Answer: Get yourself a Worksharp knife sharpener, either the orig one for $60, or the updated Ken Onion edition ($120), both are FANTASTIC. I’m TERRIBLE at sharpening anything, but this thing (I got the Ken Onion edition) has made it easy, quick and best of all, a “good knife sharpener” out of me! I don’t sell them, have no affiliation... I just like a good product when I get one, which is rare these days. Good luck.
Answer: I recommend going to your local harbor freight or ordering online and getting a 1x30 inch belt sander and getting some 600 grit bolts and a leather polishing belt for the sander too and you will have razor sharp knives all the time. Dont waste money on a work sharp. You can get the harbor freight set up and the belts for about the same price if not cheaper

Answer: For those too young to remember great grandpa shaving with a straight razor, let me give you a quick education. RAZOR sharp knife means it will not hold an edge. The sharper the edge, the quicker it will dull. That's why great grandpa had a razor strop that he honed his beard cutting steel with every time he used it. A fine razor edge on a fillet knife is important, as is the knowledge that you must hone (not sharpen) the edge regularly to maintain it.

Technique and angle are critical no matter what your chosen poison for sharpening, practice, practice, practice.

Answer: The knife appears to be quality made. It is described as "German Stainless Steel" so I would say with reasonable care it should hold up. No knife or any metal object for that matter will resist rust in salt water conditions without proper care.
Answer: It will rust like most steel in saltwater. This will be best avoided by rinsing off with fresh water and hit it with a little WD40 after every trip.

Answer: As with just about any knife you get, you’ll have to sharpen it after processing a few fish, especially if you are cutting through scales and/or bones. But you only need a few swipes across a sharpener, and it’s good to go! I found that it remained sharp through processing about 7-8 Alaskan Salmon (cutting scales and bones), before I needed to tune up the edge with a sharpener. Hope this helps!

Answer: The knife comes with a hard plastic sheath that has openings down the flat length from hilt to almost the tip. There is a tang at the hilt to keep the knife secured. Unfortunately there is no belt type loop incorporated into it. Haven’t had a chance to filet with it yet but it has an interesting rubber like material covering the handle which gives it a nice grip feel in hand. Not sure if the blade is stainless ( may say in the description) as it has a mat black coating. Hope this helps.

RH : First impressions - Substandard functionality
5 stars for looks, but reduced to 2 because it doesn't cut well (I mean, it IS a knife...). What I like: Looks!: The design of this knife is really nice; big comfortable handle and great color scheme. Features: Straight blade with serrations on top plus gut hook - great combination (I couldn't find elsewhere) What I don't like: Sharpness, or should I say dullness? The straight blade at first seems sharp but if you try the paper cutting test, it fails big time. In fact, a fish knife I picked up at Walmart for $2.89 was sharper! After a half hour with my sharpener, it now cuts paper quite well. The serrated part, while looking cool, doesn't cut very well, just tears what you're trying to cut - bad design.

I immediately returned this knife. It's not sharp. Not sharp enough to shave with. Not sharp enough to cut my finger when run it across the blade. When you test the blade with your thumb like you would any knife, it's got the feel of a dull steak knife at a cheap restaurant. When steel is good you can feel it. This is also true when it's junk and you can feel it immediately. Just to be sure I tried to cut paper, see the video. An absolute joke. All the good reviews of this knife have to be paid or faked. Read the 1 star reviews. They are the real ones.

I use this to cut meat for jerky fish rtc and it was great the first few uses them it seemed the blade was not sharp it was going through the meat easily at first like butter this is only after a few uses. And trying to cut a fish was quite hard barley made it through the fish with a lot of effort. Do you have to continue to sharpen these blades or what.

These KastKing Knives are amazing. The blade is sleek, very sharp and the handle textures when gripped, feels comfortable and sure. These knives will not come out of your hands no matter what. The German 4116 Steel is also known as a Marine Steel.. They are a steel used in many nautical knives. They also make medical devices from 4116 steel for hygienic applications, due to the high percentage of Chromium added to assure a higher corrocion resistance steel.. Chromium is what makes a steel stainless.. A low quality stainless steel has to have a least 5% Chromium, most stainless steel made will add no less than 10% Chromium to their steel. The 4116 German Steel (also know as the 4116 KRUPP) has 14.50 % of Chromium, which makes it a great knife for saltwater use. Even though there are steel with much higher Chromium added, too much Chromium with weaken the steel to edge retention and flex. The 4116 steel has a fine balance of Carbon, Chromium, Vanadium and Molybdenum which makes this steel so versatile and withstands hard use. It is not an expensive steel to create, but I haven't seen a Chefs knife made out of 4116 steel go less than $100. KastKing has created a masterpiece with these knives.. They are gorgeous and very AFFORDABLE.. If you love knives, (like I do) you will appreciate and enjoy these to your collection..

When the description states "Razor Sharp", I expect the knife to shave hair on my arm out of the box. Not even close! Maybe it will be razor sharp after I but an edge on it, but that's not what I paid for. I'll be returning this knife and find something better.

I bought this as a birthday gift for my fisherman hunting boyfriend who’s always complaining that his knife for fishing isn’t long enough for bigger fish. Being the amazing attentive girlfriend I am, I found the biggest one I could and bought it. He loves it. Since i bought it after fishing season was pretty much over we haven’t used it on any fish but it’s been used on steaks, chicken, ducks and it’s done a wonderful job. It’s sharp as heck, easy to hold, even for my little hands, and will definitely be big enough for catfish next spring.

To be honest I don't know a whole lot about what goes into making a good knife but I can tell you that this is far more then a good knife. It's solid, has good weight to it and and the handle is super comfortable. Most importantly though it is stupid sharp. I have purchased other products from these guys and all of them have passed my expectations. They definitely make high quality stuff and will for sure be purchasing the other sizes to the set.

I was determined to learn how to fillet fish that we catch and wanted to get a "starter" knife. I also wanted something that wouldn't seem awkward to hold since I'm left handed. This one was the least expensive on my list and was almost ready to pull the trigger on a much more expensive knife. The KastKing won out and I'm glad I bought it! Super sharp thin blade that easily cut away the fish skin (and other parts). Easy to hold as a left-handed person. I used it a couple times on our trip and will get a sharpening stone for the next trip. I would buy this knife again!

Features: Straight blade with serrations on top plus gut hook - great combination (I couldn't find elsewhere) What I don't like: Sharpness, or should I say dullness? The straight blade at first seems sharp but if you try the paper cutting test, it fails big time. In fact, a fish knife I picked up at Walmart for $2.89 was sharper! After a half hour with my sharpener, it now cuts paper quite well. The serrated part, while looking cool, doesn't cut very well, just tears what you're trying to cut - bad design.

Must have for any serious outdoorsman. Great price and quality! This knife is not only great looking, but it feels incredible in my hand. Nice cover is a great bonus. The handle has a great wrapping on it that makes it feel like it won't slip when wet. This bad boy is RAZOR sharp out of the box. Excellent flex to the blade. Makes my old fillet knife feel like a piece of junk. I will definitely be buying more of these knives in different sizes. I am totally sold on KastKings products. Super fast shipping too.

This knife cuts even large scaly fish with ease and also stays sharp through filleting most of the fish in the cooler. Amazing how it keeps it edge and is still a very flexible knife. I will purchase more!

Amazing feel to this handle even when your hands are covered in your catch. The blade has plenty of flex to get a nice smooth fillet and stays sharp. I even used it this past winter while ice fishing and it held up to the cold Minnesota winters. Excellent product KastKing!

Never buy the walmart brand filet knives and u dont have to buy a Bubba...KK is the truth...I have been fishing for 35yrs and I just started cleaning my own fish like 2 weeks ago, this knife made me look like a pro.
Update 9/19/2021: On 2nd thought I still give this knife 5 stars but I found myself really questioning this knife when my friend let me use his Bubba...yea I returned the KK and ordered a Bubba. I had to do sharpening already on the KK only after 3 fish, I also didnt like the cutting action I had to do with the KK ....using the Bubba all I had to do was slide the knife thru the fillet....SOLD.

While I haven't used it yet it does feel good in the hand. Good quality and arrived semi-sharp. While its not dull upon arrival, you will need to sharpen it more to get easy cuts. Expensive but very giftable as well. I am happy with the purchase. 4 1/2 Stars!

Gave this to my husband as an early anniversary gift! He loved it! He got to try it out today on fish he’d caught. And he was so impressed with how easy it cut. Had no struggle WHATSOEVER with filleting the fish. It was VERY sharp straight out of the box. As he was filleting, he barely touched his thumb, and the knife apparently broke skin. But that just made him happy to know that it’s that good of a blade. I was on the fence about it because of the reviews, but now I’m sold. He wants more! Don’t hesitate to buy! I use this to cut meat for jerky fish rtc and it was great the first few uses them it seemed the blade was not sharp it was going through the meat easily at first like butter this is only after a few uses. And trying to cut a fish was quite hard barley made it through the fish with a lot of effort. Do you have to continue to sharpen these blades or what.

The knives out of the box were amazing. I own the 9, 7 and 6 inch. Each have great performance and great resharpening performance but, these handles need to go back to the lab. All of my handles became discolored, kinda moldy and breakage of whatever kind of latex ish material they used to cover them The don't hold up well to a lot of use and lots of washing in my experience. I would love an explanation as to why this is happening with these handles.

This is the worst knife that I have ever purchased. Right out of the box it would not slice printer paper without tearing the paper. It would take a lot of work to put a sharp edge on this knife. Do yourself a favor and purchase a name brand name knife and stay away from this junk.

I immediately returned this knife. It's not sharp. Not sharp enough to shave with. Not sharp enough to cut my finger when run it across the blade. When you test the blade with your thumb like you would any knife, it's got the feel of a dull steak knife at a cheap restaurant. I'm just glad I didn't wait until I was actually preparing a fish I caught. Lesson learned kids. Read the bad reviews too, not just the good ones.

I bought this to seamlessly remove the skin from entire fish fillets from the grocery store and it works beautifully. It is razor sharp and the sheath is great for protecting the blade. It also seems like it would go through my electric knife sharpener well when the time comes.

First things first, this knife has a great sheath that protects the blade from damage (and your stuff from the blade). I love how easy it is to get the knife out, yet how tightly it holds on to the knife when sheathed. Also, it'll never get damaged by water, which is a very nice touch.
Next, the knife is sharp. No two ways about it. I've yet to find out just how long it'll hold an edge or how easy it is to resharpen, that'll come with time.
Finally, it's got a great flex to it. Makes it really easy to slide along a filet.
All together, it's an awesome knife, and you won't be dissapointed.

So, like most folks during Covid, my Son-in-Law took up fishing. Didn’t have a fish knife, was using a big pocket knife. The fish filets...looked like it. Give him this one: hard to lose, due to bright orange; really great handle, says it really helps him guide the blade; and the fish filets look like an expert cleaned the fish. Winner-Winner, Chicken Dinner!
Just in time : Very comfortable razor sharp fillet knife for the price
First the good- 1 Razor sharp right out of the box 2 Good blade flex 3 Nice packaging and sheath 4 Comfortable in the hand 5 Phenomenal price
The Downsides- 1 While the handle is comfortable and ergonomic it is made of a fabric material that seems like it's not going to do well after getting wet and might absorb and hold some fish slime and smell. Not good silicone like most other brands. But only time will tell.
Overall I'm very impressed but still very concerned about the handle material and wondering why they chose to go that route. I've owned another one of their fillet knives and it had a great silicone or rubber type of handle that was the same price so this is a brain scratcher to me. Probably not good for commercial fishing. Still a nice knife and worth the money.

The grips on these knives are amazing. It feels a lot like the Winn grips they put on some fishing rods. Super soft and non-slip. The blade is very sharp, and flexible on this 9" finesse version. I didn't realize how big a 9" fillet knife is before I ordered. It is much larger than the typical fillet knives I have. Great buy!
