Answer: I actually don't know. I'm guessing about 18 inches at the farthest width. That's a guess though. I was able to scoop a nice sized Northern Pike into it when I was in the Boundary Waters if that helps.

The net seems pretty sturdy but you would t want to catch more than a medium fish with respect to the shaft strength. I like the way it folds. We actually got it to get items like cans or bottles out of the lake as we go by in our boat. It will work well for that as the handle is long enough for someone to reach over but we don’t have an awkward net and pole to find a place for when not in use.

Just got this in the mail. I'd return for a replacement, but they no longer carry this so I'm just going to keep it. THe net looks good, but the fish gripper's handle has a tear in it. (see picture)
