishing report for everyone.
One thing I forgot, Bob and Mel have asked that if anyone plans on drinking that we keep it in moderation. I don't think anyone was planning on making this a big drinking weekend but I know most everyone likes to have a drink after a day of fishing so just wanted to make sure everyone is aware of it.
Sounds good

It wouldn't hurt to bring your own blankets, pillows, towels, and TP. Not saying we'll need them, but not saying we won't either. We had plenty last time but there was only 7 of us then.

Don't have that quite figured out yet. I know Curt and Peter are both planning on bringing their boats but not sure if they're going to fish together or not. Right now the teams that I know we have are;
Scogg/Scrogglet
basshunter0731/Christopher

Like I said, not sure if Curt and Peter are fishing together or not and then Sizzle is waiting to see if Chris S can fish or not.
Ok, that clears a bit up. Thanks!!
Something I've noticed and think we should take into consideration, our launch area choice. I like Wolf Creek because it's nice and there's several lanes to launch quickly. Problem is, it's not very centrally located on the lake so it's going to be a long, long run to get down lake for those that are wanting to go that direction. Another option that is actually closer to the cabins would be Honey Creek State Park. The good thing about it is it's a little closer and a lot more centrally located and it's a free ramp. Bad thing about it is it's a 1 lane. Right now we only have 5 boats, so that wouldn't be bad and it looks like it's an easy ramp to get lined up and dump the boats in the water quickly. Just something I thought we should consider so everyone has plenty of options on where they want to fish without running for an hour.
i think launching from the big ramp is gona be out best bet for day one. and we could always launch from dam side the second day if we are heading out in the morning but its alot farther and alot of work to get cleaned up and out if we were to do that.
what about trailing? If we just set a launch time? and be back at the cabin at a set time?
As much as I'd like to make the trip to Grand, I can't get the time off. Maybe next year

Plus, if we do a 2 day combined weight tournament it wouldn't be very fair for whoever is leading if they happen to be catching fish at the upper end of the lake.

They did alright after they quit looking for grass mats to flip and traded in their shorts and flip flops for snowmobile suits I mean look at Chris Lane, blanked the first day, almost made the cut with one of the heaviest stringers of the tournament on day 2.
Can I get the address of the cabins so I can see it and the ramps
Fwiw I don't think a 10 minute drive one way or another will be a big deal to me
You can pm me the address if you don't want it public
Another thing if everyone can it would be cool to post your fish as soon as u catch them like match fishing.

right about here is one, the other is just down the hill by the lake.

Not all of us have 150hp motors either Takes a long time for me or the other guys with the smaller motors to get very far on a big lake like that.
I like the match fishing idea. I need to get everyone's cell number. I think we should send pic's of the fish on the scale also.

I'm unfamiliar with how match fishing works?
its a running update on who is catching what. You should check it out on outdoor channel.
that's not it
On 2/4/2014 at 7:02 PM, basshunter0731 said:that's not it
Yeah that looks fun but wouldn't really work with several boats.
Basically we just want to send pictures to everyone when a weighed fish is caught then?
Sure it would work with several boats.
Create an event on Facebook... Post every time you catch a fish with either a running total of the weight of every fish you catch over 12" long (match fishing) or keep an updated total of your boats biggest 5
We could also take pics of every fish on the scales but I'd like to think I trust you guys and only want to see the bigguns!

Your only allowed to fish jerkbaits. That's your penalty for going over the 150hp limit

Can I fish other baits if I agree to not go faster than 55?
If you keep it under 55, you can dropshot a hula popper.
I'd take the penalty and smile if I could run 70!
each boat should have a notary on board to prove we caught the fish
a picture on the scale on the ruler and the days newspaper with the date showing
Need a witness for the Notary.

Seems like that would take some of the excitement away from final weigh in? Maybe have someone text pictures until noon to leave everyone wondering at the final weigh in?
I can't post pictures to FB from my phone either.

Are we seriously that worried about people fibbing about their fish? Most phones keep track of the date and time a picture was taken so we could check it that way if we're really worried if someone is telling the truth or not. I'm just going to have fun and fish and if I win yeah go team! Like I said last year, I don't think we have any egos big enough to need to lie about the weight of a fish in a "just for fun" tournament.

Oh, Curt told me my punishment for having a 225 on the back of my boat was only being allowed to fish jerkbaits. Jerkbaits will be out of the equation for the grand tournament. And Just between you and me, if I make it to melvern, I might try throwing a spybait

It is an Omega just not the pro. I was told it's exactly the same reel but the pro has 2 spools so you could change line

The pro is black instead of silver also. Hate to have such a sweet reel and have it not match that rod
I can honestly say I have fished with an Omega and it is leaps and bounds ahead of most spincasting reels.
Now that's an interesting thought though. I know when they used to have some big bass challenge show on TV where the pros fished for a day on El Salto to catch the biggest fish, they had to catch their first fish of the day using a Coke can with line wrapped around it or take a penalty. Should we make everyone catch their first fish of the day on a spincast reel before they can start using their normal gear

That is if you have a spincast reel.....which I don't. I'm sure I could find a snoopy rod at wally world for cheap, guess I need to buy one at some point for my son anyway
Don't do that to the poor kid, just start him straight on spinning gear.
I have an extra spincast reel. It's a Daiwa Goldcast, next to the Omega it's as good as it gets in the spincasting world. I'll be rocking the Zebco 733 on my 7' 6" MH Daiwa flipping stick

Lake Shawnee is slated to be stocked with 7,000 pounds of rainbow trout next weekend, according to a press release from Shawnee County Parks and Recreation.
The lake will be closed following the Feb. 22 stocking until 6 a.m. March 1 to give the trout ample time to disperse and acclimate to their new surroundings. They will be released at the main boat ramp.
Trout must be a minimum of 11 inches in length, and at least 600 will be in excess of 4 pounds each. Some of the trout will be tagged, so if a tagged trout is caught, the tag should be removed and brought to the Shawnee County Parks and Recreation office, 3137 S.E. 29th, to redeem a prize.

1/8-1/4oz Little Cleos, Castmasters, or Super Dupers. Last year they really liked gold but we fished lots of cloudy days so that may have had something to do with it. I'm sure they'd eat inline spinners but we never fished one. Ned rigs worked pretty well, as did small cranks like little countdown Rapalas or Rapala Ultra Light cranks. Jon caught several on a Luck E Strike G5 along with some largemouth. Small crappie jigs and micro jigs either cast or fished under a bobber all worked really well also. I've been tying up a bunch of trout jigs so I'll try to remember to post some pictures of what they look like. If I remember right almost all our biggest fish ate the Little Cleos. I had a monster follow a deep diving jerkbait to the boat also.
I caught a few on the little SK Slab Hammer crankbaits
We're going to have to hope for a warm spell or we're going to be ice fishing for the trout get together!

I'm guessing the same way Wyco does, back a backhoe down the ramp and knock a hole in the ice and dump the fish in. I got from a reliable source that it is 100% for sure stocked and open as of the 1st though.

I think Clayton and Curtis are going Thursday let me know if you want a partner I need to learn the lake a little and maybe we can out fish them
I won't be making it to Shawnee either. But for what is worth last year we had our best luck off the big radius shore line off of golf course. Located at the south east side off the lake. You can follow the shore into a good sized cove but always had better luck out towards the bigger water casting towards that shore area. Also had the best luck with the small yellow rooster tails. Hope this can help some of ya. If you look at a map it's easy to see where I'm describing. Good luck and have fun.
If you're planning on being at Lake Shawnee next week either let me know on here or shoot me a PM. I think the fishing should be pretty good by next week when the water is a few degrees warmer hopefully. More than anything I hope nobody has to deal with the special group of people that were on the water yesterday. This is a family friendly forum so I can't really say what I thought about them other than I don't know how someone can even operate a boat or a fishing rod with their heads that far up their backsides.
I think for times we should shoot for 8am-2 or 3 pm unless everyone wants to start and end different times. We'll do a weight tourny again. Trout are pretty fragile so I'd suggest either just popping the scale hook through their bottom jaw and try not to touch them too much (unless you're keeping them) or weight them in your net and then subtract the weight of your net from the total weight. Also remember if you're keeping them, once they're in the livewell you can't cull them like in a bass tournament. Also, once you reach your boats limit you can't keep fishing for trout.
Since this is a trout tournament I'm going to make a couple exceptions to the normal bass fishing rules.
1.You can troll
2.Live bait and prepared bait (powerbait) will be allowed, BUT!, if you choose to fish either the fish you catch on them MUST go on your card towards your total weight and that weight can not be culled off your card. So if you catch a 1 pound trout as your 5th fish on powerbait and it's your smallest fish, if you catch a bigger fish it can only cull off the weight of your second smallest fish. This allows anyone who wants or needs to fish with livebait or powerbait the opportunity but also levels the playing field a little for those who are only going to fish lures. I'd also highly suggest if you plan on fishing livebait or powerbait that you don't release those fish. They normally have the hook swallowed and die shortly after release. I really don't want anyone leaving dead fish floating all over the lake. If if a fish does die on you, keep it even if you don't want it, someone will take it.
As of right now the only ones I know that are planning on being there are;

Well for those of you wanting to be there, we'll see you at 8am at the northeast ramp at Lake Shawnee! Make sure you have you sails ready, looks like it's going to be windy
They have lowered the wind forecast some, it's now 9-20 and gusts under 15 until after noon.
Have fun, guys! Hope to see some good reports afterwards.
Well the trout deal went pretty well, all things considered. We only had the 3 boats show up so it was even less formal than usual. Curt and I started on the dam and I put 2 in the boat pretty quick, one on a Ned, one on a home made trout jig under a bobber. We tried a spot that was good last year and struck out. In the 45 minutes it took us to do that, the wind went from zero to over 20mph and white capping. I missed a few bites on my jig and bobber before we tucked into a little cut with a small dock and started cleaning up on them with jigs and a little cleo. Caught a few bass there too. Jon, Jared, and Jackson joined us in our somewhat protected area and we decided to leave since the action had slowed by then. Tried a bunch more spots and never caught another trout until we fished the boat ramp as we were loading up. Jackson had fished all day without a fish, apparently he just needed one of my homemade trout jigs because he whacked 3 good ones right off the boat ramp dock
Curt and I had first with 12lbs 14ozs, RJ had big fish with a 3lb 6oz (I think) trout. It was a little slower than last year still but quite a few fish were still caught but no real monsters.
Looking forward to the Razor Clam Classic next month!
I thought you had the biggest fish Clayton. Mine was just over 3lbs (3.06lbs). However, Sizzle was convinced my scale was weighing his fish light, maybe mine too?

Ah, I thought he said it was 3lbs 6ozs. My biggest was only 3lbs 1oz on Curt's scale but it only measured in whole ounces and it may round up once they're over a certain amount.
Less than 3 weeks from Melvern, do we have an idea who's fishing, and who's fishing with who. We're not doing eating afterwards is what I read in the earlier posts I believe.

I'm not positive who all is fishing but I know a few and will try to get it figured out for sure to get a list up. No food afterwards but we could go to Beto Junction if we wanted to get some food afterwards. The people/teams I'm pretty sure are going to be there as of right now;

I'm not going to make it, unless you get bad weather the 19th. Only weekend we could do my daughters bday party. I'll be at grand though.
And by the way the 20th is Easter.

I guess if we get bad weather (wind) on the 19th we'll have to have it on the river pond below the dam , or Olathe.

Simple fix, thanks
Haven't used it since the fall get together. Taking it out to Olathe tonight to get the motor running and check the battery to see if it's charging. Hopefully it was just dead.
Its super bad to let a battery get cold while its low but hope its fine that is expensive for sure
I agree. Took it to Olathe last night and the motor started up just fine, but it was only reading 13 volts when the motor was running. I guess I'll just have to charge after every use. Did catch a couple including a CHUNKY 15"-er. Picture doesn't actually show how fat this fish was.
Does it have an alternator? Most don't...
It does. '93 Evinrude Intruder 175hp. I'm not going to pretend like I know anything about this stuff, but from what my dad was telling me it should read right around 14 volts if it were charging properly.
On 4/11/2014 at 9:37 PM, Hi Salenity said:Does it have an alternator? Most don't...
I thought most did. My Merc XR6 did, and my current Merc 60hp four-stroke does as well. I get about 14V on my voltimeter when running the big motor, so I know that it's charging. I also hook all three of my batteries up to a charging system whenever it is sitting at home or in storage.

100" of fish on your scorecard won't do you much good since we're weighing them again
Go ahead and put me down for this Saturday. It's completely dependent on whether or not my wife gives birth this week or not, but I'm hoping to make it. I also hope to make it down there on Friday for a little pre-fishing since it's Good Friday and I have the day off.

So I'm thinking we get the party started at 7:30 and fish until 3. Anyone have any problems with those times?
They've bumped the winds back up to 13-22 for Saturday. Would it be a problem for anyone to change the times back an hour? 6:30-2 may be nicer weather to fish.
Not to mention Peter has to leave at 2 and I'd be without my partner. LOL
Earlier does look better. My vote would be to move it up to a 6:30 start.
I'm going tomorrow and they're saying NNE at 6-10, hopefully that happens.
If we start at 6:30 it's just starting to get light right about then. I have no problem with it other than the fact my partner isn't going to be happy having to get up that early I think we may want to make trailoring an option as well with the wind. We can all meet at the normal state park ramp but if you don't want to launch from that ramp you can drive to whichever ramp you want to use and launch, just have to be back at the state park ramp by take out? Maybe prevent a few people from getting soaked from long runs down the lake in a strong wind (myself especially ).
This will be a weight touranment just like last time. Going on the honor system, must weigh them on a DIGITAL scale, and I think we should probably have a 12 or 15 inch minimum length limit to weigh a fish, just to make it even more interesting. I'll try to remember cards and pens for everyone this time
The marina ramp is closer to everyone's house by about 10 minutes if your partner needed a few more minutes of sleep...
On 4/17/2014 at 7:34 PM, Hi Salenity said:The marina ramp is closer to everyone's house by about 10 minutes if your partner needed a few more minutes of sleep...
She'll be able to sleep the whole way down there and I'm sure she will. I have no intentions of launching from the marina but if that's where everyone else wants to launch from to try to combat the wind (or further down at Arrow Rock, kind of midway down the lake and still on the south side?) That would probably be even closer still since you don't have to go as far up 75 to get to it.
I swore I looked at the weather last night and it showed 11mph winds for Saturday but I just looked again and saw 26mph winds!!!
Sheesh!!!! Good thimg Ill be in Chris boat!!! My tin wpuld get shoved EVERYWHERE!!
I didnt get to prefish Melvern this year... but Im going to the local smallie lake to try and get a bead on temps, congregation points, tactics.
So is it official then, 6:30 start time?

Have fun fellas. That's what they forecasted for clinton last week... and it was a nightmare. 2-3 foot rollers.
I hope it gets better by tomorrow, because it sucked yesterday. The wind was stronger than they said it was supposed to be and it was down right cold. We caught white bass fairly steady all day but really couldn't find the brown fish. Did get a 16" walleye. We caught maybe 6 smallies between us and most of those came on a 50 yard stretch of bank. All fish were caught on jerkbaits except for a little smallie in the marina cove on a shakyhead. This, unfortunately, was the biggest

Fished Melvern today with a buddy. My report is a lot like cbass12. It wasn't nearly as good as I expected. Boated 4 smallmouth and 2 largemouth between the two of us. Caught whites regularly, and boated a keeper walleye that my buddy kept. Two of my smallmouth were over 2.5lbs (2.62 and 2.66 lbs). One of my largemouth was a 2lb'r, which I caught back in the standing timber . Heartbreaker of the day came at the dam, again. I hooked into an absolute pig of a smallmouth that I know would have gone at least 4 lbs. Fought it for a long time, and finally got it to the boat. It did a couple of jumps right as I was reaching down for it and came unbuttoned! Hopefully things go better for everyone tomorrow, but I think you're doing really well to get over 10lbs.
Water temps 53-56
My biggest at 2.66 lbs on a jerkbait.
Still hoping to see you all out there tomorrow at 6:30.
By the way, I tested my rapala scale tonight with one that is super accurate, and I know mine is right on. If you want to check yours against mine let me know at the ramp.

Why would I want to do that? Then you'll all see that mine says 1 pound before anything is even put on it

At least you found some bigger fish, biggest we had was maybe 14". I think the weather is improving the mood of the fish (at least that's what I'm hoping).

That's a double OUCH!!!!!!
Well despite the wind and the chilly start it turned out pretty good today. Jerkbaits and Ned rigs ruled the day. Super fluke and his brother came out on top when the dust settled with 16.87lbs, great sack of smallies guys.
CCCDrew and his dad just barely fell short with 16.26lbs. Nicole and I were third with 14.72 followed by Hi Salenity/Wachati with 12.5lbs, Cbass12/Chris with 10.48, All day/basshunter0731 with 10.41, RJ_986 with 5.5, and Chris S/sizzlefry with 4.62.
Nicole and my day started extremely slowly, our big fish by noon was only barely over 2 pounds, by weigh in that was our smallest fish. All our fish were on jerkbaits except for my biggest fish that ate a Ned on the dam I was positive she was a drum or catfish and I never felt the bite or set the hook, just tried to reel in and she didn't let me.
My batteries were fading fast by noon so we went to the ramp cove and just started going to the back of the cove and drifting back out. I caught a 2.75 and 3.63 doing that. The bigger one was a keeper and there was only 20 minutes until weigh in so she rode back to the ramp to get her picture taken with the big gal.
And the whole group!
First, a big THANK YOU to Bluebasser86 for putting this all together and for the bladed jigs as prizes.
Second, I think I finally lived up to my screen name today of SuperFluke. This was only my third ever fishing "tournament", and I had never caught a keeper in a tourney before today. My brother will tell you that fishing ranks pretty low on his list of things he enjoys or is good at, so we really were out there just trying to have fun. I convinced him to come at 10:00 p.m. last night. I guess that I have spent quite a few days on Melvern recently, so I felt pretty good that a jerkbait would be the right bait to be throwing.
Kudos to CCCDrew and his dad for putting up a really good number. We really thought we were safe and were sick of fighting the wind, so we hit the ramp early. Nice job, fellas.
All fish we "weighed" in were between 3 and 4 lbs. We culled out our last 2lb'r near the end of the day when my brother got into one right at the boat and somehow landed it. All these fish were caught on Strike King 200 series jerkbaits. First one on the dam, next two were on the marina rip rap, fourth came in a protected pocket that was loaded with smallies, and the final fish was in a main lake pocket.
My biggest at 3.83lbs on a jerkbait near the dam
My brother's biggest, which turned out to be the one that put us over the top
Really fun day. As good as it was, I hope that you all catch even bigger bags out at Grand next month!
Thanks Blue for the good time I would have liked to have done better but I suck at fishing . I am taking a break from fishing forever or until Curtis calls me next Friday to go to LaCygne

Of all the places I can think of to go to for breaking a dry spell, La Cygne is certainly not on that list
Friday looks windy,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but Tuesday?
It was a lot of fun today despite the hurricane we decided to fish in. Oddly enough, all our fish came on the Ned rig. We only had one bite on a jerkbait. Even the whites didn't want it from us. Going into the last hour, we only had 4 bass over 12" then we found some on a windy bank just killing the Ned rig. Here is a list of our 5 biggest weights and pictures of the two biggest.
3.81 lbs, 3.** lbs, 3.21 lbs, 3.04 lbs, and 2.57 lbs
Looks like it was a blast, it's awesome to see what you guys have put together. I'm hoping that come next year's get-together me and my buddy will be able to join in on the fun (and possibly compete).
Love all the pics!
My biggest 3 from the day. Chris didn't catch a smallmouth until the last 10 minutes of the day and it barely measured.

Man it's tough finding any kind of decent report for Grand. Best thing I've found is guys raving about how good grand is from April-June and all you have to do is tie a jig on and start pitching docks, I think I can do that!

I can handle that. I think my partner might have a tough time with that though......
Ill tie on a senko for my partner ... let him go to town!!!!
Every trip for me from now till Grand is gonna be pitching to willow. Maybe I can learn to skip!!
i started off side casting to skip under docks then once i got that going good for me i could under swoop cast as the pros call it (me)! dont get me wrong i have my fair share of nest in the reel but man once u get the hang of it and you get that bit from way back in the dock you thank your self! cus no way u were going to catch that fish other wise.

Give him a spinning rod with braid and a tube jig or Senko, he should be good there. Or just give him a crankbait and let him grind it through the rocks until he snags a drum

A lot of the docks have stalls down there, shouldn't need to skip too much. Plus there's tons of rock banks with no docks at all.
Don't forget your 10xd's or your lucky craft mag cranks.

I haven't been to grand in 10 years but if I remember correctly it's muddy?
It looks like we're going to have great weather. 60s for lows and 80s for highs and winds around 10mph
Can I get the name of the ramp you guys are launching from on Friday? Or an address to it.
On 5/24/2014 at 6:36 AM, Hi Salenity said:I haven't been to grand in 10 years but if I remember correctly it's muddy?
Upper end is muddy but the lower end is pretty clear. Last time we were there the dam had probably 4-5 feet of visibility. Of course if they get a ton of rain that may change it.
On 5/24/2014 at 11:24 AM, Hi Salenity said:Can I get the name of the ramp you guys are launching from on Friday? Or an address to it.
I think Chris and I are going to launch from Honey Creek State Park unless it's really bad on Thursday, then we may try somewhere down by the dam. Honey Creek is right in Grove, OK and it's a free ramp.
It looks like the Grove city ramp has 2 tournament on Saturday so we may want to stay away from that ramp or tag along and try to learn something.
I found this and ute was updated yesterday.
Lake elevation is at 743.3 ft. Average water clarity is at 5.35 ft. Average surface temperature is 68.09 degrees F.
I'm a little confused? This says we need to have our "vessels"? Inspected. I called a boat dealer on grand and they said he's never heard of having a bass boat inspected?
All vessels must have Oklahoma registration and license by June 30 each year. Boats currently registered in another state may be used on these lakes for a 60-day period without registering them. If the boat remains in Oklahoma for more than 60 calendar days, it must be registered in Oklahoma. Registration stickers must be displayed on the front port and starboard portion of the vessel.
All boats kept or operated on GRDA lakes shall be inspected by GRDA’s Police. A safety inspection sticker shall be placed on the port front portion of boat. This is a free inspection.
Vessel Safety Check Program
The Grand Lake Sail & Power Squadron has a Vessel Safety Check Program offering free boat inspections for the Grand Lake area. For more information visit their web site or call 1-918-786-4830.
I think that's just if you're living in OK. I didn't have to do anything with mine last time.
I didnt know. "It says ALL BOATS kept or OPERATED on"
And it'd from the GRDA.
I called the GRDA Police and asked if we needed our boats inspected and he said NO.

I don't know what all the excitement is about, I've done hundreds of searches at work and never enjoyed it, but I've never been on the receiving end so maybe I'm missing something

Oh come on, I know there's a few times I've enjoyed it. But I'll admit that those times I had bad intentions for the individual that was being searched......... singing soprano afterwards if you know what I mean
Those the days you wish you had "Andre The Giant" hands?
I've already said too much.....

I think they get back later today
It was a great weekend. Fishing wasnt stellar for us, but we had a blast. My biggest was 3-2. Xander's wss 3-10.
Friday we got 2 each. Fished 4 hours in the evening. Saturday we had the numbers, but no size. He lost a tank of a Spot that jumped and threw his Ned. Atleast 3lb. Sunday was quality, not quantity. He had 6-2 between 2 keepers. I squeeked a 2-8 to wash the skunk off. The hosts were great. Thank you so much!!

We had a lot of fun and caught a lot of fish. Chris and I got down early Thursday and put in at Wolf Creek. Chris caught a stocky 16" fish on a buzzbait his 3rd cast and that was the last bass either of us caught until about 10. We fished all kinds of baits and different areas looking for fish with a couple misses and lost fish to show for it. We ran down towards Honey Creek and decided to stop in a smaller cove on the way there. I had been fishing a 1/2oz brush jig in Texas craw but decided to switch to a 7/16oz finesse jig in PB&J. We opted for a bank with chunk rock mixed with small gravel in hopes of finding fish that were just finishing spawning. They must have been as we finally started to catch some fish! I found a brushpile with my jig and after 3 repeated cast finally caught my first bass of the trip.
After that I went on a hot streak with several more fish, most of them keepers, that were thumping my jig.
One of my biggest from Thursday. You can see from my line that it had swallowed my jig too. Most of the banks we fished looked like the one in the background with a little more chunk rock mixed and and quite a few docks.
We ran to Honey Creek and decided to crank the riprap of the bridge, that was a good move, lots of fish like this one on a DT6.
Also caught a couple nice ones off the Honey Creek Resort dock pilings. After that it got really tough tough. I think we went without a keeper, and not many shorts either, for the next few hours. After hitting several spots in Honey Creek we ran to Courthouse Hollow where the cabin is. The first cut we tried produced 3 keepers on a wacky rig. When we came out that cut it had started to lightning and thunder so we ran back and loaded up.
Friday we made the drive to the dam to fish new water. We decided to start in Duck Creek, best move we made. We had 12-15 pounds in the boat in the first 15 minutes, catching at least one keeper and up to 3 off almost every dock we fished in the first little cut. Wacky rigs and poppers were doing serious work in the morning. Chris got our biggest spot of the trip out from under a walkway on a wacky rig.
The walkways and banks that looked like the one behind him in 8-14 feet of water were key for us. Our plastics had to have some purple in them to, from purple color to purple flake. Friday was a crazy day with between 75-100 fish coming to the boat on a variety of baits. It actually got to the point we were seeing what they wouldn't eat on our shakyheads or Rocker heads, we didn't find much they wouldn't eat. Over half the fish we caught were keepers as well. We tried Drowning Creek for awhile and only caught a couple dinks and one keeper before we went to Lawhead Hollow. Keepers started coming to the boat quickly again including our biggest of the day at 3.96 pounds on a magnum trick worm and Rocker head.
Saturday we decided to go back to Duck after the great day on Friday. We had to work a lot harder for them Saturday but the quality was a little better. We had a limit by about 8:30 and culled one shortly after that before hitting a long dry spell of either shorts or no fish. We ran around to some different areas we hadn't fished before and found nothing. With about 2 hours left we ran back to the same stretch of docks in Duck, doing the same thing, and culled 2 more times including our second biggest of the day. Chris and I ended up with 15.78 pounds for day 1.
Scroggs and Zander had a successful day with both of them catching keepers.
Sunday we decided to have everyone launch from the same ramp in Courthouse Hollow near the Cabins. Chris and I had very little to go off since we hadn't fished there much but we decided to look for stuff that looked the same and it paid off. We ran into Dinosaur and fished into a little cut. Biggest problem we were having was short fish. I was catching short spots about every cast with a Zell pop and wacky rig. Lost a keeper largemouth at the boat on a wacky rig before boating a keeper on the Zell pop. We fished all the way to the back of the cut before Chris caught a solid fish on a 10" worm. We picked up another keeper on a wacky rig before running over to the east side of Shangri-La Marina. We caught 3 more keepers, including our biggest of the day, and culled twice, all on a 10" candy bug Zoom Ol' Monster on a Rocker head. Ran to one more cove where we culled again before heading back to Courthouse where we culled one last time about 5 minutes before weigh in. Chris and I had almost 30 pounds in 2 days for first place.
Jon and Christopher were in second with around 25 pounds and Christopher had big bass for the weekend with a 4lb 15oz fish on a wacky rig.
The motley crew that was left by final weigh in.
