I know with some of us having 20+ inches of snow on the ground after today it may not seem like it but spring isn't far off, time to plan the spring KC Classic! I'm thing last week of April/first week of May (04/27, 05/04) if that works for everyone that is interested? The last 2 we've gone to Melvern and had good success, and I'm willing to go back if that's where the majority want to go but I have a few other lakes we could go to this time around including Perry, Ft. Scott, Bourban State Lake, or Mozingo. Let me know what you guys think of those dates and we'll start getting this thing planned to help us forget that all the lakes are still frozen
For those of you that haven't come to one of the previous get togethers be prepared to have fun! It's a free bragging rights paper tourny (no weigh in, just measuring fish), with food and drinks afterwards. No entry fee and no prizes for the tournament, it's just for fun and bragging rights afterwards. The only thing you'll be asked to contribute is some food or drinks if you're planning on staying and eating and some gas money for your boater if you're fishing as a nonboater, especially since it's already over $3 a gallon.
Tournament rules/regs:
April 27th 2013
Start time-6am
End time-2pm
We'll be launching from the East state park ramp on the north side of the lake nearest the dam. If you want to launch from another ramp you can, you'll be allowed to drive to another ramp just before launch and then you have to be back at the state park ramp at 2pm.
Standard BASS rules apply (no live bait/1 rod per person/fish must be caught following all state laws). Fish are measured with mouth closed, bumped to the front edge of the board with the tail pinched, measure to the closest 1/4". All black bass (large, small, spots) qualify. Measurements are on the honor system (it's for fun and I don't believe anyone on here has an ego big enough to feel the need to exaggerate to win nothing other than bragging rights). Feel free to take pictures of your fish to show off afterwards and/or weigh them but it isn't required for the weigh in. If you show up with 5 18-20 inch smallmouth on your card and no pictures you better be ready to answer some questions though It will be the total lengths of the longest 5 fish caught per boat/team. Doesn't matter if one person caught all of them, it's the overall length of the 5 longest combined. We're only doing measurements to prevent killing fish by carrying them around in a livewell all day. Plus there probably wouldn't be many fish brought in with the 18" length limit on smallmouth anyways.
The main objective here is for everyone to catch some fish and have a good time and get to meet some of the guys from the board so remember to be courteous to everyone involved and others on the water. There's 7,000 acres for us to spread around on so if someone is catching fish please don't park on top of them unless you get the ok from them to share the spot regardless of if they're in the tournament or not.

I would be interested in coming to the spring event. I am sure I could count on my father in law in as well. I would prefer April 27th as we have a tourney the first weekend in March.
My vote would be for Melvern but I haven't fished any of the other lakes. Would love to get some spring time smallmouth!!
cant wait I should be available if Chris is.
im in for when every and i guess blue are u my partner idc as long as there is a boat im in and fishing and dont care what lake as long as there is water and fish
Me and C-Roy will try to make it up from the Joplin area!

Good deal, not sure if you had a typo or if you misread but the two dates I listed were April 27th or May 4th if that makes a difference on when you could make it.

If we go to one of the smaller lakes we have several members that have smaller boats that are capable of handling just fine so if Chris can't make it I'm sure we can find someone else to pair you with.

If we go to one of the smaller lakes you may end up having to be a boater depending on who all decides to show up.

Sounds good, stay tuned for further details on when and where.
A few more options on lakes, Mound City, Critzer, or Bone Creek. Let me know what you guys think on the lakes or if you want any more info on any of them to help make your vote.
I'm in! I'm not picky on a time or place just give me soft water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ya, just a typo on my post. I wont be able to make it to the MAY date
Thanks Clayton for getting this going!!!
I'm in. My vote is for melvern.
i say we do a vote and just send it to clayton in a pm
1 melvern
2 mazingo
3 bone creek
4 perry
5 critzer
6 mound city
7 fort scott
8 bourbon county state
I agree with voting on the lake. My vote goes to Melvern since the smallmouth will be more active than the largemouth in cooler waters. As for the date, I may be able to do April 27th, but I cannot do May 4th. May 4th is my wedding date and I don't think my fiancee would be too happy if I am fishing.
Send me a PM with your vote for lake and date.
1 melvern
2 mozingo
3 bone creek
4 perry
5 critzer
6 mound city
7 fort scott
8 bourbon county state
9 Wabunsee
We'll probably be looking at Spawn/Post spawn conditions for largemouth and post spawn conditions for smallmouth.
Melvern-most of you know Melvern pretty well, pretty easy to catch fish with a mix of all three species and some big fish available
Mozingo-1,000 acres with lots of standing timber and grass. Largemouth only with lots and lots of fish to be caught and it produces quite a few fish over 8lbs in tournaments every year. Mainly a flipping, cranking lake.
Bone Creek-Little over 500 acres, mainly standing timber with some grass. Largemouth only with lots of little fish and few bigger ones. Can be tough to fish because of the abundance of trees. Mainly a flipping, cranking lake. Good topwater bites most mornings.
Perry-11,000 acres, mainly rocks, clay, and some timber and brushpiles. Largemouth and smallmouth with a good population and great average size for largemouth and big versions of both. Can be tough at times but when it's good, it's really good. Mainly a plastics and cranking lake.
Critzer-220 acres with 180 acres of standing timber, almost too thick in areas. Lots of fish with a mix of Largemouth and a few smallmouth. Biggest fish sampled from a lake came from Critzer at almost 9lbs. Plastics and jigs are about all you can fish.
Mound City-180 acres with some standing timber, weeds, and rocks. Largemouth only with good numbers of fish and plenty of big ones, I've seen them over 10lbs from this lake. They will eat about anything but plastics, cranks, and chatterbaits are best.
Ft.Scott-360 acres, mainly rocks, weeds, and lots of docks. Largemouth and spots with good numbers of both and some good quality largemouths. They'll eat about anything but jigs and plastics catch a majority of my fish from this lake.
Bourbon State Lake- 103nacres but it fishes much larger. Weeds, laydowns, and rocks are the main cover. A good mixture of largemouth and spots with amazing numbers of fish and a few bigger ones. You can catch fish on anything you feel like catching fish on at this lake with nothing really working better than anything else.
Wabunsee-216 acres with tons of docks and lots of rocks. A good mixture of largemouth and smallmouth with good numbers and great sizes of both, probably state records of both in this lake. Jigs, plastics, and cranks all work well on this lake. The main downside is the day use fee and boat inspection prior to launching a boat.
If anyone has a lake they want to add to the list let me know and I'll add it on here.
HILLSDALE!!!!!!!!!
On 2/28/2013 at 3:18 AM, Hi Salenity said:HILLSDALE!!!!!!!!!
I 2nd that vote!! With gas at $4 a gallon and we could all stay at Blues house!!!!
I've fished some smaller tourneys on mound/critzer. It works ok depending on how many boats you get.
At any rate, I'll do my best to make this one.
Im in for April date. Ill be in KC May 4-5 for bowling tourney. Prefer Melvern due to closer to me. But open for whatever. If yall pick heavy timber lake, Ill bring my second yak for someone to use to get back in where your power boats wont.
I vote Hillsdale for the CHALLENGE!!!!!
If you're looking for a lake that is close that is also a challenge I'd rather go to La Cygne, at least I know there's bass in there. This is supposed to be a fun tournament, I think that kind of rules Hillsdale out Seriously, if that's where everyone wants to go then that's where we'll have it. Right now I only have two PM'd official votes, one for Bourban, one for Melvern.
I'm gonna vote for ft Scott. More likely ill be able to make it there vs the 3.5hr drive to melvern from here
Lake votes
Melvern-8
Bourban-1
Ft.Scott-4
Mozingo-1
1 more for Fort Scott lake
My whole deal is that any place other than Melvern on that list, I'll have to stay the night. Or with In-Laws.
On 2/28/2013 at 2:14 PM, Mr_Scrogg said:My whole deal is that any place other than Melvern on that list, I'll have to stay the night. Or with In-Laws.
So I'm guessing your vote goes for Melvern?
Lol not going to vote cause there are other lakes I want to fish. Like Critzer, Bourbon, Mound. Lol Ill let fate decide. Hahahaa
This sounds like a blast for sure. I should be able to go for either date depending on what the Army decides to throw at me around that time. I like a few others im sure would like to be able to tag along on someones boat if possible. I dont know much about any of these lakes ill have to look them up and cast my vote.
jk on Hillsdale im in for melvern or ft scott
Blue I am to blame for Hillsdale jokes!!!

Wouldn't have guessed! My main thought is several guys have smaller boats that would be fine on most any lake but may be a little too small for Melvern or other big lakes. Obviously not an issue if enough guys with bigger boats sign up but just something to consider.
I'm ok with fishing Melvern from the yak, done it many times. Wind will be the determining factor for me.
Smaller lakes are usually more sheltered from the wind. Never seen any of the other lakes on the list. Friend of mine that fishes from a kayak has fished Critzer quite a few times though. He loves that little lake.
I can probably be a boater this time around so I will vote for Ft. Scott. I will have to make sure of this. If I do boat I will be dropping anchor a lot and fishing areas very thoroughly. I simply don't have the trolling motor to power around lakes, especially larger lakes in wind. I have an old wondertroll 606 lol.
I am voting for Melvern, with the April 27th date. Will be building a deck with my Dad the first week of May.
Melvren
I'm checking on the date, I may have a pinewood derby
Wish I could go, but I don't see a weekend free until August, for me. While scheduling things far out, think about the Leavenworth Bass Clubs Fishing for Freedom event, October 12 & 13 - 2013.
Last year, I made a long weekend out of it, got down to Truman early Thursday morning, 3 full days of fishing by myself and took a veteran fishing on Sunday. I had fun and met people I still correspond with from time to time. Several good free meals are involved, my major expenses were lodging & gas. Many motels in the area are familiar with the event and I got a room discount at the Hidden Lake Motel without even asking - they asked me if I was there for the Wounded Warrior project.
If you've got a boat that you feel is safe enough for Truman Lake, I'd encourage everyone to participate in this event.

Ask Sizzle about the ride in the 4 foot rollers as we ran like mad back to the ramp at Hillsdale 3 weeks ago? First outing last year Melvern was a little choppy
I'll check with my fishing partner, but I am feeling like this is one that we could make on either date. My vote would be for Melvern.

Melvern
Does it have to be forum members? Have a buddy with a Nitro that would be intrested in coming. Could help out someone that does not have a boat big enough for Melvern.
It looks like I have a Pinewood Derby on the 27th so the 4th will work best for me but I can skip it and go fishing if we end up having the Razor Clam Classic on the 27th.

Depending on wind, I might need to hitch up with a boater. Hi Salenity, got a free seat bud?
I don't for the tournament but we could probably get together and fish someplace before it if you want.
For sure. Ill pm ya.

Always can use more boaters. Just as long as he's willing to contribute food if he's going to eat and knows that it's just for fun, no money or prizes.
I'm in. I will bring fish cookies again. Looks like Melvern. I will be fishing with Curt.
Well Im looking to find a boater incase the wind is too much for my kayak. Anyone looking for a 2nd?

Strap on your Big Boy pants and come over to Pickwick for the RoadTrip.
This lake is on fire! 11.8 lb fish weighed in tournament two weeks ago and
lots of double digits being reported. Saturday under very challenging conditions,
35lb sack for 1st Place, 29 for 2nd!
Guaranteed to have a grand time!

I still have a free seat as of now if you want it... I suppose this year is as good as any to win the RAZOR CLAM CLASSICTM
Well I guess my vote is for Ft. Scott but i'm sure we'll just end up at Melvern again. It's hard to beat that combo of smallies and the easy drive.
Apr 4th would be better than the 27th for me.
Retro, Ill take that seat if the wind is too much. I APPRECIATE it. I'll even get the wife to whip up some cookies just for us. ;-)
Lets make it interesting. NO Ned Rig ALLOWED. Thoughts?
I don't get it, that's known to work? I'd rather be catching than fishing...
I wont use a ned rig, just half a senko glued onto a small jig head

I totally agree with this. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. We could do something like at least 2 of the 5 have to come from something other than a ned rig. Just a thought though.
I am just coming to have fun... fish what you want to fish with!!!!!
Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum and I plan on going wherever you gents decide. I have a pelican plastic boat, so i too am concerned about the wind.
Fine fine fine. Just a thought. Shot down like waterfowl the first day of the season. LOL

Stay tuned for further info as the date gets closer. If we have enough boaters we could pair you with a boater so you don't have to fish out of the 2 man.
On 3/6/2013 at 12:33 AM, Mr_Scrogg said:Lets make it interesting. NO Ned Rig ALLOWED. Thoughts?
The time we'll be there jerkbaits and spinnerbaits could both actually be very big players. I tried to fish a Ned rig last April and it was almost impossible because of the mass numbers of white bass and crappie in the shallows. Anyways, I found a bait this winter that isn't a senko style bait that I'm planning on fishing like a Ned rig that's going to mop the floor

I'll put you down for Ft.Scott. What I'll probably do is if the day of wind forecast is too much we'll use the second most voted lake as a back up,which looks like Ft.Scott is going to be in that spot.
It's looking the the 27th so far unless we get a big surge in new members who want a different day since there's only been 2 votes for a day other than the 27th. I couldn't make the 4th for sure, I'll be on the White River in Arkansas again
Blue is getting a tad c*cky eh? Hahaha. I'll be looking forward to what you got as a secret weapon
I never used a ned rig anyway. I know Chris finally became a believer last turny but I just cant force myself to do it lol.

I'm all for Ft Scott as a backup but I think the best thing to do for small / older boats is just to launch from the south side of Melvern (assuming the wind is out of the south like normal).

***TIP***
Don't give your favorite bait a name someone will want to ban it!
Lol , HS
Oh since Ive learned of it, thats all Ive fished. Haha
I made a deal with myself. Only if Im targeting Smallies or Spots, will I fish the Ned.
Largemouths, im looking to up my PB. So will be targeting big fish with big frogs, jigs and hard Swimbaits.
Melvern is the only lake I've ever used the Ned
Ive actually pulled a nice 2.5-3lb LM out of a local pond on Thanksgiving Day. Let alone the 7+ lb Drum at Winfield City Lake. Haha

I caught a largemouth over 6 on a Ned rig last year out of a pond and my buddies old PB was 5.5 on a Ned rig. Big largemouths will eat them too.
I'd vote for Melvern....the toad in my profile picture on here came from Melvern. The water will still be pretty cool so I'm sure the smallies will be active!
I've added a list of the teams that I have already and the list of guys who I know are boats/nonboaters. If I don't have anything listed after your name either I don't know which you are or you said you have a small boat and I'm waiting to see if we can get you in a boat.
Hi Salenity and Wachati if need be would you guys mind both fishing as boaters? I hate to break up the reigning champs but I'd prefer nobody have to fish from a yak or pond prowler if we can avoid it.
As far as launching on the south side, I have no problem with it, especially if the wind is supposed to be like it normally is on Melvern. My suggestion would be for us to follow normal tournament trailering rules. At the time when everyone is launching you can drive to whichever ramp you'd like to launch from and then must be back at the main ramp by weigh in. The state park ramp is just nice because many guys have the state park vehicle permit so not everyone has to pay to launch and then the shelters right there by the ramp for the cookout afterwards.
The only thing you'll be asked to contribute is some food or drinks if you're planning on staying and eating and some gas money for your boater if you're fishing as a nonboater, especially since it's already almost $4 a gallon.
Tournament rules/regs:
April 27th 2013
Start time-7am
End time-3pm

Put me down as a boater with a non boater.
Ill do this. Ill be a non boater
I can be a boater if need be, but would prefer to fish with my partner in crime. I plan on having the new boat by tourney time, I have already committed to buying it, he gave me two months to get down there and get it. The old boat shouldn't be hard to fix, just not getting fire to the plugs. I haven't decided if I will sell it or not. If I do sell it I have to give first shots to those who helped me find the boat originally and to HiSalenity who has bugged me to sell it to him since I bought it. Also I would like to add that there be a "Dink Award" that goes to the smallest dink caught, as I plan to definitely win this. Believe it or not that is a Smallie in my profile pic caught in the last Razor Clam Classic on the Ned rig.
Im getting tbe itch pretty good now. Im off work for 30 days so im gonna do some bank fishing a lot this month. Im excited about the get together i just hope someones got some room on there boat. Good luck to everyone.

Looking like April 27th is going to work for almost everyone so that's the date I have it set at as of right now.
We'll have to leave me as a maybe with the april 27th date. My brother's birthday is the 28th, so there's a high possibility we'll be celebrating his birthday that saturday. I'll try and let you guys know as soon as I know.

Well if those guys pass on your old boat give me a holler. I'm looking to transition boats this year and really like that setup alot.
How about another side pot for who pulls the 'widest clam' ?
wouldnt mind a big bass side pot(optional of course) 5 bucks winner takes all picture of length and maybe girth idk could sweeten the deal but thats up to blue or maybe pic on scale idk

We can discuss that at the ramp if anyone is interested.
Still looking for a couple more boaters if anyone is still on the fence. Looking like we're going to have a pretty good turnout and it's a fun time and a good chance to meet some new people and maybe even learn something about the lake.
Well, we made it to Melvern yesterday. It was a beautiful 80* bright and sunny day with a touch of wind (30+mph). The winds made it hard to fish anything under about 3 ounces! Needless to say we didn't get one single bite. We did talk to about half a dozen other boaters including one that was anchored near the ramp that said he'd talked to every boater that had used that ramp and none of them had caught anything or even had a bite...
We were going from one spot to another and got into 3' waves and got SOAKED!!!
We went to our backup plan we found a sheltered cove took off my shirt to dry it off and broke out the cooler of Beer and proceeded to get one hell of a sunburn!
All and all it was a great day!
Hey Retro, I win!
I didn't put it on the scales but I bet it was 1.5''
Btw water temps were between 39-42*
on the the first post does
busy-boater mean i am a boater or need a boater? Im trying to get my boss to go in which case ill probably boat with him but im trying to see how this thing shakes out too, its looking like a pretty good turn out so far!

Hey Blue, Headley from work is coming with his Nitro, he is willing to take a non-boater. If you wann pair him with someone who needs a boat.

Thought I'd toss this out to everyone. Would you guys be interested in chipping in maybe $5 a person to get a couple traveling trophies for this deal? Thought it might be fun to have a couple "Razor Clam Classic" trophies done that could be passed off to the winners each time we do this thing. Either that or we could do the same thing and I'll just get some gift cards or some goodies at BPS that the winners could split up. Or we could just keep it like it is, just for fun and bragging rights

I would be in for a couple traveling trophies. Or maybe something that you could display on the boat, not sure what though.
sure whatever you want im in
I don't care I'm good for whatever...
Would anyone be interested In getting t-shirts ? Maybe we could talk to Glenn and get some BR/razor shirts made up if enough of us wanted them
Could even get our screen names on them
I'm down for whatever. I will have my new boat Monday. I am going to hang on to the old one for the heavy timber lakes.

I think we'll be good now, I've got a couple buddies and friends from work that aren't on the site that have boats about talked into it so hopefully we'll have enough boaters.
Bue,
I will be going with my boss in his boat so you can update the list.

I guess we probably need to start the food list now that we're just a little over a month away. The last couple times we've done burgers, brauts, and hotdogs with whatever sides everyone wants to bring. If we can get a few people to bring some burgers, brauts, or dogs, a couple to bring buns, some sides, somes desserts, and some drinks we'll be good to go. You can PM me with whatever you want to bring and I'll make a list on the first post so everyone knows what they're responsible for. If you're planning on staying to eat please volunteer to bring something, even if it's just a bag of burger buns or a 2 liter of pop.
bet it snows turny day
I'm thinking with the wind and weather we may want to do the truckstop afterwards.

Who's going to take out the loan for all the Pepto Bismal we'll need if everyone eats there?
There's a Wendys too. Hahaha
The place is expensive and it's hit or miss but I've had some of the best prime rib I've ever had there and it's closer to the marina ramp and that ramp is closer to home for all of us.
I honestly like the cook out idea the best but let's face it, it may snow that day.
theres a subway also for all you calorie watchers
The average high for 27th of April at Melvern is 69 degrees, low is 47. I think we should be safe from the snow by them. If it's looking like it's going to snow by then I don't see there being much attendance anyways
could be 90 degrees too! we do live in kansas and missouri
Just saw the first post of this thread and that's a nice turnout. This thing just keeps getting bigger and bigger.
I'm down for the truckstop if it's cold. If anyone could smoke a pork shoulder ahead of time that would do the trick. I'd offer to make a vat of chili for everyone but those fixins would run a $80-100 pretty easy.
It will warm up... this weekend i'm hittin DGCO come hell or high water

I've got a buddy at work that smokes some great BBQ that I'm sure whould be willing to do it if that's the route we wanted to go? Then I could just get a pork shoulder or pork butt and just figure what it costs a person.
I've been to DGCO twice this year, only 1 fish from both trips but the water was 40.6 degrees last time I went.
I have a suggestion for the eating afterwards. A good friend of mine owns the Heidi Inn restaurant about 10 mins from the lake near Lebo.Iif we don't want to mess with who brings this or that we could go there. I could have them put a huge table together, it would probably take up the whole place lol.
Anywhere that has beer

I could handle smoking the meat for this, I'd bet it would be cheaper for us to make it ourselves anyway. I love smoking as well so it would be fun for me. I could throw a brisket or a slab or two of ribs in as well if some people would want it.
I would rather keep it like it is eat picnic style and I am in on smoked bbq it might be an option to eat out if the weather turns nasty but I think a lot a guys might not stay if we eat at a restraunt.
That works for me.
Next time we should have a fish fry.
I will make some Brunswick Stew with Cbass, and introduce you Kansas boys to some Georgia eating!!!
Not sure how long my partner and I will be able to stay. That night is my bachelor party so we can't be there too long.

Looking like we're going to hit it right on the head I think as far as timing goes guys. I have very few people who've replied with what they're bringing or if they're for sure going or not. I have the teams/people who've said they are/might attend listed on the first post with the pairings I have so far and the food listings below the teams listed. Take a look and let me know if you are or aren't planning on attending so I can update the roster and we can get things set.
Im signed up for burgers. Should I cook them? Or is someone bringing a grill??

There is a grill by the shelters and I'll bring one just in case we can't get a shelter.
With the way work has been lately it doesn't look like I will be able to afford to make the trip guys. Really wish I could though, maybe if I can get this new job I'm trying for soon enough

I'll bring hamburger buns. Are we still wanting to have some bbq? I am more than willing to take care of this, just as long as this is what everybody wants.
put me down for tater salad and forks
I will be bringing a BIG pot of Brunswick Stew with cbass.
It's starting! Info on the KC area thread.
If there's any lurking boaters out there we're still in need of at least 2 more boaters for the get together. It's been a really good time the other two times we've done it with good food afterwards and some pretty good fishing too.
I will check with Phil he may want to come as a boater.

That would be great if anyone knows someone with a boat that would be interested in fishing it and wouldn't mind teaming up with someone for an afternoon.
Come on people. There are 28 of us signed up to fish, but less than 10 bringing food. Could use another person bringing burgers or dogs, buns, chips, drinks, etc
Im bringing 10 burgers, big bag of chips, and cookies.
If you dont wanna bring, and just want to donate $$ to the food, my paypal is escogins@cox.net. Ill take the money and put it to what we dont have.

We've actually lost a couple of people due to unforeseen circumstances but still have 25 down right now. I've sent PM's to those that have said they're planning on attending and staying afterwards to eat that haven't told me what they are bringing to pick something to bring. Even a bag of chips or 12 pack of Coke is fine, just need a little something to chip in. There are a couple people that aren't planning on staying afterwards so they aren't bringing anything, which is fine.
Charcoal would be good too. All that food on one grill might take a bit.
I'm not planning on staying but I can still bring some food. Mr_Scrogg, what kind of burgers are you bringing? I can add 10 more.

That would be very generous of you but you don't feel the need to bring anything since you aren't staying. Certainly won't turn it down if you want to bring something though.
Thinking of the premaid ones out of the butcher section at the grocery store. 80/20 or 85/15. Any leaner than that and they will dry out too much.
And like Blue said. Thats very generous of you. Hopefully it will spark some if the goers to pony up a little
That is what I am hoping. If people are willing to spend $50 on gas for the drive, they can spend some on food.
im bringing a small bag of charcoal I have a gas grill and I don't need it
It didn't look like anyone has chips, ill bring a few bags of chips.
I was going to bring some brats but it looks like we have plenty of meat?
Sorry been busy with work so haven't checked the spring get together posts. I will bring baked beans and fish cookies. If someone is already bringing that then just tell me what I need to bring. I've also got lots of paper plates if needed.

Sounds good to me.
2pm sounds like a good endtime, that way I can be good and drunk by 5pm!! Cbass is driving home
sounds good 2 pm since I need to be somewhere.
Sounds good to me too. My official bachelor party starts at 7
One week to go until the 3rd Razor Clam Classic! Get your jerkbaits and spinnerbaits ready boys! I wouldn't even bother bringing any Ned rigs
Oh I got something better than a Ned, Blue. me and retro gonna put a hurtin' on that lake!!!!
hes just trying to psych us out so were not prepared
well hope some one figures something out lol maybe this weather next week will turn all lakes around including melvern
I went to Osage today hoping to catch them like blue Wednesday. While my fiancée and I didn't catch anything big (biggest was 16") we did manage to catch 32 bass. Most of them were about 12" with some larger and smaller mixed in.

Oh. And i fished with retro yesterday, drove 2hrs back to Wichita, then worked all night. Pmed blue all night about boats. Lol
Well....where do I begin?? Yesterday I took my new ranger out to make sure everything was in line for the tourney. Went to start my truck, it was dead, no biggie, jumped it and headed for lacygne. Put the boat in and it fired right up. Idled out through the river and when I gave it gas it would just fall on its face, obviously a new high pressure fuel pump did not fix it. I then got all sorts of loud beeping so immediately shut it down and trolled all the way back to the boat ramp. Bent the shaft of my trolling motor trying to get it back on the trailer. On my way home I blew a tire on the trailer. I really hope my luck changes, bc I am out of patience.

Thanks guys. I'm pretty sure it's fuel related, but am hoping its not the low pressure pump bc that's going to be another $500. You can power it up in neutral and it runs fine without any hesitation at high rpm, but as soon as you try to put it under any load in gear it cuts in and out. I will definitely check out those forums.

The alarm sounds a lot like what mine did at Table Rock when kanasbassfisher and I were there a couple years ago. As soon as I'd try to power up it would overheat and the alarm would go off. It turned out to be the thermostat was stuck because of some sand my motor had sucked up on the river. Replaced the thermostat (about $20) and cleaned out the little bit of sand I could still see and it was good as new.

We have one for sure non boater that still needs a boater. Just let me know for sure. We're going off the East ramp in the state park, the one on the north closest to the dam at 6am or safe light until 2pm.
I was thinking about hitting Melvern up Saturday afternoon/evening, let me know if there's any food items that still need to be brought.
Salenity and I fished Melvern today. Could have pretty much just brought a jerkbait rod and left the rest at home. Caught a bunch of fish but other than 1 on a Ned, 1 on a crank, 1 on a keitech, and 3 on a shakyhead all the rest were on jerks. Location wasn't really important, pick a rock bank with at least 6' of water and start casting and you'd run into one eventually. The dam was loaded with white bass, both caught smallmouth and largemouth and Curt got a spot too. Mainly fished the north side of the lake but I'm sure we could have done the same thing on the south side of the lake we did on the north. Only fished about 1/3 of the dam before the wind got bad and we left those fish biting and we couldn't fish much other than a jerkbait with the wind blowing like it was. Had several in the 16-17 inch range and super fat and pulling like crazy. White jerkbaits seemed to be the better color.

If you want to bring some paper towels or a pack or two of hotdogs and buns that would be great.
NICE!!!!!!
At times Melvern was a grind but at other times they were biting pretty good. I think me and Blue doubled up 4 times. The quality and quantity wasn't quite as good as I'd like to have seen but I'm hoping by the morning the big girls will be hungry!
Great, I'm terrible with a jerkbait. Were they suspending jerkbaits or floating?
Suspending, & you'll be a pro by the end of the day.

Im not sure if Matt(retro) does. But Im bringing my Hawg Trough. If he does, you can borrow mine.
I have one ill try to remember to bring it

I have a board and soft tape in my boat so if you can't get a board from someone you can borrow my tape measurer.
Fantastic. Sounds like there's a few folks who are bringing extras. Still can't track mine down, so it must have gone missing last season. Also, I'm stopping at QT in the morning. Anything need to be picked up? I can pick up some soda/chips/whatever extras you feel need be brought.
LETS GET IT ON LADIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RAZOR CLAM CLASSIC 2013
Maybe some tampons for Blue when I bring in biggest fish.
Is there gonna be a community ice chest to put meat in or should I bring mine?

Could probably use some chips and hamburger buns, that should be about all we need.
KSDawg and I went to melvern for about 3 hours this afternoon, despite the rain and wind..... We did pretty well. I caught one on a jerkbait in the first five minutes and Blake caught one shortly after that. It was pretty steady for a while, but slowed down as we got colder/wetter...we sort of lost interest after a while since we couldn't feel our hands. We decided to call it a day a little early because we were numb but I'm sure we would have continued to catch fish. Very nice fish were caught, Blake broke his PB smallie 3 times! We should do pretty well tomorrow guys!!!

easy now, I'm not the big fish guy, I haven't caught the biggest fish in any of the get togethers yet. Kanasbassfisher08 had big fish honors first time around and Salenity had it last time.

I'll put money on me bringing in the biggest drum
Then Ill put my burgers in your cooler Hi Salenity
I think I figured out how to post pictures.....
Sorry to inform you guys but the 'Widest Clam' side-bet turned out to be a no-go because it turns out transporting clams is a felony..
I know alot of you had hopes of winnin that..
Looking forward to it! I'll be there a little after 6 ready to tear some smallies up!
ooohhhhh ya let the smack talk begin I think me and chris are due plus chris hooked himself I think that counts as the biggest fish caught last time.
Smack talk? What's that? I know got skunked talk, bad day talk, broke a rod talk. Not familiar with "smack"
Lol. Im just happy to get out with a great bunch af guys. I fish alone quite a bit. So the comradery is nice.

I usually do too. I'd be there at 6, but I'm one of those terrible fisherman that's not a fan of waking up early on my days off. So noon will have to do...
Don't forget the $3 for parking on the way in.
Can't sleep.
Is it for all cars or just launching boats?
Mrs. Scrogg made a ton of cookies. Choco chip and Peanut Butter Choco chip. Also a dozen or so "Power Bars" for during the day fishing. Its oatmeal, honey, PB, choco chips, raisins, and macadamia nuts. Only 12 squares or so. So first come first serve!!!! Lol
All cars, those owner bars sound great!!
^^^power bars
My wife said they were horrible. That I shouldnt even bring them. She should just keep them at home. Hahaha
Ill take one, just to help get rid of them.
;-)
I just left work. Should be there by 6am.

I didn't get everyone's sheets but I think the top 3 were
First-Hi Salenity/Wachati 91.5 inches Big Bass 19.75
Second-Bluebasser86/Nicole-89.25 Big Bass-18.5
Third-kanasbassfisher08/Ricky 89 Big Bass-18
The winning length in the fall shindig was 84.5 inches, a full 7 inches less than the winning length this time. Just a little further proof of the quality of fish that were being caught today. Supposedly the smallmouth population is down at Melvern from last year. Maybe it is, I don't see it, but if that means more of the fish like we were catching today I don't have a problem with that.
We had several actual keeper sized smallmouth caught, we had 2 in our boat and KB08 and Ricky had 3 so we could have actually had a weigh in this time and had it been interesting. With the size of these smallmouth we may have to consider everyone weighing their fish on the boat next time because some of them we caught were 3.5 pounds but only 17 inches long. Obviously the main problem with that would be not every cheap digital scale is going to weigh the same while every ruler should measure the same, just something to consider. Weather was not nearly as nice as it was supposed to be but the fish bit from start to finish and the quality! wow we caught so many nice fish today. Jerkbaits were the deal for me but Nicole caught the big bass in our boat on a tiny little Luck E Strike squarebill. My big smallmouth was 18.25 on a shakyhead. My smallmouth/largemouth double.
Nicole's new PB smallmouth. 18.5 inches and 3.96 pounds.
We had an unbelievable day on the water, despite the weather. Blake (KSDawg) caught a smallie in the first five minutes and it really never stopped the rest of the day. Best bait for us was a chartreuse shad 78 pointer, but also caught a bunch on an RC STX. Caught a couple largemouth up in a cut on the north side on shakyheads. We caught a ton of fish in the 16-16.5 range. I broke my personal best with an 18.5, wish we would have had a scale to weigh it. I can't wait for the next get together!!
My team could only manage to scrounge up a measily 77 inches in comparison to everyone elses near 90 inch numbers.
We had trouble getting on the consistently larger smallies everyone was catching. Part of the reason for that was neither of us were good at throwing a jerkbait.
However, we ground it out till the finish and still ended up with a five fish limit (all largemouth by the way).
I think for my next trip I'll hit melvern again, or a different lake where jerkbaits work well and only bring two rods, and my jerkbait box. That'll probably force me to stick with it until I learn the ropes. "jerk jerk pause" just isn't good enough advice for me apparently.
At any rate, here was our big fish of the day caught on a shadrap.
I had a great time meeting some new folks, and seeing some old faces. Next time, wherever we hold the thing, I plan on being more of a competitor just so long as it's not at perry .
Woops, forgot the fish picture. Here it is.
Was nice to meet everyone, had a good time fishing despite the weather. We fished areas that in the past have produced well for us, but this was not the case yesterday, we only managed 4 fish, and they were small, we did have a couple come off and and 1 very nice follow from what looked to be at least a 5lb LM. We caught fish on a variety of baits, spinnerbait, jerkbait, jigs, crankbaits but could not find the numbers or size.
Thanks again to Blue for putting this together, look forward to the next event.
Hey guys yesterday was a BLAST! Lets start planning the next one. I'd like to do something different on the weigh in, I'm not sure what but I'd like to have some form of proof that we caught what we said we caught. Maybe all fish should be photographed on the board or a pic of them on a set of scales that we could check for accuracy after the tournament? I don't know just some rambling ideas...
So we found a stretch that was stacked with smallies. We ran up and down it twice and I asked Peter where he wanted to go next and he said hit it again. Reluctantly I thought don't leave fish to find fish so we went through it again and got SLAMMED by a 19.75" 4.4# PB smallie!
We figure we got at least 25 fish off that one spot!
All of our fish came from a jerk bait, a French pearl 110 caught most of mine including several that straightened the hooks on my $25 bait! Luckily I didn't loose but 1 fish all day and it wasn't from a bent hook it just let go? Peter however did loose one that we got a nice look at that would have gone 4-5 pounds!
NONE of our fish were caught on a ned rig or were caught from the dam.
I think thes was the fish of the day a 19.75
This is a pic of the width of the fish it was WIDE from head to tail!
By the way, a BIG thanks to Clayton for setting things up and to Big O for all the GREAT Rage baits and decals, they were very appreciated!
Glad everyone had fun again this time around. It's great to see the quality of fish that were being caught. Never would have guessed I'd be tossing 17 inchers back without having to measure them. Glad that spot paid off for Curt and Peter I thought about fishing it a few times but never made it there. How does everyone feel about the end of September for the next one? Last fall we did it late October and it was getting pretty nip and tuck if the weather was going to hold on and be nice by tourny day. The other potential problem we could have with late September is depending on the weather you may be looking turnover straight in the face. I like the idea of weighing the fish on the boats and doing a total weight, especially if we do Melvern again. Just my feelings with the way these smallmouth are built you can get a 16.5 inch fish pushing 3 pounds or like the 16.5 largemouth I had that was 3.57 pounds. Let me know what you guys think and we'll start looking at putting the next one together

I think one thing we could change, would be how long we fish. Since it is a get togther maybe we could just fish till noon. That way everyone would not have to leave so soon and we could make the cookout a lunch. I enjoyed the fishing, but I think having longer to hang around with everyone would be great. What do you guys think.
I think we have usually gone till 3 in the past but yeah having more time to hang out is good too. I think everyone was just a little beat up from the rain and the wind. At least the big ones were biting
I learned alot out there and had a good time. I couldn't get anything to eat a little 2.5 blue chrome jerkbait that i have good luck with. I didnt figure smallies to want all wanted the big ol stickbaits with hooks everywhere lol.
Good boatin with ya scrogg and catching enough to keep us thinking we were in it for most of the day. Glad I left my phone in the truck and didnt see all the monsters getting caught or we probably woulda got into the beer and burgers before noon!
Big props to Blue, Nicole, and Chris on bringing everyone together. They just keep getting better and better!
Yes a big thx to Clayton for putting together another one of these. The amount of people keeps getting bigger, and the fish keep getting bigger and better every time. Curt and I set a goal on the drive down there that we would be satisfied with win or lose. We ended up finding a really stacked area, that would produce in waves. We could go 15-20 mins without a bite and then double up two times in a row, and it was consistently that pattern. I still think about the one I lost, he hit at the very end of my last jerk, so I couldn't get any kind of set on him, he hit it like a pound of bricks. The moment he hit it I was already yelling at curt to get the net lol. I wish I wouldn't have seen it bc I could have told myself it was a big drum. I look forward to the next one, I definitely would love to try a new lake, and that one around Topeka sounds like a blast.
