Answer: The best way to make this scale useful for weighing fish is to grind the hook on the scale. I like to release my fish immediately after I catch them. I like to measure and weigh the larger ones. If you grind the mounting hook at an angle on the tip it will hold the fish by the mouth much easier. I never weigh fish by their gills because the gill covers were not designed to hold the weight and will tear on larger fish. I live in South Florida. I catch mostly freshwater species like largemouth bass and all of our exotics (Mayan cichlids,peacock bass,etc) this is a good scale for that purpose if you modify the S hook.
Answer: The least amount of handling of a fish you are releasing is best for the fish, of course. If the net you are using doesn't have a very long handle, or if using a lip gripper, weigh that first or use the tare function to zero out its weight, then weigh the fish with the net or attached to the lip gripper.

Answer: The hook is substantial. If anything will fail with a heavy load it would probably be the strap holding the hook onto the scale. I placed the hook in a vise and it held it's shape under decent pressure. I only lifted about 30 pounds with it. If I every get around to carrying a load of bricks I'll get back to you.

Answer: First, this is mass produced. I have not found a scale over the counter with state certification. If you want you will need to buy a totally different scale and have state agencies come and certify that scale at your own expense. I put on fishing tournaments and before I start I explain that my scales are not certified. In national contests that is different. DNR of each state have scales that you can see what they do for certification. Remember, this is an inexpensive scale, it can vary. But it has been very close on my contests.

Answer: Because a compound bow has a weight curve that decreases significantly after the cams rotate, this scale may not be a good choice. However, if the scale is set to use the hold feature, it could register the maximum pull up to the limit of the scale. Caution should be used if you decide to do this to avoid damage to the bow or injury to the archer should the string slip. I do not recommend it. Take the bow to an archery shop with a proper scale to measure bows.

Answer: Our fishing scales do not have the peak poundage, but have the ability to lock in poundage. When the sensor captures the weight of the product, it automatically locks the poundage; and if the customer presses the “memory” button, the value is stored and the customer is looking through the memory. When the value is displayed, if the value viewed at this time is the largest value, the value will flash three times to remind the customer.
Answer: I haven't done it, but I suppose you can? You would need to fasten the bow to a stationary object. This scale locks after 2 or 3 seconds, but you can look at the scale while you pulling the string back (because you would only need one hand since the bow would be fastened to something). I don't know what "version" of the product I got, but mine is excellent. I'm not saying that it doesn't match the picture, it matches exactly. I'm saying I have none of the problems that others have reported. Maybe mine is a more recent model, but it functions perfectly and although it's made in China, the instructions are easy to read and follow.
One thing to keep in mind is that it must be vertical when you turn it on, and when you want to unlock a locked weight.

After shaking all the water out I let it dry (for a long time) and reinserted some new batteries. Did it work? Yes. Am I impressed? Yes. A 5-star product for sure IMO. By the way, I still don't recommend dropping it in the water.

Techie : Seems quality, tends to activate itself in my backpack.
Scale itself seems quality, though I have yet to check it's calibration.
Two issues though:
1. The mechanism on the measuring tape feels like hot garbage. I don't know if I just got a bad one, but it feels like a tape measure that was poorly made and then used heavily in a very sandy environment. Every time I pull it out, it feels like there is maybe a 50/50 chance it will retract again. Fairly certain this will fail with even moderate use, but we'll see. This was just an additional features, so it's not a catastrophic failure.
2. The buttons, particularly the power button, are way to easy to activate accidentally. Recessing them just a tad would HUGELY improve the tendency to activate accidentally while in my fishing backpack.
Two issues though:

I don't know if I just got a bad one, but it feels like a tape measure that was poorly made and then used heavily in a very sandy environment. Every time I pull it out, it feels like there is maybe a 50/50 chance it will retract again. Fairly certain this will fail with even moderate use, but we'll see. This was just an additional features, so it's not a catastrophic failure.
2. The buttons, particularly the power button, are way to easy to activate accidentally. Recessing them just a tad would HUGELY improve the tendency to activate accidentally while in my fishing backpack.

Works amazing. Bought this to measure the belt tension on my x-carve. Simple enough to just turn on and go, and the quality is great for the price. Would recommend to anyone. The built it tape measure is a great plus too. Although the max is shorter than you’d need to measure most things, it is great for what you can use it for.
Side note: when measuring your belt tension on the X-carve with this thing, I hook this under the belt right at the halfway point with the gantry all the way to one side. Then I pull the belt up with this to exactly one inch. I like to keep my belts at around 3.5lbs (also make sure the machine is set to lbs).

B.T.S. : Compact scale that works
I bought a couple of these under varying brands and had to return them due to defective LCD screens. This one seems to be built better and hasn't given me any problems. It's small as you can see in the photo, does a great job weighing fish, will weigh packages I need to ship, and luggage so I don't get dinged with heavyweight fees on flights. I haven't had a need to use the tape measure but I'm glad it's added on there just in case.

I needed this for critical balance of a telescope system. it reads out in ounces, lbs or kg which is nice. I previously used a trigger pull gauge which had a minimum limit of 8 oz. This has a digital reading which is immediate. If you find that it locks on a weight, push the power button quickly and it resets. Also, an added feature is Tare, which allows you to zero out a container etc. and then weigh what you put in it. Overall, for the price, I am very satisfied and it it lasts for a year, it is well worth it. Some complained about the flimsy tape measure but I don't care about that and you cannot expect a stanley tape measure for the price. Lastly, the instructions were easy to follow.

Please read through this to the end!! Got this scale thought it'd be just what I needed on my boat. Got put it on the boat and it was a month before I went fishing, caught a nice fish and got the scale out of the cabinet and it wouldn't turn on. I thought maybe it came with cheap batteries so I changed them, still nothing!!!! Changed them again just to be sure and still nothing!!!! So after I'd never used it , it wouldn't turn on. I went back and checked to see if I could return , nope "return window closed"!!!! Left this review and they contacted me and said they definitely wanted to make it right!! They offered to send me a new scale and it works great!!!! Love the scale and the company!!!

This thing is a piece of junk. Tested it, it worked. Went to use it later that same day, stopped working. We got this to weigh my daughters feed for her 4h animal. When we tried, it read zero... it was broken. Will not weigh anything. We tried new batteries, did not help. We put our last name on it so others wouldnt mistake it as theirs, so we cant return the piece of junk. Pay a little more and get a good one, or get an analog one that wont fail like I had to. I wish I could give zero stars, just like it weighs, but one is the lowest I can go. I see other reviews that say the seller sent them a replacement free of charge. Well, they have not done so for me. Looks like they dont stand behind their product anymore. Look elsewhere people.

I was very happy with the product. I needed something small and fast with some weighting power. It arrived gasta me with batteries. I tried the scale when it arrived in July and then some other time. I gave it back the a 5 starts review but I am obliged to change that rating now. At the begening It seemed to work fine however the third use in November the scale was not measuring anything. It says it weights up to 110 pounds but I had around 40 pounds added to it and it didn’t measured it. I level it just In Case it was that and nothing. I changed the battery thinking/hoping it just needed a replacement and nothing still. I added just 5 pounds and it didn’t even measured that. I don’t use a scale very often and I am disappointed I didn’t noticed sooner. My return window period expired since august and now I still need a scale and I am not happy with this product.

I bought this scale to weigh my puppy as he grows. It was inexpensive so I hoped it would be accurate for that one thing. It is because I verified the puppy's weight on the vets office scale. Just hook on his body harness and in a moment you know weight without hurting him. I'm sure I will use it for other things as time goes on. Pleased with this purchase.

This was very handy gadget in the barn to help others figure out the correct amount of hay to feed the animals while I was away. I hung the scale, then hung a plastic bin on the scale to put the hay in to measure. The ONE thing I did not like was that the scale weighed the hay within seconds and then locked in the weight. So if the amount of hay was not enough, I could not add to what I already had in the bin and reweigh. I had to take out the hay, add more, then put it back in the bin to reweigh. It would have been handier if the weight would not lock in immediately. But it was still a helpful and useful tool and it didn't cost much.

For fishing I held the hook in a pair of pliers and ground the flat end to a point - easier to get it under the fishes chin to weight it. Also you can weigh your net, push the "tare" button which will zero the weight out and then put the fish in the net to weigh it and know the exact weight. I love this little scale. Note, I dropped in in the lake - oops - and retrieved it quickly - and shook any water I could out of it. It quit working (duh) but, after I let it dry in the sun for a couple hours, it, once again, works like a charm. Pretty sturdily built for a little $13 scale.

The scale works nice. I just did some calibration checks and the measurements look quite good. The lock function is quite usefull (mainly because I bought the scale to check the poundage of my bow) and it locks the measurement after 2s (but the scale needs to be steady). And, I thought the material of the scale strong. Just for completeness I attached 2 graphs showing its performance... in overall, it seems to have about 4% of discrepancy with the real weight.

Good scale if you don't accidentally drop it in water. Used it in a canoe to weigh fish. Fell in the bottom of the canoe where water was building up. Got submerged. Worked for a little bit after, but then completely died. Will be looking for something a little more water resistant at least.
Customer support for Dr Meter was outstanding though. Sent me a replacement and the new unit is great. Accurate and easy to read. I still stand by my advice to not let it get submerged though, as this device is not meant to be water resistant.

frequent customer : Uncomfortable to hold, useless for large fish
It's ok for small things, not very accurate but you get the ballpark idea. For large fish or objects it's useless. Hook is flat and small, doesn't hold up very well. Trying to lift anything over 20 lbs is incredibly uncomfortable since the meter is very small and there is no additional grip space without blocking screen. The metal handle is a joke, only a child could fit their hand through that tiny slit.

This thing is awesome. I needed an accurate way to measure all the plates in my gym since we don't have calibrated plates and I'm a power-lifting / weightlifting enthusiast. I'll post a picture of how I rigged it up. I found that my steel plates were fairly off. My 315 was really 321. Guess I should be happy it's higher. I'm happy to now have accurate weights.

I bought this to monitor the weight loss efforts of my girlfriend. Her weight exceeded the readout capability of the scale. Rather than return it, I started using it as a backup to my triple beam scales. It weighs grams and kilos just fine and my foreign business associates learned to trust it. It also very easy to conceal in case the wrong people show up unannounced. It weighs fish too.

I purchased this scale to weigh a litter of puppies each day. This scale works amazingly well! It tabulates weight in lbs. oz. and kg which help me figure out even the smallest weight gains each day. I just put the puppies in a breathable canvas bag and hang off the scale. It is very easy and accurate. The batteries that came with it died only after two days so be advised of that. You will need to replace them after very little use.

I wouldn't waste your money. I thought it was built nice was pretty stout. Used it one night and it weighed accurate. Went to use it again and it must have gotten wet. I had it in the cubby on my boat.. dosnt work anymore. Not sure why you would want a scale that isnt at least water resistant. One good thing it was to hold the paper in the garbage when I threw it away.

I didn't expect much for the price but was pleasantly surprised. Good build quality. Intuitive design. Nicely packaged. We have some automated swing gates and the clutches are supposed to be set to slip with 40 lbs of resistance. Yeah, good luck getting that without something like this. This device makes it easy. I suppose the pros have something even better (our guys want $125 an hour from the moment the truck leaves the shop until it returns). For what I saved doing it myself, I could buy 40 of these things and I don't have to hang out for a few days to see if they'll respond. Accuracy is ok for what I do.

It's a solidly built and compact digital scale and does the job. I use it along with as you can quickly hook it right on when weighing to get a precise reading.
It fell in the creek one day and I thought it was a goner. I managed to get it out of the water and immediately removed the batteries. After shaking all the water out I let it dry (for a long time) and reinserted some new batteries. Did it work? Yes. Am I impressed? Yes. A 5-star product for sure IMO. By the way, I still don't recommend dropping it in the water.

Worked good at first. Nice size, Small and compact. Accurate reading it seems. The hook is not large enough to really hook a fish properly I would recommend coming with a gill hook or larger weighing hook to ensure the fishes safety and "losing the fish" while weighing. Also, for a fish scale, its not even close to water resistant. I got some water on it and it started glitching out on me. Does not work properly and am afraid it will completely crap the bed soon! the measuring tape is a bit tricky to open without a tool or something. If it was water proof/resistant I would be much more impressed.
Update....I am super impressed by the customer service that Thousandshores and Hisgadget provided when they reviewed my situation. I have since recieved a replacement scale which works great. I plan to keep this still away from any water though in the future. I have added 2 stars to rating for the quick response and customer care i recieved. Thanks again for the replacment.

Amazon Customer : Not a good choice for compound bows
This scale works exactly as advertised and deserves its 5 star rating. However, through no fault of the manufacturer, I do not recommend it for determining draw weight of modern compound bows. If you read closely (I didn't), the scale has a HOLD function...meaning once the weight reading stabilizes the scale freezes the display. Perfect for fish, bags, traditional bows...anything with a constant weight. However, shooters of compound bows know that peak draw weight is somewhere in the middle of the draw, not the end. The weight doesn't stabilize and the scale doesn't freeze until the draw is past let-off and complete at the anchor point. For example, our nominal 40# compound peaks at about 42# in mid-draw, then the cam rolls over and with let-off the hold weight is about 15#. So the scale locks at 15 pounds, not 42. I had to get my son to watch the display as I drew in order to determine the real peak weight.

I am stunned by how accurate this weighs, and how well built this is. I use this to weigh the gear that will go into our backpacks so we divide the gear appropriately for the adults and the children. No more guesswork about weight. It is essential as we do not want to overload the kids with weight. Kids should only carry 10-15 percent of their bodyweight to prevent injury. Using this scale helps us to trim down the list of stuff we bring, and to chose wisely about the types of items the kids (and adults) want to bring. The scale is sturdy - my pack usually weighs around 40-45 pounds, and it hangs on the scale like nothing. The screen is easy to read and bright. The tare function works well. Simple tool for accurate load out.

Update. Amazon sent me another one the next day. I was very happy. Put the batteries in the unit and it started smoking right away. We pulled the batteries out immediately. Put them back in and as you would expect... it didn’t work. Changed to a refund. Sorry guys.
