Questions about Oklahoma Joe's Longhorn Reverse Flow Smoker
Q:
what thickness and composition of the steel?
Answer: I believe it is made of 3/16 inch steel. I would like one with thicker metal but not ready to spend $1000 or have a 600 pound smoker. I smoked on mine three or four times now, both brisket and boston butt and it does an awesome job.
Answer: This is extreamly heavy with a 268 pound ship weight. I've seen some BBQ's so thin you touch it wrong and it will dent but not this. It's also balanced so it's easy to move on it's wheels which is nice. I don't know how to answer about the composition which is what kind of steel, the box does not say. So we like this BBQ but it takes practice to get it right but in the end you will be a real pit master. Everything we've cooked has been good some fantastic but through time it will get better. Hope this helps.
Answer: The main cooking chamber lid measured between 3/16" and 1/4". Almost a 1/4" thick.
Answer: MAde of cold roll steel 1/8" heavier then most in this price range
Q:
Is the firebox big enough to cook with wood only? No charcoal?
Answer: Absolutely. I start off with one chimney of charcoal as a bed and then add wood logs about 2 to 4 inch diameter. After that, I only cook with wood.
Answer: Yes but the wood pieces would have to be no longer than 10 inches. It's a fairly small space but is designed with a grill so you cook hamburgers or a steak or chicken breasts or vegetables all would be fine but brisket, ribs or pork butt not going to happen. Nice BBQ heavy and with care will last forever. I hope this helps.
Answer: Yes
Answer: I have run it with just splits and have run it with charcoal and chunks of wood. Good results both times
Answer: I always use a little charcoal to get the first logs going. But yeah, after that I just have another log or two warming up on top, and throw it in on the coals of the previous logs.
Answer: Cut split wood
Answer: Absolutely. We use mostly hickory chunks and small split logs all the time.
Answer: Yes it is.
Q:
i just purchased the OK Joe's longhorn reverse flow smoker Which port should the smoke stack go on since this is reverse flow?
Answer: Part of the beauty of this unit is that you have a choice in the matter. If you choose reverse flow, keep the baffles in place and the smoke and heat will flow from left to right over the top of the meat. In that case, the smokestack should be on the right. You can also put the stack on the left and remove the baffles, if you wish. That's the more traditional method. Play with it. Experiment. Find the method that you prefer. BBQ is fun and delicious, no matter how you choose to cook.
Answer: Congrats on your new smoker! We recommend attaching the smoke stack to the port closest to the offset firebox.
Answer: The stack should go on the right
Answer: The port on the bacl right side
Answer: The one nearest the fire box.
Q:
How was this delivered? Truck line?did you have to be home?
Answer: You do have to be home but you can schedule delivery.
Q:
what is the length and width of the main cooking area on top of the grid?
Answer: Not sure of the width and length. But you could get at least three good size briskets on there. Thanks to the plates kept the temp at around 250 from one side to the other I got the 1060 size
Answer: 39"x19" in the main chamber
Q:
Does this product come assembled
Answer: No
Q:
If I fill the main chamber with charcoal, can I grill in the main chamber or do i have to buy a charcoal tray?
Answer: You can definitely grill in the main smoker chamber. Charcoal can be placed in the bottom of the smoker chamber.
Answer: You can grill in the main chamber - we did the same thing for a large BBQ for a benefit that required hamburger/hotdogs supplied throughout the day. Worked perfect but the grill got very hot - We removed the lid - which helped tremendously.
Answer: The unit comes with separate grates that fit in the bottom and support charcoal solely for the purpose of grilling. No charcoal gray is necessary.
Answer: Yes.
Q:
how can i get this item shipped to philippines
Q:
How thick is the steel used to build oklahoma joe's longhorn reverse grill
Answer: They used to say 2.5mm, and on my 5-6 year old unit that seems about right. It is definitely more robust than my old cheap Char-Griller offset smoker. It is a solid unit, but did need some tweaks to make it perfect (second thermometer, lavalock gasket and latches for door, rtv sealant for all seams during assembly). I’ve read on some forums recently that quality has suffered in the years since Char-broil acquired Oklahoma Joes, so maybe take a drive to a local Home Depot or Lowes if you can and check one out in person.
Answer: This is 2.5 mm thick. Give us a call at 1-800-318-7744 and we will be happy to provide more information on this smoker.
Q:
Is this large enough to smoke a turkey?
Answer: This grill is large enough to smoke 3- 20lb turkeys.
Answer: I tried last thanksgiving. The turkey I used was too big from back to breast in that the breast touched the top of the inside of smoker. It is about 9 1/2 inches from grate to smoker. If you can find a bird that’s shorter than that you’ll be ok.
Answer: Yes I cooked 3 15 pound turkey easily
Answer: Yes, you could probably smoke three. Plenty of room.
Q:
Why did this item show up in a search for digital drum kits? Like 50 digital drum sets and this one smoker.
Answer: It's a drum barrel design.. so I'm assuming it matched against "drum"
Q:
Is nsd reliable in terms of accurate delivery time?
Q:

Answer: The fuel basket measures approximately 13.6 x 13.7 x 9.1
Answer: The basket for this Oklahoma Joe's Longhorn Reverse Flow Smoker measures 9.05"H x 13.78"L x 13.78"W.
Answer: 13 1/2” sq & 8” deep

Q:
What is the difference in a flow smoker, an offset smoker ?
Answer: In an offset smoker the smoke flows under the meat initially, then back over the meat and out the stack at the end where the firebox is. This makes the heat and smoke more consistent.
Q:

Q:
Why is the reverse model 12 pounds lighter then the regular one. The dimensions are the same and the extra baffles should make it heavier, not lighter
Answer: I have no idea. I would think it would be the same.
Q:
Can the longhorn fit firewood cut 16" long? I really don't want to have to cut my lumber again.
Answer: No. The fuel basket in firebox measure 13.7x13.7
Answer: Yes, firebox width is about 18" with side door for inserting wood about 8 1/2" x 7 1/2" .
Answer: In my opinion, that would probably be too long. Maybe 8" splits us more appropriate

is there a cover available for this smoker?
Answer: I am using the Charbroil cover. The xl size they sell on Amazon. I put it on backwards. It covers the.grill.
Answer: It is currently unavailable from Amazon with no change in sight. You could use the non reverse flow cover since the chimney is moveable.
Answer: Yes, it is listed as the reverse flow cover. I thought it was a little high in price compared to the regular cover.
Q:

Answer: I don't know but It has a good heavy feel. It's not a cheap thin metal like you would find on most home grills.

Answer: I've gotten 7 racks of baby back or small bone st.louis cut ribs in the grill
Q:
Can I fit 5 ten pound boston butts on this grill??
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Yes, they should fit. Might be a little cramped depending on the shape of your butts, though.
Answer: Yes i believe they would fit and still have space for air and heat flow. I would make sure though that i rotate them unless u r using the reverse air flow set up which is available for this smoker. I might still rotate them anyway just so the heat is hitting them evenly. At least once in the smoking process.
Answer: This beast can do it. Happy smoking.
Q:
Is this the original smoker by oklahoma joes or the Char-broil version?
Answer: I believe it to be the original version. It is made from heavy gauge steel unlike the versions you see in stores. I was impressed with the quality of the smoker when it arrived and I put it together.
Answer: The Char Broil version.
Answer: has an Oklahoma Joes badge on it.
Answer: Char-broil, but upgraded some from a couple years ago
Q:
So why is it $670 here when the Oklahoma Joe website has it listed at $499? Is there extras included?
Answer: Well, since I ordered the Longhorn and they sent me a tabletop Bronco--and then told me the Longhorn was out of stock--it's a crap shoot whether you'll get the smoker pictured here. But to answer your question: No extras. Oklahoma Joe's was bought out by a larger competitor, "Char-broil," I believe. So Oklahoma Joe branded models were likely discontinued and therefore resellers take advantage of the fact that they are hard to find.
Answer: Somebody is being greedy and charging to much. Check Sams they sell them even cheaper
Q:
Isn't this the unit that sells for $299 at Loews??
Answer: No it’s not. this is a reverse flow smoker the ones at Lowe’s are the traditional offset smoker. I mean if you find one with the smoke stack by the fire box then it should be a reverse flow and that’s what your looking for.
Answer: No. The one at Lowe’s is smaller and does not have a chimney that you can move. I believe it is only offset smoking and does not allow for reverse flow. Biggest thing for me was the size of the cooking area is significantly bigger on the Longhorn.
Answer: no
Q:
How thick is the steel in the firebox?
Answer: Stephen is correct, it's roughly 5/32 of an inch.
Answer: A little under 3/16 of an inch
Q:
What is serial number oklahoma joes
Answer: The serial number is on the OK Joe badge on the lid. Hope it helps.
Q:
some have complained about the paint peeling on the ok longhorn reverse flow smoker firebox. should i go ahead and paint the box b 4 i use it?
Answer: Seasoning the smoker will help to keep this from happening. If an issue ever occurs please give us a call at 1-800-241-7548 and we will be able to best assist.
Answer: No. The peeling paint is due to building to large of a fire and flames hitting the metal. Simply keep a low fire and it will be fine. If it does happen wire brush the loose Paint and or sand it. Then use high heat paint to reparir the area this smoker requires some upkeep but is an excellent smoker
Answer: I don’t think that’ll prevent the paint from peeling. Sadly, the paint used is inferior. Best wait for it to peel off then repaint it with a good high heat paint.
Answer: I would let the paint peel off and then repaint with a flat black HIGH HEAT spray paint made for woodburning stoves and grills. Hope this helps.
Q:
Which cover goes with this model
Answer: Mine didn't come with cover
Answer: I ended up buying the original style Oklahoma Joe cover and it worked perfect. The left side where the stack would normally be is just laying loose. But the cover still covered everything just fine.
Q:
For those who used rtv and gaskets: how many ounces of rtv will i need and how many feet of gasket?
Answer: If just sealing fire box halfs & to Grill 1 tube in plenty 1 roll felt will do the whole grill But recommend doing the fire box with RTV I used felt for the fire box lid and it didn't last long then you'll need a 2nd tube Watch a few You Tube vids before u start
Answer: I have no idea. Did not use.
Q:
Does the Longhorn reverse flow model come with a drip bucket for capturing the grease ?
Answer: No. The trays or baffles that are under the grated are designed to funnel the heat and smoke. I put foil under what I’m cooking to catch the drippings
Answer: No it didnt.
Q:
Hello, what is the thickness of the iron you use in this product? both in the firebox and in the cooking box?
Answer: This is 2.5 mm thick.
Q:
What is serial number for the oklahoma joes highland
Answer: Don't know. I have a longhorn
Q:
How come Lowe’s sells this exact smoker for only $300? What makes this one over 100% mark up?
Answer: I did not see this smoker at Lowe’s or any other store. I saw “The Highlander” but not this one, “The Longhorn.”
Q:
Several reviews mention the the paint peeling of the firebox after the first cooks. What is the fix for this?
Answer: I’m dealing with that right now. 80% of paint from bottom of fire box has peeled off after first cook. Charbroil rep tried to site wrong seasoning when I first got it. That’s not the case I seasoned it correctly. The cap where the fire box connects to smoker has warped and fire box is sagging. I have opened a warrant claim as I have had this smoker for less than 30 days and 2 smokes on it.
Answer: Sand it down so the rust is gone and just keep touching it up with a 2000°f Hi temp paint. After a few cooks you'll have most of it covered in the new paint. Otherwise of you have the time I'd just sand the paint off that comes on it and redo the whole firebox in the 2000
Answer: Just pick up some BBQ paint at any big box store. You can also try some high heat engine or header paint. BTW, the paint peeling doesn't impact performance of the smoker whatsoever. ????
Answer: My paint has not come off but if it does they sell a high temperature black paint and I do a ton of cooking with mine
Answer: All fire boxes will peel if smoking when damp outside. Mine did but knew this as I have owned many smokers. I let it peel then sanded and painted with a good high temp paint. Smoker is great otherwise no complaints. Would recommend buying a high temp felt like seal for doors and chimneys like I did. Really seals up nice this way and gives you much more control over temp.
Answer: No fix for it. Get a can of Bbq paint. Spray where needed.

Product reviews of Oklahoma Joe's Longhorn Reverse Flow Smoker
Emily : great smoker
Great smoker! Temperature is usually easily controlled and pretty sturdy. ONLY complaints: during shipment the Oklahoma joe's nameplate was broken off, now heat escapes and there is a slight gap between the lid and body.
frank : Easy build heavy box need help to move around
Great smoker for the money
Juanita J. Cain : Five Stars
We are very pleased with this piece of equipment
Scott G. : Use smoker all the time
I liked the 2chamber smoker. The temperature is easy to control with the air flow. I am having great luck smoking fish, pork and beef I am having a harder time.
Jammer : Disappointed dog is disappointed
Sealed everything...even the screwholes for the handle and it still leaks like a sieve from the lid. And there was a defect in the hot box. I shut everything and the fire was still raging. Got so hot the paint peeled. That picture is after my first BBQ!
Called customer service and they referred my to the manufacturer's 888 #. The manufacturer sent me a new hotbox which is why I'm giving this a 3 and not a 1. Still leaks smoke like a sieve, but it'll regulate temperature during smoking. Just don't expect any leftover coal after shutting it down.
Gordon Glass : Excellent grill
Smoked ribs on this smoker and couldn't believe how easy it was to maintain temperature across the whole grill.

Bandi : Quality controls issues
The pit was a bit of a challenge to assemble and we have owned and built numerous pits. First time we used the pit the side by the fire box bulged out-still does. Not sure if this is quality control or material defect. As an overall pit it’s a good design. It’s only used as a smoker, we had a pellet grill - sold it.
Ice Gypsy : Nice grill...
Showed up on time... dented, with a busted bolt and the grill doesn't fit inside. Not worth the money for all of the headaches I've seen so far.
Rusty Shackleford : Product is junk and customer service is a joke
Junk after first use air door would no longer stay in place, as well as almost all paint bubbled. Tried to contact them will not return calls emails etc. Not a good way to run a business, just very disappointed in company and there product.
Lawrence Gallegos : Happy
Definitely a good buy for the price point. I am very happy with the purchase of the Reverse flow. Does the paint peel? Yes. Do you need to do mods on it? Yes. But a person has to look at what they are paying and accept the negatives of it as expected. This is an entry level smoker for people not willing to pay thousands of dollars for the high quality smoker. If you want the smoker that is perfect expect to pay. Now with that said, this is an excellent smoker that holds it temp well, produces fantastic food and is an excellent entry level smoker to learn how to use a stick burner. I would highly suggest buying this smoker if you think you want to learn how to smoke. This was my plan as I have been upgrading from charcoal, propane (horrible), pellet, electric and now stick burner. I wanted to see if I would like the labor of a stick burner, and not regret my purchase of a couple thousand dollar smoker and have it sit there unused. Well, I do love it, it makes great food and I may just use this smoker until I can't use it anymore. If you are new to stick burning, this is the one to go with!! I have been very happy with it and not regretted one bit this purchase as it is the best teacher to learn how to use a stick burner.
Emily : great smoker

Henry B. : Terrific Smoker/Grill for the money!
I was a little hesitant after reading some of the reviews, but after exhaustive research (and my unwillingness to spend three or four times as much for other Smokers) I pulled the trigger on this one. I. LOVE. IT! Don't get me wrong, it isn't perfect but for the money it is great. It does leak smoke, but then again I am not sure I could control one that was totally air tight. I did the recommended mods with the squeeze gasket material on the fire box and then the tape around the openings. Still leaks, but does the job just fine. I love the cooking space and the fact that the fire box can be a quick little grill or use the main cooking area and grill out for a group! I have grilled a bunch of chicken in the main area, steaks for the wife and I in the fire box as well as smoked salmon (absolutely amazing!), ribs (I am still perfecting) and our Thanksgiving Turkey (Wow! Delicious!) The reverse flow really kept the temperature even throughout the cooking area. I added a second thermometer for easier control. Also, after my first bout with the salmon, I started cooking with a charcoal starter and then moved to straight wood chunks unless I needed a serious heat boost. The design of the smoker really kept the meats from getting TOO much smoke flavor! The only real issues I have is that my chimney for starting the charcoal doesn't fit in the fire box very well so it is awkward to start it and dump it in. Also, the door for cleaning out the ashes has HUGE gaps around it which you have to take into account when adjusting the vent for temperature. The last thing to say is that I followed the seasoning guidelines to a "T" and have not had any issue with paint peeling yet. Highly recommend for the amateur/pro-wannabe smoker/griller!
Juanita J. Cain : Five Stars
We are very pleased with this piece of equipment
Joseph Oakes : Fantastic smoker
I had an electric master built smoker and it finally died. I decided to GM with the reverse flow Oklahoma joe and it has not disappointed. I’ve smoked everything on it! I end up adding a log about every hour to keep the temperature between 225-275. The dampers work well to control the temp. So far I love this smoker. I will say the paint on the firebox does not hold up. I also used the sealant and the latches recommended for this smoker. Extremely happy!
Glenn Stolowski : Good starter off-set smoker
I read a lot of reviews and watched several videos on this smoker prior to purchasing. I added the fireblack gasket to the the firebox and main lid using high temp silicone. With the mods the smoker works perfectly and the reverse flow keeps even heat. I did not have any leaks for smoke. I was able to get three 14lb briskets to fit with no problem. The only issue was a slightly bent cooking grate during shipping, but it was on the edge of the grate and I was able to put it against the side where you don't notice. The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is that you have to do some modifications and pay for shipping. But for $650 it is a great smoker for the price. I would highly recommend to watch videos on how to assemble and make the mods before you put it together.
Amazon Customer : Season before using
You must take the time to season this equipment before using it to ensure that you assembled it properly, that everything is lined up correctly, and you can maintain a temperature. This was relatively easy to assemble although it is extremely heavy. I've not had to add anything to seal up the edges and have had great success with everything made on it so far.
steve : Ok starter smoker
Thin metal and you will need a lot of gasket material to seal. Paint on fire box did not make it through a 3 hour seasoning run.

tacoz1 : Very Satusfied
Reverse flow worked as advertised I used internal thermometers and the temps in the main cooking area were nicely balanced front to back. I modified the unit with Lava lock gaskets and and high temp rtv sealer to maintain temps for hours Much better then the trailmaster it replaced Very good build quality for the money. Very heavy definitely asssistance is needed to properly assemble
Chalmer Edgin II : Good product with mods
I ordered it on May 22 and it was delivered May 29 at 13:21. Real happy with shipping and delivery. The smoker seasoning was easy and the temperature control is well easier than I expected. I did make mods to it and recommend them. The sealing tape for the lids and the high temperature silicone applied to all the joining points that are bolted together.
JimmyK : Best investment in 2021
This thing is built like a tank.
Robert : Time to smoke
Once you add the mods it’s wonderful
Gordon Glass : Excellent grill
Smoked ribs on this smoker and couldn't believe how easy it was to maintain temperature across the whole grill.
JimmyK : Best investment in 2021
This thing is built like a tank.
Tim McLaughlin : Decent Smoker, Quality control is lacking
I really wanted to love this smoker. I had a hard time keeping the temperature up, there is a lot of smoke leaking around the lid. I ordered a smoke chamber gasket from ok joes directly that did not arrive on time.
Issues: The lid does not sit flat, I think a gasket will seal it. The chimney has a bit of a gap, will likely need some high temp silicone, I am less concerned about that. on one of the leg mounts, the weld missed 80% of the part. It appears the warranty does not cover shipping, this thing is over 200lbs, so I decided to not call OKJoes and make a claim. If I ever get a welder, I will fix it.
The firebox is designed to fit inside of the main unit for shipping a smaller box, two round halves bolted together. the corners of the firebox have a tack weld that sticks up on every corner, a lot of users seal the box with silicone, I ordered some 1000deg 1/8th inch firebox tape. this was the perfect thickness to seal the firebox due to the welds in each corner. I need to order more for the top door. the cleanout door has gap all the way around it preventing the fire from ever being shut down. if i get a welder i would like to put a flange around it, there is no easy fix to get a seal.
Good things: this is a heavy smoker, it should last a long time. I like the enameled grates. I like the reverse flow design. the fire box is large, once the unit is sealed more I think the fire will require less care.
I really wish the quality control was better at the factory and this $600 smoker did not require more money to make it really usable. The paint on the firebox started to burn off after the first use, it would be nice if it was enameled like some grills are. I plan on using this all the time.
Jeff Nelsen : It’s awesome!!!
I loved this Purchase it works very well! Worth every penny! I would definitely recommend this to a friend or someone serious in smoking. The temperature gauges are off at the very beginning but towards the middle to the end they all start sinking up I would recommend a thermal probe to get accurate temp.
Steven H. Stephenson : Great First Smoker
I bought the smaller Highland reverse flow smoker and I'm very pleased with it. As for the paint peeling off the firebox, just season it with some cooking oil every cook and you'll be fine. I watched a couple of videos online about it, especially T Roy cooks.
Scott G. : Use smoker all the time
I liked the 2chamber smoker. The temperature is easy to control with the air flow. I am having great luck smoking fish, pork and beef I am having a harder time.
Linda Parham : Make sure you do your home work.
Some of the bolts have broken, on the fire box. The damper handle broke off. The bolt for the door on fire box keeps falling off. It is a shame I had to purchase a fire box and smoker tape to help keep the smoke in. Now I have to buy locks for the smoker because the tape does not work that well. The paint is burning off the fire box. The front handle keeps coming out so I had to add some washers. I have been smoking meats on a tin box that held the heat better. You should not have to do all the modifications on this smoker. The one gauge that comes with it is in the wrong place since all the cooking is down on the grate and not in the top part. You will have to get a thermometer to read the temp. At the great or drill extra holes to put in a expensive gages.
